Exeter City

A supporter-owned city club whose identity is built from St Sidwell's street roots, the Big Bank, Brazil 1914, an academy that keeps the model viable and the memory of having had to save itself.

Identity & place

What this club is really about

Exeter City makes most sense when ownership, place and scale are read together. The club grew out of St Sidwell's rather than being imposed on the city from above; St James Park still sits tightly inside that neighbourhood; and since 2003 supporters have held the majority stake after inheriting a club close to collapse. That history has made prudence, volunteering and youth development part of the football culture rather than side projects. The Brazil story gives the club a wonderfully improbable piece of world-football history, while the Big Bank gives it a recognisable matchday voice.

Living identity

Why that identity still matters

The rescue is recent enough to be living memory, so 'We Own Our Football Club' carries a practical meaning. Exeter cannot solve every problem with owner money; academy graduates, sensible budgets and supporter labour matter. At the same time the club has resisted becoming solely a survival story: Stanno's song, the Brazil chant, the museum trail and a packed terrace preserve emotion, humour and continuity.
