FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW DERBY COUNTY TO WEST BROMWICH ALBION

This fixture is still months away, on 7 April. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Derby County are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Recent results give Derby County two points from a possible fifteen, with two draws and three defeats in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, West Bromwich Albion have taken eight points from a possible fifteen: two wins, two draws and one defeat. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Derby County are 23rd in the Championship after 11 league games, with 6 points. Their league position and recent results are the clearest guide to the task here.

West Bromwich Albion were 6th in the Championship after 8 league games, with 14 points in the latest saved table.

The destination is The Hawthorns in West Bromwich. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. Default to central Birmingham unless you specifically want to minimise matchday travel. The Jewellery Quarter/Colmore side of the centre is the best balance for The Hawthorns and the main stations; Brindleyplace/Broad Street is stronger if post-match food and drinks are a priority. Choose the Mercure by the ground when walking to the match and lower typical rates outweigh nightlife. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

For Derby County supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 21 October.

WHY STAY HERE?

ibis Styles Birmingham Centre

Birmingham city centre / Jewellery Quarter edge

Our view

The best all-round overnight base for most Albion visitors: central enough for food, drinks and the main stations, but on the north-west side of the centre so the Metro run out towards The Hawthorns is straightforward. It is not the cheapest option in every sample, yet its Booking.com review profile is materially stronger than the most basic city-centre budget hotels and it avoids the relative isolation of staying by the ground.

Why it suits this trip

  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the hotel carries a strong current review score and location score.
  • St Paul's/St Chads and Snow Hill are practical gateways to the same Metro corridor serving The Hawthorns.
  • New Street is walkable for supporters arriving by inter-city rail.
  • The city-centre location gives a much better post-match choice of pubs, bars and restaurants than the immediate stadium area.
  • Recent reviews repeatedly praise central location, cleanliness and overall value.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from mapped coordinates. Use the Metro towards Wolverhampton to The Hawthorns rather than walking.

Pubs and the evening

More balanced than being directly on Broad Street: restaurants and bars are close, while the hotel is slightly removed from the busiest late-night strip.

Arriving by train

Accor lists New Street at about a 13-minute walk; Snow Hill/St Chads gives convenient access towards The Hawthorns.

The trade-offs

  • Rates are volatile: Birmingham conferences, arena events and Christmas-period demand can move prices sharply.
  • It is not a walk-to-the-ground hotel; use the Metro or local rail.
  • Recent reviews include isolated complaints about Wi-Fi, lift waits, temperature/noise and inconsistent front-desk service.

Research price context

Sampled around £135–£177 midweek and roughly £98–£170 at weekends. Birmingham demand is event-sensitive, so the useful message is volatility rather than a guaranteed weekend premium.

Mercure Birmingham West Hotel

Mercure Birmingham West Hotel

West Bromwich / M5 Junction 1

The practical choice when being close to The Hawthorns matters more than having Birmingham nightlife outside the door. It is a proper full-service hotel rather than a bare-bones room, Booking.com coverage is verified, and a recent football-trip review specifically reports walking to the ground and leaving the car at the hotel.

  • The Hawthorns is listed at about 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot by Hotels.com; a recent football visitor reported around 20 minutes.
  • On-site restaurant/bar, pool/leisure facilities and parking make it more self-contained than nearby budget options.
The match journey

About 0.6 miles straight-line; Hotels.com lists roughly 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot. A recent football-family review described the walk as about 20 minutes.

The trade-off

The surrounding area is car- and road-oriented and has far less evening choice than Birmingham city centre.

WHY STAY HERE?

Mercure Birmingham West Hotel

West Bromwich / M5 Junction 1

Our view

The practical choice when being close to The Hawthorns matters more than having Birmingham nightlife outside the door. It is a proper full-service hotel rather than a bare-bones room, Booking.com coverage is verified, and a recent football-trip review specifically reports walking to the ground and leaving the car at the hotel. The trade-off is that this is a matchday-convenience base, not where to stay for a big night out.

Why it suits this trip

  • The Hawthorns is listed at about 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot by Hotels.com; a recent football visitor reported around 20 minutes.
  • Booking.com and Accor both confirm the hotel is operating under the Mercure brand.
  • On-site restaurant/bar, pool/leisure facilities and parking make it more self-contained than nearby budget options.
  • Normal sampled rates were substantially lower than central Birmingham primary choices.
  • Recent reviews repeatedly praise staff and, in many cases, cleanliness.

