B&B HOTEL Ipswich
Ranelagh Road / station side of central Ipswich
The strongest default recommendation for a normal Ipswich Town overnight: close enough to Portman Road to make matchday simple, very close to the station, consistently strong recent cleanliness/staff/value scores and normally much cheaper than the Waterfront premium option. It was formerly Pentahotel, which explains the old Booking.com URL, but the property is currently operating and bookable as B&B HOTEL Ipswich.
- The hotel and Booking.com both put Ipswich station at roughly a five-minute walk, useful for late arrivals and a quick getaway the next morning.
- Current Booking.com score is around 8.6 with particularly strong cleanliness, staff and value subscores.
Booking.com lists the hotel 1,550 ft from Portman Road; this is one of the easiest non-stadium-door walks in the town.
It is on the station/ground side rather than in the Waterfront nightlife cluster, so the best post-match bars and waterside restaurants require a longer walk across the centre.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.

Travelodge Ipswich Central
Russell Road / Portman Road
This is the closest practical choice because it is effectively beside Portman Road. It is a modern, straightforward chain hotel with a Bar Café, air conditioning and paid parking, and recent reviews are generally positive on location, cleanliness and staff.
- Travelodge's own page describes the hotel as right next to Portman Road and only a few minutes' walk from the stadium.
- The local All About Ipswich listing independently confirms the Russell Road location and the very short stadium walk.
Travelodge says the hotel is right next to Portman Road; both Travelodge and All About Ipswich describe the walk as only a few minutes. Exact route distance varies by stadium entrance, so no false-precision mileage is stored.
This is a match-convenience base, not Ipswich's best nightlife address; the Waterfront is farther away.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.

Salthouse Harbour Hotel and Spa
Ipswich Waterfront / Neptune Quay
The best choice when the overnight is meant to feel like a proper night in Ipswich rather than merely a bed beside the ground. Salthouse is on Neptune Quay in the Waterfront hospitality area, with its own strong bar/brasserie and spa, and its current reputation is the strongest of the primary picks.
- It sits directly in the Waterfront bar/restaurant cluster rather than requiring a post-match move to reach the evening area.
- Ipswich Borough Council describes the Waterfront as a thriving hospitality area with bars, restaurants and all-hours taxi provision.
Booking.com's Portman Road landmark page places Salthouse 0.7 miles from the stadium. It is a straightforward central-town walk but noticeably farther after the match than B&B HOTEL or Travelodge.
It is materially more expensive than B&B HOTEL, Travelodge, Novotel or easyHotel.

Travel & parking
Driving, parking and rail planning for Brentford supporters travelling to Ipswich Town.
Choose a topic for the full journey advice.
Parking
Driving & road restrictions
Use the postcode for the car park you intend to use rather than simply entering Portman Road, IP1 2DA. From the A12/A14 Copdock interchange, follow the A1214 London Road towards Ipswich. West End Road leads towards the coach park and stadium-side car parks, while the larger council Portman Road car parks are reached via the signed town-centre road network.
Matchday access is not the same as a normal weekday. The road behind the Cobbold Stand is blocked at both ends, and the club says the route behind the Sir Bobby Robson Stand closes around 90 minutes before kick-off. To reach the Portman Road car parks, the visiting guide directs drivers along Handford Road and onto Portman Road.
Allow extra time for A12 and A14 roadworks, the final approach and pedestrian crowds after the game. A central car park or Park & Ride means fewer stadium-side junctions to negotiate on the way home.
- Stadium postcode
- IP1 2DA; use the selected car park postcode when driving.
- Approach from A12/A14
- Copdock interchange to A1214 London Road, then signed route via West End Road or Handford Road.
- Cobbold Stand road
- Road immediately behind the Cobbold Stand permanently blocked at both ends, according to the October 2026 club guide.
- Pre-kick-off road closure
- Road behind the Sir Bobby Robson Stand reported closed about 90 minutes before kick-off.
- Portman Road car park approach
- Club advises approaching from London Road via Handford Road and turning right onto Portman Road, following signage.
- Post-match car park controls
- Portman Road-side entrance/exit closes 15 minutes before until 15 minutes after full-time; Friars Bridge Road access stays open.
- Trunk-road delays
- October 2026 visiting-supporter guidance reports long-term A12 works and possible overnight closures; check current highway updates.
