BEFORE YOU SET OFF

Put your trip together

01 · Arrive

Your route into The Hawthorns

Head for the Smethwick End, not the home turnstiles, when you reach The Hawthorns. Visiting supporters are normally housed on the East Stand side of that end. From the nearby railway and tram stops, follow the signed pedestrian route around the ground and check the entrance printed on your ticket. The club gives the away entrance the what3words address ///bride.wiping.dame. If you arrive by official away coach, stewards direct you from Middlemore Road up to the away end; the access ramp can be steep, so arrange assistance before travelling if needed.

Parking & park-and-ride

Book matchday parking if you are driving to The Hawthorns. The simplest supported choice is a space through West Bromwich Albion's parking partner, EST, rather than searching the streets near the Smethwick End. Its advertised car parks are outside the main stadium road-closure area and normally open three hours before kick-off. Free on-street parking may exist farther out, but we could not confirm an unrestricted section suitable for a whole match. Roebuck Street, Roebuck Lane, Europa Avenue and Beeches Road appear in supporter tips; an older council traffic order identifies waiting restrictions on parts of them. Do not treat a street name as permission to park. For a paid fallback, consider Sandwell Council's Providence Place South long-stay car park in West Bromwich or New Square's Primark long-stay car park. The council lists £8.50 for over four hours; New Square advertises £7 for over four hours. Both are farther from the away end, so check your walking route before choosing either. Allow roughly four to five hours for the whole visit, including the walk each way, time before kick-off and getting out. Arriving around 90 minutes early gives more margin, particularly when Halfords Lane begins closing. Matchday parking booked through EST is advertised in advance, but the published information does not promise a numbered bay. Do not use The Hawthorns station's free Park & Ride just to attend the match: the operator warns of fines if you park without using public transport. New Square's Tesco voucher covers only two hours after qualifying shopping, not a football visit. On Sundays the operator advertises free New Square parking, but matchday-only permission is unconfirmed; check signs and conditions.

Driving & road restrictions

Use the postcode B71 4LF to find The Hawthorns, but navigate to your chosen car park's actual entrance. The ground sits on the A41 Birmingham Road, close to M5 Junction 1. Getting near the stadium is straightforward before restrictions begin; trying to reach the wrong side of Halfords Lane late is not.

Halfords Lane closes to general traffic from 95 minutes before kick-off, and the A41 westbound has further restrictions around full time. A council notice also describes event-day controls on Middlemore Road, protecting the coach route and access for certain residents and businesses.

If driving from outside the area, follow the car park operator's approach instructions instead of the shortest sat-nav route to the stadium. Allow extra time before kick-off and expect delays leaving towards the M5.

WHERE TO STAY

Driving and staying overnight?

Plan a base for the match. Check parking arrangements with the hotel before booking.

Where to stay

Stay in central Birmingham if you want a straightforward rail arrival and more choice after the match. Around New Street and the Jewellery Quarter you can reach Grand Central or a central Metro stop for a direct trip to The Hawthorns. It is usually a better all-round base than searching for a hotel immediately beside the stadium. If you are driving and mainly want a short stadium journey, Mercure Birmingham West is an option near the M5 Junction 1 side of West Bromwich. That puts you closer to the ground but farther from central Birmingham's evening choices. Check its own parking terms rather than assuming a hotel car park is available to non-guests on matchday.

Find Us ↗

Default to central Birmingham unless you specifically want to minimise matchday travel. The Jewellery Quarter/Colmore side of the centre is the best balance for The Hawthorns and the main stations; Brindleyplace/Broad Street is stronger if post-match food and drinks are a priority. Choose the Mercure by the ground when walking to the match and lower typical rates outweigh nightlife.

For the evening

Broad Street and Brindleyplace are the clearest supporter-friendly evening base, with dense bars, restaurants and canalside venues. The Metro runs through Brindleyplace and on towards The Hawthorns, which makes the area much more practical for football than its city-centre distance suggests.

For the train

Long-distance arrivals usually come through Birmingham New Street. The club also points visitors towards Snow Hill for local rail/Metro, while the current Metro network runs through central stops including Grand Central, St Chads, St Paul's and Brindleyplace before reaching The Hawthorns.
