What this club is really about
Chesterfield's strongest identity is civic rather than glamorous. The Spireites nickname turns the town's unmistakable Crooked Spire into football language; Saltergate supplied 139 years of memory; and the club's modern survival story includes a supporters' rescue in 2001 and a Community Trust rescue in 2020. The 1997 FA Cup semi-final sits in the middle of that story as the great sporting near-miss: a third-tier team, a goal that should have counted, a local lad equalising late, and supporters proud even before the result was rescued.
