The final whistle doesn’t have to be the end of it.
A room beside the ground can be handy at five o’clock and less useful at nine. We look at the journey, the neighbourhood and the evening, as well as the bed.
For the cleanest football-trip compromise, base yourself on the eastern side of the city centre around Western Way, Sidwell Street or Princesshay: the ground is walkable and the High Street/Cathedral quarter is still close enough for food and drinks. Move deeper towards Cathedral Yard/Gandy Street if the evening after the match matters more than shaving a few minutes off the stadium walk.
Western Way / Sidwell Street / eastern city centre
This is the most football-practical hotel in the current Exeter set without making you sacrifice the city. It sits on the city-centre side of St James Park, so the post-match walk is short, while Princesshay, the High Street and the older centre remain reachable on foot. It is a conventional 4-star chain rather than a character stay, but that predictability is useful on a match trip.
Tripadvisor's proximity search lists it around 0.3 miles from Exeter City Football Club.
Western Way puts it between the ground and the main city-centre food/drink area rather than forcing a choice between the two.
The match journey
Tripadvisor lists the hotel 0.3 miles from Exeter City Football Club. Walking time varies by route and stadium entrance; allow roughly 8-10 minutes rather than treating the straight-line figure as a gate-to-door promise.
The trade-off
The hotel is functional and modern rather than distinctive or boutique.

For the pubs & eveningMake a night of it
Hotel Indigo Exeter by IHG
Cathedral / High Street / city-centre nightlife core
Choose Hotel Indigo when the evening matters as much as the football. Catherine Street puts you directly in the old-centre food/drink zone, close to Cathedral Yard and Gandy Street, and the hotel adds its own rooftop bar. The ground remains walkable, but the trade-off is a longer post-match walk and a more uneven recent service/noise record than Leonardo.
Directly in the Cathedral/High Street core, with Gandy Street's bars and restaurants nearby.
Its own Becketts rooftop bar gives supporters an immediate post-match drink option without leaving the property.
The match journey
Third-party hotel mapping places St James Park around 0.6 miles away. It is a sensible walk for most supporters, but it is materially less convenient than Leonardo if getting back to the room immediately after full time is the priority.
The trade-off
Recent Tripadvisor evidence is mixed enough that this should not be presented as a no-caveat premium recommendation.

YOUR GROUND / YOUR STAY
Where’s the football? We’ll help with the overnight bit.
Choose the club whose ground you’re visiting. Compare the published hotel choices, then select the match to take its date into the booking partner.
Every club has a route into its guide. Published hotel depth varies; we’ll say when a shortlist is still being developed.
THREE WAYS TO MAKE A NIGHT OF IT
What matters after the match?
The same hotel won’t suit every trip. Decide what you want from the overnight stay, then weigh the compromises.
01 / THE WALK BACK
Keep the ground within reach.
A straightforward walk back can be welcome after an evening kick-off. Check the actual route, and what’s nearby once the crowds have gone.
02 / THE EVENING
Stay where the night has options.
If you want a meal and a couple of pubs after the match, a proper centre can be worth the extra journey to the turnstiles.
03 / THE RAIL ARRIVAL
Make the luggage leg easy.
A station-side base can save carrying bags across town. The useful question is how the hotel, station and ground work together.
THE SHORTLIST HAS TO EARN ITS PLACE
More gets considered than makes the page.
There’s usually a tempting option: the cheapest room, the hotel nearest the stadium, the one with the smartest photographs. None tells the whole story.
Our research considers a wider field. Some places fall away because of awkward connections, an isolated location, price or recurring concerns in reviews. The published choices come with reasons to stay and compromises worth knowing.
Location, reputation, price context and practical travel.

A COMMERCIAL LINK STILL NEEDS AN EDITORIAL REASON
The useful bit comes before the booking button.
Hotel links can earn us commission. That is how this part of the website is supported, and we explain it openly. The recommendation still needs to make sense for a football trip: where you’ll be, how you’ll get around and what you give up by choosing it.
