Identity & place

What this club is really about

Barnsley's identity is less about claiming giant status than about belonging to the town and remembering the occasions when a club of its scale has done something improbable: the 1912 FA Cup, finally reaching the top flight in 1997, the 2008 FA Cup run, and the two Wembley successes of 2016. Oakwell matters because it has been home since 1888 and still contains visible layers of old and new Barnsley rather than presenting as a uniform modern bowl.
