Second Nature Southampton
Queen's Terrace / Oxford Street edge
The best all-round Southampton match-weekend choice in the current evidence. It is close enough to St Mary's to walk, sits beside the Oxford Street/Old Town food-and-drink area, and has markedly stronger recent reputation scores than most of the big city chains.
- About a 15–20 minute walk to St Mary's, so there is no reliance on post-match taxis or buses.
- Immediately beside Oxford Street and the Old Town, giving a strong choice of pubs, restaurants and bars before and after the match.
A straightforward city-centre walk; allow roughly 15–20 minutes depending on the stadium entrance and matchday pedestrian routing.
Usually costs more than Leonardo Hotel Southampton in the sampled dates.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Leonardo Hotel Southampton
Charlotte Place / central parks
The closest hotel to St Mary's that the current evidence supports as a primary MatchdayHotels recommendation. It is a very practical walk to the ground, still central enough for Bedford Place and the main shopping/restaurant areas, and has broad Booking.com availability at noticeably lower sampled prices than the two boutique-style picks.
- Roughly a 13-minute walk to St Mary's, with no need for post-match transport.
- Convenient for Southampton Central as well as the stadium, making it a strong rail-arrival compromise.
A direct walk from Charlotte Place to St Mary's; third-party route checking returned about 13 minutes on foot.
The experience is more functional chain hotel than characterful football weekend.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
The White Star Tavern
Oxford Street
The strongest pick when the evening is part of the trip rather than an afterthought. You are staying above a well-regarded pub and restaurant on Oxford Street, a recognised Southampton food-and-drink strip, while St Mary's remains a realistic walk. The trade-off is small-room inventory, more street/pub noise risk and a clear Saturday premium.
- Directly on Oxford Street among pubs, bars and restaurants.
- The property itself is a pub, restaurant and hotel, so there is a natural pre/post-match option without leaving the building.
A practical walk from Oxford Street to St Mary's; allow extra time for matchday pedestrian routing.
Oxford Street can be noisy late into the night; this is the wrong pick for someone prioritising an early, silent night.

Parking
Driving & road restrictions
For the stadium itself use SO14 5FP, but drive to your chosen car park instead. St Mary’s does not offer general matchday parking, and the club advises against taking private cars into the immediate surrounding streets. Westquay via Harbour Parade (SO15 1ST) and Ocean Way (SO14 3TJ) are legitimate alternatives beyond the tightest stadium perimeter.
Expect Britannia Road and other streets near the stadium to close around 90 minutes before a men’s kick-off, with reopening managed after the crowd has dispersed. The council’s event-day tow-away zone adds no-waiting and no-loading restrictions on signed roads, including sections of the Chapel Road and Marine Parade approaches. Check fixture notices and do not follow a sat-nav through a closed road.
- Stadium postcode
- SO14 5FP, for identification only; route to the booked or chosen off-site car park.
- Westquay navigation
- SO15 1ST, access from Harbour Parade.
- Ocean Way navigation
- SO14 3TJ, MDL Ocean Way multi-storey.
- Closure start
- Stadium vehicle areas and Britannia Road are normally closed 90 minutes before a men’s kick-off.
- Closure end
- Approximate reopening 20 minutes after final whistle in access guide; FAQ says Britannia Road 30 minutes; crowd-control dependent.
- Stadium tow-away roads
- Event-day signed tow-away area and no-waiting/no-loading affected roads shown in Southampton City Council Vehicle Removals Policy figure 1.
Parking & park-and-ride
For weekend home matches, use the authorised Adanac Park & Ride rather than gamble on free residential parking. Bluestar’s PR2 costs £3 return per car for up to five people and needs no advance booking. That gives you a sensible, low-cost choice without joining traffic immediately around St Mary’s.
Drive to Adanac Health & Innovation Centre, SO16 0AZ, and take PR2 to Kingsland Market. It runs from three hours before kick-off until two hours after the match. The car park has a 2.1m height limit and published weekend closing times, so check that your return fits. Follow Chapel Road and Melbourne Street towards away turnstile E.
We could not confirm an unrestricted street within a practical 20–30-minute walk of the away entrance. Northam, Bitterne Manor and Itchen have permit controls, while roads around the stadium can carry event-day tow-away restrictions. Even where a street appears unmarked, do not assume matchday permission without checking its signs.
For weekday or evening fixtures, use a legitimate paid car park. MDL’s Ocean Way multi-storey (SO14 3TJ) is about a 20-minute walk to the stadium, with £6 for up to four hours or £9.50 for four to eight hours. MDL also advertises pre-bookable football parking. Westquay (SO15 1ST) is a larger paid alternative.
