What this club is really about
Brentford's identity is not simply the recent story of smart recruitment and a new stadium. It begins beside the Thames with a rowing club choosing football over rugby, runs through 116 years at the wonderfully hemmed-in Griffin Park, and repeatedly returns to supporters refusing to let the club be swallowed, displaced or allowed to drift. The result is an unusual combination: old lower-league intimacy and pub-corner folklore carried into a sharply designed Premier League ground whose railway-triangle shape records the compromise required to stay local.
