FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW ACCRINGTON STANLEY TO PORT VALE

The destination is Vale Park in Stoke-on-Trent. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. Choose Hanley if the trip includes dinner, drinks or a night out and you want a full-service hotel with stronger current quality evidence. Choose Burslem only when being able to walk to Vale Park is the overriding priority and you are comfortable with a simpler, still-settling hotel offer. The Stoke town/railway-station area can work for rail arrivals and better-value apartment-style accommodation, but it leaves you farther from Vale Park and usually needing a taxi or bus.

Accrington Stanley are 11th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points. Their league position and recent results are the clearest guide to the task here. Accrington Stanley are two points off 7th and the last play-off place. That is a gap to work on, not a reason to assume a place is already within reach.

Port Vale are 20th in League Two after 10 league games, with 12 points. Set that against the summer expectation: promotion favourites. They have ground to make up on that early ambition. Port Vale are five points off 7th and the last play-off place. That is a gap to work on, not a reason to assume a place is already within reach.

Over their last five recorded league games, Accrington Stanley have taken nine points from a possible fifteen: two wins and three draws. Port Vale come into the current picture with three wins, one draw and one defeat across their last five league games, worth ten points from a possible fifteen.

Build the day around supporting Accrington Stanley from the away end, with time to meet up before the match rather than arriving at the turnstiles in a rush. Confirm the tickets and kick-off first, then compare the return journey with an overnight stay.

Hilton Garden Inn Stoke on Trent

Hilton Garden Inn Stoke on Trent

Hanley city centre / Cultural Quarter

The best-balanced Port Vale overnight choice in this research, especially for supporters who want the match to be part of a full evening rather than simply sleeping beside the ground. It is in Hanley, close to the Cultural Quarter and Piccadilly, with a much stronger current evidence base than the closest Burslem option. It is not a stadium hotel: the sensible matchday plan is bus/taxi between Hanley and Burslem.

  • Hanley location puts a meaningful selection of food, pubs and bars within the evening area rather than leaving supporters dependent on the stadium neighbourhood.
  • Hilton's own current page confirms restaurant, fitness centre, room service, digital key and a city-centre location within half a mile of the Cultural Quarter.
The match journey

KAYAK lists Vale Park 2.1 miles from the hotel. Walking is physically possible for some supporters, but bus/taxi is the more practical default, particularly after an evening game or if using Hanley for drinks. Port Vale's own guidance confirms buses run from Hanley towards Burslem.

The trade-off

Vale Park is about 2.1 miles away on current KAYAK location data; this is not the choice for supporters who want to step out of the hotel and straight into the ground.

WHY STAY HERE?

Hilton Garden Inn Stoke on Trent

Hanley city centre / Cultural Quarter

Our view

The best-balanced Port Vale overnight choice in this research, especially for supporters who want the match to be part of a full evening rather than simply sleeping beside the ground. It is in Hanley, close to the Cultural Quarter and Piccadilly, with a much stronger current evidence base than the closest Burslem option. It is not a stadium hotel: the sensible matchday plan is bus/taxi between Hanley and Burslem. Its main weakness is value — the three Booking.com samples were £136.22-£175.16 for one room/two adults — and £9 daily parking adds to the cost.

Why it suits this trip

  • Hanley location puts a meaningful selection of food, pubs and bars within the evening area rather than leaving supporters dependent on the stadium neighbourhood.
  • Verified on Booking.com with a large current review sample: 8.4/10 from 2,764 reviews in the live provider result checked on 25 September 2026.
  • Hilton's own current page confirms restaurant, fitness centre, room service, digital key and a city-centre location within half a mile of the Cultural Quarter.
  • Current public transport evidence supports Hanley-to-Burslem travel; First Bus service 103 is one current example taking roughly 11-16 minutes from Hanley Bus Station to Burslem Wedgwood Place in the sampled Saturday timetable.
  • Current Tripadvisor feedback repeatedly supports clean/comfortable rooms and friendly staff, even though food/service complaints are also present.

