FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW YORK CITY TO SWINDON TOWN

This fixture is still months away, on 20 February. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If York City are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

York City are 6th in League Two after 11 league games, with 17 points. Set that against the summer expectation: promotion favourites.

York City come into the current picture with one win, three draws and one defeat across their last five league games, worth six points from a possible fifteen. Swindon Town's last five recorded league games brought one win, two draws and two defeats: five points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Swindon Town are 15th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

The destination is The Nigel Eady County Ground in Swindon. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For the best all-round football trip, stay around Fleming Way, Princes Street or the wider town centre: the ground, railway station and central food/drink are all walkable. Choose Old Town instead if the post-match evening is a bigger priority than being beside the station; it is the stronger food-and-drink district but sits uphill to the south. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

An away day is a chance to follow York City somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Leonardo Hotel Swindon

Leonardo Hotel Swindon

Town centre / Fleming Way

The best balance for a Swindon Town overnight: close enough to walk to The County Ground, properly convenient for the station, stronger current review evidence than the nearest budget alternatives, and often priced like a good three-star despite being a full-service four-star.

  • Tripadvisor's current County Ground proximity page lists it at about 0.4 miles from the stadium.
  • Short walk to Swindon station and the town centre, so no taxi is normally needed for a rail-based trip.
The match journey

Current Tripadvisor proximity data lists about 0.4 miles. Route-based platforms vary around 9-12 minutes / roughly 0.5-0.6 miles depending on entrance and route. Travelodge is similarly close, but Leonardo is the more practical MatchdayHotels pick because of the stronger room/reputation package and verified Booking.com coverage.

The trade-off

Old Town is the better district for an evening of independent pubs, bars and restaurants; getting there means an uphill walk or short taxi/bus.

WHY STAY HERE?

Leonardo Hotel Swindon

Town centre / Fleming Way

Our view

The best balance for a Swindon Town overnight: close enough to walk to The County Ground, properly convenient for the station, stronger current review evidence than the nearest budget alternatives, and often priced like a good three-star despite being a full-service four-star. It is not in Old Town's main bar circuit, but that is a manageable trade-off for supporters who want the match, train and hotel to fit together cleanly.

Why it suits this trip

  • Tripadvisor's current County Ground proximity page lists it at about 0.4 miles from the stadium.
  • Short walk to Swindon station and the town centre, so no taxi is normally needed for a rail-based trip.
  • Current official facilities include air-conditioning, bar, restaurant, 24-hour reception and luggage storage.
  • Booking.com coverage was directly verified, with an 8.6/10 score from 5,441 reviews in the live search results.
  • Recent Tripadvisor evidence is strong on room cleanliness, comfort and central location.
  • Ordinary sampled rates were notably competitive for a four-star central hotel.

Getting to the ground

Current Tripadvisor proximity data lists about 0.4 miles. Route-based platforms vary around 9-12 minutes / roughly 0.5-0.6 miles depending on entrance and route. Travelodge is similarly close, but Leonardo is the more practical MatchdayHotels pick because of the stronger room/reputation package and verified Booking.com coverage.

Pubs and the evening

Central drinks/food are nearby, but Swindon's strongest independent nightlife cluster is Old Town rather than Fleming Way. Old Town is roughly a 15-minute uphill walk from the modern centre.

Arriving by train

A short central walk; official hotel material describes the property as a short walk from the station and town centre.

The trade-offs

  • Old Town is the better district for an evening of independent pubs, bars and restaurants; getting there means an uphill walk or short taxi/bus.
  • On-site parking is limited and chargeable, with overflow/public parking nearby.
  • Some recent reviews describe breakfast crowding at busy times and occasional room/car-park noise.
  • The market can spike unexpectedly: a £159.30 Tuesday was found and excluded from the normal baseline as an outlier.

Research price context

Typically about £63-£77 on the sampled ordinary midweeks and roughly £68 on the sampled Fridays. One Tuesday rose to £159, showing that event/demand spikes do occur.