Allow at least four to five hours for a full visit and aim to park 75–90 minutes before kick-off. We found no supermarket offering confirmed permission to leave a car for football; a customer-only or three-hour retail limit is not a safe substitute.
After the game, allow for crowds before returning to your car. Supporters report that leaving Ocean Village can be slow, so the Adanac service or a city-centre car park may be more convenient depending on your homeward direction.
- Parking verdict
- Free on-street parking within a reliable 20–30-minute walk of the visiting entrance is not legally verified; use PR2 on suitable weekend dates or off-site paid parking.
- Legal restrictions — Bitterne Manor / Itchen
- Council zones 13 (Bitterne Manor) and 14 (Itchen) are football-event residents’ permit zones; hours depend on event notices and signed bays.
- Legal restrictions — Northam
- Zone 15 is Northam on-street controlled housing parking; check permit-bay signs. The 2006 scheme descriptions included matchday restrictions but do not establish present street-by-street hours.
- Legal restrictions — stadium tow-away zone
- Council policy applies on selected stadium event days, generally events exceeding 10,000 attendees at its discretion; variable entry plates give each event’s times. Vehicles breaching no waiting/no loading restrictions can be removed immediately.
- Legal restrictions — Chapel Road / Marine Parade / Melbourne Street
- Areas of Chapel Road, Marine Parade and nearby Melbourne/Stanford Street are within the council stadium-event restrictions or club closures; not recommended for match parking.
- Matchday availability — Ocean Village
- August 2026 local supporters report mixed experiences: spaces possible but slow outward traffic and possible congestion, depending on direction. Anecdotal only.
- Walk — Adanac PR2 arrival
- PR2 ends at Kingsland Market; continue on foot towards Chapel Road/Melbourne Street and the away entrance. Exact accessible walking time not verified.
- Walk — Ocean Way
- MDL describes roughly 20 minutes on foot to St Mary’s Stadium; allow further time to reach visiting turnstile E.
- Arrive by — Adanac
- Practical editorial planning: reach car park around 75–90 minutes before kick-off, subject to PR2 timetable and queue; PR2 starts three hours before.
- Arrive by — Ocean Way
- Practical editorial planning: park roughly 75–90 minutes before kick-off and leave enough time for an approximately 20-minute stadium walk.
- Paid fallback — Adanac weekend park and ride
- £3 return for up to five in one car, no advance booking; SO16 0AZ, PR2 for weekend/bank holiday home games; 2.1m height.
- Paid fallback — Ocean Way multi-storey
- SO14 3TJ, 776 spaces; £6 for 2–4 hours or £9.50 for 4–8 hours, card only, 24-hour charging; prices marked valid to 31 March 2027.
- Paid fallback — Westquay Multi-Storey
- SO15 1ST via Harbour Parade; 2,484 spaces, 2.0m limit, ANPR smart payment; current operator webpage does not expose a verified matchday tariff.
- Booking recommendation
- No booking for Bluestar PR2. MDL advertises reservable football parking, but confirm price, coverage and terms before payment; Westquay offers ordinary paid access without an evidenced guaranteed reserved bay.
- Total dwell time
- Plan for at least four to five hours including both walks or shuttle transfers, early entry, approximately two hours for the match, and post-match exit; longer if socialising or for a cup tie.
- Adanac car park hours
- Saturday 06:30–21:00; Sunday/bank holidays 08:30–19:00 subject to named holiday exclusions; PR2 service timing itself is fixture dependent.
- After the match
- PR2 operates two hours after full-time and return to Adanac; Ocean Village exit congestion reported by supporters but not quantified.
- Sunday / evening / bank holiday distinction
- PR2 advertised only for weekend and bank-holiday Southampton home fixtures, not ordinary weekday/evening games; stadium event controls still apply when signed.

Matchday advice: For weekend home matches, use the authorised Adanac Park & Ride rather than gamble on free residential parking. Bluestar’s PR2 costs £3 return per car for up to five people and needs no advance booking.
Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Use Southampton Central for St Mary’s. The club puts the ground roughly a mile away, around 20 minutes on foot, although reaching the visiting entrance in the Chapel/Kingsland corner can take longer. If you prefer not to walk, leave on the platform 4 side for the matchday SS1 shuttle from Western Esplanade.
Woolston is geographically close but across the River Itchen, so it is not a better default for most visiting fans. Choose your actual train route first, and check the last service after an evening match. Southampton Central’s platform 4 lift interchange is currently affected by refurbishment; request assistance if you cannot use stairs.
- Recommended rail station
- Southampton Central (SOU), approximately one mile and about 20 minutes on foot to the stadium; allow extra time for visiting turnstile E.
- Rail shuttle pickup
- SS1: platform 4 / Western Esplanade, stop SF in Premium Car Park.
