What this club is really about
The useful thread is continuity through violent changes in scale. The club came out of West Gorton and Ardwick, spent 80 years building a match-going mythology at Maine Road, survived a 1990s collapse that produced some of its most cherished humour and loyalty tests, then changed beyond recognition after 2008. Older City identity is full of self-mockery, bananas, fanzines, the Kippax, improbable relegations and songs about not really being there. Modern City adds global support, elite football and a transformed Etihad Campus. The identity lives in the friction between those two realities rather than in pretending either one does not exist.
