Newport County

A club rebuilt by its own supporters after collapse, still carrying the memory of exile into a modern identity shaped by amber shirts, survival scrapes, improbable cup nights and an old rugby ground beside the Usk.

What this club is really about

County's industrial beginnings gave way to a supporter-led new start in 1989. After liquidation, fans met at the Lysaght Institute, financed a new club and travelled 85 miles to home games while fighting to return to Newport and the Football League. The Exiles name recalls that experience. It also explains why survival and a say in the club's future mean so much to supporters.

Why that identity still matters

The Trust has lost its majority but retains a substantial shareholding and elected directors. Small holdings bought during the 1989 rescue still survive. County has a long lease at shared Rodney Parade, while recent financial pressure and protests keep survival an immediate concern. Amber shirts, the claxon, 'Come On The County' and 'Hi-Ho Newport County' belong to a club supporters remember rebuilding after it disappeared.

Would goal-line technology have sent County to Benfica?

David Hando's history preserves supporters' speculation that modern technology might have produced a different decision against Carl Zeiss Jena. It is an enduring what-if about the tie, without proving Newport were denied a semi-final.
