What this club is really about

Coventry City's identity is unusually easy to trace. It begins with Singer cycle workers in industrial Hillfields, is consciously reinvented in the 1960s through Jimmy Hill's 'Sky Blue Revolution', reaches its most cherished single day at Wembley in 1987, and is then tested by relegation, ownership conflict and two periods of playing home matches outside the city. That is why 'home' carries unusual weight here: the old Highfield Road is gone, but memories of it remain active, while the CBS Arena has slowly accumulated statues, songs, a vocal corner and — since 2025 — the security of common club-and-stadium ownership.

Why that identity still matters

The 2025 purchase of the Arena and the 2026 return to the Premier League brought together two long-running Coventry stories: recovering control of where the club plays and recovering the league status lost in 2001. Supporters who lived through Sixfields, St Andrew's, League Two and repeated stadium uncertainty therefore see the current era against a much longer background than a simple promotion story.
