What this club is really about

Ask where Port Vale is and the answer starts in Burslem. The club's unusual name preserves an older local place around Middleport, but Vale Park and the support around it belong firmly to the Mother Town. On the pitch, the memories stretch from the Iron Curtain side of 1954 to John Rudge's promotions, Wembley silverware and cup wins over bigger clubs. Off it, supporters have bought shares, challenged owners, raised money and turned up to clean the ground when the club needed help. Following Vale has often meant taking responsibility for the place as well as watching the team.

Living identity

Why that identity still matters

You can see that commitment around Vale Park. Supporters campaigned for Roy Sproson's statue, chose the figures in an anniversary mural and supplied the photographs that make it up. The move of home support to Hamil Road followed a memorable demonstration of its atmosphere in the 2022 play-offs. Under Carol and Kevin Shanahan, local private ownership has followed earlier experiments with supporter ownership. The expectation remains familiar: the people running Vale should understand Burslem and the fans who have kept the club going.

Rudge and the fire brigade

The mud is part of the memory of Vale's 1988 cup win over Tottenham. A club retrospective recalls Rudge joking that the fire brigade needed somewhere to test its hoses. The line belongs to the humour around the…