Parking & park-and-ride
Use a paid car park or the Park & Ride rather than gamble on free streets around Portman Road. The nearest public car parks charge £15 on Ipswich Town home matchdays, while nearby streets include permit-controlled bays and waiting restrictions. No named stretch of unrestricted road could be verified for a complete matchday stay, so do not build your journey around one.
If you want the shortest walk, Portman Road C (IP1 2BP) is directly beside the away end. It is a large council car park, but matchday parking is first come, first served and does not reserve a bay. Its Portman Road access is suspended around full-time and stadium-area roads can take a long time to clear. West End Road (IP1 2DZ) is another £15 option, around five minutes away.
For better value, use Crown Street (Claude Street, IP1 3HS). The council lists £8.50 for up to five hours, plus a £2.80 after-2pm special offer, with 24-hour access. It is a longer walk, roughly 10–15 minutes, but avoids the immediate stadium car-park restrictions. Check the correct tariff when you park.
London Road Park & Ride (IP8 3TQ) offers genuinely free parking if you travel on the 800 bus, which currently costs £4 for an adult day ticket. The St Clare House stop is close to the stadium. This works for ordinary Saturday afternoons, but not Sundays or late matches because the 800 finishes in the early evening.
Allow at least four hours for arriving, walking, the match and getting back to your car, and more if you are stopping for food. Do not leave your vehicle at Sainsbury's or another shop while attending football without explicit operator permission. Customer parking and a typical two-hour allowance are not a football parking arrangement.
- Parking verdict
- Booking is not compulsory for pay-on-arrival council car parks, but use authorised paid parking or Park & Ride; do not rely on free residential streets.
- Legal restrictions — Portman Road and Sir Alf Ramsey Way
- Both are named in Residents Parking Zone 4; individual permit bays, waiting bays and yellow lines depend on the signs.
- Legal restrictions — Alderman Road, Handford Road, London Road, Burlington Road
- Streets listed in Residents Parking Zone 4; not a blanket statement that every metre is permit-only.
- Legal restrictions — Ranelagh Road development
- Some privately managed spaces require a numbered visitor permit and valid ticket; not public free football parking.
- Matchday availability — near stadium
- Club October 2026 visitor guide describes sizeable council car parks but advises allowing 30–45 minutes to clear; real-time space availability is not guaranteed.
- Paid fallback — Portman Road C
- IP1 2BP, 618 standard/general spaces listed by council, matchday £15 vehicle tariff; no allocated bay.
- Walk — Portman Road C
- Adjacent to Cobbold Stand away entrance; exact bay-to-turnstile walk depends on which entrance is open.
- Paid fallback — West End Road
- IP1 2DZ; £15 matchday rate, 385 spaces listed by council, about five minutes walk.
- Paid fallback — Princes Street
- IP1 1RY; 21 council spaces listed, £15 matchday tariff.
- Paid fallback — Portman Road A
- IP1 2DW; 55 spaces, £15 home-match parking tariff, opening can change during fixtures.
- Paid fallback — Crown Street
- IP1 3HS, access 24/7; normal tariff up to five hours £8.50; published after-2pm 2h+ offer £2.80.
- Walk — Crown Street
- Club October 2026 guide says just over ten minutes from stadium; allow roughly 10–15 minutes to the away entrance.
- Free option — Park and Ride
- London Road IP8 3TQ or Martlesham IP5 3QN: free parking only when using operator route 800; no overnight parking.
- Park and Ride cost
- Adult day ticket £4, family High5 group ticket £8 (up to two adults and three children), checked 15 October 2026.
- Booking recommendation
- Council pay-and-stay car parks do not allocate booked individual bays; pre-book a private space only where the operator explicitly authorises stadium parking and matches your timing.
- Arrive by — car parks
- Arrive with time to walk to the away turnstiles and clear security; club recommends good time up to 90 minutes before kick-off.
- Supermarket permission/time limit
- Sainsbury’s says most store car parks permit customers up to two hours; local signs govern. No permission established to leave a car for football.
- Supermarket alternative — Morrisons
- Ipswich Morrisons advertises free parking for its customers but publishes no football-use permission on the checked store page.
- Total dwell time
- Allow four hours or more for arrival, walking, match, half-time, stoppages and exit delay; 2–3h customer limits are insufficient.