Getting to the ground

About 0.6 miles straight-line; Hotels.com lists roughly 1.2 km / 14 minutes on foot. A recent football-family review described the walk as about 20 minutes.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel has its own bar/restaurant, but supporters wanting a broader post-match night out are better based in Birmingham city centre.

Arriving by train

Hotels.com lists The Hawthorns station at roughly 25 minutes on foot, so this hotel is much stronger for walking to the stadium or driving than for station convenience.

The trade-offs

  • The surrounding area is car- and road-oriented and has far less evening choice than Birmingham city centre.
  • The hotel is not especially close to The Hawthorns rail/Metro station even though the stadium itself is walkable.
  • Recent reviews are mixed on maintenance/leisure facilities and include occasional cleanliness and overnight-noise complaints.

Research price context

Typically around £82–£91 on the sampled midweeks and £72–£86 on sampled weekends. It was markedly cheaper than the central Birmingham primary choices on the same representative dates.

The strongest pick for supporters who want the football to roll straight into dinner and drinks. The hotel is in Brindleyplace, immediately off Broad Street, with bars and restaurants around the canals and a Metro stop a couple of minutes away. Its current quality evidence is strong, but the price can jump sharply on business/event nights, so it makes most sense when the rate is reasonable rather than at any price.

  • The Brindleyplace tram stop is on the Metro network serving The Hawthorns.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and gives the property a strong current location and cleanliness profile.

  • On-site restaurant and bar provide a fallback if supporters do not want to head out again after checking in.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from mapped coordinates. Use the Brindleyplace Metro stop for The Hawthorns rather than walking.

Pubs and the evening

Bars, restaurants and canalside venues are immediately around the hotel; Broad Street's wider late-night strip is adjacent.

Arriving by train

New Street is walkable; the hotel is even better placed for the Brindleyplace Metro stop, which avoids a cross-centre walk after the match.

The trade-offs

  • It is the most expensive and volatile of the three primary choices in the sampled midweek market.
  • On-site parking was £24/day when checked.
  • Recent reviews include repeated comments about warm rooms/air-conditioning limitations and some dated-bathroom observations.

Research price context

Highly date-sensitive: the representative sample was about £198–£270 midweek and £101–£214 at weekends. The market showed no dependable weekend premium; business/event demand drove some midweek nights much higher.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Hawthorns

The ground

Derby County at West Bromwich Albion

Compact, enclosed and visibly assembled from different rebuilding phases rather than designed as one bowl. The Birmingham Road End carries much of the classic home-end mythology; the Smethwick End places visiting supporters alongside home support; the East Stand is the main modern face; the West Stand carries the lineage of Halfords Lane. Outside, the Astle Gates and Brown statue make the approach part of the club story.

Recorded capacity
26,445

Views from the away section

Away views are unobstructed; tall supporters may find legroom tight.

Supporter observation

The Smethwick End gives away supporters a very good overall view of the pitch. It is one of the more straightforward visiting sections for following the game, with recent Swansea guidance also rating the sightlines highly.

Why the ground matters

The Hawthorns has been Albion's home since 1900, so the power of the place is cumulative. It is not prized because every stand is architecturally old — most are not — but because 125-plus years of Albion history has happened on the same patch of West Bromwich. Stand names, pub references, memorials and sightlines have become a shared vocabulary.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Derby County at West Bromwich Albion

Can be very strong for local/important games.

Bouncing to Boing Boing

Physical movement is part of the chant; it reads immediately as Albion even without a badge.

Singing The Lord's My Shepherd before kick-off

The club has actively cued the song as teams emerge, turning an old terrace habit into a stadium-wide pre-match ritual.

Annual end-of-year memorial for members of the Albion community who have died.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Hawthorns

Food & drink

Derby County at West Bromwich Albion

West Brom is easiest by treating Birmingham as the rail hub rather than expecting a strip of guaranteed away pubs beside The Hawthorns. New Street arrivals can take the Grand Central tram to The Hawthorns in about 15 minutes; for a meet-up first, the Jewellery Quarter is the cleanest option, with the Jewellers Arms and Rose Villa close to the stop and direct onward Metro.

