FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW CHELTENHAM TOWN TO NEWPORT COUNTY

This fixture is still months away, on 23 January. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Cheltenham Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Recent results give Cheltenham Town six points from a possible fifteen, with two wins and three defeats in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, Newport County have taken nine points from a possible fifteen: two wins and three draws. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Cheltenham Town are 5th in League Two after 12 league games, with 18 points. Their league position and recent results are the clearest guide to the task here.

Newport County are 12th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points.

The destination is Rodney Parade in Newport. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

For Cheltenham Town supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 22 October.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Rodney Parade

The ground

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

The modern East/Bisley side faces an older stand and terraces. Open ends sit farther from the football pitch because the enclosure was laid out for rugby. Close, noisy sides and more distant ends give the shared ground an uneven, sometimes improvised feel.

Recorded capacity
9,097

Views from the away section

Covered side-stand away seats are generally good; extra/overflow away accommodation can be uncovered and more exposed.

Why the ground matters

Rodney Parade has become the home of County's strongest modern memories: escape in 2017, meetings with Leeds, Spurs and Leicester, and play-off nights. Its older rugby history places County within a wider Newport sporting tradition.

Stand features

The newer covered all-seater side; part of it is commonly used for away supporters. The club's current family guide now refers to the East Stand, formerly Bisley.

An older covered stand with terracing in front and supporting pillars, visually carrying much more of the old rugby-ground feel.

The end accommodation is more exposed and sits noticeably back from the football goal line, one of the clearest clues that the ground was not designed first for football.

Installed in 2017 to cope with heavy shared use after drainage problems.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Rodney Parade

Atmosphere & acoustics

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

Close mixed structures make it feel more traditional than a purpose-built bowl.

Come On The County

A 1973 recording with enough staying power that 1912 Exiles still uses the original as its podcast theme in 2026.

Hi-Ho Newport County

The club's current walkout song, played immediately after the pre-kick-off claxon.

Pre-kick-off claxon

Sounds about five minutes before kick-off to signal the players are in the tunnel, then gives way to 'Hi-Ho Newport County'.

Matchday Marquee

A current pre-match hub at Rodney Parade used for music, community activities, player appearances and mascot interaction. This is a current operational feature, not a timeless tradition.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Rodney Parade

Food & drink

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

Rodney Parade is unusually convenient for an away day: Newport station, the High Street and the city-centre food-and-drink cluster are roughly a 10–15 minute walk from the ground, with the route crossing the River Usk before visiting supporters enter via Gate 6 on Corporation Road. Train arrivals are best meeting around Cambrian Road, High Street or Newport Market, where there is far more choice than immediately outside the away turnstiles.

Food and drink around the ground

The John Wallace Linton, Godfrey Morgan, Ye Olde Murenger, Le Pub and Windsor Castle all have recurring away-fan evidence, while the Excelsior remains a long-standing near-ground lead whose current opening arrangements still need checking. Newport Market is the strongest food stop: it sits naturally on the station-to-ground route and now has several independent traders, with Ceylon M8's koththu a particularly useful supporter-backed recommendation.

Inside Rodney Parade the away section has its own bar and burger-van/concourse food. For an overnight stay, the station/Bridge Street/Upper Dock Street city-centre area is the practical base because both rail and the stadium remain walkable.

The John Wallace Linton

One of the most repeatedly recommended Newport pubs for visiting supporters and the easiest serious drinking option for rail arrivals. Its position by the station makes it a sensible meeting point before the short walk across town.

Accessibility

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

Arrange accessible parking through your own club before travelling. Newport County allocates five visiting-supporter spaces at Maindee Primary School car park; these are not a public drive-up option. For other access arrangements or a one-off request, contact the club’s supporter liaison team ahead of the match. Newport railway station has step-free routes and lifts, but check for any lift faults on the day.

