What this club is really about
Southampton’s best identity story is unusually coherent. The club began with St Mary’s churchmen, so 'Saints' is ancestry rather than marketing. It spent more than a century at the compact, eccentric Dell, then moved in 2001 to a bigger ground back in the St Mary’s district where the story had started. Around that sit two other durable ideas: a port city looking towards the Solent, and a club that expects its academy to produce first-team footballers rather than merely decorate a brochure.