Food and drink around the ground

The traditional away pub remains The Vine: use Kenrick Park, allow 15–20 minutes to walk to the ground and arrive early for the Indian grill, but it has imposed fixture and capacity restrictions, so admission is not guaranteed. The Royal Oak on Holyhead Road is the stronger near-ground food-and-pint alternative. Visitors are in the Smethwick End. Current 2026/27 food intelligence includes chicken tikka and fries inside plus Greek street food outside the away end.

The Fan Zone suits daytime fixtures but was routinely shut for night games. For overnighters, Birmingham city centre/Jewellery Quarter is flexible; the Mercure Birmingham West is the clearest football-first near-ground stay.

The Vine

The classic West Brom away stop and still the best-supported choice for a pint with a desi grill. Kenrick Park is the useful Metro stop; on busy games it can be rammed before the walk to the ground.

Accessibility

Derby County at West Bromwich Albion

For accessible travel, The Hawthorns railway station is a strong starting point: National Rail lists step-free access to every platform and station lifts. That does not guarantee an entirely level route to your seat, so confirm the away entrance and any assistance before you set off. West Bromwich Albion identifies an accessible entrance at the West Stand/Smethwick End corner and advises advance arrangements for accessible coach drop-off.

Buses & local travel

For a simple journey from central Birmingham, use the Metro to The Hawthorns. If you would rather take a bus, the 74 runs between Birmingham city centre and Dudley, passing Handsworth and West Bromwich with stops on Birmingham Road outside the ground. Transport for West Midlands gives roughly 24 minutes from Birmingham on the 74 in normal conditions. That is a guide, not a promise on matchday, when closures and crowds can affect the road outside the stadium.

For the return, check live departures and leave enough time to reach the correct stop.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Hawthorns

Parking

Derby County at West Bromwich Albion

Book matchday parking if you are driving to The Hawthorns. The simplest supported choice is a space through West Bromwich Albion's parking partner, EST, rather than searching the streets near the Smethwick End. Its advertised car parks are outside the main stadium road-closure area and normally open three hours before kick-off. Free on-street parking may exist farther out, but we could not confirm an unrestricted section suitable for a whole match.

Parking & park-and-ride

Roebuck Street, Roebuck Lane, Europa Avenue and Beeches Road appear in supporter tips; an older council traffic order identifies waiting restrictions on parts of them. Do not treat a street name as permission to park. For a paid fallback, consider Sandwell Council's Providence Place South long-stay car park in West Bromwich or New Square's Primark long-stay car park. The council lists £8.50 for over four hours; New Square advertises £7 for over four hours.

Both are farther from the away end, so check your walking route before choosing either. Allow roughly four to five hours for the whole visit, including the walk each way, time before kick-off and getting out. Arriving around 90 minutes early gives more margin, particularly when Halfords Lane begins closing. Matchday parking booked through EST is advertised in advance, but the published information does not promise a numbered bay.

Do not use The Hawthorns station's free Park & Ride just to attend the match: the operator warns of fines if you park without using public transport. New Square's Tesco voucher covers only two hours after qualifying shopping, not a football visit. On Sundays the operator advertises free New Square parking, but matchday-only permission is unconfirmed; check signs and conditions.

Parking verdict

Driving & road restrictions

Use the postcode B71 4LF to find The Hawthorns, but navigate to your chosen car park's actual entrance. The ground sits on the A41 Birmingham Road, close to M5 Junction 1. Getting near the stadium is straightforward before restrictions begin; trying to reach the wrong side of Halfords Lane late is not. Halfords Lane closes to general traffic from 95 minutes before kick-off, and the A41 westbound has further restrictions around full time.

A council notice also describes event-day controls on Middlemore Road, protecting the coach route and access for certain residents and businesses. Rail, Underground & tram

Use the West Midlands Metro to The Hawthorns if you're arriving at Birmingham New Street. Walk to Grand Central tram stop on Stephenson Street, then take the direct tram towards West Bromwich. A visiting-club guide puts the ride at about 15 minutes, with the stadium around five minutes from The Hawthorns stop.

The Hawthorns also has a railway station on the Birmingham Snow Hill–Stourbridge line. Trains run from Moor Street and Snow Hill, so do not assume you can board this local service at New Street. Check the return service and allow extra time after the final whistle.

