Everton

A Liverpool club whose sense of itself is built from place, family inheritance and demanding standards: Everton left Goodison in 2025, but carried the Lock-Up, Z-Cars, the Toffee Lady and a century of argument about what Everton ought to be down to the docks.

Identity & place

What this club is really about

Everton identity is unusually layered. The name belongs to an old Liverpool district; the club grew through Stanley Park and Anfield before Goodison became the men's home for 133 years; the modern stadium now rises from a working-dock landscape beside the Mersey. Supporters inherit not just famous teams but a language of standards — Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, the School of Science, the People's Club — which makes long periods without trophies feel not merely disappointing but somehow out of keeping with the club's idea of itself. That tension explains much of the humour, impatience, loyalty and protest around Everton.

  1. Founder-club status and top-flight continuity

Everton were one of the Football League's 12 founder members. Their sense of scale comes partly from longevity at the top level, not only from trophies.

  3. The 1960s and the Holy Trinity

The 1966 FA Cup comeback and the 1970 champions sit at the heart of older supporter memory. Alan Ball, Howard Kendall and Colin Harvey became the Holy Trinity of that…

Why that identity still matters

The move to Hill Dickinson Stadium, the 2024 takeover and years of survival fights might have broken the visual continuity of the men's matchday, but they have made identity more consciously curated. Goodison remains in use for Everton Women, Everton in the Community remains in L4, the Heritage Society has moved its matchday operation from St Luke's to the new stadium area, and old rituals have been carried across the city. The club is in a new building but is still arguing with its own past — which is a very Everton way to begin a new era.

Which toffee shop made the Toffees?

Everton has competing sweet-shop origin stories involving the old Everton village and matchgoing. The safest version is that local toffee culture clearly fed the nickname, while the single definitive shop-and-date story is not proven.
