What this club is really about
Stockport County makes most sense as an argument for local distinctiveness. The club began in Heaton Norris, adopted the borough's name, took the Hatters nickname from Stockport's defining industry and has been rooted at Edgeley Park for well over a century. Its supporters have memories at both extremes: Danny Bergara, Kevin Francis, four early-1990s Wembley trips, a League Cup semi-final and an eighth-place finish in the second tier; then administration, loss of Football League status and six seasons in National League North. The important point is not simply that County came back. It is that the long way down made the ground, the name and the act of still turning up carry more weight.
