FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW SWINDON TOWN TO GRIMSBY TOWN

This fixture is still months away, on 27 February. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Swindon Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Swindon Town are 15th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points. Set that against the summer expectation: promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Swindon Town come into the current picture with one win, two draws and two defeats across their last five league games, worth five points from a possible fifteen. Grimsby Town's last five recorded league games brought one draw and four defeats: one points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Grimsby Town are 17th in League Two after 12 league games, with 14 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

The destination is Blundell Park in Cleethorpes. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters, central Cleethorpes is the best balance: close enough to walk to Blundell Park, close to Cleethorpes station, and much better for food and drinks after the match. Grimsby town centre is the alternative for people who value a larger chain hotel and very easy rail access over being in the main seaside/evening area. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

An away day is a chance to follow Swindon Town somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 22 October.

The Burlington Hotel

The Burlington Hotel

Central Cleethorpes / Albert Road / seafront

A small, well-reviewed hotel just off Cleethorpes' central promenade. It works unusually well for this particular football trip because it combines a credible walk to Blundell Park with the strongest evening location, easy access to Cleethorpes station and much better current reputation evidence than the nearer low-cost options.

  • Current reputation evidence is strong across both Tripadvisor and Booking.com, particularly for cleanliness, staff, comfort and location.
  • Albert Road is in the part of Cleethorpes where an overnight supporter is most likely to want to be after the match: close to the promenade, Sea View Street, bars and restaurants.
The match journey

Approximate practical walking estimate, not a turn-by-turn route. The straight-line distance is about 1.07 miles; the official club guide says Blundell Park is around a 20-minute walk from Cleethorpes station, and Burlington is close to the central station/seafront area.

The trade-off

It is not next to the stadium; allow roughly 25 minutes on foot depending on route and pace, or use a short taxi.

WHY STAY HERE?

The Burlington Hotel

Central Cleethorpes / Albert Road / seafront

Our view

A small, well-reviewed hotel just off Cleethorpes' central promenade. It works unusually well for this particular football trip because it combines a credible walk to Blundell Park with the strongest evening location, easy access to Cleethorpes station and much better current reputation evidence than the nearer low-cost options.

Why it suits this trip

  • Current reputation evidence is strong across both Tripadvisor and Booking.com, particularly for cleanliness, staff, comfort and location.
  • Albert Road is in the part of Cleethorpes where an overnight supporter is most likely to want to be after the match: close to the promenade, Sea View Street, bars and restaurants.
  • Cleethorpes station is nearby, while the club's own guidance puts the stadium around a 20-minute walk from the station area.
  • Booking.com coverage was repeatedly verified across the sampled dates.
  • The six-date normal-price sample was unusually stable and good value for the local market.

Getting to the ground

Approximate practical walking estimate, not a turn-by-turn route. The straight-line distance is about 1.07 miles; the official club guide says Blundell Park is around a 20-minute walk from Cleethorpes station, and Burlington is close to the central station/seafront area.

Pubs and the evening

One of the hotel's main advantages. Central Cleethorpes has the most useful concentration of independent restaurants, pubs and bars for an overnight supporter.

Arriving by train

Convenient for Cleethorpes station; recent guest reviews specifically mention easy access from the station. The ground is then walkable from this same central area.

The trade-offs

  • It is not next to the stadium; allow roughly 25 minutes on foot depending on route and pace, or use a short taxi.
  • The hotel does not have a conventional residents' bar or full restaurant, although that matters less here because the central Cleethorpes food-and-drink cluster is on the doorstep.
  • On-site parking is limited; recent guest evidence mentions tight/limited spaces.
  • Some room categories are small and the property uses a self-check-in style that will not suit everyone.

Research price context

Current sample: about £75 midweek and roughly £75-£85 on non-home-match weekend nights. The sampled weekend premium was small rather than dramatic.

Read our hotel research above, then compare live availability. Research price context is not a current room quote.

What to expect at Grimsby Town

All the key information for Swindon Town supporters heading to Blundell Park — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Blundell Park

The ground

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

Low, enclosed by ordinary streets, close to the Humber and sea air, visibly assembled in different eras rather than master-planned. The old timber Main Stand, pillars, steep rooflines and one much larger side stand make it feel like a ground that grew with the club's circumstances.

