BEFORE YOU SET OFF

Put your trip together

01 · Arrive

Your route into The Nigel Eady County Ground

Head for the away turnstiles at the Stratton Bank end of the John Trollope Arkells Stand, rather than the club’s main ticket office. The official ground plan puts the away ticket sales point beside these entrances, so check which block and stand appear on your ticket. From the station, follow Corporation Street and Manchester Road to County Road and use the signed stadium approach. A large visiting allocation may also use the Stratton Bank, so do not assume every away ticket leads to the same entrance. Ask a steward before joining the wrong queue.

02 · Before the match

Magic Chippy

Cod and chips, battered sausages, fishcakes, scampi, chip butties and burgers. Its own website lists a 3pm opening on Saturdays and Sunday closure; older guides suggesting pre-match chips are misleading.

03 · Stay or head home?

Choose your base before your hotel

Stay around Fleming Way, Princes Street or the station if you want a straightforward football overnight trip. From here you can walk to the County Ground and back without relying on a late bus or finding matchday parking.

Fish and chips

Magic Chippy

Good for after the game · evening fixture

The obvious local chippy has proper fish and chips and a useful spot by the Magic Roundabout. For a standard 3pm kick-off, though, it is an after-match option.

Expect chippy · quick takeaway · post match

Independent café breakfast and lunch

Kitchen on the Corner

Good for family breakfast · early rail arrival

A proper independent café by the Railway Village for breakfast or an unhurried lunch. Eat in or take something away before heading towards County Road.

Expect independent · cafe · daytime

Before you go It is west of the direct station-to-ground walk, so allow time for the detour.

Food & drink
Breakfast and café lunch menu, cakes, tea and coffee; exact dishes depend on current menu.

Kebabs and pizza

Swindon Kebab House

Good for late lunch · train-to-ground walk

A practical takeaway on the actual station-to-ground route, with grilled chicken, donner and pizza for supporters who would rather grab food than sit in a pub.

Expect on route · takeaway · quick food

Before you go Saturday hours conflict across ordering sites: its primary website says noon; another lists 1.30pm collection. Check before ordering.

Food & drink
Chicken shish, donner and spicy chicken kebabs, plus pizzas and burgers.

Bombay/Indian street food

Kutting Chai

Good for Indian food · early arrival

For a proper food stop in the centre, Kutting Chai serves Bombay-style street food rather than standard pub fare. It is a planned detour, not a grab-and-go stop beside the ground.

Expect independent food · street food · town centre

Before you go Check Saturday table or collection hours directly; a separate developer/test-order site carries unreliable timings.

Food & drink
Vada pav, biryani, Indian street food, chicken dishes and vegetarian choices shown in current ordering menus.
How it works
Restaurant and takeaway

39 Regent Circus, Swindon SN1 1PX

South Indian

Chennai Dosa

Good for proper brunch · families

For supporters with time before kick-off, Chennai Dosa offers South Indian cooking on Victoria Road. Its 10am Saturday opening works better than nearby evening-only restaurants.

Expect south indian · sit down · weekend brunch

Before you go The Old Town detour takes time, and restaurant queues may affect the plan; reserve if travelling in a group.

Food & drink
Dosa and South Indian cooking; Saturday and Sunday opening from 10am makes this a genuine pre-3pm alternative.
How it works
Sit-down restaurant and takeaway

Greek

Greek Olive

Good for after-match dinner · overnight stay

A proper Greek restaurant west of the station with grills, moussaka and sharing starters. Worth considering for dinner if staying over rather than rushing there before kick-off.

Expect greek · sit down · evening

Before you go The kitchen opens at 5pm on Saturdays, so it is not a pre-match food option for 3pm fixtures.

Food & drink
Moussaka, lamb kleftiko, chicken or halloumi souvlaki and Greek starters.

Matchday concessions

Arkells away concourse food kiosk

0 min walk

Good for late arrivals · no detour

The reliable fallback for anyone going straight to the Arkells away end: hot food and drinks are advertised on the concourse, with no detour from the turnstiles.

Expect stadium food · quick service · cashless

WHERE TO STAY

Where should you stay?

Choose a base for the football and the rest of your visit.

Where to stay

Stay around Fleming Way, Princes Street or the station if you want a straightforward football overnight trip. From here you can walk to the County Ground and back without relying on a late bus or finding matchday parking. Leonardo Hotel Swindon and Travelodge Swindon Central both have central locations within an easy walk of the railway station. Old Town is a better choice if your evening in Swindon matters more than being near the station. It sits farther south, so expect a longer walk or taxi journey to the ground. If you are driving, do not assume hotel guest parking is available without registering: Leonardo requires registration and has a separate parking charge.

Travelodge Swindon Central ↗

For the best all-round football trip, stay around Fleming Way, Princes Street or the wider town centre: the ground, railway station and central food/drink are all walkable. Choose Old Town instead if the post-match evening is a bigger priority than being beside the station; it is the stronger food-and-drink district but sits uphill to the south.

For the evening

Old Town is the clearest evening base. Current local guidance identifies Wood Street, Devizes Road, Victoria Road and High Street as the main independent restaurant, pub and bar streets. It is around a 15-minute uphill walk from the modern town centre, so the trade-off is atmosphere versus station convenience.

For the train

Swindon railway station is west of the ground and directly useful for the central hotels. Leonardo is a short walk from the station; Travelodge states about eight minutes. Old Town accommodation is less rail-convenient and involves the hill.

Bear in mind: Old Town is the better district for an evening of independent pubs, bars and restaurants; getting there means an uphill walk or short taxi/bus.

Booking.com coverage was directly verified, with an 8.6/10 score from 5,441 reviews in the live search results.

Recent Tripadvisor evidence is strong on room cleanliness, comfort and central location.

Ordinary sampled rates were notably competitive for a four-star central hotel.

On-site parking is limited and chargeable, with overflow/public parking nearby.

Some recent reviews describe breakfast crowding at busy times and occasional room/car-park noise.

The market can spike unexpectedly: a £159.30 Tuesday was found and excluded from the normal baseline as an outlier.

Pub-with-rooms format suits a football overnight without needing to travel elsewhere for a drink.

Booking.com coverage was directly verified; live search result showed 8.0/10 from 1,493 reviews.

Recent accommodation reviews praise value, cleanliness, comfortable beds and the Old Town location.

Still walkable to The County Ground for supporters happy with a roughly 15-20 minute walk.

Street/pub-night noise is a genuine issue for some rooms; a rear room is the sensible request for light sleepers.

The pub/restaurant review picture is more mixed than the accommodation review picture, particularly for food consistency.

Limited parking rather than the simpler central rail-first proposition.