Getting to the ground

KAYAK lists Vale Park 2.1 miles from the hotel. Walking is physically possible for some supporters, but bus/taxi is the more practical default, particularly after an evening game or if using Hanley for drinks. Port Vale's own guidance confirms buses run from Hanley towards Burslem.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel is within half a mile of the Cultural Quarter. Visit Stoke currently lists multiple Piccadilly options including the Unicorn Inn and Peter's Tavern, giving a visitor more choice after the match than the immediate Vale Park area.

Arriving by train

Hilton describes Stoke rail station as about a mile away; KAYAK lists 0.9 miles. A recent Tripadvisor reviewer specifically noted that the walk from the station to the hotel is long and steep, so a short bus/taxi is sensible with luggage.

The hotel

Current evidence is broadly good but not spotless. Booking.com's live result showed 8.4/10 from 2,764 reviews; Tripadvisor showed 4.1/5 from 271. Cleanliness, comfort and friendly staff recur positively. Restaurant performance and the parking charge recur negatively. Two recent access/privacy-related guest reports are material enough to disclose, although they do not dominate the much larger review base.

The trade-offs

  • Vale Park is about 2.1 miles away on current KAYAK location data; this is not the choice for supporters who want to step out of the hotel and straight into the ground.
  • The hotel sits at the expensive end of the local market in the sampled Booking.com dates.
  • Official parking is £9 per day and is across the road rather than included.
  • Several recent Tripadvisor reviews criticise restaurant service/food and some tired or stained furnishings.
  • Two recent Tripadvisor reports, in July and September 2026, describe room-allocation/door-control lapses. Management acknowledged the July incident and said corrective team training had been carried out; the September complaint was also acknowledged for investigation.

Research price context

Observed Booking.com prices for one room/two adults were £175.16 on Wed 7 Oct 2026, £136.22 on Sat 10 Oct 2026 (Port Vale v Grimsby home-match night) and £154.99 on Sat 24 Oct 2026. These are live observations checked on 25 Sep 2026, not a guaranteed or timeless range.

George Hotel, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent

Burslem town centre / Swan Square

The proximity answer is straightforward: this is the closest practical conventional hotel found and verified, around 0.5 miles/9 minutes' walk from Vale Park. The editorial decision is less straightforward.

  • Current Expedia/Hotels.com location data places Vale Park about 0.5 miles/9 minutes away on foot.
  • Fresh post-reopening Booking.com reviews currently score the hotel 8.5/10 from 20 reviews, with staff 9.7, value 9.3 and cleanliness 8.7 in the current listing.
The match journey

Expedia and Hotels.com both currently list Vale Park at about 0.5 miles/0.8 km and 9 minutes on foot. This is the main reason to choose the George.

The trade-off

The fresh post-reopening review sample is very small, so the apparently strong score has much lower evidential weight than the large-sample chain hotels.

WHY STAY HERE?

George Hotel, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent

Burslem town centre / Swan Square

Our view

The proximity answer is straightforward: this is the closest practical conventional hotel found and verified, around 0.5 miles/9 minutes' walk from Vale Park. The editorial decision is less straightforward. The George closed in June 2024 and has only recently reopened to the general public; current Booking.com feedback is encouraging but based on a tiny fresh sample, and recent guests say breakfast and some facilities are not yet available while refurbishment continues. For a budget-minded supporter who mainly wants a bed, parking and the shortest matchday walk it is useful. It is not yet strong enough to displace the Hilton Garden Inn as the overall recommendation.

Why it suits this trip

  • Current Expedia/Hotels.com location data places Vale Park about 0.5 miles/9 minutes away on foot.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified, with £57.78 observed for both 7 October and the 10 October Port Vale v Grimsby home-match night.
  • Fresh post-reopening Booking.com reviews currently score the hotel 8.5/10 from 20 reviews, with staff 9.7, value 9.3 and cleanliness 8.7 in the current listing.
  • Current guest comments specifically praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff.
  • Free parking is listed on the current Booking.com property page.

