What this club is really about
Grimsby Town makes most sense as a piece of local continuity. The trawler fleet that created the Mariners nickname has largely gone, but the language of the sea remains everywhere: Mariners, Codheads, Harry Haddock, 'We Only Sing When We're Fishing', the old Findus association and the stubborn sense that Town represents working Grimsby and Cleethorpes together. The sporting story has the same shape. There were genuine national-level heights in the 1930s, long second-tier spells, then relegations and six-season and one-season descents into non-League. Supporters repeatedly responded by putting in money, miles, noise and organisational labour.
