Match night · 2 guests · 1 room
ibis Styles Birmingham Centre
Birmingham city centre / Jewellery Quarter edge
The best all-round overnight base for most Albion visitors: central enough for food, drinks and the main stations, but on the north-west side of the centre so the Metro run out towards The Hawthorns is straightforward.
- St Paul's/St Chads and Snow Hill are practical gateways to the same Metro corridor serving The Hawthorns.
- New Street is walkable for supporters arriving by inter-city rail.
Approximate straight-line distance from mapped coordinates. Use the Metro towards Wolverhampton to The Hawthorns rather than walking.
Rates are volatile: Birmingham conferences, arena events and Christmas-period demand can move prices sharply.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Mercure Birmingham West Hotel
West Bromwich / M5 Junction 1
The practical choice when being close to The Hawthorns matters more than having Birmingham nightlife outside the door. It is a proper full-service hotel rather than a bare-bones room, Booking.com coverage is verified, and a recent football-trip review specifically reports walking to the ground and leaving the car at the hotel.
- The Hawthorns is listed at about 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot by Hotels.com; a recent football visitor reported around 20 minutes.
- On-site restaurant/bar, pool/leisure facilities and parking make it more self-contained than nearby budget options.
About 0.6 miles straight-line; Hotels.com lists roughly 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot. A recent football-family review described the walk as about 20 minutes.
The surrounding area is car- and road-oriented and has far less evening choice than Birmingham city centre.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham Brindley Place
Brindleyplace / Broad Street, Birmingham
The strongest pick for supporters who want the football to roll straight into dinner and drinks. The hotel is in Brindleyplace, immediately off Broad Street, with bars and restaurants around the canals and a Metro stop a couple of minutes away. Its current quality evidence is strong, but the price can jump sharply on business/event nights, so it makes most sense when the rate is reasonable rather than at any price.
- Brindleyplace and Broad Street form one of Birmingham's clearest nightlife/restaurant clusters.
- The Brindleyplace tram stop is on the Metro network serving The Hawthorns.
Approximate straight-line distance from mapped coordinates. Use the Brindleyplace Metro stop for The Hawthorns rather than walking.
It is the most expensive and volatile of the three primary choices in the sampled midweek market.

Parking
Driving & road restrictions
Use the postcode B71 4LF to find The Hawthorns, but navigate to your chosen car park's actual entrance. The ground sits on the A41 Birmingham Road, close to M5 Junction 1. Getting near the stadium is straightforward before restrictions begin; trying to reach the wrong side of Halfords Lane late is not.
Halfords Lane closes to general traffic from 95 minutes before kick-off, and the A41 westbound has further restrictions around full time. A council notice also describes event-day controls on Middlemore Road, protecting the coach route and access for certain residents and businesses.
If driving from outside the area, follow the car park operator's approach instructions instead of the shortest sat-nav route to the stadium. Allow extra time before kick-off and expect delays leaving towards the M5.
- Sat-nav ground postcode
- B71 4LF
- Primary road approach
- A41 Birmingham Road, approximately 600 metres from M5 Junction 1
- Halfords Lane prematch closure
- From 95 minutes before kick-off between Hawthorns Railway Bridge and A41 Birmingham Road; listed resident and club-car-park exemptions
- Halfords Lane postmatch closure
- Until up to 40 minutes after full time
- A41 westbound postmatch restriction
- Birmingham Road westbound Park Lane–Screwfix closed from 10 minutes before full time for up to 40 minutes afterwards
- Middlemore Road 2026 event-day notice
- Temporary closure notice describes controlled access from 95 minutes before until 40 minutes after qualifying 2,000-plus-spectator events, with specified exemptions
Parking & park-and-ride
Book matchday parking if you are driving to The Hawthorns. The simplest supported choice is a space through West Bromwich Albion's parking partner, EST, rather than searching the streets near the Smethwick End. Its advertised car parks are outside the main stadium road-closure area and normally open three hours before kick-off.
Free on-street parking may exist farther out, but we could not confirm an unrestricted section suitable for a whole match. Roebuck Street, Roebuck Lane, Europa Avenue and Beeches Road appear in supporter tips; an older council traffic order identifies waiting restrictions on parts of them. Do not treat a street name as permission to park.
For a paid fallback, consider Sandwell Council's Providence Place South long-stay car park in West Bromwich or New Square's Primark long-stay car park. The council lists £8.50 for over four hours; New Square advertises £7 for over four hours. Both are farther from the away end, so check your walking route before choosing either.
Allow roughly four to five hours for the whole visit, including the walk each way, time before kick-off and getting out. Arriving around 90 minutes early gives more margin, particularly when Halfords Lane begins closing. Matchday parking booked through EST is advertised in advance, but the published information does not promise a numbered bay.
Do not use The Hawthorns station's free Park & Ride just to attend the match: the operator warns of fines if you park without using public transport. New Square's Tesco voucher covers only two hours after qualifying shopping, not a football visit. On Sundays the operator advertises free New Square parking, but matchday-only permission is unconfirmed; check signs and conditions.
- Parking verdict
- Booking advisable; free residential spaces are possible but no named legally unrestricted matchday section was confirmed
- Booking recommendation
- Prefer WBA partner EST parking outside event closures, or an independently authorised pre-booked space with confirmed access
- Official parking partner
- EST; pre-book via club parking guidance or telephone 02476 997605
- EST matchday supply (operator guidance)
- At least three car parks within one mile, approximately 500 spaces in total; first come, first served; availability is not a guaranteed numbered bay
- EST operating window
- Advertised opening three hours before kick-off until two hours after final whistle
- Legal restrictions — Roebuck Street (historical, not a current map)
- 2011 TRO lists no-waiting lengths including entire west side and two parts of east side; current amendments and signs not verified

