The Ship Leopard Hotel - No Children
The Hard / Portsmouth Harbour
Our overall pick for adults who want the football and a proper overnight stay rather than just the shortest possible walk. It is a small independent directly opposite Portsmouth Harbour transport links, a few minutes from Gunwharf Quays, and its recent verified-review record is materially stronger than the larger central chains checked.
- Excellent post-match position opposite Portsmouth Harbour station and beside The Hard, with Gunwharf Quays close by.
- Recent verified reviews repeatedly praise cleanliness, staff, breakfast and location.
Approximate Fratton Park-to-Portsmouth Harbour walking distance/time. The practical football route is Fratton station to Portsmouth Harbour, then a very short walk across The Hard; taxi is also straightforward.
Adults only: the hotel does not accept children, so it cannot be the universal recommendation for family trips.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
ibis budget Portsmouth
Fratton / Pompey Centre
The obvious choice when 'closest practical' really means closest. It is across the road from the Fratton Park complex and the hotel itself markets the ground as about a three-minute walk away. The compromise is equally clear: this is a basic budget hotel in a retail/stadium setting, not the part of Portsmouth most supporters would choose for a full evening out.
- About a three-minute walk from Fratton Park, so there is virtually no post-match transport problem.
- Consistently the lowest-priced of the three primary choices on the normal sample dates.
Hotel and third-party mapping sources consistently describe Fratton Park as roughly a three-minute walk away.
Rooms and facilities are deliberately basic; this is a sleep-near-the-ground pick rather than a destination hotel.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Holiday Inn Express Portsmouth - Gunwharf Quays
Gunwharf Quays / Portsmouth Harbour
Best for supporters who want the easiest night out after the match. The hotel is inside Gunwharf Quays, so bars, restaurants and late-evening options are outside the door, while Portsmouth Harbour station keeps the Fratton return workable. Breakfast is included.
- Inside Gunwharf Quays, the clearest large post-match cluster of bars and restaurants.
- Portsmouth Harbour station is only a short walk away, making the rail connection to/from Fratton practical.
Approximate Gunwharf Quays-to-Fratton Park walking distance/time. Direct rail and bus options make the location more practical than the raw walking distance suggests.
The normal baseline is materially dearer than ibis budget Portsmouth.