Recorded capacity
9,546

Views from the away section

Pillars can obstruct sightlines and legroom can feel cosy/tight.

Why the ground matters

Blundell Park is not loved because it is comfortable or architecturally coherent. It matters because so many different versions of Grimsby Town have happened on the same cramped site since 1899: pre-war top-flight football, post-war revival, Buckley football, Wembley send-offs, non-League frustration and modern cup shocks. Failed new-stadium schemes have increased the emotional load carried by a ground that also has obvious practical limitations.

Main Stand

Central structure dates from 1901 and was financed by 150 subscriptions of £10. The club currently describes it as the oldest stand in the Football League.

Pontoon Stand

Traditional home end. The early-1960s replacement was driven by Supporters Club funding, and supporters were restored here in 1987 after an unpopular two-year move.

Osmond Stand

Built in 1939 and normally used for away supporters. It is part of the old-ground experience, including pillars and sightlines that can be compromised depending on the seat.

Findus-linked side stand

When the old Barrett Stand was condemned, Findus helped make the 1981-82 replacement possible. That sponsorship is unusually apt local history for a club from a town defined by fish processing.

Floodlights

Replacement pylons in 1960 were bought from Wolves with Supporters Club money; modern LED replacements arrived in 2019.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Blundell Park

Atmosphere & acoustics

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

Low roofs and compact stands help create good noise.

From the supporters

Supporter observation

Blundell Park's compact layout comes into its own on a big night. When the ground is full and Grimsby have something major to celebrate, the noise and emotion can feel far bigger than the stadium's size would suggest.

We Only Sing When We're Fishing

Supporter interpretation

Self-deprecating fishing chant that turns an outsider stereotype into an insider joke.

Up the Mariners

Centenary-era club song from 1978 that remains part of the recognisable musical identity.

Harry Haddock at big games

Inflatable fish appear especially in cup ties and major away days; the 2023 FA Cup run refreshed the custom for a new generation.

Pontoon as the home end

The Pontoon's identity survived even an unpopular 1980s attempt to shift home supporters to the Osmond.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Blundell Park

Food & drink

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

Rail travellers should aim for Cleethorpes rather than Grimsby Town: the club puts Blundell Park around 20 minutes on foot from Cleethorpes station, with New Clee closer but much more lightly served. No.1 and No.2 Refreshment Rooms are the easiest station meet-ups; Swashbuckle has the strongest external away-pub case, while the Rutland Arms has fresh September 2026 evidence of home and away supporters mixing about ten minutes from the ground.

Food and drink around the ground

Do not rely on the Blundell Park Hotel: the club’s away guide calls it home-only. Inside, Scotties is the away bar when the allocation gives access. Food is a proper part of the trip: GR8 White is close to the ground but its current Saturday hours conflict across listings; Steels and Ocean are dependable sit-down chippy choices in central Cleethorpes, with Papa’s on the pier better for larger groups.

For an overnight stay, Cleethorpes seafront/station is the practical base. Check the fixture: away fans can be moved from the Osmond Stand, and the Fan Zone is currently closed.

Scotties Bar

The simplest drink once you are through the away turnstiles. Grimsby’s current guide identifies Scotties as the indoor visiting-supporters bar, with draught and bottled beer and additional bars depending on allocation.

No.2 Refreshment Room

The easiest early-arrival pint: No.2 is at Cleethorpes station and opens from 8am every day. It is small and beer-led rather than football-designated, so it suits a few supporters meeting off the train more than a large away following.

Accessibility

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

Contact Grimsby Town’s ticket office before travelling if you need an accessible place in the away allocation or help reaching the Osmond Stand. The club publishes wheelchair accommodation, accessible toilets and limited Blue Badge street bays, but these are not the same as a guaranteed stadium car-park booking. Do not assume a particular accessible bay will be free on arrival.

Accessible journeys

For the journey from Cleethorpes station, prefer the town route through Prince’s Road and Grimsby Road instead of the Fuller Street bridge promenade shortcut, which a visiting guide identifies as unsuitable for wheelchair access. National Rail publishes step-free access at Cleethorpes; arrange any train boarding assistance separately. The number of away wheelchair places varies between guides, so confirm your exact allocation with the club.

