MATCHDAYHOTELS THE AWAY-DAY COMPANION

INSIDE MATCHDAYHOTELS

92 clubs.
Thousands of details.
One better away day.

The football is only part of the trip.

There’s the train, somewhere to park, a decent pub, a place to eat and, sometimes, a hotel for the night. Our football away-day guides bring accommodation, food and transport research together across English league football, so you can get on with being there.

WHAT SITS BEHIND OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

A postcode only tells
half the story.

A room beside the stadium can leave you miles from the evening. A town-centre pub can be the wrong stop for visiting fans. A free parking space is no bargain if its time limit runs out before the final whistle.

We weigh up the practical choices, then publish a shortlist with the compromises explained. The hotels and venues you see are selected recommendations, not a record of every business considered.

HUMANS, MACHINES & LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

How we research
an away day.

01

FIXTURE PROCESSOR

Every away day starts with the fixture.

A moved kick-off can change the train home, the hotel night and the whole shape of a trip. Fixtures and league information provide the framework; the club and ground supply the local context.

The football calendar
02

GROUND RESEARCH

The right base depends on the whole trip.

A recommendation earns its place against a wider field. We consider the station hotel, the independent in town, the motorway chain and the rooms beside the ground. Price, awkward connections, matchday restrictions or recurring review concerns can rule an option out. The published choices are a considered shortlist, with the compromises explained.

Research on the ground
03

SOURCE REVIEW

Not every recommendation survives a second look.

Club advice, councils, transport operators, venue websites and public supporter accounts can disagree. Manual checks and research tools help organise the evidence. Unclear admission rules, time limits and outdated advice need checking before they become recommendations.

The wider web
04

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

The useful detail is often a local one.

A car park that fills early. A pub with a fixture-specific door policy. A better station exit. Public supporter knowledge can uncover a useful lead; it does not turn that lead into a verified fact. We use publicly available information and treat local accounts as leads to check.

INSIDE THE RESEARCH NETWORK

Connected research.
One practical plan.

Follow the stages. Each one has a job to do before a useful detail reaches an away-day plan.

01DISCOVER

Find the useful lead

Fixtures, official guidance, venue information and public research provide the starting points.

02COMPARE

Look beyond the first answer

Compare locations, restrictions and practical choices. Keep conflicting accounts visible to the research process.

03CHECK

Ask what holds up

Consider the source, the date and the matchday context. A confident answer still needs evidence.

04PUBLISH

Put it where it helps

Reviewed information belongs beside the relevant ground, club or fixture, where a supporter can use it.

05REVISIT

Leave room to improve

New evidence and corrections can change a recommendation. Information is maintained rather than treated as finished forever.

Illustration of the research process. Stages can be revisited when information changes.

RECENTLY ACROSS THE NETWORK

The final whistle
doesn’t stop the research.

Pubs close. Kick-offs move. Parking rules change. A useful guide needs to be revisited, rather than published once and left alone.

The ledger records published research, league-table refreshes, results used for club form, match-market checks and fixture-data events. Decorative signals elsewhere illustrate the process; they are not a live activity log.

THE NETWORK GETS BETTER WITH LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

The next useful detail
could come from you.

Nobody knows every ground. The people who visit regularly, work nearby or run local businesses often know what a national guide misses.

FOR SUPPORTERS

Help improve an away-day guide.

A changed door policy, a closed venue or a practical correction can make a difference to the next person travelling.

How to send a correction →

Broader supporter submissions are a future ambition; contributions need review before publication.

FOR VENUE OWNERS

Make the useful details clear.

Opening times, away-fan policies, food, parking and accessible facilities matter more than a sales pitch. Contact us about a listing or a factual correction.

Contact MatchdayHotels →

Self-service listing claims are not offered here. Business information remains subject to editorial review.

WHERE TECHNOLOGY FITS

Technology does the legwork.
Judgement makes the difference.

Research tools, including artificial intelligence, help organise information and compare the evidence. But a confident answer is not necessarily a correct one.

A highly rated pub may not welcome visiting fans. A cheap parking space may have a three-hour limit. The closest hotel may be a poor place to spend the evening. Researching those possibilities matters, even when they never make the published shortlist.

Evidence over assumption. Check what supports the recommendation.

Context over proximity. The shortest distance is not always the best journey.

Research over repetition. Improve the information when the evidence changes.

People remain in the process. Tools support the work; publication and judgement remain editorial decisions.

WHAT RUNS TODAY

Existing scheduled football-data processes support fixtures and standings. Hotel, pub, food and transport research is organised through the research desk, with focused automated runs supporting the import and publication workflow. Research on venues and local travel is revisited through that workflow. Supporter accounts and public discussions add leads to assess alongside official guidance.

COMMERCIAL INDEPENDENCE & TRUST

A recommendation should earn its place.

Hotel links may earn MatchdayHotels a commission when you book. We explain that relationship alongside the practical reasons for our choices. Paid placements must be clearly identified; a commercial link is not an editorial reason to recommend a hotel. New evidence can change a recommendation, and accuracy is the aim rather than a guarantee.

Behind the numbers: what we count, and what we don’t

Club and division membership comes from the current football directory, with the dated guide catalogue used if the live query is unavailable. The hotel shortlist counts named properties with substantive published research. Hotel candidates include the shortlist plus named alternatives with a recorded assessment, deduplicated by normalised property name and destination; this is not a count of every property ever searched. Hospitality totals deduplicate named venues by recorded name and location. Empty hotel placeholders and hidden or closed venues are excluded. A hotel recommendation repeated in several categories is counted once.

Stations and parking locations are mapped records, not guaranteed services or spaces. Published travel sections are sections explicitly approved for publication. Source references count distinct referenced external HTTPS URLs; they are not a claim that every source is monitored continuously.

The indexed-record total adds clubs, distinct grounds, documented hotel candidates (including the shortlist), published venues, station and parking records, and league fixture records. Source URLs and travel text sections are shown separately and are not added to that total. These are different record types, not 4,033 independent fact checks. The catalogue groups the clubs into 73 destination areas and holds 235 mapped station and stop records.

Publication timestamps come from saved publication events. League-table refreshes, league results used for club form, match-market checks, fixture record updates and successful source checks are separate events. They use saved collection timestamps; market checks are not betting recommendations. A page view or website deployment does not refresh these dates. Aggregates are cached for up to five minutes. Times are displayed for Europe/London.

Counts describe available coverage, not completed research at every club. Private drafts, evidence text, staff details and internal administration records are not exposed here.

SAME ROADS. BIGGER STORIES.

The research is never the destination.
The away day is.

All the checking and comparing has one purpose: helping you make a better plan before setting off. First visit or fiftieth, there should be something worth knowing.