Getting to the ground

Expedia and Hotels.com both currently list Vale Park at about 0.5 miles/0.8 km and 9 minutes on foot. This is the main reason to choose the George.

Pubs and the evening

Burslem has a genuine real-ale scene, but current visiting-supporter guidance can designate central pubs as home-only. For an away fan planning a proper post-match evening, Hanley is the safer base to plan around.

Arriving by train

Hotels.com lists Longport station at about a 20-minute walk from the hotel. Port Vale's own guidance says Longport is a 25-minute walk from Vale Park. For most national rail journeys, Stoke-on-Trent station has the broader service pattern but requires onward bus/taxi.

The hotel

The reopened hotel's current signal is promising but low-confidence. Booking.com currently shows 8.5/10 from only 20 reviews, with particularly strong staff/value scores. Fresh comments describe clean, comfortable rooms and helpful staff, but also make clear that the property has only recently reopened and some facilities are still unavailable. Historical pre-closure review scores were poor; they are not directly representative of the reopened operation, but they reinforce the need to keep monitoring rather than treating the new 8.5 score as settled.

The trade-offs

  • The fresh post-reopening review sample is very small, so the apparently strong score has much lower evidential weight than the large-sample chain hotels.
  • Recent Booking.com guest evidence says the hotel has recently reopened and that breakfast and some facilities are not currently available.
  • The property had a material closure in June 2024. Old poor reviews belong to the pre-closure operation and should not be blended uncritically with the reopened hotel, but the history warrants caution.
  • A current OYO-branded property page remains online and mentions facilities such as a bar, while fresh Booking.com guest evidence says some facilities are unavailable. Because of that conflict, no independent official/direct hotel website is treated as verified in this file.
  • Burslem can be excellent for real ale, but a current 2026 visiting-club away guide says all central Burslem pubs are home-fans-only for that fixture; away supporters need fixture-specific checks rather than assuming local pubs are available.

Research price context

Booking.com returned £57.78 for one room/two adults on both Wed 7 Oct and Sat 10 Oct 2026. The hotel was not returned with availability in the sampled Sat 24 Oct 2026 search. The low rate should be read alongside the currently limited facilities and very small fresh review base.

What to expect at Port Vale

YOUR AWAY DAY · Vale Park

The ground

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

Vale Park has the broad footprint of an ambitious post-war ground, set above Burslem on land once worked for clay and fireclay. Its stand names preserve local stories: Railway recalls the Potteries Loop Line, while Hamil Road has acquired a new place as the home end. Reused material from earlier football grounds adds another layer to the stadium's history.

Recorded capacity
19,052

Views from the away section

The Bycars away end generally has good views and excellent acoustics, though some seats can have restricted sightlines.

Supporter observation

A March 2024 visitor report highlights a large pillar producing a significant restricted view in part of the away accommodation.

Around the stands

Supporter observation

A recent Sunderland visit described Vale Park as a genuine throwback away day, with muddy approaches, old-school turnstiles and a distinctly traditional lower-league feel rather than a polished modern-stadium experience.

Why the ground matters

Vale Park opened in 1950 with ambitions large enough to earn the Wembley of the North nickname. Built on former clay-working land above Burslem, it has changed in stages, bringing together stands, reused structures and additions from different periods. Supporters have helped care for it and placed their own memories around it, from Sproson's statue to the anniversary mural.

Hamil Road End

Hamil became the home end after the atmosphere generated by Vale supporters at the 2022 Swindon play-off semi-final helped demonstrate its potential. Its structure also includes material reused from Chester City's Sealand Road.

Bycars Stand

Bycars became the regular away end in 2023/24, reversing the arrangement many returning visitors remember. Match-specific guidance remains the place to confirm an allocation.

Railway Stand

The stand takes its name from the former Potteries Loop Line beside the stadium. A vanished railway remains part of the language around the ground.

Roy Sproson statue

The statue outside Vale Park followed a supporter campaign to honour the club's record appearance-maker and his long service.

Community photo mosaic

Supporters supplied the photographs that form the anniversary portraits of John Rudge, Roy Sproson, Robbie Earle and Tom Pope.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Vale Park

Atmosphere & acoustics

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

The large covered end can generate substantial away noise.

