What this club is really about
Charlton makes most sense through the idea of custodianship. The club began with local teenagers, its supporters helped turn a former sand/chalk pit into The Valley, and later generations organised politically, financially and practically to get the club back there after exile. That history carried into fanzines, ownership protests, the Supporters' Trust, stadium-protection work and Valley Gold. The resulting culture is not permanently angry or anti-owner; it is unusually alert to who controls the ground, how the club is run, whether supporter traditions are protected and whether the academy still gives local and developed players a route into the first team.