Accessible journeys

The club recommends allowing about 30 minutes for its tested accessible pedestrian route to the away end, rather than relying on the shorter general stadium walk. Accessible toilets are in the Bisley Stand, and visiting wheelchair positions are provided separately from ordinary away seating.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Rodney Parade

Parking

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

You do not normally need to book parking for Rodney Parade, provided you use a public city-centre car park and arrive in good time. Free street parking is possible in principle, but there is no named nearby stretch we can safely recommend for a whole match. Residential permits, waiting limits and restrictions around Corporation Road make searching close to kick-off a poor plan. **Kingsway multi-storey** is the simplest first choice.

Parking & park-and-ride

It is open from 6am until midnight, uses number-plate recognition and is recommended by Newport County. Walk across the Millennium footbridge over the River Usk, then continue to the away entrance at Gate 6 on Corporation Road. Allow extra time beyond the short walk to the stadium’s main side. **Friars Walk** is a straightforward alternative if Kingsway is full.

Its operator publishes £5.10 for three to four hours or £6.70 for four to ten hours, with a 2.1-metre height restriction. **Maindee car park**, on Chepstow Road, is another council-listed public option on the ground’s side of the river, but check its current tariff before relying on a quoted price. For free parking, the council identifies bays at Hollybush Avenue in Malpas, but they are too far from Rodney Parade to recommend as a simple walk.

Reports of parking around Rugby Road do not establish which bays are legally unrestricted. Signed two-hour bays on parts of Hereford Street and Exeter Street are not suitable for a full afternoon match. Aim to park around 60–90 minutes before kick-off and allow at least four hours for your total visit, including both walks, football and queues. Weekend and evening restrictions differ, so read signs wherever you park.

Do not leave your car in ASDA, Tesco or other customer parking for football without express permission.

Parking verdict
Book a public space only if you want additional certainty; normal first choice is Kingsway or Friars Walk pay-and-display. No legally verified, nearby full-match free street recommendation.
Free option — Hollybush Avenue, Malpas
Council identifies 20 free off-street bays at Hollybush Avenue (Unionist Club), but this is not a practical walking option for most visiting supporters
Free option — Rugby Road
Unverified: individual November 2024 fan says they have parked in residential roads around Rugby Road; permission, street section and current controls not established
Legal restrictions — Corporation Road
Newport 2026 enacted notice creates no-waiting-at-any-time controls on lengths of Corporation Road, EV-only bays and loading restrictions on some sections; no free street section established

Tesco Esso Express NP19 9EZ states supermarket parking time limits depend on the site and signs; no verified match permission or site-specific full-visit maximum stay
Total dwell time
Allow at least four hours for ordinary match: roughly 60 minutes early arrival, 105–115 minutes match/half-time/stoppages, two walks and time to exit. Cup extra time or longer pre-match plans need more.
After the match
Cross River Usk to return to Kingsway or Friars Walk; departures may coincide with pedestrian flows. No quantified exit delay or guaranteed quick route.
Park-and-ride
No verified match-specific park-and-ride service found; ordinary city-centre car parks and walking are supported alternative

Driving & road restrictions

For ordinary supporters, set your sat-nav for Kingsway multi-storey car park in Newport city centre rather than the stadium. Its approach avoids searching the residential roads around Rodney Parade, and you can reach the ground on foot across the River Usk. If you are going to a pre-arranged stadium space or the away coach facility, the club directs drivers from the north and east off the M4 at junction 24 towards the B4237 and Corporation Road.

From the west, its published route uses junction 26 towards the city. Do not assume you can drive onto Grafton Road on a busy matchday: temporary closures have been used for major fixtures, and any new restrictions must be checked closer to kick-off.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Rodney Parade

Worth knowing

Cheltenham Town at Newport County

The Exiles name remembers home games played in England, far from Newport. At Rodney Parade, County has made recent football memories in a much older rugby ground. The layout and familiar supporter language both tell part of that journey.

Matchday features

Multi-sport traditional layout. Section-dependent cover. Dedicated away accessible parking. Potential corner-view restriction

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

A football pitch inside a visibly rugby-shaped venue

The end stands are set back, the side stands are much stronger viewing positions and the architecture is inconsistent in a way a purpose-built football bowl is not.

