FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW GRIMSBY TOWN TO CHESTERFIELD

Recent results give Grimsby Town one points from a possible fifteen, with one draw and four defeats in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, Chesterfield have taken five points from a possible fifteen: one win, two draws and two defeats.

Grimsby Town are 17th in League Two after 12 league games, with 14 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition. Grimsby Town are three points off 7th and the last play-off place. That is a gap to work on, not a reason to assume a place is already within reach.

Chesterfield are 9th in League Two after 12 league games, with 16 points. They started the campaign regarded as promotion favourites. Chesterfield are one point off 7th and the last play-off place. That is a gap to work on, not a reason to assume a place is already within reach.

The destination is SMH Group Stadium in Chesterfield. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. Choose the ground area when the priority is getting from room to turnstile with almost no transport planning: Casa is the standout. Choose the town centre when arriving by rail or when drinks and food after the match matter more; expect a roughly half-hour walk back from the ground, or use a taxi.

For Grimsby Town supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Casa Hotel

Casa Hotel

Whittington Moor / Lockoford Lane

For a normal Chesterfield match trip, Casa is the most complete answer. It is close enough to the stadium that the hotel-to-ground leg barely needs planning, while still being a full-service independent four-star rather than simply the nearest bed. Booking.com currently scores it 9.0/10 across more than 2,800 reviews, with particularly strong comfort and cleanliness scores.

  • About 0.1 mile from SMH Group Stadium; third-party mapping lists a 2-minute walk and the club's official rail-to-ground route runs along the hotel boundary.
  • Current Booking.com score of 9.0/10 with strong comfort, cleanliness and staff sub-scores.
The match journey

Hotels.com/Expedia list SMH Group Stadium at about 0.1 mile / 2 minutes; allow roughly 2–3 minutes depending on the entrance used. The club's official pedestrian route from the station runs along the Casa boundary.

Casa Hotel

Our view

For a normal Chesterfield match trip, Casa is the most complete answer. It is close enough to the stadium that the hotel-to-ground leg barely needs planning, while still being a full-service independent four-star rather than simply the nearest bed. Booking.com currently scores it 9.0/10 across more than 2,800 reviews, with particularly strong comfort and cleanliness scores. It is not the best choice for someone who wants to step straight into the town-centre pub circuit, and recent reviews contain a small number of credible noise, cleaning and room-condition complaints, so it should not be sold as flawless.

Why it suits this trip

  • About 0.1 mile from SMH Group Stadium; third-party mapping lists a 2-minute walk and the club's official rail-to-ground route runs along the hotel boundary.
  • Current Booking.com score of 9.0/10 with strong comfort, cleanliness and staff sub-scores.
  • Independent four-star with 24-hour reception, restaurant, bar, free parking and accessible-room provision.
  • Barca Bar and Cocina give supporters an on-site fallback for food and drinks when they do not want to head into the centre.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified.

Getting to the ground

Hotels.com/Expedia list SMH Group Stadium at about 0.1 mile / 2 minutes; allow roughly 2–3 minutes depending on the entrance used. The club's official pedestrian route from the station runs along the Casa boundary.

Pubs and the evening

Casa has its own Barca Bar and Cocina and there are matchday pubs/food nearby, but supporters wanting a wider evening should head into the town centre.

Arriving by train

The official station-to-stadium walking route is roughly 30 minutes and passes along the Casa Hotel boundary shortly before the ground. With luggage, a short taxi is the easier option.

The trade-offs

  • Usually one of the dearer practical football options in Chesterfield.
  • Whittington Moor is useful on matchday but is not Chesterfield's main nightlife area.
  • Recent September 2026 guest feedback includes isolated but material complaints about function/corridor noise, room cleaning and signs of wear.
  • The hotel can be busy with functions and events, which may matter to light sleepers.

Research price context

Typically about £145–£155 midweek across this sample, with one £197 outlier; roughly £125–£175 at weekends. The sampled weekends were not consistently dearer than midweek.

Chesterfield town centre / Beetwell Street

The Spread Eagle is the better overnight base when the football trip includes a proper evening in Chesterfield. It is a historic town-centre pub with six en-suite rooms, food and a bar downstairs, and the market and central drinking/eating streets are close by. Booking.com currently scores it 8.7/10 from more than 500 reviews.

  • Town-centre location close to the market, pubs, bars and restaurants.
  • Pub, restaurant and rooms are in the same building, useful after an evening fixture.
The match journey

KAYAK lists the stadium at about 1.3 miles. Allow roughly 25–35 minutes on foot depending on the exact route and entrance; a taxi is the easier post-match choice for many supporters.

