Research checked 2026-10-15
Use Leeds railway station as your main arrival point. Elland Road has no operating rail or tram stop beside the ground, and Leeds United puts the walk from the city-centre station at about 35–40 minutes.
Plan a stay at Leeds United ↗Head to the main West Stand gates on Elland Road, not the entrances used by home supporters elsewhere around the stadium. Visiting fans occupy the southern part of the John Charles West Stand. The standard away turnstiles are Entrances 1 and 2; Howards Entrance is also used for some lower-tier allocations. Follow the entrance printed on your ticket. If you arrive by the R2 bus, follow stewarded directions towards the south-west corner and the West Stand away entrance. For coach passengers, stewards control the pedestrian route from the designated coach area; do not cut through redevelopment fencing or restricted vehicle routes. The visiting ticket office is beside Entrances 1 and 2 and normally opens 90 minutes before kick-off. The away fan zone is beside the visiting turnstiles and normally opens two hours before kick-off.
Turnstiles: Visiting Fans ↗After the match, allow extra time before trying to drive away from Elland Road. The club closes Elland Road to traffic shortly before full-time and for at least an hour afterwards. Lowfields Road also remains closed until pedestrians have dispersed, and the West Stand away-coach area can be held while coaches are loaded and released. If you used the Stourton or Temple Green football Park & Ride, follow signs behind the North Stand for the ST1 or TG1 return coach. These run on a fill-and-go basis, with the final advertised departure 25 minutes after full-time, so head straight there rather than stopping for a drink. For the city centre, return on the R2 shuttle or walk towards Leeds station, allowing a margin for queues. Drivers using White Rose Office Park may avoid the closest stadium traffic, but should still budget for busy local roads and a full walk back to the car.
Transport and Travel ↗Stay around Leeds station, Granary Wharf or the south-western edge of the city centre if you want an easy football weekend. Leeds station is where most rail arrivals meet, and Sovereign Street nearby has the R2 matchday shuttle to Elland Road.

Compare the stay areas →Use Leeds railway station as your main arrival point. Elland Road has no operating rail or tram stop beside the ground, and Leeds United puts the walk from the city-centre station at about 35–40 minutes. The R2 matchday shuttle from Sovereign Street is usually the simpler final leg, particularly if you are arriving with a group or luggage.
For a walk, leave the station on its south side and head towards Holbeck and Elland Road, allowing extra time for crossings and matchday crowds. Check your return train against the time needed to leave the ground and reach the station; a close connection immediately after full-time is risky.
Do not use the former Cottingley railway station as a planned matchday arrival. The closure has been legally ratified, and the White Rose replacement project has faced delays; neither is a dependable shortcut to the ground.

Use the R2 shuttle from Sovereign Street, outside Caffè Nero near Leeds station, for the most direct public-transport route to Elland Road. It runs on most home matchdays and normally starts two-and-a-half hours before kick-off, with buses back towards the city after the match. Check the boarding location for your fixture: special city events have occasionally moved the stop.
First Bus also operates the R3 matchday service from Thornbury Barracks and Pudsey. The R4 serves Morley after the match only. The published First Bus matchday fare information lists separate special-service tickets, and ordinary MCards and West Yorkshire DayRovers are not accepted.
Ordinary bus routes 51, 52, 55 and 55C serve the Elland Road corridor, with other routes serving Beeston nearby. Stops immediately outside the ground are suspended around kick-off and full-time, so check where your return service is stopping.
Travel with your visiting club’s official coach organiser if you want to be brought close to the away entrance. Leeds United provides a designated away-coach park, but redevelopment has reduced its capacity to 24 coaches. The organiser must reserve a coach space before matchday; unbooked coaches will not be admitted.
Ask your organiser to confirm the approach, exact parking location and departure instructions for your fixture. Stewards direct visiting supporters from the coach area to the controlled West Stand entrance. Coach passengers should return to the same organiser-designated collection point rather than assuming they can cross a restricted road after full-time.
Expect the police or stewards to hold coaches until pedestrians have cleared. The club warns that the West Stand car-park route and surrounding roads can be temporarily closed after the match.
Arrange any accessible parking and visiting wheelchair tickets before travelling. Leeds United has accessible bays in its Grey, Green and Purple car parks, with widened bays in Purple Zone 1. These accessible spaces are free, but must be booked through the club’s advance process; a Blue Badge on its own does not secure matchday entry.
The 17 former Lowfields Road accessible bays are suspended during 2026/27 fixtures and have moved to Purple Zone 1. Check which parking area and walking route suit your actual away seat, and contact Leeds United’s accessibility team or your visiting club before buying travel.
Visiting wheelchair supporters use the ramped Exit W1 gate by the West Stand away turnstiles. Leeds station itself has step-free access to its platforms, but the accessible route from the station to Elland Road and the suitability of any shuttle should be confirmed individually.

Stay around Leeds station, Granary Wharf or the south-western edge of the city centre if you want an easy football weekend. Leeds station is where most rail arrivals meet, and Sovereign Street nearby has the R2 matchday shuttle to Elland Road. You will also have a much better choice of food and pubs than immediately around the stadium. For a quieter football-first compromise, look towards Holbeck or Sweet Street, provided your hotel has a sensible pedestrian route back. If your priority is the evening after the game, Boar Lane, Lower Briggate and Call Lane are more convenient, although the journey to the ground is longer. Staying by Elland Road can make sense for drivers who value stadium proximity above nightlife, but check the hotel’s own parking permissions and matchday access. If you have an early train or a late kick-off, a room within walking distance of Leeds station is the simpler choice.
Transport and Travel ↗For a one-night football trip, south-central Leeds around Sweet Street/Granary Wharf is the most balanced base: it is noticeably closer to Elland Road than the northern and eastern parts of the centre, while Leeds station and the main food-and-drink areas remain reachable on foot. Staying right by the ground only makes more sense when stadium proximity, parking or a quick post-match return outweighs nightlife.
Call Lane is one of Leeds' liveliest bar streets; Merrion Street and Greek Street are also established evening clusters. For a supporter who wants food and drinks after the match, the Boar Lane/Lower Briggate/Call Lane side of the centre gives far more choice than the Elland Road hotel area.
Leeds railway station is a strong overnight anchor because it is central, close to Boar Lane and Granary Wharf, and near the Sovereign Street area used by the R2 Elland Road matchday shuttle. Hotels immediately around the station are less convenient for the ground than the Gelderd Road Premier Inn, but much stronger for arrival, departure and the post-match evening.