From the supporters

Supporter observation

Vale Park can produce a good old-fashioned swing in noise between the two ends. A large away following can make plenty of sound under cover, but once Vale get on top the home support can respond strongly and quickly change the feel of the ground.

The Wonder of You

The song has become a familiar part of Vale support. At Chelsea in 2026, thousands continued singing it through a heavy quarter-final defeat.

Boom Boom Super Vale

Club folklore

The 1990s chant is remembered as the likely source of mascot Boomer's name, although that origin is not certain.

Hamil Road as the home noise-end

Hamil became the regular home end in 2023/24. The atmosphere when Vale fans occupied it for the 2022 Swindon play-off semi-final helped make the case for the change.

Sproson statue as meeting point and memory point

Supporters use the statue as a meeting place as well as a memorial. Protesters gathered there in 2019, bringing concerns about the club's future to the monument of its record appearance-maker.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Vale Park

Food & drink

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

Vale Park sits in Burslem, with useful stadium catering but a more restricted pub picture for visiting supporters than older guides suggest. Current guidance puts away fans in the Bycars Stand, where an away fan zone and kiosks sell drinks, snacks and hot food. For a pre-match pint outside the ground, Port Vale currently points visitors to the White Horse in Tunstall, while a September 2026 away guide also recommends the Green Star.

Food and drink around the ground

Central Burslem needs caution: the Bulls Head is open and Visit Stoke still advertises it to home and away fans, but newer football guidance treats Burslem-centre pubs as home-only, so check the fixture-day position. For home supporters, the Holdcroft Motor Group Fanzone is the main family-oriented hub with food and entertainment, while Tommy Cheadle’s is officially home-only. Nearby daytime food includes Staffordshire oatcakes on Hamil Road.

Rail arrivals should plan their pub or food stop before committing to the ground area rather than relying on older Burslem pub advice.

White Horse

This is the strongest currently evidenced off-site pub option for visiting supporters. Port Vale’s own first-visit information says the White Horse welcomes away supporters, while the current local CAMRA listing confirms the pub is open, family-friendly and set up for televised sport.

Current CAMRA information lists food service on Sundays rather than as a normal Saturday offer, so do not rely on it for a Saturday pre-match meal. No current first-party rule on away colours was found.

Green Star

The Green Star is a verified-open Craft Union pub in Smallthorne. A Port Vale away-day guide checked in September 2026 directs visiting supporters here as one of the current alternatives to Burslem-centre pubs, and local CAMRA information lists meal service.

The away-supporter recommendation comes from a current independent football guide rather than a venue or club admission statement. Fixture restrictions and away-colours policy therefore remain unverified.

Vale Park Away Fan Zone

The away fan zone is the most dependable matchday food-and-drink option once visiting supporters enter the Bycars Stand. Recent visiting-club guidance says it sells alcohol, snacks and hot food, while current 2026 away guidance still identifies the away-end facilities as a visiting option. Supporter reports describe it as small but functional.

This is inside the visiting section after the turnstiles, not a general pre-ground pub stop. Recent visiting guidance says the exact offer can change from match to match.

Holdcroft Motor Group Fanzone

This is Port Vale’s main home-side pre-match hub. For 2026/27 it carries the Holdcroft Motor Group name, and current club material places the Family Stand beside the fanzone and describes music, food and entertainment from pre-match into the game. Recent visiting guidance treats the fanzone as predominantly a home-supporter area rather than a dependable away option.

Families

  • home supporters with children
  • supporters wanting hot food and entertainment before kick-off

Older club and visiting pages may still call this the University of Staffordshire or Staffordshire University Fan Zone. Away access should be treated as fixture-dependent and checked against match-specific guidance.

Tommy Cheadle's

Tommy Cheadle’s remains Port Vale’s stadium-side home pub, but the current club guide is clear that it welcomes home supporters only on matchdays. It is therefore useful home-supporter intelligence but should not be surfaced as an away recommendation.