The Goddard Arms

The Goddard Arms

Old Town

Pick The Goddard Arms when the evening matters as much as the football. You are sleeping in Old Town itself, with Wood Street, High Street, Devizes Road and Victoria Road's pubs, bars and restaurants around you, and the property is a pub in its own right. The cost is a longer walk to both the ground and station, plus the very real possibility of late-night street/pub noise.

  • Directly in Old Town, the part of Swindon most consistently identified for independent food, drink and nightlife.
  • Pub-with-rooms format suits a football overnight without needing to travel elsewhere for a drink.
The match journey

Hotels.com cross-check puts The County Ground at about 1.4 km / 17 minutes on foot. This is practical, but not as easy as the central choices.

The trade-off

Less convenient for the railway station than the central hotels and involves Old Town's hill.

Our view

Pick The Goddard Arms when the evening matters as much as the football. You are sleeping in Old Town itself, with Wood Street, High Street, Devizes Road and Victoria Road's pubs, bars and restaurants around you, and the property is a pub in its own right. The cost is a longer walk to both the ground and station, plus the very real possibility of late-night street/pub noise.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly in Old Town, the part of Swindon most consistently identified for independent food, drink and nightlife.
  • Pub-with-rooms format suits a football overnight without needing to travel elsewhere for a drink.
  • Booking.com coverage was directly verified; live search result showed 8.0/10 from 1,493 reviews.
  • Recent accommodation reviews praise value, cleanliness, comfortable beds and the Old Town location.
  • Still walkable to The County Ground for supporters happy with a roughly 15-20 minute walk.

Getting to the ground

Hotels.com cross-check puts The County Ground at about 1.4 km / 17 minutes on foot. This is practical, but not as easy as the central choices.

Pubs and the evening

This is the key reason to stay here. Current local guidance describes Old Town as Swindon's strongest food, drink and nightlife district, and The Goddard Arms sits on High Street within that cluster.

Arriving by train

Roughly a 20-25 minute walk depending on route, with the Old Town hill; a short taxi is more attractive with luggage.

The trade-offs

  • Less convenient for the railway station than the central hotels and involves Old Town's hill.
  • Street/pub-night noise is a genuine issue for some rooms; a rear room is the sensible request for light sleepers.
  • The pub/restaurant review picture is more mixed than the accommodation review picture, particularly for food consistency.
  • Limited parking rather than the simpler central rail-first proposition.

Research price context

The sampled pattern was unusually consistent: about £94 on ordinary midweeks and £105 on sampled Fridays, a noticeable but not extreme weekend premium.

What to expect at Swindon Town

All the key information for York City supporters heading to The Nigel Eady County Ground — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

#YCFC
YOUR AWAY DAY · The Nigel Eady County Ground

The ground

York City at Swindon Town

Traditional, open and visibly evolved rather than master-planned. The contrast between side stands, Town End and open Stratton Bank reads as accumulated football history. From outside, the old-style floodlight pylons still advertise that a football ground is nearby before a visitor reaches the turnstiles.

Views from the away section

Best side-on views are strong, but away sections are not always in the optimum central sightline.

The County Ground’s away allocation sits in part of the Arkells Stand; current ground guidance notes that this section is not the strongest viewing position in the stadium, so the side-on location does not automatically mean the best angle.

Why the ground matters

The County Ground is not merely where Swindon play; it is the piece of the club supporters now partly control. Its age, piecemeal stands and visible pylons carry the physical continuity of a club that has played there since 1896, while the 2023 purchase converted decades of anxiety about ownership into a formal supporter stake.

John Trollope Arkells Stand

Main side stand and, as of July 2026, the primary visiting-supporter location at its far end.

Don Rogers Stand

Named for the 1969 hero; the current sensory room is located in its concourse.

Town End

Longstanding focal point for home noise; current supporter debate over standing and age restrictions makes it culturally important as well as architectural.