Travel & parking

Parking
Driving & road restrictions
Put your booked car park's own postcode into the sat-nav, not just Fratton Park, PO4 8RA. Portsmouth FC advises drivers from the west to use the M27/A27 then the A2030 towards Fratton. If you have booked its Anson Road car park, use PO4 8SX and keep your parking e-ticket ready for the steward.
Do not rely on driving around the stadium looking for a final space. Portsmouth City Council applies matchday waiting restrictions to parts of eleven surrounding roads from two and a half hours before kick-off until one hour after full-time. Check the variable signs and allow for congested approaches, especially at a sell-out.
- Stadium postcode
- PO4 8RA, Frogmore Road
- Club parking postcode
- PO4 8SX, Anson Road; pre-booking required
- Approach from west/Midlands
- M27 eastbound to A27, then A2030 towards Southsea/Fratton
- Matchday restrictions window
- From two and a half hours before kick-off until one hour after the match
- Matchday controlled roads
- Alverstone, Anson, Apsley, Carisbrooke, Fratton Way, Frogmore, Goldsmith Avenue, Milton Lane, Rodney, Ruskin and Specks Lane (affected signed sections)
- Parking enforcement
- PCN £70, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days; removal possible
Parking & park-and-ride
Book parking if you are driving to Fratton Park. Free on-street spaces are not a dependable matchday plan: Portsmouth enforces additional restrictions around the ground, and the Alverstone Road permit zone normally allows visitors just one hour. No named unrestricted stretch was verified.
For the shortest walk, book Portsmouth FC's car park on Anson Road, PO4 8SX. Its away guide quotes £12 per car and says you must buy a parking e-ticket in advance. Do not turn up expecting to pay at the gate.
Milton Cross School on Milton Road is another authorised option. The club's guide quotes £6, with parking opening two hours before kick-off and spaces allocated first come, first served. It is about a 15-minute walk to the away end. Confirm the fixture charge and opening.
If those are full, Fratton station's APCOA car park on Selbourne Terrace is a public fallback, although it has only 66 spaces. The operator currently advertises £6.10 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. Pre-booked Asda parking at Somers Road North is another option; check the walking route.
Allow at least four hours for parking, both walks, your pre-match arrival and the game. Aim to arrive at least 90 minutes early. Do not use Tesco Fratton or other customer car parks just because you are visiting a nearby shop: the football stay is longer than many customer limits.
On evenings and Sundays, do not assume restrictions have ended. The council's matchday signs override normal expectations during the stated match window, and permit-zone limits can operate every day. A booked space farther from Rodney Road may help at full-time.
- Parking verdict
- Booking advisable; no legally verified nearby free on-street section suitable for a full matchday stay
- Legal restrictions — Alverstone Road zone
- GB zone: generally one-hour limited waiting, no return for two hours; matchday restrictions may also apply and override permits in signed bays
- Legal restrictions — Priory Crescent
- Specified east/south-side bays allow four-hour limited waiting, no return within four hours; not a dependable full-match recommendation and section signs must be checked
- Legal restrictions — Fratton GA zone
- Named GA streets are within a resident parking scheme; not a blanket free parking option
- Legal restrictions — matchday streets
- Eleven affected roads listed by council, controlled from 2.5h pre-kick-off to 1h after the game; £70 PCN possible
- Matchday availability — area
- Close-in parking is limited; away guide and visitor reports describe pressure and congestion; no space guaranteed
- Walk — Anson Road
- Short approach within stadium complex; exact distance to allocated away turnstile not confirmed
- Walk — Milton Cross School
- Approximately 15 minutes to the away end
- Walk — Fratton station parking
- Use the same Fratton station-to-stadium route; roughly seven minutes to stadium vicinity, allow more to the away end
- Walk — authorised Asda parking
- User report describes about 20 minutes through back streets; not an operator-verified walking time
- Arrive by — Milton Cross School
- Car park opens two hours before kick-off; arrive early because spaces are first come, first served
- Arrive by — general
- Allow at least 90 minutes before kick-off as a planning margin, not a published capacity guarantee
- Paid fallback — Anson Road
- £12 per car per club away guide; valid Blue Badge £6; advance e-ticket required
- Paid fallback — Milton Cross School
- Club away guide quotes £6 on-the-day with limited spaces; rate and opening to be reconfirmed for fixture
- Paid fallback — Fratton station
- APCOA: 66 spaces, open 24 hours, £6.10 Saturday/Sunday/bank holiday daily tariff; no guarantee of vacancy
- Paid fallback — Asda Bridge Shopping Centre
- Book separately through JustPark at Somers Road North, PO1 1SL; 24-hour access and number plate registration required
- Paid fallback — private driveway
- An off-street Orchard Road PO4 0AB listing advertises football parking and about eight-minute walk; book for the full visit and check access rules
- Booking recommendation
- Pre-book club Anson Road or a legitimate private space when predictable arrival matters; school is a first-come alternative
- Supermarket permission/time limit
- Tesco Fratton Extra lists signed customer stay limits but does not confirm permission for football parking; do not recommend unauthorised use
- Retail booked exception
- Asda Portsmouth is authorised for extended stay only through an appropriate JustPark booking with matching registration
- Total dwell time
- Plan at least four hours from arrival to departure; longer for meals, delays or extra time
- After the match
- Expect controlled roads and delays near the ground; use booked departure route or walk back to public parking
- Park-and-ride caveat
- Tipner PR1 serves the city centre/The Hard and is not a direct Fratton Park shuttle; check onward transfer and end time