Our view

The Spread Eagle is the better overnight base when the football trip includes a proper evening in Chesterfield. It is a historic town-centre pub with six en-suite rooms, food and a bar downstairs, and the market and central drinking/eating streets are close by. Booking.com currently scores it 8.7/10 from more than 500 reviews. The price is usually below Casa, but the ground is a meaningful walk rather than next door and the small historic building brings compromises: stairs, some hot-room comments, and a few inconsistent comfort/service reports.

Why it suits this trip

  • Town-centre location close to the market, pubs, bars and restaurants.
  • Pub, restaurant and rooms are in the same building, useful after an evening fixture.
  • Booking.com score of 8.7/10 with strong location, cleanliness, comfort and value sub-scores.
  • Usually cheaper than Casa in the sampled dates.
  • Around a 10-minute walk from Chesterfield station, making it a strong rail-arrival base.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified.

Getting to the ground

KAYAK lists the stadium at about 1.3 miles. Allow roughly 25–35 minutes on foot depending on the exact route and entrance; a taxi is the easier post-match choice for many supporters.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel is itself a pub/restaurant and sits close to the market and central bars. Destination Chesterfield also identifies Holywell Street and Corporation Street as key town-centre bar streets.

Arriving by train

Roughly 0.5 mile from the station; allow around 10 minutes on foot. This makes it notably easier for rail arrivals than the stadium-area hotels.

The trade-offs

  • The stadium is around 1.3 miles away by listed proximity; allow roughly 25–35 minutes on foot depending on route.
  • Only six bedrooms, so availability can disappear quickly.
  • Historic layout includes stairs and is not the strongest option for reduced mobility.
  • Recent reviews include comments about hot rooms/no air-conditioning, mattress comfort and breakfast inconsistency.
  • One August 2026 Tripadvisor review makes serious allegations about a management dispute; it is an isolated guest account and is not treated as established fact.

Research price context

Usually around £95–£110 midweek in this sample, rising to roughly £100–£150 on Friday/Saturday nights. The sampled weekend average was about 15% higher.

What to expect at Chesterfield

All the key information for Grimsby Town supporters heading to SMH Group Stadium — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

YOUR AWAY DAY · SMH Group Stadium

The ground

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

Modern and compact rather than romantic or eccentric. The strongest character comes from what has been deliberately carried into it: loud home support behind the goal, club-history displays, memorial space, supporter-funded traces of Saltergate and Community Trust activity around the site.

Views from the away section

Away views are unrestricted with spacious legroom.

Why the ground matters

The SMH Group Stadium matters because it solved problems Saltergate could no longer solve without erasing the club's memory. Promotion in the first season gave it sporting legitimacy; the Community Trust's facilities, memorial garden and heritage installations gave it a civic role beyond ninety minutes.

South Stand

Behind the goal and described by the club as usually the noisiest home stand.

East Stand

Contains the usual away allocation at its northern end and has also hosted club heritage displays.

The HUB / Community Trust facilities

Makes the stadium a base for community programmes as well as first-team football.

Memorial Garden

Living memorial space, war memorial, Saltergate memory-site and location of annual remembrance events.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · SMH Group Stadium

Atmosphere & acoustics

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

Covered end and close home sections can create strong noise.

From the supporters

Supporter observation

The low roof over Chesterfield's visiting section gives the away end a useful acoustic boost. With a decent following behind the team, chants carry well and the section can sound much bigger than its size suggests.

Annual Memorial Garden celebration

Names of supporters, officials and former players lost during the year are read out, keeping remembrance embedded in the club calendar.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Food & drink

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

By rail, Chesterfield station is the starting point rather than the drinking destination: the club’s signed walking route to the SMH Group Stadium takes about 30 minutes and finishes beside Casa Hotel. For a town-centre meet, Pig & Pump by the Crooked Spire gives rail arrivals food and real ale; for a football-first stop, carry on to Sheffield Road.

Food and drink around the ground

The Derby Tup is the safest away-pub call, explicitly welcoming visiting supporters and seven minutes from the ground, with Beer Parlour and Glassworks useful alternatives. Donkey Derby needs more care: recent supporter evidence calls it predominantly home but says booked away diners have been admitted in colours.

Near the turnstiles, Batch House is the strongest food choice, with several independent kitchens opposite the stadium; North Sea Fish Bar, Chesters and Afat’s add chippy and proper-meal options. Away fans now use East Stand block E1, with E2/E3 possible. For overnight trips, Casa is ground-side; the town-centre hotel area suits station, pubs and evening food. Check fixture notices for local derbies and higher-risk games.