Historic fixture-specific guides show that away access has occurred in the past, but that is not current proof. The current Port Vale first-time guide should take precedence unless a future match-specific notice says otherwise.

The Bulls Head

The Bulls Head is still open and remains a well-known Burslem football pub, but its current away-fan position is conflicted. Visit Stoke still says it welcomes home and away supporters on Vale home Saturdays, while an away-day guide checked on 11 September 2026 says Burslem-centre pubs are currently home-only. Supporter reports add evidence of changing practice rather than resolving it.

Treat this as fixture-dependent and verify directly before recommending it to away supporters. A 2025 Port Vale forum reply suggested visiting supporters cover away shirts, while the supplied Oxford report from March 2024 described mixed home/away admission and an outdoor barbecue; neither is sufficient to establish the current rule.

Hamil Oatcakes & Snacks

Hamil Oatcakes is a useful local-food lead on Hamil Road rather than a football pub. Visit Stoke lists it as a traditional Staffordshire oatcake shop close to Port Vale, and a current business directory lists Saturday daytime opening. A recent business-sale listing means the exact ownership and hours are worth checking before publication.

The current directory listing gives Saturday hours of 07:00-13:30, so it is an early food stop rather than a late pre-kick-off option for a standard afternoon fixture. No football-specific colours or supporter-admission policy has been found.

Worth considering for a proper sit-down meal after the football, particularly if you are staying locally. The kitchen stresses food cooked fresh rather than fast service, so it is not a sensible pre-match plan for a lunchtime kick-off.

Accessibility

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

Accessible arrangements should be agreed with Port Vale before travelling, rather than relying on a normal car park booking or the final uphill walk. Level Playing Field's club-supplied information identifies two away accessible parking bays and designated drop-off arrangements booked through the club store, plus three wheelchair-user places with carer seats. The dedicated accessible stand is a separate area rather than standard Bycars seating.

Accessible journeys

A visiting supporter has reported difficulty obtaining the advertised bays, so confirmation from the club matters more than the published number alone. Stoke-on-Trent railway station has step-free access to all platforms, but Longport's ramps are more awkward, especially platform 1. Neither the full pedestrian route from station to turnstile nor the Dimensions-to-stand route has a verified step-free guarantee.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Vale Park

Before the match

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

Longport is the closest railway station and the simplest option if a train actually suits your route: Port Vale quotes a 25-minute walk to the stadium via Station Street and Newcastle Street, but allow longer to find the Bycars visiting turnstiles. Services and connections at Longport are more limited than at Stoke-on-Trent.

White Horse

This is the strongest currently evidenced off-site pub option for visiting supporters. Port Vale’s own first-visit information says the White Horse welcomes away supporters, while the current local CAMRA listing confirms the pub is open, family-friendly and set up for televised sport.

  • away supporters wanting a pub before the match
  • families wanting a pub setting
  • watching an early televised match

Current CAMRA information lists food service on Sundays rather than as a normal Saturday offer, so do not rely on it for a Saturday pre-match meal. No current first-party rule on away colours was found.

Green Star

The Green Star is a verified-open Craft Union pub in Smallthorne. A Port Vale away-day guide checked in September 2026 directs visiting supporters here as one of the current alternatives to Burslem-centre pubs, and local CAMRA information lists meal service.

  • away supporters wanting an alternative to central Burslem
  • supporters wanting live sport before kick-off

The away-supporter recommendation comes from a current independent football guide rather than a venue or club admission statement. Fixture restrictions and away-colours policy therefore remain unverified.

Vale Park Away Fan Zone

The away fan zone is the most dependable matchday food-and-drink option once visiting supporters enter the Bycars Stand. Recent visiting-club guidance says it sells alcohol, snacks and hot food, while current 2026 away guidance still identifies the away-end facilities as a visiting option. Supporter reports describe it as small but functional.