Matchday advice: Book parking if you are driving to Fratton Park. Free on-street spaces are not a dependable matchday plan: Portsmouth enforces additional restrictions around the ground, and the Alverstone Road permit zone normally allows visitors just one hour.
Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Use Fratton station for the easiest railway journey to Fratton Park. Portsmouth FC's away guide puts the walk at about seven minutes after leaving towards Goldsmith Avenue; allow a little longer for the Milton End and the pre-match crowd. Trains serve Fratton directly, so there is no need to go via Portsmouth Harbour if your service calls here.
If your train stops at Portsmouth & Southsea rather than Fratton, change to a suitable connecting train or allow for an onward local journey. Fratton station has step-free access to every platform and lifts, but check lift availability and your onward walking route if you need accessible travel.
- Best arrival station
- Fratton (FTN), Selbourne Terrace, PO1 5AW
- Ground walking time
- Approximately seven minutes along the club route to the stadium perimeter; allow longer to find the Milton End
- Fratton step-free station access
- National Rail category A; lifts and staff assistance listed
- Rail alternative
- Portsmouth & Southsea; continue to Fratton by connecting service or local onward travel
- Portsmouth Harbour
- Not the nearest station; Fratton is the recommended arrival
- Rail travel verification
- Check your service and any engineering works for the actual fixture
Station to ground & away entrance
Head for the Milton End, at the eastern end of Fratton Park, rather than joining the home entrances on Frogmore Road. From Fratton station, use the Goldsmith Avenue exit described in Portsmouth's away guide, turn left and follow the stadium signs. Your ticket should confirm the turnstile you need.
If you arrive by coach, Rodney Road is the club's stated visiting-supporter drop-off point, close to the away end. The Milton End opens around 90 minutes before kick-off according to the club guide. Access needs are different for wheelchair users, so arrange your arrival route with the club beforehand.
- Away allocation
- Milton End / East Stand
- Away turnstiles
- Use the gate shown on the match ticket; no universally fixed number confirmed
- Away approach from train
- Platform 1 side, then footbridge towards Goldsmith Avenue and follow stadium signs
- Coach arrival approach
- Rodney Road, PO4 8SP, short walk to Milton End
- Typical away turnstile opening

Coaches
Away coaches
If you are on an organised away coach, follow the operator's instructions for Rodney Road, PO4 8SP. Portsmouth's own away guide names it as the arrival point, a short walk from the Milton End turnstiles. Coaches then park elsewhere rather than waiting outside the ground.
The same guide says coaches return to the drop-off area shortly after the final whistle for collection. Agree the precise meeting point and any security instructions with your organiser, especially if road controls change for a larger match. Anyone needing assistance should contact Portsmouth in the week before travelling.
- Away coach drop-off
- Rodney Road, PO4 8SP
- Away coach pick-up
- Return to the Rodney Road drop-off point, subject to fixture instructions
- Coach between drop-off and collection

Buses
Buses & local travel
For most travelling supporters, walking from Fratton station is simpler than finding a bus for the last few streets. First Bus routes 1 and 2 serve the wider Fratton area, but neither should be assumed to take you directly to the Milton End. Check the correct stop and return direction on your matchday.
Portsmouth Park and Ride at Tipner Lane can keep your car away from the stadium roads, but the regular PR1 runs towards the city centre and The Hard, not Fratton Park. You would still need another connection to Fratton, and its published finish makes it unsuitable as an easy return after some evening kick-offs.
- Local buses
- First Bus services 1 and 2 operate near the ground; check stop and return direction
- Park and ride site
- Tipner Lane, PO2 8AN, by M275 junction 1
- Regular park-and-ride route
- PR1 runs to the city centre and The Hard; not a direct stadium shuttle
- Park-and-ride day fare
- £5 ticket covers up to five people travelling together
- PR1 service limitation
- Published service runs to early evening; check last departure and connecting travel for night fixtures
- Park-and-ride height limit
- 2.1 metres
Accessibility
Accessible journeys
Arrange accessible match tickets and parking with Portsmouth or your visiting club before you travel. The official away guide says wheelchair places are included in the visiting allocation, while the club's accessible parking is pre-booked via Anson Road. The guide quotes £6 for parking with a valid Blue Badge, subject to availability.
Fratton station offers step-free access and lifts, but that does not guarantee a step-free stadium entrance. The Milton End has stepped seating, and accessibility records warn that visiting wheelchair positions may use a different entrance from the usual away turnstiles. Contact dslo@pompeyfc.co.uk to confirm your precise entrance, viewing position and any suitable drop-off.
- Accessible ticket arrangements
- Wheelchair places are distributed through the away allocation; confirm with visiting club and Portsmouth
- Accessible club car park

