BEFORE YOU SET OFF

Put your trip together

01 · Arrive

Your route into The Valley

Head for the Jimmy Seed Stand, the usual visiting-supporter end of The Valley. From Charlton station, cross Charlton Church Lane and follow Floyd Road towards the ground, then use the signs and stewards to reach the Valley Grove side of the away stand. Do not assume the home ticket-office entrance is the correct approach for your ticket. The club opens turnstiles around 90 minutes before kick-off. Allow extra time to get through if you arrive close to the pre-match road closures, which affect Valley Grove, Floyd Road and Harvey Gardens. Away accessible drop-off is normally arranged at Entrance 4 on Valley Grove, subject to matchday stewarding.

02 · Before the match

The Valley Cafe

5-minute walk to the ground. Full English-style breakfasts, bacon rolls, sausage baguettes, sandwiches and jacket potatoes; useful for a substantial pre-match feed without a pub. Current listings agree on an early Saturday opening but conflict on Sunday trading. For Sunday fixtures, verify before travelling.

03 · Stay or head home?

Choose your base before your hotel

Stay in Greenwich if you want a proper away weekend with a choice of pubs, restaurants and hotels. Greenwich railway station gives you an easy onward journey to Charlton, leaving the immediate stadium neighbourhood for the match rather than for your whole evening.

traditional London pie and mash

Goddards at Greenwich

If you want a proper London food experience rather than anonymous stadium fare, go for pie and mash here. It is particularly useful for supporters based in Greenwich overnight or meeting friends before travelling on.

Expect independent · traditional · sit down

independent street food

Greenwich Market

Good for mixed groups · daytime food

The best Greenwich option when a group cannot agree what to eat. Independent street-food stalls give far more choice than committing everyone to one pub kitchen.

Expect street food · Greenwich · group friendly

Before you go The main market is daytime-focused. The separate Cutty Sark Street Food Market runs Friday-Sunday only during its published 2026 season.

Food & drink
The current market promotes global street food including Korean corn dogs, ramen burgers, Ethiopian/Eritrean food, plus a separate Cutty Sark weekend market with paella, souvlaki and pizza.

stadium kiosks: pies, hot dogs and snacks

Jimmy Seed Stand Concourse

Good for inside ground · late arrival

The simplest fallback for supporters heading straight to their seats. You can buy hot food in the away concourse without leaving the ground, but it is not a substitute for a more varied meal in Charlton or Greenwich.

Expect stadium · quick food

Before you go The club’s 2025/26 away guide says contactless only and warns that stock varies; arrive ahead of half-time queues.

Food & drink
Pies, Rollover hot dogs, chilli-and-cheese hot dogs, crisps, sweets, tea, coffee and soft drinks; selection is subject to stock.

The Valley Cafe

Good for breakfast · early kick off

A sensible first stop for supporters arriving by train who would rather have breakfast than a pie inside the ground. It is close enough to Charlton station to keep the final walk straightforward.

Expect local cafe · casual · quick meal

Before you go Independent listings put Saturday opening around 7am and closing around 3pm; Sunday hours conflict. Allow extra time if the café is busy.

Choose this for a substantial hot takeaway without heading up to Charlton Village or back into Greenwich. The broad kebab-and-chips menu also works for a mixed group, provided everyone allows preparation time.

Expect quick food · counter service

Before you go Takeaway sites disagree on daily opening time, ranging from 11am to noon; do not promise a hot lunch before an early kick-off.

Food & drink

Expect tea room · independent · historic setting

Food & drink
Breakfast, brunch, light lunches, tea and coffee; formal vintage afternoon tea can be booked separately.

mixed independent street food

Greenwich Market food stalls

Expect market · casual · multiple traders

Before you go The market publishes 10am–5.30pm every day, but individual food traders can differ. A Visit Greenwich food-court listing has narrower days and hours.

Food & drink
Variable daily stalls spanning Ethiopian, Turkish, Thai, burgers, pasta, vegan dishes and sweet treats.
How it works
multiple takeaway traders; stall-by-stall service

Greenwich Market, Greenwich, London SE10 9HZ

Ethiopian and Eritrean street food

Addis Taste at Greenwich Market

A useful named stall for supporters who want something distinctive from Greenwich Market. It is worth seeking out for Ethiopian and Eritrean flavours, although its published trading days do not cover every day of the week.

Expect market · Ethiopian · takeaway

Before you go The market lists Addis Taste on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; Thursday and Sunday are not shown in its trader timetable.

Food & drink
Ethiopian/Eritrean dishes with vegetarian, vegan, meat, halal and gluten-free options as listed by the market.

seasonal world street food

Cutty Sark Street Food Market

Good for weekend only · street food

A good outdoor choice for supporters making a full day of Greenwich, especially a family or group wanting to pick separate dishes. Do not confuse the seasonal Cutty Sark stalls with the permanent main market.

Expect outdoor · market · casual

Before you go Its 2026 season runs Fridays to Sundays until 29 November, normally opening at 10am; no Monday–Thursday operation is published.

Food & drink

How it works

Nigerian suya and rice dishes

Alhaji Suya Greenwich

Good for Nigerian food · takeaway

For something different before or after football, seek out the Nigerian suya and rice dishes rather than standard fast food. There is an important address discrepancy between the business’s own pages, so verify the serving counter first.

Expect African · counter service · spicy food

Before you go The Greenwich branch page says daily noon–10pm; third-party delivery hours differ. Another first-party contact page lists Horn Lane instead of Woolwich Road.

Food & drink
Smoky beef tozo suya, suya jollof rice, shawarma, grilled chicken, suya wings and spiced sides.
How it works
counter takeaway and online-order pickup

WHERE TO STAY

Where should you stay?

Choose a base for the football and the rest of your visit.

Where to stay

Stay in Greenwich if you want a proper away weekend with a choice of pubs, restaurants and hotels. Greenwich railway station gives you an easy onward journey to Charlton, leaving the immediate stadium neighbourhood for the match rather than for your whole evening. Allow time to get back through any post-match crowds. For the shortest football journey, Charlton or the nearby Woolwich Road side can work if you find suitable accommodation. The trade-off is a much smaller choice of hotels and places to go afterwards. If you are arriving through London Bridge, a central-London base can also suit, provided your return train times work.

Greenwich station facilities and access ↗

For the best balance, stay around Greenwich station, Greenwich High Road or central Maritime Greenwich. Choose the Angerstein instead when being able to walk to The Valley matters more than having a broad evening choice on the doorstep.

For the evening

Central/Maritime Greenwich around Greenwich Market, Greenwich High Road, College Approach and the riverside is the strongest nearby cluster for pubs, restaurants and an evening after the game.

For the train

Greenwich station is the most useful overnight rail base. Direct trains can make Greenwich to Charlton in roughly seven minutes, and Charlton station is only a few minutes' walk from The Valley.

    More about this choice

Better post-match pub and food choice than staying in the immediate Valley area.

Large, established hotel with a substantial recent review base rather than a thinly reviewed matchday option.

Booking.com coverage is verified and sampled rates were competitive for a four-star Greenwich hotel.

Recent reviews include recurring comments about tired rooms, maintenance or cleaning detail, so check the newest room-specific feedback before paying a premium.

Some sampled midweek nights were dearer than weekends, so there is no dependable 'cheap weekday' rule.
