What this club is really about

AFC Bournemouth make most sense when the story starts in Boscombe rather than with the Premier League. The club spent generations as a modest Football League side at Dean Court, survived a supporter-led rescue in 1997, came close to disappearing again in 2008 and began 2008/09 on minus 17 before Steve Fletcher and a 31-year-old Eddie Howe helped keep it in the League. The later rise matters because many supporters remember when the basic question was not how high Bournemouth could finish, but whether there would still be a club to watch.

  3. Redknapp's first peak

Harry Redknapp's Bournemouth knocked FA Cup holders Manchester United out in 1984, won the inaugural Associate Members' Cup, then took the Third Division title in 1987.

Why that identity still matters

The old survival stories are not decorative nostalgia. They explain the attachment to Dean Court, the esteem in which figures such as Fletcher and Howe are held, and why stadium ownership, capacity and supporter voice carry extra meaning. They also stop the modern story becoming too tidy: the rise depended on serious private investment as well as community memory. In 2026/27 the club is simultaneously living its first European season and rebuilding its tiny historic home, so questions of growth and continuity are unusually visible.

Why 'the Cherries'?

Two stories endure: the nickname came from cherry-red shirts, or from cherry trees/orchards associated with the Cooper-Dean estate near Dean Court. Neither should be written as settled fact.