Amber is everywhere in the club's language

The support is routinely called the Amber Army; the colour reaches back into the club's founding story.

The walkout has a specific cue

A claxon sounds shortly before the teams emerge, then 'Hi-Ho Newport County' plays.

The modern cup story belongs to this ground

Supporter interpretation

Leeds, Tottenham and Leicester are not abstract honours-board names: all are tied to packed or emotionally intense Rodney Parade nights.

The ground does not form a neat football bowl

The different stand ages, terraces, open ends and long rugby-shaped enclosure are the point; its character comes partly from not looking like a standard modern EFL stadium.

Cup capacity was stretched physically

Temporary stands helped produce a 9,836 County record crowd for Tottenham in 2018.

It is secure for now, not 'County-owned'

The 2025 10-year lease brought welcome stability, but the football club remains a tenant at a shared ground.

A detail worth noticing

Rodney Parade predates Newport County by decades and was created as a multi-sport venue.

The venue hosted the first floodlit rugby match in Wales.

Newport RFC's 3-0 win over New Zealand remains part of the site's mythology and wider city sporting memory.

The 2017 final-day escape and major cup ties mean football has now added its own layer to an already old venue.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible parking through your own club before travelling. Newport County allocates five visiting-supporter spaces at Maindee Primary School car park; these are not a public drive-up option. For other access arrangements or a one-off request, contact the club’s supporter liaison team ahead of the match.

Newport railway station has step-free routes and lifts, but check for any lift faults on the day. The club recommends allowing about 30 minutes for its tested accessible pedestrian route to the away end, rather than relying on the shorter general stadium walk. Accessible toilets are in the Bisley Stand, and visiting wheelchair positions are provided separately from ordinary away seating.

Accessible away parking

After the match

After the match

If you parked at Kingsway or Friars Walk, return across the Millennium footbridge and pay attention to the pedestrian route back towards the car parks. You can leave the stadium area without having to recover a car from a narrow residential road, but traffic and pedestrian delays still depend on the crowd.

For rail travel, head back towards Newport station through Clarence Place and the Queensway approach. Leave a sensible margin before a booked train, especially after an evening game. Major matches have previously involved closures on Rodney Road and Grafton Road, but those historic arrangements should not be treated as permanent football restrictions.

Best car return
Kingsway/Friars Walk: return across Millennium River Usk footbridge to city centre; avoids retrieving car beside stadium
Rail return
Newport station via Clarence Place pedestrian routes and Queensway; check train times and last service
Road closure caveat
Grafton Road and Rodney Road had temporary closures for January 2024 Manchester United tie; not evidenced as recurring for all fixtures
Evening car park closure
Kingsway operates to midnight; allow for return and exit; Friars operator published tariff to midnight, later opening not independently verified

Where to stay

Stay in Newport city centre, near the railway station, Friars Walk or the river, if you are making a weekend of the match. You can walk to Rodney Parade across the River Usk and return to the same area for trains, food and an evening out, without needing a taxi to the ground.

There is little football-travel advantage in booking beside the eastern stadium approaches around Corporation Road. Choose the station side if an early train home matters. For a one-day afternoon visit, Newport is compact enough that you may not need a hotel at all; compare live prices and travel times before booking.

Recommended stay area
Newport city centre: railway station/Friars Walk/river side provides walkable station and ground access
Stadium-side trade-off
Rodney Parade is across the river; staying by Corporation Road is unnecessary for most football visitors
Rail-oriented stay
Newport station/Queensway side for morning departure; match accessible on foot

Train arrivals are best meeting around Cambrian Road, High Street or Newport Market, where there is far more choice than immediately outside the away turnstiles.