Rail, Underground & tram

New Clee is closer on the map and National Rail’s local guide shows a walk towards the ground, but it is an unstaffed station with fewer facilities. Only choose it if a suitable train actually stops there. Grimsby Town station is further away and is better treated as a connection or bus starting point rather than the final walking destination.

Head for the Osmond Stand at the Harrington Street end of Blundell Park, not the main club entrance. For visiting supporters, the Harrington 2 turnstiles are the clearest published approach, although your match ticket and stewards take priority if segregation changes. From Cleethorpes station, follow the town-centre route along Prince’s Road and Grimsby Road, then turn towards Manchester Street and Harrington Street.

A promenade route via Fuller Street bridge is another option, but an established away guide warns that it is not wheelchair accessible. Allow a little extra time beyond the general station-to-stadium walk to reach your gate.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Blundell Park

Parking

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

Free street parking is possible near Blundell Park, but arrive early and have a paid backup. Grimsby Town advises using local streets where parking is permitted, while warning that spaces are extremely limited. Do not expect to find a bay beside the away turnstiles shortly before kick-off. Blundell Avenue and Tiverton Street appear in independent away-parking guides as free possibilities.

Parking & park-and-ride

However, I could not confirm any precise unrestricted section of either road for a full matchday visit. Harrington Street and Tiverton Street have formal matchday coach and authorised-vehicle restrictions, while nearby Imperial Avenue and Constitutional Avenue also have waiting restrictions. Check every sign and bay rather than relying on a postcode.

If you want certainty over where to park, use a proper paid car park or reserve an authorised private driveway in advance. Grant Street car park in Cleethorpes is a council-run option, listed at £6 for over four hours, with daytime charges seven days a week. St Peter’s Avenue is another published £6 longer-stay choice. Both involve a longer walk back towards the Harrington Street away entrance.

Allow around four to five hours for parking, walking, getting into the ground, the match and leaving afterwards. For a typical 3pm kick-off, aim to be parked roughly 90 minutes early if trying local streets, with enough time to switch to your chosen car park. Bigger away followings and cup ties can make local supply tighter. Do not use supermarket parking as a free football space.

The Tesco Express on Grimsby Road has a documented 30-minute free period, and its signage governs any paid extension. A separately purchased parking-operator booking is only suitable if its terms expressly allow a full match visit. For late games and bank holidays, recheck charges and any site-specific closing rules.

Parking verdict
Free on-street parking is possible with an identified paid backup; do not rely on an unspecified unrestricted residential bay.
Free option — Blundell Avenue
Named by independent away guide as a free street option; exact permitted kerbside section and matchday hours not legally confirmed.
Free option — Tiverton Street
Named by independent away guide but subject to separate matchday coach/authorised-vehicle controls; do not recommend a particular space.
Free option — other residential streets
Club says on-street parking may be used where legal; no verified named unrestricted section for a complete match visit.

Arrive by — normal Saturday match
Practical suggestion: aim to be parked around 90 minutes before kick-off when attempting street parking; not a guaranteed availability threshold.

Paid fallback — reservable private space

Booking recommendation
Not essential for drivers happy to arrive early and use legal street parking with paid fallback; reserve an authorised private space for more certainty.

AccessAble survey lists 30 minutes free parking at Tesco Grimsby Road Express; payment signage applies. Not general free football parking.
Supermarket permission/time limit — Tesco policy
Tesco says site-specific maximum stays and enforcement are displayed on car park signs; football-use permission not verified.
Total dwell time
Allow about four to five hours for both walks, early arrival, match, stoppages and exit; a two- or three-hour customer parking allowance is inadequate.
After the match
Use planned route back to car park; do not expect quick vehicle departure from tight streets around the away end.
Parking all-day weekend exceptions
Council car park tariffs are listed for all seven days, 8am–6pm; confirm any additional entry/exit signs for evenings/bank holidays.

Driving & road restrictions

Set your sat-nav for Blundell Park, Cleethorpes DN35 7PY. The usual approach is along the M180 as it becomes the A180, then Grimsby Road by the stadium. Expect the roads around Harrington Street and Tiverton Street to be tightly managed on matchdays.