  • away supporters wanting food or a drink after entering the ground
  • visitors avoiding uncertain town-centre pub rules

  • real-ale drinkers only after checking fixture-day away admission

Where it is
157 Hamil Road, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, ST6 1AP
Football colours
Colours policy not confirmed
  • supporters wanting a local Staffordshire food stop before an afternoon match
  • breakfast or early lunch when opening hours fit

The current directory listing gives Saturday hours of 07:00-13:30, so it is an early food stop rather than a late pre-kick-off option for a standard afternoon fixture. No football-specific colours or supporter-admission policy has been found.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Stoke is the mainline arrival point for many longer-distance fans, but is around four miles from Vale Park; take a taxi or travel onwards towards Burslem by bus rather than setting off on foot. There is no Underground or tram to the ground. Check the return train before booking, especially for an evening game or a cup tie that could run late.

Nearest useful rail station
Longport; club estimates 25 minutes on foot to Vale Park, not independently timed to Bycars entrance
Longport walking route
Station Street, then Newcastle Street into Burslem; continue towards Hamil Road and follow current away-end signs
Intercity arrival station
Stoke-on-Trent; onward bus or taxi required for most supporters
Stoke-on-Trent station step-free access
Yes
Longport platform access
Category B: steep ramp and absent lowered kerbs can complicate platform 1 access; get assistance advice

No

Station to ground & away entrance

Away supporters now use the Bycars Stand, not the old Hamil Road away end. Check the gate on your ticket and head for the visiting side, following signage and stewards rather than an old ground guide. The club directs visiting cars and coaches to Dimensions Leisure Centre, ST6 4ET. Its older visiting guide calls the signed walk five minutes; the fuller first-time guide allows ten, which is the more useful planning margin.

From Longport, walk uphill along Station Street and Newcastle Street into Burslem, then follow the signed approach to Bycars rather than assuming Hamil Road's home entrance is yours. Allow extra time at busy fixtures.

Buses & local travel

There is no bus stop at the turnstiles. Buses serve Burslem town centre and High Lane, leaving a final walk to Vale Park; check the exact stop and route against the operator's latest timetable. The useful hub for an overnight visitor is Hanley Bus Station, with routes through Burslem. Current First Bus information identifies routes 38 and 39 serving the Burslem corridor, although their circular routings mean direction matters.

From Stoke-on-Trent station, a taxi is the straightforward option, or use a bus towards Hanley and change for Burslem after checking connections. Do not rely on old away guides that quote 20/21 or 7-series buses as through services to Burslem. Evening, Sunday and November timetable changes deserve particular care.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Vale Park

Parking

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

For a normal Saturday league match, booking is advisable. Free on-street parking exists according to recent local fan experience, particularly in the vicinity of Haywood Hospital, but no specific unrestricted side or length of road has been established from the council's legal orders; do not depend on it. The terraced roads close to Vale Park are competitive and the away entrance is now Bycars.

Parking & park-and-ride

The dependable away choice is pre-booked Dimensions Leisure Centre (ST6 4ET), with a signed, stewarded walk of roughly five to ten minutes. The club also lists Haywood Academy and Staffordshire Lads & Dads as fixture-dependent managed locations, but check whether the booking permits visiting fans. The BigParking link now redirects to JustPark, which shows the chosen event, venue and booking price; an old £10 quotation is not a confirmed 2026 tariff.

An independently useful Saturday fallback is the council's Chapel Lane car park (ST6 2AB): 61 spaces, £5.50 for the published all-day tariff, and a walk through Burslem towards the Bycars side. Nearby pay-and-display on Moorland Road, Market Place, Swan Square and Chapel Lane has published Saturday daytime tariffs only up to three hours, too short to assume you can leave a car for the whole game.

Sunday is different: the council explicitly lists free Sunday parking at Chapel Lane, and at designated on-street bays on Moorland Road, Swan Square, Chapel Lane and other central streets. These are limited spaces, not a right to park anywhere on those roads; check bay signs and fixture controls. Arrive early, ideally parked around 75–90 minutes before kick-off.