- Alternative railway station
- Woolston (WLS) is across the River Itchen; its B3 step-free category cannot be equated to fully step-free interchange.
- Station access warning 2026
- Southampton Central platform 4 interchange lifts reported unavailable during refurbishment; separate step-free street exits remain.
Station to ground & away entrance
Head for the away turnstiles at the south-west Chapel/Kingsland corner, not the old Northam away end. Southampton’s visiting guide identifies turnstile E and the away ticket office here, with the managed approach and departure via Melbourne Street. Follow the signs and stewards rather than trying to cut around the stadium’s restricted perimeter.
From Southampton Central, walk east through the city centre towards St Mary Street and Chapel Road, then follow the signed Melbourne Street route. The stadium address is Britannia Road, SO14 5FP, but typing that into a sat-nav does not take you to the correct away pedestrian entrance.
- Visiting stand
- Chapel/Kingsland corner; visiting turnstile E (not the pre-2024 Northam entrance).
- Away entrance approach
- Use Melbourne Street for visiting spectator access and departure, subject to fixture stewards.
- Away ticket office
- South side, beside the Chapel/Kingsland corner and South Tunnel.
- Stadium address
- St Mary’s Stadium, Britannia Road, Southampton, SO14 5FP.
- General walking route
- From Southampton Central, use the city centre, St Mary Street/Chapel Road, then Melbourne Street towards the away corner; follow managed approach.
Rail

Coaches
Away coaches
Away coaches and minibuses should arrange the dedicated free space on Melbourne Street before travelling. Southampton FC asks visiting coach organisers to contact PC Lee Grist at lee.grist@hampshire.police.uk rather than simply driving into the stadium streets.
Melbourne Street brings you to the controlled visiting-supporter approach for turnstile E. Confirm your vehicle’s arrival instructions and the collection time with the organiser, as the surrounding roads have event-day closures and the exact stewarded pick-up arrangement may change by fixture.
- Away coach parking
- Free for official coaches, private supporters’ coaches and minibuses on Melbourne Street, by arrangement.
- Coach booking contact
- PC Lee Grist, lee.grist@hampshire.police.uk.
- Coach passenger approach
- Melbourne Street approach to south-west Chapel/Kingsland visiting entrance.
Buses
Buses & local travel
From Southampton Central, take Mayflower’s SS1 shuttle at stop SF on Western Esplanade, outside the platform 4 exit. It runs to Britannia Road on Southampton home matchdays, with an adult return advertised at £3.50. From Town Quay and the Red Jet terminal, use SS2 instead and check the match-specific return stop.
If you are driving for a weekend fixture, Bluestar’s PR2 from Adanac Park (SO16 0AZ) is often the simpler choice. It serves Kingsland Market on football matchdays and costs £3 return per car for up to five people, without advance booking. Ordinary Bluestar routes 3 and 18 serve the Northam corridor, while the 7 serves City College; check diversions before travelling.
- SS1 shuttle
- Southampton Central stop SF at Western Esplanade to Britannia Road; adult return £3.50; operator posts fixture-specific times and return window.
- SS2 shuttle
- Town Quay/Red Jet and Platform Tavern to stadium; usual return on Chapel Road, but match-specific changes are published.
- Weekend park and ride
- Bluestar PR2: Adanac Health & Innovation Centre SO16 0AZ to Kingsland Market; three hours before kick-off and two after.
- Park and ride fare
- £3 per car, return travel for up to five people; card/cash/app, no booking, no concessionary pass validity.
- Bus alternatives
- Bluestar 3/18 via Northam; Bluestar 7 via Southampton College/City College.
- Current diversion caveat
- Bluestar notices in October 2026 include temporary inbound diversions on services via Bitterne Road; check live service before departure.
Accessibility
Accessible journeys
If you need accessible away parking, contact your own club before matchday. Southampton allocates four on-site accessible spaces to visiting supporters, arranged through the visiting club rather than general sale. The stadium parking surface is flat and tarmacked, but road closures mean booked vehicles must arrive early.
For drop-off, Southampton directs drivers to the main reception area near the Ted Bates statue via Chapel Road and Granville Street; this is not a place to leave the car. Fourteen marked Blue Badge bays on Rochester Street are first come, first served. The away ticket office has step-free access, while Southampton Central’s platform 4 lift interchange currently has an accessibility warning. Contact accessibility@saintsfc.co.uk or 02380 711 980 for individual arrangements.
- Accessible away parking
- Four matchday spaces allocated to visiting club; enquire through your own club.
- Nearby blue badge bays
- 14 designated marked Blue Badge spaces along Rochester Street, first come, first served.