After the match
After the match
If you are travelling by train, walk back to Fratton station rather than relying on a taxi collection close to the Milton End. The station is nearby, but leave extra time for crowds and check the last sensible connection before kick-off, especially for a midweek game.
If you are driving, give the streets around Rodney Road and Anson Road time to clear. The council's additional parking controls last until an hour after the game, and local supporters describe slow traffic. Drivers parked at a reserved space farther from the stadium should follow the host's access instructions instead of taking a shortcut through controlled roads.
- Rail return
- Fratton station, via Goldsmith Avenue route in reverse
- Road control after full time
- Additional matchday parking restrictions last one hour after the final whistle
- Away coach collection
- Return to Rodney Road after the match as organised by coach operator
- Road congestion evidence
- November 2025 visiting-fan discussion reports poor parking and slow exit; anecdotal, not quantified
- Recommended buffer
- Check return departure in advance and allow extra walking and queue time; no fixed post-match queue time verified
Where to stay
Stay near Fratton if the match is the main reason for the trip. Ibis budget Portsmouth on Fratton Way is next to the stadium and close to Fratton station, so you can walk to the Milton End without arranging taxis or matchday parking. It is the straightforward choice for an early start or a late finish.
For a longer weekend, Portsmouth city centre, Gunwharf Quays or Southsea offer more eating, drinking and sightseeing. You would then travel back to Fratton by rail or bus rather than staying beside the ground. Check hotel parking and the final service before booking, especially after an evening fixture.
- Football-first area
- Fratton / Fratton Way around the station and ground
- Ground-side hotel
- Ibis budget Portsmouth, Fratton Way PO4 8SL, close to stadium and station

Fratton is the station to use for a straight in-and-out Portsmouth away day: the club’s route puts Fratton Park about seven minutes away, with visitors entering the Milton End. For a pub, the Good Companion is still the official away default and a ten-minute walk from the ground; Artillery Arms is the more local alternative with current CAMRA evidence of away admission. Train arrivals who want food first can use Spud Fusion opposite the station footbridge, while Staggeringly Good, close to the Milton End side, combines craft beer with Bear Bones barbecue but can impose fixture-specific restrictions. Portsmouth & Southsea works better for a city-centre meet: the Dockyard on Guildhall Walk explicitly courts travelling away crowds. Staying over, ibis Budget is the football-first option beside Fratton Park; Southsea is better for independent food and an evening out. The Fanzone accepts visiting supporters, but several close home pubs need care. Away colours are rarely covered by published policies, and derby restrictions can override normal practice.

Food & quick bites
Where to grab a bite, have a proper meal or try the local matchday favourite.
Portsmouth FC Fanzone
Official ground-side option behind the Fratton End, open to supporters in the current away guide and useful for families. It works when you want to reach the stadium early rather than gamble on a local pub.
Spud Fusion
Best food-first move straight off the train. Spud Fusion sits opposite the Fratton station footbridge and serves classic and loaded jacket potatoes seven days a week; a recent Pompey supporter specifically recommended it for pre-match food.
Baffled Coffee
For a calmer daytime feed, Baffled on Fawcett Road does fresh brunch, sandwiches, cakes and specials. A current Pompey supporter recommends it for a pre-match sandwich; it suits coffee-and-food groups better than a sing-song pub.
Outside-In Food Court
An independent-food alternative for Portsmouth & Southsea arrivals. Outside-In is on the city-centre/Southsea fringe with rotating street-food traders and a bar, giving groups more choice than a single takeaway before moving on to Fratton.
Pie & Vinyl
Southsea overnight pick rather than a dash from Fratton. The record-shop café’s homemade Portsea Island pies make it worth the detour: the Porksea Islander combines pulled pork, sticky barbecue sauce, onions and crackling.
