Wigan Athletic

A club built on persistence: formed after repeated football failures in a rugby league town, kept knocking on the Football League door, then rose at extraordinary speed before discovering just how fragile success and ownership can be.

What this club is really about

Different generations inherit different Wigan struggles. Older fans remember Springfield Park, non-League opponents, 34 unsuccessful League applications and election in 1978. Whelan, the Three Amigos, promotions and the new stadium followed. Others grew up with Premier League escapes and the week in May 2013 when an FA Cup win over Manchester City preceded relegation by three days. Fans raised emergency funds during administration in 2020 and faced another financial crisis in 2023. Persistence connects those experiences.

Why that identity still matters

The FA Cup is Wigan's best-known achievement, but League election, top-flight survival and recovery from ownership crises also hold the story together locally. Football has maintained its place beside an established rugby league institution. The Tree and Crown badge, Springfield memories, supporter fundraising, printed fanzine and schoolchildren's pie mascot all carry particular parts of that continuing identity.

Pie-eaters

The usual Pie Eaters explanation involves the 1926 General Strike: miners said to have returned earlier than neighbours were accused of eating 'humble pie'. The account is widely repeated but its etymology remains unproven.