Stratton Bank

Uncovered end used as away overflow under current arrangements, one of the ground's most obviously old-fashioned visual features.

Traditional floodlight pylons

Swindon installed floodlights in 1951; the surviving pylons remain easy to spot from outside and are repeatedly noted by ground visitors.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Nigel Eady County Ground

Atmosphere & acoustics

York City at Swindon Town

Can be lively with a large following; open geometry reduces some noise retention.

The Town End as the vocal home end

The Trust describes it as the centre of noise and passion for decades. Current restrictions around standing and under-18s show that how the space is used remains live supporter business.

COYR

A compact 'Come On You Reds' sign-off used in supporter communications rather than a uniquely Swindon song.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Nigel Eady County Ground

Food & drink

York City at Swindon Town

Swindon is straightforward by rail: meet near Swindon station if your group is arriving separately, then follow Station Road, Corporation Street and Manchester Road to County Road. The club puts the walk at about ten minutes, though allow longer for a pint and the Arkells away turnstiles. The Merlin, beside the Magic Roundabout, is the clearest conventional away pub; Swindon Cricket Club can work too when its clubhouse is open.

Food and drink around the ground

Rail arrivals wanting proper beer and food can divert to the Glue Pot or Drink Valley. Do not assume the station-side Queens Tap admits away fans: a 2026 report says otherwise. At the ground, Bar 71 serves the away end when operating, separately from the home-only bar, and the Arkells kiosk takes cards. For food, Manchester Road has takeaway choices, while Magic Chippy's published 3pm Saturday opening makes it better after the match.

Old Town's pubs and independent restaurants suit a longer visit or overnight stay rather than a rushed station-to-stadium dash. Colours, cricket fixtures and external food-trader attendance all need checking for your match.

The away wheelchair places are in a covered area at the front of the Arkells Stand, with accessible toilets nearby.

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the away turnstiles at the Stratton Bank end of the John Trollope Arkells Stand, rather than the club’s main ticket office. The official ground plan puts the away ticket sales point beside these entrances, so check which block and stand appear on your ticket. From the station, follow Corporation Street and Manchester Road to County Road and use the signed stadium approach.

A large visiting allocation may also use the Stratton Bank, so do not assume every away ticket leads to the same entrance. Ask a steward before joining the wrong queue.

Buses & local travel

Walking from Swindon station is normally simpler than waiting for a bus. The ground is close to the town centre, and the club directs visitors to County Road via Manchester Road. If walking is unsuitable, ask for a taxi at the station or check the town bus options before setting off. Swindon’s Bus Company runs service 17 between the town centre and Park South, with stops around County Road Corner.

Board at Fleming Way and check the correct direction and return service on the operator’s timetable. The club also lists stops on Queens Drive, but older route numbers should not be treated as current without checking.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Nigel Eady County Ground

Parking

York City at Swindon Town

You can try to find free street parking, but there is no specific stretch near the County Ground that I can confidently recommend as unrestricted. If you want a straightforward matchday arrival, use an authorised paid car park rather than spending the final half-hour circling residential roads. Booking is worthwhile if you need to arrive close to kick-off. St Joseph’s Catholic College on Ocotal Way welcomes home and away drivers.

Parking & park-and-ride

The club lists £5 parking on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early and have another option ready. The walk to the away end is longer than parking immediately at the stadium; check whether it suits anyone with limited mobility. For a predictable booking, Tesco Extra on Ocotal Way has a separate YourParkingSpace product advertised for Swindon matches.

It is about a six-minute walk from the ground and bookable for a chosen duration, with the normal shopper restrictions expressly excluded from paid reservations. Do not use ordinary customer parking for the game without separate permission. Spring Gardens multi-storey car park is the useful council fallback: 662 spaces and £7.50 all day, with a shorter-stay tariff too.