- Legal restrictions — A41 red-route bays
- Marked bays unavailable before 19:00 weekday evenings and at any time on weekends or bank holidays; red-route restrictions enforced by council
- Free off-street lead — Hawkes Lane council car park

- Paid fallback — Providence Place South
- Long-stay council car park, B70 8SB, 175 spaces, PayByPhone code 802558; over four hours to 23 hours £8.50; pay-and-display hours 08:00–18:00 Mon–Sat including bank holidays
- Paid fallback — New Square Primark Long Stay
- New Square long-stay car park, 05:00–22:00, £7 for over four hours up to eight hours, £12 over eight hours; centre states free parking Sundays; check operator conditions for football-only parking
- Arrive by — stadium area
- Aim to arrive around 90 minutes before kick-off as practical editorial allowance; Halfords Lane closes from 95 minutes before kick-off
- Total dwell time
- Plan for roughly 4–5 hours from parking to departure, rather than a 90-minute or two-hour shop limit
- Supermarket permission/time limit — Tesco at New Square
- £5 Tesco spend gives a £2 parking voucher for up to two hours; Tesco short-stay tariff charges £11 above four hours; separate permission for match-only stays is unconfirmed
- Park & Ride at The Hawthorns
- Free parking conditional on using public transport; TfWM warns of enforcement if parked without travelling
- Sunday council long-stay charges
- Council says pay-and-display charges apply 08:00–18:00 Monday–Saturday including bank holidays; verify site opening/signs if relying on Sunday free time
- After the match
- Halfords Lane closed up to 40 minutes after full time; A41 westbound towards M5 Junction 1 subject to closing restrictions

Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Use the West Midlands Metro to The Hawthorns if you're arriving at Birmingham New Street. Walk to Grand Central tram stop on Stephenson Street, then take the direct tram towards West Bromwich. A visiting-club guide puts the ride at about 15 minutes, with the stadium around five minutes from The Hawthorns stop.
The Hawthorns also has a railway station on the Birmingham Snow Hill–Stourbridge line. Trains run from Moor Street and Snow Hill, so do not assume you can board this local service at New Street. Check the return service and allow extra time after the final whistle.
- Recommended arrival stop
- The Hawthorns (West Midlands Metro); direct service from Grand Central beside Birmingham New Street
- Metro journey — Birmingham Grand Central to The Hawthorns
- About 15 minutes in the August 2026 visiting-club guide; not a live timetable
- Alternative local rail
- The Hawthorns station on the Snow Hill / Moor Street to Stourbridge line; change at Smethwick Galton Bridge for other rail links
- Rail station to stadium
- Approximately 5 minutes to the stadium perimeter, not an individually timed away-turnstile walk
- Hawthorns railway step-free access
- true
Station to ground & away entrance
Head for the Smethwick End, not the home turnstiles, when you reach The Hawthorns. Visiting supporters are normally housed on the East Stand side of that end. From the nearby railway and tram stops, follow the signed pedestrian route around the ground and check the entrance printed on your ticket.
The club gives the away entrance the what3words address ///bride.wiping.dame. If you arrive by official away coach, stewards direct you from Middlemore Road up to the away end; the access ramp can be steep, so arrange assistance before travelling if needed.

Coaches
Away coaches
If you're on an official away coach, expect the designated coach parking on Middlemore Road rather than a normal car park on Halfords Lane. The club and a recent visiting-supporter guide identify this approach, and the council's 2026 event-day road notice specifically exempts visiting coaches from its restricted sections.
Follow the stewarded route to the Smethwick End and return to the coach area after the game. The approach includes a steep ramp, so supporter groups needing an accessible drop-off should arrange this with the club and police beforehand. The precise collection bay may vary by fixture.

