What this club is really about
Leyton Orient make most sense as a small, old London club that has repeatedly had to insist on its own place. The club began in the Clapton/Homerton world, moved east to Leyton, has lived at Brisbane Road since 1937 and has spent generations in the shadow of much larger London neighbours without becoming a junior version of any of them. Its supporters have had to defend both the club and the idea of the club: through ownership crises, the 2017 near-collapse, stadium campaigns and a strong independent supporter culture. The First World War story of Clapton Orient, once comparatively neglected, has also become a serious modern strand of supporter memory rather than a marketing prop.