It closes at 8.30pm on Saturdays and does not open Sundays, so use another car park for Sunday games or late Saturday plans. Fleming Way is open around the clock, but its published short-stay tariff needs care for longer visits. Allow at least four hours for parking, the walks, the match and getting back to your car. Old supporter reports name Shrivenham Road, but they cannot establish which bays are legal today.

Check every sign, permit bay and yellow line; on the way home, expect traffic around County Road and the Magic Roundabout.

Parking verdict
Booking advised for certainty; legal free on-street parking may exist but no named section is currently verified as unrestricted.
Free option — anecdotal lead
Shrivenham Road mentioned in older fan report; not verified as unrestricted on either side or for full matchday stay.
Legal restrictions — borough

From the M4, the club directs traffic off at junction 15 via Commonhead Roundabout, Marlborough Road and Queens Drive. Coming from the Midlands, the club describes an approach via the M40, A43, A34 and A420 before Queens Drive.

The Magic Roundabout sits beside the stadium, so allow extra time on busy matchdays and follow its lane markings. No specific closure for a future fixture has been independently confirmed. If you are using Tesco’s booked parking or St Joseph’s College, navigate to Ocotal Way instead of the stadium gates. For council parking, navigate to the individual car park and keep the final walk in mind when choosing your arrival time.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Nigel Eady County Ground

Worth knowing

York City at Swindon Town

For an away supporter, the interesting part of Swindon is the collision of an old EFL ground with unusually modern supporter governance. You can stand within sight of traditional pylons and an open end at a stadium that supporters helped buy only in 2023. The best details are therefore not a pub list or parking tip but the physical signs of continuity: monuments, separate stands, the Town End, and a ground whose ownership story is still active.

Matchday features

Five covered away wheelchair spaces. Historic Arkell's brewery connection. Free/donation stadium tours via club museum

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

Don Rogers statue

It is not generic bronze decoration: supporters backed it to materialise the 1969 story at the stadium.

The four old-style pylons

They are both a visual landmark and a surviving link to Swindon's early adoption of floodlights.

How unlike a bowl the ground feels

The mismatch of stands and the open Stratton Bank show the ground's development in layers.

The stadium name

'Nigel Eady' encodes a supporter's posthumous role in putting the freehold into club-and-fan hands.

Arkells' £300 loan

Helped the club build its first stand after the 1896 move.

Nigel Eady legacy

Financed the 2023 acquisition that put the ground into equal club/supporter ownership.

STFC Museum

The museum is building a formal heritage presence around the ground through artefacts, tours, video testimony and monuments.

Buses

Buses & local travel

Walking from Swindon station is normally simpler than waiting for a bus. The ground is close to the town centre, and the club directs visitors to County Road via Manchester Road. If walking is unsuitable, ask for a taxi at the station or check the town bus options before setting off.

Swindon’s Bus Company runs service 17 between the town centre and Park South, with stops around County Road Corner. Board at Fleming Way and check the correct direction and return service on the operator’s timetable. The club also lists stops on Queens Drive, but older route numbers should not be treated as current without checking.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible parking directly with Swindon Town before you travel. The club’s disability policy identifies just two bays for visiting disabled supporters, with no extra spaces beyond existing allocations. There is a set-down point at the main County Road entrance, but confirm how to reach the away section from there.

The away wheelchair places are in a covered area at the front of the Arkells Stand, with accessible toilets nearby. The club also offers support through its disability liaison officer. Swindon railway station has lifts and step-free access to all platforms, though that does not by itself guarantee a step-free route from the station to the away stand.

After the match

After the match

If you arrive by train, use the same County Road, Manchester Road and Corporation Street route back to Swindon station. Leave enough time for the crowd to clear the turnstiles and for any queues at the station. National Rail is the place to check your actual final connection.

If driving, decide which side of town you need to leave from before picking your car park. Stadium parking may put you into traffic at the Magic Roundabout, and old visiting-fan reports mention delays releasing cars. A council or booked car park slightly farther away can make the walk longer but reduce the need to search for a space on arrival.