- Drop off
- Near main reception/Ted Bates statue, via Chapel Road and Granville Street, drop-off only; matchday road closures may affect approach.
- Away accessible entry
- Accessible door beside the Chapel/Kingsland away turnstiles; check requirements with Southampton access team.
- Away concourse accessible toilets
- Three step-free accessible toilets reported by visiting Tottenham in December 2024; check current provision when arranging assistance.
- Accessibility contact
- accessibility@saintsfc.co.uk, 02380 711 980.
- Southampton Central lift warning
- Platform 4 lift connection to other platforms is reported unavailable in October 2026 despite separate station entrances providing step-free street access.
After the match
After the match
If you come by train, allow time to leave the Chapel/Kingsland away end via Melbourne Street before heading back to Southampton Central. Mayflower’s SS1 picks up on Britannia Road, and its football page publishes return departures for each fixture. Do not plan around an assumed last shuttle or a tight train connection.
For drivers, the PR2 return to Adanac runs for two hours after the match on advertised weekend home dates. Stadium-area road closures generally remain until the crowd clears, while local accounts describe queues leaving Ocean Village. A city-centre car park or Adanac may give a more predictable plan than trying to collect passengers beside the stadium.
- Visiting fan exit
- Melbourne Street designated visiting route.
- SS1 return
- Britannia Road; use fixture-specific Mayflower timetable, current service advertises shuttles after full time.
- SS2 return
- Usually Chapel Road; individual match page may change to Britannia Road.
- PR2 return period
- Runs two hours after full time on eligible weekend/bank-holiday home fixtures, subject to site closing time.
- Road reopening
- Club sources indicate road/car-park reopening around 20–30 minutes after full time, dependent on police and crowd movement.
- Traffic experience
- Local supporters reported Ocean Village exit congestion in August 2026; treat as anecdote, not an exact wait prediction.
Where to stay
Stay in central Southampton around Southampton Central or the main shopping streets if you want the simplest all-round football trip. You can walk to the stadium and have the option of the SS1 shuttle, without needing a car once you arrive. This also makes a late arrival or an early onward train easier to organise.
Ocean Village is an alternative if you prefer the marina area and are happy with a walk to the away end. Staying close to St Mary’s is not essential for a daytime fixture; consider a hotel mainly when an evening kick-off leaves too little time for your last train home.
- Recommended stay base
- City centre near Southampton Central / central shopping area for rail, restaurants and matchday shuttle access.
- Alternative base
- Ocean Village, about 20 minutes on foot to the stadium according to MDL; reaching away entrance may take longer.
- Overnight recommendation
- Conditional: consider it for late kick-offs, uncertain return train, or leisure visit; not required for most daytime matches.

Southampton is a city-centre-first away day. The visiting section is now in the Chapel/Kingsland corner, while Southampton Central is roughly a 20–30-minute walk; the club’s shuttle leaves from the Platform 4/Western Esplanade side. Since Yates closed at the end of August 2026, Papillon opposite the Mayflower is the new designated away venue and the obvious rail-arrivals meeting point. If you want to drink near St Mary’s, Chapel Arms is the standout: CAMRA explicitly says home and away fans of all ages are welcome. Scholars Arms, Slug & Lettuce, Guide Dog and Browns all have useful visiting-fan evidence, but none publishes a blanket colours rule and Scholars has fixture-specific conflicting reports. Food is better handled before the ground: Piecaramba and Overdraft suit Bedford Place; Platform Tavern works with the Town Quay shuttle. Inside, the away side has Pukka pies and the stadium’s core hot-food range. For overnighters, central/Westquay is easiest for rail; Ocean Village suits waterfront food. Portsmouth derby rules override all of this.

Northam Fan Zone
The Northam Fan Zone is an established club-run supporter space at St Mary's, used for home-match build-up and Saints away-game screenings. Current club material confirms food and drink and explicitly promotes family use; Southampton supporters also describe it as a lively pre-match option with a big screen and live music. Its positioning and branding are strongly Saints-focused, and away-ticket-holder access at men's home fixtures was not clearly verified.
Piecaramba!
A proper food-first stop in Bedford Place. Piecaramba specialises in pie and mash, with meat and plant-based choices, and recent supporters have used it before football. It suits an early arrival better than a last-minute dash to St Mary’s.
Overdraft Bedford Place
A strong independent food-and-beer choice rather than an away-pub claim. Overdraft’s Bedford Place branch serves tacos and craft beer, and current Saints supporters describe it as a lively post-match option used by football crowds.
Platform Tavern
The practical waterfront food stop. Southampton’s Town Quay matchday shuttle picks up beside the Platform Tavern, while the current menu covers fish and chips, pies, burgers, pizza and fresh seafood.