North East Lincolnshire Council also records separate waiting and loading restrictions on Constitutional Avenue and Imperial Avenue. Follow the on-street signs and any fixture traffic instructions; a previously reported temporary closure is not evidence that the road remains closed today.

Comfort & weather

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

Older facilities and tight seating are part of the traditional experience.

Shelter and exposure

Blundell Park delivers a strong traditional-ground feel and can produce a lively atmosphere, but visiting-fan feedback repeatedly describes the away facilities as basic, with the old Osmond Stand experience noticeably less polished than newer grounds.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Blundell Park

Worth knowing

Swindon Town at Grimsby Town

The interest for a visiting supporter is the collision between an old lower-league ground and a club with memories far bigger than its present tier. You are not visiting a preserved museum: Blundell Park has awkward views and ageing infrastructure, but the same quirks are why it still feels specific to Grimsby Town.

Matchday features

Pillar-rich classic stands. Audio/headset support. Coastal/Cleethorpes context

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

Around the ground

Club folklore

You are in Cleethorpes, not Grimsby proper — a running joke but also a useful clue to the two-town identity.

Away support is normally in the 1939 Osmond Stand, where pillars and the roof can affect the view.

The Main Stand looks and feels genuinely old because part of it is: the central section dates from 1901.

Supporter interpretation

Fish references are not a marketing theme applied for visitors. They recur in the nickname, songs, inflatable mascot tradition and local industrial history.

A detail worth noticing

The old wooden Main Stand is the detail to look at rather than walk past; its scale explains how different eras of English football coexist at the ground.

Club folklore

The ground is in Cleethorpes despite the club name — a small fact that opens up the wider Grimsby-Cleethorpes identity.

The Family Fanzone mural is a modern heritage layer, using art to put supporter memories back onto the stadium walls.

Supporter interpretation

The uneven rooflines and supporting pillars are not set dressing. They are evidence of a stadium repeatedly altered rather than replaced.

Two stands came across from Abbey Park when the club moved in 1899, so the first Blundell Park literally incorporated pieces of the previous home.

The record Blundell Park crowd is 31,651 for the 1937 FA Cup tie with Wolves.

Supporter interpretation

Great Coates and Peaks Parkway relocation plans repeatedly stalled, making 'leaving Blundell Park' a recurring future that never quite arrived.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Cleethorpes station for the easiest rail arrival. It is about a 20-minute walk from Blundell Park and puts you in the town centre for food or a drink before heading to the away turnstiles. Trains from further afield commonly reach Cleethorpes via Grimsby or Doncaster, so check your connection and return journey before travelling.

Station to ground & away entrance

Coaches

Away coaches

If you are on an organised away coach, use the arrival and collection instructions from your club or coach steward. Grimsby Town’s current directions send supporter coaches off Grimsby Road onto Tiverton Street and then to the managed parking area on Harrington Street, close to the Osmond away end.

Do not use those coach bays as ordinary car parking. The council has a specific matchday coach and authorised-vehicle parking order on Harrington Street and Tiverton Street. Ask your coach organiser where you will meet after full-time, because vehicle positions and release arrangements can depend on the fixture.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Contact Grimsby Town’s ticket office before travelling if you need an accessible place in the away allocation or help reaching the Osmond Stand. The club publishes wheelchair accommodation, accessible toilets and limited Blue Badge street bays, but these are not the same as a guaranteed stadium car-park booking. Do not assume a particular accessible bay will be free on arrival.

Accessibility booking contact

Hospital radio headsets
Wired hospital radio headsets are advertised for certain Main Stand seats, pre-arrange to confirm visiting allocation.
After the match

After the match

If you are returning to Cleethorpes station, allow time to leave the Osmond end and walk through the streets back towards the town centre. The club quotes about 20 minutes between the station and ground in normal conditions, so allow more than that when catching a fixed departure just after full-time.

Drivers should return to their preselected car park rather than hunting for a shortcut through Harrington Street or Tiverton Street. Coach movements and matchday parking controls operate there, and tightly packed streets can take time to clear. The newer 18 and 78 matchday buses advertise post-match services, but check the fixture-specific stopping point and last departure before relying on them.

