Brighton & Hove Albion

A Sussex club whose modern top-flight polish rests on a supporter memory of almost losing its home and league place, then fighting its way back to Brighton and finally to Falmer.

Identity & place

What this club is really about

For many Albion supporters, the key to understanding the club is not recruitment models or recent Premier League finishes but the sequence Goldstone → protest → Hereford → Gillingham → Withdean → Falmer. The club's supporters did not merely wait for a better ground: they organised, boycotted, marched, lobbied, built alliances with fans of other clubs and turned survival into part of the culture. That gives present-day success a particular frame. The Amex is valued not simply because it is modern, but because there was a long period when Albion had no permanent home at all.

Living identity

Why that identity still matters

The survival era is now deliberately kept visible: Fans United is commemorated, protest culture survives in song and oral history, the Goldstone is marked in Hove, supporter historians preserve artefacts, and a permanent city-museum gallery opened in 2026. At the same time, newer generations have their own reference points — Zamora, the Amex homecoming, Premier League promotion, Europe, Dunk and the Bloom era. The result is a club whose identity is unusually conscious of the distance between near-extinction and the present.

The Devil and the Goldstone

Local folklore says the Devil, digging Devil's Dyke to flood Sussex churches, stubbed his toe on the boulder and kicked it into Goldstone Valley.