Buses
Buses & local travel
For a simple journey from central Birmingham, use the Metro to The Hawthorns. If you would rather take a bus, the 74 runs between Birmingham city centre and Dudley, passing Handsworth and West Bromwich with stops on Birmingham Road outside the ground.
Transport for West Midlands gives roughly 24 minutes from Birmingham on the 74 in normal conditions. That is a guide, not a promise on matchday, when closures and crowds can affect the road outside the stadium. For the return, check live departures and leave enough time to reach the correct stop.
- Bus route serving stadium
- National Express West Midlands 74, Birmingham city centre–Dudley via Handsworth and West Bromwich
- 74 stop location
- Birmingham Road outside The Hawthorns
- Published ordinary bus ride from Birmingham centre
- Approximately 24 minutes; event-day reliability not established
- Direct tram option

Accessibility
Accessible journeys
For accessible travel, The Hawthorns railway station is a strong starting point: National Rail lists step-free access to every platform and station lifts. That does not guarantee an entirely level route to your seat, so confirm the away entrance and any assistance before you set off.
West Bromwich Albion identifies an accessible entrance at the West Stand/Smethwick End corner and advises advance arrangements for accessible coach drop-off. The club also describes designated accessible parking, while Transport for West Midlands recommends the National Timber site for accessible pre-booked matchday parking. Availability is limited, so contact the club rather than assuming a space on arrival.
- The Hawthorns rail station step-free category
- Category A; step-free access to all platforms and lifts present
- Away wheelchair access
- West Stand / Smethwick End corner accessible entrance with ramps; contact club for specific seats and assistance
- Accessible West / Smethwick entrance what3words
- ///rang.expand.kinds (club labels an autism-friendly entrance at this location)

- National Timber Site through EST; book/check in advance

After the match
After the match
For the quickest predictable return, walk back to The Hawthorns station or Metro stop instead of assuming a car near the stadium will move straight away. Both sit close to the ground, but allow for crowds at the platforms and check your onward connection in Birmingham before you travel.
If you drive, do not plan an immediate westbound run along Birmingham Road towards the M5. The club publishes a westbound A41 closure around full time and keeps Halfords Lane restricted for up to 40 minutes after the match. Parking beyond those road controls may mean a longer walk but a simpler exit.
- Public transport return
- The Hawthorns rail and Metro stations near stadium; matchday crowd delay possible
- Westbound A41 restriction after match
- Closed between Park Lane and Screwfix from 10 minutes before full time for up to 40 minutes afterwards
- Halfords Lane reopening
- Up to 40 minutes after final whistle per club guidance
- EST car park hours after match
- Closes two hours after final whistle
Where to stay
Stay in central Birmingham if you want a straightforward rail arrival and more choice after the match. Around New Street and the Jewellery Quarter you can reach Grand Central or a central Metro stop for a direct trip to The Hawthorns. It is usually a better all-round base than searching for a hotel immediately beside the stadium.
If you are driving and mainly want a short stadium journey, Mercure Birmingham West is an option near the M5 Junction 1 side of West Bromwich. That puts you closer to the ground but farther from central Birmingham's evening choices. Check its own parking terms rather than assuming a hotel car park is available to non-guests on matchday.
- Best base for rail users
- Birmingham city centre around New Street / Grand Central and Jewellery Quarter Metro corridor
- Closer driver-oriented hotel example
- Mercure Birmingham West, West Bromwich near motorway / Hawthorns approach

West Brom is easiest by treating Birmingham as the rail hub rather than expecting a strip of guaranteed away pubs beside The Hawthorns. New Street arrivals can take the Grand Central tram to The Hawthorns in about 15 minutes; for a meet-up first, the Jewellery Quarter is the cleanest option, with the Jewellers Arms and Rose Villa close to the stop and direct onward Metro. The traditional away pub remains The Vine: use Kenrick Park, allow 15–20 minutes to walk to the ground and arrive early for the Indian grill, but it has imposed fixture and capacity restrictions, so admission is not guaranteed. The Royal Oak on Holyhead Road is the stronger near-ground food-and-pint alternative. Visitors are in the Smethwick End. Current 2026/27 food intelligence includes chicken tikka and fries inside plus Greek street food outside the away end. The Fan Zone suits daytime fixtures but was routinely shut for night games. For overnighters, Birmingham city centre/Jewellery Quarter is flexible; the Mercure Birmingham West is the clearest football-first near-ground stay.

Current 2026/27 matchday reporting puts a Greek street-food unit immediately outside the away section, making it the most relevant pre-turnstile food lead for Smethwick End visitors.