A practical 3pm visit can occupy a parking space from 1.30pm to about 5.30pm, or four hours once walking, getting seated, the full match and exit are included. Supermarket, hospital and retail car parks are not unrestricted supporter parking; no general matchday permission or adequate stay has been verified. Expect slow exits near the ground and keep Chapel Lane or a confirmed private booking as a fallback rather than circling housing streets near kick-off.

Driving & road restrictions

Vale Park is on Hamil Road in Burslem, north Stoke-on-Trent. For visitors arriving by motorway, Port Vale directs traffic from the M6 via the A500, the Tunstall/A527 turn-off, Newcastle Street and Moorland Road. For away parking, however, programme your sat-nav to Dimensions Leisure Centre, ST6 4ET, not the stadium postcode ST6 1AW: the Hamil Road stand and former away parking area are for home fans.

Roads and access arrangements can be managed differently for particular fixtures. A past match notice closed Driveway A until the Bycars Lane crowd dispersed; it is an example of a fixture-specific measure, not proof of a standing closure at every home game.

Worth knowing

Accrington Stanley at Port Vale

Allow a little time to look around Vale Park. The ground's size recalls its post-war ambitions, the Railway name remembers a lost local line, and the statue and mural show who supporters chose to honour. Knowing that fans have helped maintain the stadium during difficult years adds something to a visit.

Matchday features

Excellent away acoustics. Three dedicated away wheelchair bays. Burslem pub cluster. Supporting-pillar caveat

Away supporters use the Bycars Stand; follow the current visiting-supporter approach.

Around the ground

Burslem is the home to remember. The club's unusual name comes from older local geography, while Vale Park places it firmly in the Mother Town.

The Sproson statue and supporter-photo mural offer a quick introduction to the players and manager fans hold especially dear.

Hamil Road is now the home end, although returning visitors may remember watching from it as away supporters.

The names Hamil, Bycars and Railway all come with memories and local connections. Around Vale Park, a stand name often tells more than where to find a seat.

A detail worth noticing

Sproson's statue introduces visitors to a Burslem-born player whose 837 appearances made him the club's record appearance-maker.

Look closely at the anniversary mural: the large portraits are assembled from individual supporter photographs.

Hamil and Bycars have exchanged home and away roles since the layout described in many older accounts of the ground.

The stadium's scale and position above Burslem recall the ambitious 1950 move onto former clay-working land.

The ground was built on a former clay and fireclay site, linking its location to the industry around Burslem.

Material from the Old Recreation Ground was reused at Vale Park, carrying part of the previous home into the new stadium.

The Hamil Road structure includes roofing and steelwork from Chester City's old Sealand Road ground.

The Railway Stand recalls the Potteries Loop Line that once ran beside the ground.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Longport is the closest railway station and the simplest option if a train actually suits your route: Port Vale quotes a 25-minute walk to the stadium via Station Street and Newcastle Street, but allow longer to find the Bycars visiting turnstiles. Services and connections at Longport are more limited than at Stoke-on-Trent.

Coaches

Away coaches

Organised away coaches are directed to Dimensions Leisure Centre, ST6 4ET, alongside visiting cars and minibuses. A visiting-club supporter liaison guide identifies Dimensions for coach drop-off and collection, followed by a short signed walk to Bycars. Use the coach company's match-specific joining instructions rather than expecting to be dropped at the Hamil Road entrance. For supporters with limited mobility, ask the visiting club and Port Vale about a permitted drop-off arrangement before travel. Any police hold, coach-park exit order or changed collection point for a particular fixture has to come from the clubs or stewards on the day.

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Accessible arrangements should be agreed with Port Vale before travelling, rather than relying on a normal car park booking or the final uphill walk. Level Playing Field's club-supplied information identifies two away accessible parking bays and designated drop-off arrangements booked through the club store, plus three wheelchair-user places with carer seats. The dedicated accessible stand is a separate area rather than standard Bycars seating.