If using Spring Gardens, remember the Saturday evening closing time and Sunday closure. Confirm the location of your away coach before kick-off rather than assuming it will wait where it dropped you.

Rail return walk
Retrace County Road – Manchester Road – Corporation Street – Station Road to Swindon station.

Spring Gardens Saturday close

Where to stay

Stay around Fleming Way, Princes Street or the station if you want a straightforward football overnight trip. From here you can walk to the County Ground and back without relying on a late bus or finding matchday parking. Leonardo Hotel Swindon and Travelodge Swindon Central both have central locations within an easy walk of the railway station.

Old Town is a better choice if your evening in Swindon matters more than being near the station. It sits farther south, so expect a longer walk or taxi journey to the ground. If you are driving, do not assume hotel guest parking is available without registering: Leonardo requires registration and has a separate parking charge.

58–59 Devizes Road, Old Town, Swindon SN1 4BD
Away access: check
BEST FORlate-staying fans · beer choice
MATCHDAY INTELA small Old Town craft-beer bar with rotating cask and keg choices. Better for a longer post-match stop than a tightly timed matchday meal.

PUB / BAR

The Beehive

55 Prospect Hill, Old Town, Swindon SN1 3JS
Away access: check
BEST FORpost-match · overnight · real-ale fans
MATCHDAY INTELThe Beehive is an Old Town real-ale local with several rooms and regular music. Its matchday link is a reported post-game chip-butty tradition, not a meal service.
WORTH KNOWINGDo not count on the chip butties or assume entry in away colours; both should be checked for the fixture.
PUB / BAR

The Merlin

Drove Road, Swindon SN1 3AF
5 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORnear-ground pint · groups · food before turnstiles
MATCHDAY INTELThe most dependable conventional pub near the ground for visiting supporters: sports screens, room for groups and a proper meal rather than only bar snacks.
WORTH KNOWINGA local April 2026 report says it gets very busy around kick-off; arrive early, and ask about any fixture-specific restrictions.
PUB / BAR

Bar 71 (away supporters bar)

County Ground, by Arkells Stand away turnstiles, County Road, Swindon SN1 2ED
0 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORlate arrivals · groups not wishing to cross town
MATCHDAY INTELThe ground’s own guide marks Bar 71 beside the Arkells turnstiles. It suits supporters who want a drink close to their entrance without risking a home-only bar.
WORTH KNOWINGClub guidance says opening is subject to demand; visiting guides disagree over noon or 12.30pm starts, and evening fixtures differ.
PUB / BAR

The Glue Pot

5 Emlyn Square, Swindon SN1 5BP
Away access: check
BEST FORtrain arrivals · proper beer · quietish meet-up
MATCHDAY INTELFor a proper pint before the football, the Railway Village’s Glue Pot is worth the short detour from the station. Beer and cider are the reason to come, not lunch.
WORTH KNOWINGIt can be busy; arrive after its 11.30am Saturday opening and eat elsewhere if you need a meal.
PUB / BAR

The Drink Valley (Fleet Square)

Fleet Square, Swindon SN1 1RU
Away access: check
BEST FORtrain arrivals · pint and proper meal · smaller groups
MATCHDAY INTELThis is the strongest station-area beer-and-food combination: a small brewpub pouring local ales with Indian street food from lunchtime on Saturdays.
WORTH KNOWINGCheck kitchen capacity if arriving with a large away group. One supporter recommendation is not an admission guarantee for every fixture.
PUB / BAR

Swindon Cricket Club bar

Swindon Cricket Club, The County Ground, Swindon SN1 2EE
Away access: check
BEST FORshort walk · away groups · drivers already parked legitimately
MATCHDAY INTELThe cricket clubhouse is a genuine near-ground alternative and is repeatedly named by visiting clubs as a place that can admit away fans. It is not a guaranteed matchday bar.
WORTH KNOWINGCricket fixtures, private events and ground conditions can alter access; ring ahead, particularly in summer.