Derby Tup

The safest football pub pick: Chesterfield’s current guide explicitly sends visiting supporters here and CAMRA independently says it accepts both sets of fans. It is a seven-minute, flat walk north of the turnstiles, with a strong real-ale line-up.

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

If you need accessible parking, contact Chesterfield’s ticket office before travelling rather than relying on a general car park. The club reserves four spaces near the visiting entrance, but warns these may be released to home supporters if not taken 48 hours before kick-off. Ask about the cost, drop-off and the exact approach for your fixture. Visiting wheelchair supporters are accommodated with the away fans, normally at the front of East Stand block E2.

Rail, Underground & tram

Chesterfield station has step-free access to its platforms, but the club’s direct walking route includes steps; station accessibility does not mean the whole journey is step-free. Check your return train before travelling, particularly for evening fixtures.

Station to ground & away entrance

Follow Stonegravels Way from Chesterfield station, crossing over the dual carriageway. Turn right down the steps, then use Infirmary Road past Chesterfield College and continue along Canal Wharf. At Hazlehurst Lane, take the path beside the dual carriageway past Casa Hotel towards Lockoford Lane. At the stadium, head to the Chesterfield College Community East Stand rather than assuming the main West Stand entrance is yours.

Visiting fans normally use E1, with additional East Stand blocks opened for larger allocations. Check your ticket and the stewards’ signs for the correct E turnstile, because allocations differ between fixtures.

Buses & local travel

For a bus to the ground, head towards Chesterfield’s town-centre stops and take a service travelling north along Sheffield Road. If arriving by train, allow time to reach a suitable town-centre stop or take a taxi from the station. Check your return bus before kick-off: Stagecoach is changing some Chesterfield timetables from 25 October 2026, and late-evening or Sunday journeys may differ.

Parking

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

Book an authorised matchday space if you want the simplest, shortest walk to Chesterfield’s away end. The stadium has limited pre-booked or permit-controlled spaces, and the club introduced ANPR controls for 2026/27. The best straightforward choice for many visiting drivers is to reserve parking at Tesco Extra on Lockoford Lane through YourParkingSpace before setting off. That Tesco listing allows matchday-length bookings and is immediately beside the stadium.

Parking & park-and-ride

It is different from using the supermarket’s ordinary customer spaces without a booking. Ordinary customer parking has separate signposted terms, so do not assume shopping parking is valid for a football visit. Free street parking is possible in the wider area, but we cannot recommend a confirmed, unrestricted stretch close to the away entrance.

Derbyshire lists marked free bays on Old Hall Road and Wheatbridge Road without identifying usable sections for this journey. Visiting guides suggest side roads off Sheffield Road, yet some Sheffield Road bays have one- or two-hour limits. Avoid access-only Sanforth Crescent and Nelson Street. For a paid fallback that does not require searching residential streets, use the council’s Station Approach car park, S41 7UA.

It costs £3.10 for up to 24 hours, is open around the clock and takes RingGo only. Expect a longer walk via the station-side route; its 85 spaces are not a reservation or availability guarantee. For a typical league match, allow at least four hours of parking, and more for pre-match food or a long walk. Arrive around 60–90 minutes before kick-off, especially for a larger fixture.

Choose a booking covering your entire visit, and check later return arrangements if it is an evening match or a cup tie with possible extra time.

Worth knowing

Grimsby Town at Chesterfield

For a visiting supporter, Chesterfield is most interesting when the new ground is read as the latest chapter of an old town club rather than as a generic edge-of-town stadium. The Spireites name, the South Stand noise, the Memorial Garden and the 1997/Saltergate references make the identity legible even to somebody attending once.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Chesterfield railway station for the SMH Group Stadium. It is the nearest practical rail arrival point, with a club-published walking route taking about 30 minutes. The station serves intercity and regional routes, and taxis are available outside if you would rather avoid the walk.

Allow enough time for the walk and the queue at your allocated East Stand entrance. Chesterfield station has step-free access to its platforms, but the club’s direct walking route includes steps; station accessibility does not mean the whole journey is step-free. Check your return train before travelling, particularly for evening fixtures.

Coaches

Away coaches

If you are travelling on an official away supporters’ coach, use the drop-off and collection instructions from your operator. Chesterfield says coaches are now parked off-site, so do not assume your vehicle will wait in the stadium car park throughout the match.