- After the match
- Portman Road C vehicle access on Portman Road stops for 30 minutes around full-time and wider congestion can extend departure; consider Crown Street or rail.
- Evening and Sunday differences
- Park & Ride route 800 does not run Sundays and ends in early evening; Crown Street has 24-hour access while stadium-side car park operations may change.

Matchday advice: Use a paid car park or the Park & Ride rather than gamble on free streets around Portman Road. The nearest public car parks charge £15 on Ipswich Town home matchdays, while nearby streets include permit-controlled bays and waiting restrictions.
Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Use Ipswich railway station for Portman Road. The ground is around five to ten minutes on foot, and most long-distance arrivals can walk rather than look for a connecting bus. Trains from London Liverpool Street or Stratford reach Ipswich on the main line, with other connections from Norwich and via Peterborough.
From the station forecourt, follow Princes Street over the bridge and turn left into Portman Road for the away end. Check your return service before leaving home, particularly if you are travelling via Peterborough or attending an evening fixture. Replacement buses or weekend engineering work can change the journey considerably.
Derby Road is a separate station on the Felixstowe branch, much farther from the stadium. It is not a sensible substitute for Ipswich station unless your actual rail itinerary specifically requires it.
- Recommended railway station
- Ipswich (Greater Anglia), IP2 8AL
- Walk from Ipswich station
- Approximately 5–10 minutes to Portman Road; allow longer for searches and the precise away entrance.
- Rail routes
- London Liverpool Street/Stratford, Norwich and regional links including Peterborough; check train times for the individual fixture.
- Ipswich station step-free access
- Category A: lifts provide step-free access to all platforms; check for real-time lift outages.
- Alternative station — Derby Road
- Felixstowe branch-line station, farther from Portman Road; not the recommended football arrival.
- Evening-train caution
- Last onward trains, especially via Peterborough, may be unsuitable after midweek matches; inspect current timetable.
- Rail engineering
- Greater Anglia engineering and rail-replacement arrangements vary by fixture.
Station to ground & away entrance
Head for the Cobbold Stand away turnstiles on Portman Road, not the main club reception. From Ipswich station, cross the Princes Street bridge, follow the street towards the floodlights and turn left onto Portman Road. The walk is short, but crowds and matchday screening can slow the final approach.
The club's October 2026 visiting guide uses upper blocks VU1–VU3 and lower blocks VL and VA, with the accessible entrance immediately beside the away ticket collection point. Visiting block allocations can change between matches, so follow your ticket and the stewards. Arrive in time for security checks; the club normally opens away turnstiles around 90 minutes before kick-off.
- Away stand
- Cobbold Stand, away-facing frontage on Portman Road.
- Visiting blocks (October 2026 example)
- VU1, VU2 and VU3 upper tier, VL and VA lower tier; actual allocation can change.
- Visiting turnstile
- Turnstile 10 is identified by the club for visitors in its March 2026 matchday guide; use the entrance printed on the fixture ticket.
- Station-to-away route
- Princes Street bridge, then turn left onto Portman Road for the Cobbold Stand.
- Accessible entrance
- Immediately to the left of the away turnstiles, marked by a purple accessible-entrance sign.
- Away ticket collection
- Windows beside the away turnstiles and accessible entrance.
- Typical turnstile opening
- Approximately 90 minutes before kick-off, subject to the fixture.
- Security and bags
- Ticket checks and searches; bags larger than A4 not permitted, with no stadium bag storage.

Coaches
Away coaches
Away coaches normally park at West End Road car park, IP1 2DZ, around five minutes on foot from Portman Road. From the parking area, walk towards the stadium and follow the signs or steward instructions for the Cobbold Stand. The Station Hotel opposite the railway station is also within easy reach if your group has time before kick-off.
Arrange your return with the coach organiser rather than assuming a vehicle will wait outside the away turnstiles. West End Road has dedicated coach bays, but police instructions and the allocated collection point can change for particular fixtures. Supporters who need a closer drop-off should ask their away club to arrange this with Ipswich Town before travelling.
- Usual away coach parking
- West End Road public car park, IP1 2DZ.
- Coach walk to away end
- Around 5 minutes, subject to actual bay and steward route.