Rail departure buffer
Allow at least the published 20-minute station-ground walk plus extra time to leave the away stand and reach your platform.
Coach and car congestion zone
Harrington Street and Tiverton Street have managed coach parking and matchday traffic restrictions.
Post-match bus routes
Matchday 18 and 78 services advertise return journeys after the final whistle.
Alternative driver departure
Use the selected authorised Cleethorpes car park, avoiding unnecessary stadium-side residential manoeuvres.

Where to stay

Stay in central Cleethorpes if you want a straightforward football weekend. The station, seafront, High Street and Sea View Street put cafés, fish and chips and evening pubs in one walkable area. Blundell Park is roughly 20 minutes away on foot, so you can leave the car at your accommodation if its parking arrangements allow it.

Choose Grimsby town centre if you are arriving by rail, want a larger hotel choice or have plans elsewhere in town. You will need a short onward train or bus journey for the match, making it less convenient for an immediate walk home from the away end. Book accommodation and any hotel parking separately; the nearest place on the map is not automatically the best overnight base.

Swashbuckle Tavern

3 Grant Street, Cleethorpes, DN35 8AT
24 min walkAway fans welcome
BEST FORaway-fan meeting point · train arrivals · pre-match drink
MATCHDAY INTELThe strongest external away-pub call in Cleethorpes. Grimsby’s away guide explicitly describes Swashbuckle as away-friendly, and recent supporter material continues to treat it as a recognised stop for visiting fans near the station.
WORTH KNOWINGNo current written colours policy was found. CAMRA records the address as 1 Grant Street while current business listings use 3 Grant Street; it is the same pub.

Rutland Arms

26 Rutland Street, Grimsby, DN31 3AF

BEST FORnear-ground pint · real ale · mixed supporters
MATCHDAY INTELIt is about ten minutes from Blundell Park.
WORTH KNOWINGThe recent away report supports admission but does not state a colours policy. CAMRA says it gets busy on matchdays, so it may not suit a late large-group arrival.
PUB / BAR

No.2 Refreshment Room

Station Approach, Cleethorpes, DN35 8AX
20 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORearly train arrivals · real ale · quick meeting point
MATCHDAY INTELThe easiest early-arrival pint: No.2 is at Cleethorpes station and opens from 8am every day. It is small and beer-led rather than football-designated, so it suits a few supporters meeting off the train more than a large away following.
WORTH KNOWINGNo current away-fan or colours policy was found. CAMRA warns the bar may close early when quiet, so later post-match use should not be assumed.

Scotties Bar

BEST FORstraight through turnstiles · away-end pint · poor-weather option
MATCHDAY INTELThe simplest drink once you are through the away turnstiles. Grimsby’s current guide identifies Scotties as the indoor visiting-supporters bar, with draught and bottled beer and additional bars depending on allocation.
WORTH KNOWINGAway supporters are usually in the Osmond Stand, but Grimsby can move smaller allocations elsewhere after a match-risk assessment. Check the stand on your ticket.
PUB / BAR

No.1 Pub

Railway Station Approach, Cleethorpes, DN35 8AX
20 min walkAway access: checkLimited food
BEST FORtrain-arrival meeting point · real ale · small groups
MATCHDAY INTELA practical rail-arrival pub right beside Cleethorpes station. Current CAMRA data is fresh, and a visiting-club guide lists No.1 among pubs that usually admit away supporters, making it a sensible meet before walking to Blundell Park.
WORTH KNOWINGAway admission is visiting-guide evidence rather than a house policy. CAMRA does not list Saturday food, and children are only permitted when eating.
PUB / BAR

Nottingham House

5-7 Sea View Street, Cleethorpes, DN35 8EU
Away access: check
BEST FORtraditional pub · town-centre drink · real ale
MATCHDAY INTELA characterful Cleethorpes alternative for supporters who want a proper pub rather than a station bar. Current CAMRA data is fresh, while a visiting-club guide lists Nottingham House among pubs that usually admit away fans.
WORTH KNOWINGAway access is not a published venue policy and no colours rule was found. It is a Cleethorpes-centre detour, not the shortest possible route to the ground.

The classic sit-down Cleethorpes choice. Steels has served the resort since 1946, and the current menu still centres on haddock and chips; it suits supporters arriving early enough to eat properly before the walk to the ground.
