Stevenage

A young club with old local football roots: built out of collapse, civic intervention and non-league stubbornness, then shaped by the 1996 promotion denial, Broadhall Way and a habit of turning outsider status into fuel.

Identity & place

What this club is really about

Boro began in 1976 after Stevenage Athletic disappeared, initially without access to the town's proper ground. The Conference title of 1996 brought no Football League place, another financial crisis threatened survival in 1999 and the breakthrough finally came in 2010. Broadhall Way and the memory of those setbacks give supporters attachments that go well beyond the honours list.

Why that identity still matters

The North Stand carries supporters' investment and the East Terrace their vocal backing. Six stripes on the crest connect the 1976 club to the Six Hills and New Town neighbourhoods. Newcastle in 1998 and 2011, Villa in 2023 and Wembley successes outside the League keep earlier against-the-odds memories alive.