- Coach parking capacity
- West End Road car park has eight designated PCV bays.
- Public coach tariff
- Council lists £15 for coaches up to 24 hours at West End Road; organised visiting-coach charges or allocations may differ.
- Coach collection
- Normally West End Road; confirm organiser and police directions for the fixture.
- Accessible coach drop-off
- Closer drop-off can be arranged in advance through club accessibility staff.

Buses
Buses & local travel
The easiest local connection for a driver is First Bus route 800 from London Road Park & Ride or Martlesham Park & Ride. Alight at St Clare House near the stadium, then walk to the Portman Road away turnstiles. Parking at both sites is free when you actually use the Park & Ride bus, and a normal adult day ticket currently costs £4.
The 800 runs Monday to Saturday, not Sundays, and its published return journeys finish during the early evening. This makes it useful for a normal Saturday afternoon match but a poor plan for many evening kick-offs. Ipswich's other local buses serve the station and town centre, but walking directly from Ipswich railway station is normally simpler than changing vehicles.
- Park and Ride service
- First Bus route 800, Monday–Saturday only; not operating Sunday.
- London Road Park and Ride
- IP8 3TQ, around 15-minute bus ride into central Ipswich.
- Martlesham Park and Ride
- IP5 3QN, around 25–35-minute bus ride into central Ipswich.
- Nearest Park and Ride stop
- St Clare House, a short walk from Portman Road; direction of service determines precise stop.
- Park and Ride adult day fare
- £4 on First Bus operator page checked 15 October 2026.
- Park and Ride group fare
- High5 day ticket £8, maximum two adults and three children, travelling together.
- Saturday return limitation
- First Bus lists final route 800 departures from central Ipswich around 19:09 on Saturdays; verify direction and live timetable.
- Sunday and late kick-offs
- No route 800 Sunday service; late-evening return is unsuitable without separately verified onward transport.
- Park and Ride parking requirement
- Free on-site parking is intended for bus users; no overnight parking permitted.
Accessibility
Accessible journeys
Arrange accessible parking through your own visiting club before matchday if you need to bring a car. Ipswich Town's October 2026 visiting guide identifies three free bays at Suffolk County Council, IP1 2DH, around a seven-minute walk from the away entrance. Spaces are limited and are not allocated merely because you hold a Blue Badge.
The away accessible entrance is beside the Cobbold Stand turnstiles and clearly signed. Wheelchair users are accommodated in the lower visiting section, with accessible toilets and a lowered catering counter. There is no lift to the upper visiting tier, so confirm your block and any mobility needs when booking.
Ipswich railway station is normally step-free to all platforms by lift, but lift availability should be checked on the day. For audio-descriptive commentary, assistance dogs or sensory support, contact Ipswich Town's disability liaison officer before travelling.
- Free visiting disabled parking
- Three spaces at Suffolk County Council, IP1 2DH; booking through the visiting club, first come first served.
- Disabled parking walk
- Club visiting guide describes a seven-minute walk to the away turnstiles.
- Blue Badge in public council car parks
- Normal public tariffs, including football matchday tariff where applicable; badge alone does not waive fee.
- Visiting accessible entrance
- Purple-marked entrance to the left of the away turnstiles.
- Away wheelchair seating
- Cobbold Stand lower visiting area, including block VA; accessible toilets available.
- Upper-tier access
- No lift access to visiting upper tier.
- Audio descriptive commentary
- Soccer Sight headsets available by prior arrangement with Ipswich Town.
- Accessibility contact
- Lee Smith, lee.smith@itfc.co.uk, 01473 400556, as in October 2026 guide.
- Ipswich station access
- Greater Anglia lists step-free access to all platforms via lifts; check outages.
- Assistance dogs and sensory packs
- Contact the club in advance for assistance dogs or sensory-pack provision.
After the match
After the match
If you are catching a train, walk back to Ipswich station along Portman Road and Princes Street. It is a short journey on foot, but allow extra time to leave the Cobbold Stand and cross busy roads. Check the last connection, especially for trips via Peterborough or when the game might run into extra time.
Drivers leaving the closest Portman Road car park can be held while pedestrians disperse. The council temporarily closes its Portman Road entrance and exit around full-time, and the club warns that wider stadium traffic can take up to an hour to clear. The Friars Bridge Road side remains available, but is not a promise of a quick exit.