The club’s away-fan guide identifies The Red Lion on Sheffield Road as an away-friendly pub with coach parking that must be arranged directly with the venue. That is not an automatic matchday coach allocation. The exact drop-off and return meeting point should come from the coach organiser or Chesterfield before the fixture; allow time to get back after the final whistle.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

If you need accessible parking, contact Chesterfield’s ticket office before travelling rather than relying on a general car park. The club reserves four spaces near the visiting entrance, but warns these may be released to home supporters if not taken 48 hours before kick-off. Ask about the cost, drop-off and the exact approach for your fixture.

Visiting wheelchair supporters are accommodated with the away fans, normally at the front of East Stand block E2. Wheelchair and personal-assistant tickets need advance arrangements; contact the club on 01246 269300 or the Disability Liaison Officer at dlo@chesterfield-fc.co.uk. Chesterfield railway station has step-free platform access, but the direct club walking route includes steps, so arrange an accessible onward journey separately.

After the match

After the match

After the final whistle, follow your allocated East Stand exit and the stewarded pedestrian route. If you parked in the stadium car park, do not plan an immediate departure: Chesterfield has published a request to remain in your bay for 30 minutes or until stewards release vehicles.

For a train home, allow the club’s roughly 30-minute walk back to Chesterfield station, plus time to leave the stand and reach your platform. If driving from Tesco, expect pedestrian and car traffic around Sheffield Road; a longer walk back to Station Approach may make for a calmer getaway, but exit times have not been verified. Agree a precise coach meeting point with your organiser.

Where to stay

Stay near Chesterfield town centre if you are coming by train or want pubs, restaurants and an easier return towards the station. It gives you more to do after the match, while leaving a roughly half-hour walk or a taxi ride to the stadium. Look around the market and central streets when choosing accommodation.

If being close to the turnstiles matters most, Casa Hotel on Lockoford Lane is the obvious ground-side option. It sits by the club’s walking route and near the stadium, but Whittington Moor has fewer evening choices than the centre. For a straightforward Saturday afternoon visit with an easy journey home, there is no need to book a hotel.

Derby Tup

BEST FORsafest away-pub choice · real ale · pre-match pint
MATCHDAY INTELThe safest football pub pick: Chesterfield’s current guide explicitly sends visiting supporters here and CAMRA independently says it accepts both sets of fans. It is a seven-minute, flat walk north of the turnstiles, with a strong real-ale line-up.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent CAMRA hours supersede the club guide: Saturday opening is noon, not 11am, and normal Saturday food service is not listed. Colours policy remains unpublished.

BEST FORtrain-arrival meeting point · proper meal · mixed-age groups
MATCHDAY INTELThe useful town-centre meeting point for rail arrivals who want food before committing to Sheffield Road. It sits opposite the Crooked Spire, serves local pub food and real ale, and was recommended in a recent visiting-fan forum thread.
WORTH KNOWINGNo published away-fan or colours policy was found. It is a town-centre stop, not a ground-side pub, so leave enough time for the walk north.

Donkey Derby

405-407 Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, S41 8JZ
4 min walkAway access: checkFamily friendlyFood available
BEST FORpre-booked meal · families · groups with confirmed table
MATCHDAY INTELBest treated as a food-booking option, not an automatic away pub. A recent disabled-supporter report calls it predominantly home but says their away group is admitted when they book food, even in colours; it is only four minutes from the ground.
WORTH KNOWINGAccess can change by fixture and it gets full. If using it as an away group, book a table and confirm admission rather than relying on general pub opening hours.
PUB / BAR

Glassworks

388 Sheffield Road, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, S41 8LF
1 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORvery near ground · real ale · late pre-match pint
MATCHDAY INTELThe closest credible pub option: directly opposite the stadium, with Brampton ales, guest beer and sports screens. Newport and Bradford visiting guides have treated it as an away option, although Chesterfield’s latest guide now foregrounds the Derby Tup instead.
WORTH KNOWINGAway access is supported by visiting guides rather than a current venue policy. CAMRA says its outside bar opens on home matchdays; that does not itself guarantee away admission.
PUB / BAR

The Beer Parlour

405 Sheffield Road, Whittington Moor, Chesterfield, S41 8LS
5 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORreal ale · small groups · ground-side alternative
MATCHDAY INTELA proper beer stop tucked just off Sheffield Road: up to eight changing ales, football on TV and a five-minute walk. Grimsby’s visiting guide lists it as an away option, backed by recent local Reddit recommendations.
WORTH KNOWINGThe venue gives 405 Sheffield Road; CAMRA/maps also use 1 King Street North. Treat that as an entrance/address discrepancy, and do not assume a football-colours policy.