Coaches

Away coaches

If you're on an official away coach, expect the designated coach parking on Middlemore Road rather than a normal car park on Halfords Lane. The club and a recent visiting-supporter guide identify this approach, and the council's 2026 event-day road notice specifically exempts visiting coaches from its restricted sections.

Follow the stewarded route to the Smethwick End and return to the coach area after the game. The approach includes a steep ramp, so supporter groups needing an accessible drop-off should arrange this with the club and police beforehand. The precise collection bay may vary by fixture.

Buses

Buses & local travel

For a simple journey from central Birmingham, use the Metro to The Hawthorns. If you would rather take a bus, the 74 runs between Birmingham city centre and Dudley, passing Handsworth and West Bromwich with stops on Birmingham Road outside the ground.

Transport for West Midlands gives roughly 24 minutes from Birmingham on the 74 in normal conditions. That is a guide, not a promise on matchday, when closures and crowds can affect the road outside the stadium. For the return, check live departures and leave enough time to reach the correct stop.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

For accessible travel, The Hawthorns railway station is a strong starting point: National Rail lists step-free access to every platform and station lifts. That does not guarantee an entirely level route to your seat, so confirm the away entrance and any assistance before you set off.

West Bromwich Albion identifies an accessible entrance at the West Stand/Smethwick End corner and advises advance arrangements for accessible coach drop-off. The club also describes designated accessible parking, while Transport for West Midlands recommends the National Timber site for accessible pre-booked matchday parking. Availability is limited, so contact the club rather than assuming a space on arrival.

After the match

After the match

For the quickest predictable return, walk back to The Hawthorns station or Metro stop instead of assuming a car near the stadium will move straight away. Both sit close to the ground, but allow for crowds at the platforms and check your onward connection in Birmingham before you travel.

If you drive, do not plan an immediate westbound run along Birmingham Road towards the M5. The club publishes a westbound A41 closure around full time and keeps Halfords Lane restricted for up to 40 minutes after the match. Parking beyond those road controls may mean a longer walk but a simpler exit.

Where to stay

Stay in central Birmingham if you want a straightforward rail arrival and more choice after the match. Around New Street and the Jewellery Quarter you can reach Grand Central or a central Metro stop for a direct trip to The Hawthorns. It is usually a better all-round base than searching for a hotel immediately beside the stadium.

If you are driving and mainly want a short stadium journey, Mercure Birmingham West is an option near the M5 Junction 1 side of West Bromwich. That puts you closer to the ground but farther from central Birmingham's evening choices. Check its own parking terms rather than assuming a hotel car park is available to non-guests on matchday.

AWAY-DAY OVERVIEW

Before you head to the ground

West Brom is easiest by treating Birmingham as the rail hub rather than expecting a strip of guaranteed away pubs beside The Hawthorns.

Read full overview Hide full overview

West Brom is easiest by treating Birmingham as the rail hub rather than expecting a strip of guaranteed away pubs beside The Hawthorns. New Street arrivals can take the Grand Central tram to The Hawthorns in about 15 minutes; for a meet-up first, the Jewellery Quarter is the cleanest option, with the Jewellers Arms and Rose Villa close to the stop and direct onward Metro.

The Vine

152 Roebuck Street, West Bromwich, B70 6RD
Away access: check
BEST FORtraditional away-pub atmosphere · desi grill · groups arriving early
MATCHDAY INTELThe classic West Brom away stop and still the best-supported choice for a pint with a desi grill. Kenrick Park is the useful Metro stop; on busy games it can be rammed before the walk to the ground.
WORTH KNOWINGAway admission is not guaranteed: Oxford supporters reported temporary home-only/capacity restrictions in February 2025. Arrive early, keep groups sensible and recheck the fixture.
PUB / BAR

Rose Villa Tavern

172 Warstone Lane, Birmingham, B18 6JW
Away access: check
BEST FORNew Street arrivals meeting before the Metro · groups wanting food · city-centre overnighters
MATCHDAY INTELFor New Street arrivals meeting before the final leg, this is one of the most practical choices: close to Jewellery Quarter station, proper pub food, live sport and a direct Metro route onwards.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent away guides recommend it, but the venue publishes no football or colours policy. Leave enough time for the Metro and matchday crowds.
PUB / BAR