After the match

After the match

Do not plan a tight connection from Vale Park. The stadium empties towards the surrounding Burslem streets, and a booked space protects your parking place, not the time it takes to join the traffic. A customer review on JustPark reports a long wait getting out of the on-site Synectics car park. Some fixtures have specific crowd-segregation measures: Port Vale has previously held Driveway A shut until the Bycars Lane crowd had largely cleared. From Dimensions, follow the instructed route back to the car or coach and allow for stewarded release. From Longport, budget the return walk plus a train-service margin; from Stoke station, add the time to reach Hanley/Burslem or arrange a taxi. Recheck any post-match route changes issued for your opponents.

Post-match queue risk
Potentially significant around stadium roads; one on-site Synectics parking customer reports a long wait to leave
Example police/stewarded restriction
Driveway A closure and release after Bycars crowd clearance announced for one earlier fixture, not a universal rule
Official event car-park closing
One hour after final whistle per club first-time guide; check special fixtures and cup extra time
Recommended buffer before return transport
Leave a generous margin for exit, walk and onward transit; no universal guaranteed duration

Where to stay

Burslem is the easiest area if walking to the match is your priority, but the ground is not beside Stoke-on-Trent's main railway station. For an overnight trip, Hanley gives a more practical combination of city-centre hotels, food and bus/taxi links towards Burslem. Hilton Garden Inn is on Potteries Way near the Cultural Quarter, while DoubleTree is on Festival Way by Etruria; both require an onward journey to Vale Park. Staying near Stoke-on-Trent station suits a late-arriving rail traveller or a very early return train, but it still leaves the matchday transfer. Check your post-match bus and rail connection before choosing an overnight base; avoid assuming a direct service runs late after an evening fixture.

AWAY-DAY OVERVIEW

Read full overview Hide full overview

Vale Park sits in Burslem, with useful stadium catering but a more restricted pub picture for visiting supporters than older guides suggest. Current guidance puts away fans in the Bycars Stand, where an away fan zone and kiosks sell drinks, snacks and hot food. For a pre-match pint outside the ground, Port Vale currently points visitors to the White Horse in Tunstall, while a September 2026 away guide also recommends the Green Star.

MATCHDAY INTELThis is the strongest currently evidenced off-site pub option for visiting supporters. Port Vale’s own first-visit information says the White Horse welcomes away supporters, while the current local CAMRA listing confirms the pub is open, family-friendly and set up for televised sport.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent CAMRA information lists food service on Sundays rather than as a normal Saturday offer, so do not rely on it for a Saturday pre-match meal. No current first-party rule on away colours was found.

MATCHDAY INTELThe Green Star is a verified-open Craft Union pub in Smallthorne. A Port Vale away-day guide checked in September 2026 directs visiting supporters here as one of the current alternatives to Burslem-centre pubs, and local CAMRA information lists meal service.
WORTH KNOWINGThe away-supporter recommendation comes from a current independent football guide rather than a venue or club admission statement. Fixture restrictions and away-colours policy therefore remain unverified.

BEST FORreal-ale drinkers only after checking fixture-day away admission
MATCHDAY INTELThe Bulls Head is still open and remains a well-known Burslem football pub, but its current away-fan position is conflicted. Visit Stoke still says it welcomes home and away supporters on Vale home Saturdays, while an away-day guide checked on 11 September 2026 says Burslem-centre pubs are currently home-only. Supporter reports add evidence of changing practice rather than resolving it.
WORTH KNOWINGTreat this as fixture-dependent and verify directly before recommending it to away supporters. A 2025 Port Vale forum reply suggested visiting supporters cover away shirts, while the supplied Oxford report from March 2024 described mixed home/away admission and an outdoor barbecue; neither is sufficient to establish the current rule.
PUB / BAR

Tommy Cheadle's

Not for away fans
BEST FORhome supporters wanting a pre-match pint beside Vale Park
MATCHDAY INTELTommy Cheadle’s remains Port Vale’s stadium-side home pub, but the current club guide is clear that it welcomes home supporters only on matchdays. It is therefore useful home-supporter intelligence but should not be surfaced as an away recommendation.
WORTH KNOWINGHistoric fixture-specific guides show that away access has occurred in the past, but that is not current proof. The current Port Vale first-time guide should take precedence unless a future match-specific notice says otherwise.