Crown Street or another authorised town-centre car park is worth the longer walk if you want less dependence on stadium-side traffic controls. For Park & Ride, make sure you can reach the final 800 service rather than assuming an evening return is available.
- Rail return
- Return to Ipswich station via Princes Street bridge; check last onward train and engineering works.
- Vehicle hold — Portman Road car park
- Council states no Portman Road entrance or exit for 30 minutes around final whistle (15 minutes before to 15 minutes after).
- Alternative car park exit
- Friars Bridge Road vehicle access remains open at all times according to council; congestion can still occur.
- Reported broader delays
- Club October 2026 visiting guide advises 30–45 minutes to clear Portman Road car park, and possible longer on roads near stadium.
- Lower congestion option
- Crown Street is a longer walk and not immediately within stadium-managed access; departure advantage not guaranteed.
- Coach departure
- Return to organiser-advised parking on West End Road unless police or organiser change it.
- Park and Ride last buses
- Final route 800 central Ipswich departures approximately 19:09 Saturday, and no Sunday service; check current timetable.
Where to stay
Stay near Ipswich railway station or the west side of the town centre if football logistics come first. The station, Portman Road and central restaurants are all within walking distance, so you can get to the match without a taxi and make an early train home if necessary. The Ranelagh Road and Princes Street side is particularly convenient for the ground.
For a longer evening, Ipswich Waterfront offers more of a restaurant-and-marina setting, although it is farther from the stadium and station. The central shopping streets are another useful compromise if you want pubs, food and a straightforward walk back after full-time.
Do not choose an out-of-town hotel purely because it offers parking unless you have checked the full travel arrangement. With a late kick-off, staying near the station can be more useful than relying on a Park & Ride bus that finishes before you can get back to it.
- Recommended hotel area
- Ipswich railway station / Ranelagh Road / Princes Street side of town centre.
- Station-to-ground walking
- Around 5–10 minutes.
- Town-centre distance
- Club guide describes town centre as around 5–10 minutes on foot from stadium.
- Waterfront distance
- Club guide describes Waterfront as around 15 minutes walk from Portman Road.
- Nightlife alternative
- Ipswich Waterfront and town-centre restaurants are suitable bases, with longer journey to/from away end.
- Example hotel areas
- B&B HOTEL near station and other town-centre hotels listed in club October 2026 guide; live room rates unverified.
- Evening travel consideration
- Park & Ride route 800 finishes early evening and runs Monday–Saturday only.

Ipswich is one of those away days where the railway station gives you the clearest plan. The Station Hotel directly opposite is the club-designated away pub and the sensible meeting point for train arrivals; Portman Road is only about 5–10 minutes on foot. Do not assume the rest of the town centre works the same way: Ipswich Town’s visiting guide says most pubs near the ground are home-only, few will take large away groups and police can tighten the list fixture by fixture. Away colours are therefore safest at the Station Hotel rather than on a pub crawl. Food is easier: the town centre sits close to the stadium, with independent options such as Honey + Harvey, Mizu and Ocean Fish Platter, though none publishes a football-specific away-colours policy. Once inside the Cobbold Stand there are pies, sausage rolls, snacks and vegetarian options. External food is currently barred from Portman Road, and away-end alcohol is decided match by match. Treat the FanZone as unavailable to visitors unless that fixture’s guide explicitly says otherwise.

Food & quick bites
Where to grab a bite, have a proper meal or try the local matchday favourite.
Cobbold Stand away concourse
The reliable fallback once through the visiting turnstiles: pies, sausage rolls, crisps, chocolate and vegetarian options are advertised on the away concourse. The concourse bars are cashless.
Mizu Noodle Bar
Fast, canteen-style Pan-Asian food on Cornhill, with noodle and rice dishes cooked to order and takeaway available. A stronger pre-match option if you want something quicker than a pub lunch.
Ocean Fish Platter
A proper sit-down fish option in the town centre rather than generic fast food. The menu runs from fish and chips to grilled fish and shellfish, with vegetarian and children’s choices.
Honey + Harvey Ipswich
A useful town-centre breakfast or early-lunch stop: full English, veggie breakfast, baps, bagels and sandwiches, with service running into the afternoon. It gives away fans a proper sit-down option without relying on stadium food.