Smethwick End away concourse

The Hawthorns, Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, B71 4LF
0 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORlate arrivals · supporters avoiding pub restrictions · simple hot food inside the away end
MATCHDAY INTELFor late arrivals, the Smethwick End has current confirmed hot-food and drink provision, with card-only payment. 2026/27 reporting and a current Footy Scran mirror both point to chicken tikka and fries at £8.50.
WORTH KNOWINGOutside food is prohibited. Exact availability can rotate or sell out, so treat the tikka-and-fries price as current-season evidence rather than a permanent tariff.
PUB / BAR

Mercure Birmingham West - Lounge Bar and Restaurant 1896

Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, B70 6TU
20 min walkAway access: check
BEST FORfootball-first overnight stay · breakfast before departure · supporters wanting to leave the car at the hotel
MATCHDAY INTELFor a football-first overnight, this is the clearest near-ground base: an Ipswich traveller used it for an April 2026 away day and put the walk at about 20 minutes. The hotel has a lounge bar and Restaurant 1896.
WORTH KNOWINGAway-fan hotel use is evidenced; walk-in matchday bar access for non-guests and any colours policy are not. Staying here is the stronger case.
PUB / BAR

The Royal Oak

171 Holyhead Road, Birmingham, B21 0BD
Away access: check
BEST FORnear-ground meal · mixed grill · supporters avoiding the busiest Vine crowd
MATCHDAY INTELNearer the ground than The Vine and worth choosing for the food: an Indian grill with mixed platters, tikka and curries. Older official away guidance calls it away-friendly, while 2026 supporter reports put it close to the stadium.
WORTH KNOWINGThe pub is current, but its away-friendly evidence is older and no current colours policy is published. Check before taking a large group.
PUB / BAR

The Red Lion

190 All Saints Way, West Bromwich, B71 1RH
Away access: check
BEST FORmixed grill · proper pre-match meal · supporters with time before kick-off
MATCHDAY INTELA serious desi-pub food option, with the mixed grill the obvious order. A current ground guide lists it for away supporters, but it is more of a West Bromwich meal stop than a last-minute ground pub.
WORTH KNOWINGAway access comes from an independent guide rather than a house football policy; shirt rules and a dependable stadium walking time remain unverified.
PUB / BAR

The Jewellers Arms

23 Hockley Street, Birmingham, B18 6BW
Away access: check
BEST FORreal ale · small groups · rail arrivals meeting away from the ground
MATCHDAY INTELBest for real ale rather than lunch: current listings show up to a dozen cask beers and simple cobs/snacks, about 200 metres from Jewellery Quarter station. Oxford supporters used it successfully before their 2025 trip.
WORTH KNOWINGIt is a normal local, not a designated away pub. No colours policy was found, so keep large groups low-key and use Rose Villa if food matters.
PUB / BAR

1000 Trades

16 Frederick Street, Birmingham, B1 3HE
Away access: check
BEST FORproper meal · smaller groups · overnight stays in Birmingham or Jewellery Quarter
MATCHDAY INTELA relaxed Jewellery Quarter food-and-beer option for smaller groups or overnighters, with seasonal cooking, hot sandwiches and Sunday roasts. Oxford fans used it after the match and explicitly noted that it was not a football pub.
WORTH KNOWINGUseful because of the transport link, not because it promises football admission. No away-colours policy was found; large singing groups should choose a football-led venue.

What to eatRecent official daytime match packs advertise food and drink; the exact trader and menu mix changes by fixture.

When it runs, this is the easiest no-detour option beside the stadium: recent official daytime match packs admitted both clubs with a valid ticket, with food, drink and family activities before kick-off.

WORTH KNOWINGNight fixtures were repeatedly run without the Fan Zone in 2025/26. Check the current match pack; hours, entertainment and food offers can change.

Smethwick End exterior Greek street-food concession

Outside the Smethwick End, The Hawthorns, Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, B71 4LF

Greek street foodexterior matchday concession
What to eatGreek street food is the current-season offer reported for the exterior away-end unit; a fixed operator and itemised menu were not independently verified.

Current 2026/27 matchday reporting puts a Greek street-food unit immediately outside the away section, making it the most relevant pre-turnstile food lead for Smethwick End visitors.

BEST FORfood immediately before entering the away end · supporters short on time · alternative to concourse food
WORTH KNOWINGThe operator and fixed menu were not independently identified. Treat this as a current-season concession lead and recheck the fixture rather than relying on it year-round.