Riverside Sports Bar & Kitchen

BEST FORtelevised sport · food close to the ground · short final walk
MATCHDAY INTELA credible near-ground lead rather than a proven away pub. CAMRA specifically describes it as a good pre-match venue for Rodney Parade and it has food and sports TV, but no current away-fan or colours policy was found.
WORTH KNOWINGUse only after checking fixture-day admission if travelling in colours; the evidence proves it is a pre-match venue, not that every away following is admitted.
PUB / BAR

The John Wallace Linton

Units 10-12, The Cambrian Centre, Cambrian Road, Newport, NP20 4AD
12 min walkAway access: checkFood available
BEST FORtrain arrivals · groups · breakfast or pub meal · early pint
MATCHDAY INTELOne of the most repeatedly recommended Newport pubs for visiting supporters and the easiest serious drinking option for rail arrivals. Its position by the station makes it a sensible meeting point before the short walk across town.
WORTH KNOWINGAway admission is repeatedly reported, but no current venue-level policy on visiting colours was found; high-profile fixtures can still change door policy.
PUB / BAR

The Godfrey Morgan

158 Chepstow Road, Newport, NP19 8EG
10 min walkAway access: checkFood available
BEST FORsupporters already on the ground side of the river · groups · food and drink together
MATCHDAY INTELThe strongest near-ground pub recommendation. Visiting-club guides repeatedly send away supporters here, and it is far enough from the turnstiles to offer more space and food choice than the immediate stadium streets.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent guides warn that Newport pub colour and child policies vary by venue; no Godfrey Morgan-specific away-colours rule was published.
PUB / BAR

Le Pub

14 High Street, Newport, NP20 1FW
12 min walkAway access: checkFood available
BEST FORindependent beer · small groups · city-centre pre-match
MATCHDAY INTELA useful independent alternative to the big pub chains. Exeter's away guide explicitly lists Le Pub, and its current venue site confirms it remains active on High Street with long weekend opening.
WORTH KNOWINGIt is a live-music venue as well as a pub, so event days can alter the atmosphere and capacity; no football-colours policy is published.
PUB / BAR

Windsor Castle

19 Upper Dock Street, Newport, NP20 1DH
12 min walkAway access: checkFood available
BEST FORtrain arrivals · pub meal · city-centre meeting
MATCHDAY INTELA practical city-centre pub that appears in very recent Grimsby guidance for Newport. It is less football-specific than the Godfrey Morgan but useful for supporters who want to eat before walking over to Rodney Parade.
WORTH KNOWINGAway-fan recommendation is current, but there is no published venue-specific rule on colours or fixture-by-fixture admission.
PUB / BAR

Ye Olde Murenger House

52-53 High Street, Newport, NP20 1GA
10 min walkAway access: checkFood available
BEST FORrail arrivals · traditional pub · real ale · supporters wanting somewhere with character
MATCHDAY INTELA more characterful city-centre choice than a chain pub. Recent away guides continue to list the Murenger, and supporter discussion places it roughly ten minutes from the ground, though a spicy fixture may change how comfortable colours feel.
WORTH KNOWINGA 2024 supporter thread specifically cautioned that a 'spicy' fixture could change the feel; no current published colours policy was found.
PUB / BAR

Excelsior Club

205-209 Corporation Road, Newport, NP19 0EB
5 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORsupporters wanting the closest recurring away-fan pub lead · coach arrivals
MATCHDAY INTELThe long-standing near-ground away-fan lead. Multiple recent away guides still list the Excelsior, and older first-hand club information explicitly welcomed visiting supporters, but a current independent opening page could not be verified.
WORTH KNOWINGTreat this as check-before-travel: away access is well established in guides, but current opening hours, membership rules and fixture-specific door policy were not independently confirmed.
PUB / BAR

The Cellar Door

5 Clytha Park Road, Newport, NP20 4NZ
15 min walkAway access: checkLimited food
BEST FORreal cider · local ale · post-match · evening fixtures
MATCHDAY INTELA small, distinctive station-side option for supporters who value local ale and cider over football-bar atmosphere. It appears in the current Football Ground Guide but its Saturday opening time makes it poor for a standard 3pm kick-off.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent CAMRA hours show 16:00 Saturday opening, so it is normally a post-match choice for 3pm games rather than a pre-match base.
