What this club is really about
Arsenal is a club of deliberate reinvention. The workers' club from the Royal Arsenal moved across London; Chapman made it a national power; Highbury acquired an Art Deco image and a particular sense of order; George Graham's teams made hard-edged efficiency a badge of honour; Wenger changed the football, the diet, the recruitment map and the idea of what Arsenal could look like; the move to Emirates Stadium forced a new generation to work out how much of Highbury could be carried with it. The cannon, red-and-white, the Clock, 'The Arsenal' as a slightly formal self-description and a deep attachment to north London provide the continuity.
