FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW WALSALL TO SALFORD CITY

This fixture is still months away, on 23 January. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Walsall are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Recent results give Walsall nine points from a possible fifteen, with two wins and three draws in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, Salford City have taken fifteen points from a possible fifteen: five wins. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Walsall are 4th in League Two after 11 league games, with 19 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion and play-off contenders.

Salford City are 1st in League Two after 12 league games, with 25 points. They started the campaign regarded as promotion favourites.

The destination is AIG Stadium in Salford. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. Base yourself around Manchester Victoria / Cathedral Quarter unless being able to walk to the ground matters more than having a proper evening out. Maldron Cathedral Quarter is the strongest balance of transport, hotel quality and value; Motel One Royal Exchange is better if the night out is the priority. Woodthorpe is the practical near-ground exception. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

For Walsall supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Maldron Hotel Manchester Central Cathedral Quarter

Maldron Hotel Manchester Central Cathedral Quarter

Cathedral Quarter / Chapel Street, Salford edge of Manchester city centre

The best all-round football-trip base. It is on the Salford side of the centre, close to Victoria/Shudehill for the 97/98 buses, but still central enough for proper food and drinks after the match. Current Booking.com evidence is strong on cleanliness, comfort, staff and location, and its quieter-date pricing is competitive for a modern four-star hotel.

  • Useful position between Salford and Manchester city centre rather than being stranded by the ground.
  • Close to Manchester Victoria and Shudehill for the simplest public-transport run to Moor Lane.
The match journey

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Treat this as a bus/taxi base: 97/98 from Shudehill stop near the stadium, then about an eight-minute walk.

The trade-off

It is not walk-to-the-turnstile accommodation; use the bus or a taxi.

WHY STAY HERE?

Maldron Hotel Manchester Central Cathedral Quarter

Cathedral Quarter / Chapel Street, Salford edge of Manchester city centre

Our view

The best all-round football-trip base. It is on the Salford side of the centre, close to Victoria/Shudehill for the 97/98 buses, but still central enough for proper food and drinks after the match. Current Booking.com evidence is strong on cleanliness, comfort, staff and location, and its quieter-date pricing is competitive for a modern four-star hotel.

Why it suits this trip

  • Useful position between Salford and Manchester city centre rather than being stranded by the ground.
  • Close to Manchester Victoria and Shudehill for the simplest public-transport run to Moor Lane.
  • Booking.com score checked at 8.9/10 from more than 7,000 reviews, with particularly strong cleanliness and location sub-scores.
  • Restaurant, bar and gym make it more complete than the budget chains if the stay is more than simply somewhere to sleep.
  • Representative baseline was about £91 midweek and £130 at weekends, before major event spikes.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Treat this as a bus/taxi base: 97/98 from Shudehill stop near the stadium, then about an eight-minute walk.

Pubs and the evening

Central Manchester bars, pubs, restaurants and late food are walkable; much stronger post-match choice than Kersal.

Arriving by train

The hotel markets itself as minutes from Manchester Victoria; this is the most useful mainline station area for the Salford City trip.

The trade-offs

  • It is not walk-to-the-turnstile accommodation; use the bus or a taxi.
  • Manchester event nights can push the rate sharply above its normal baseline.
  • Parking is not the main strength of this choice; public transport suits it better.

Research price context

Representative sampled baseline: roughly £75–£110 midweek and £105–£165 at weekends; Manchester event dates can go much higher.

Woodthorpe Hotel

Woodthorpe Hotel

Prestwich / Bury Old Road

The closest practical hotel-style stay now that Fairways Lodge has gone. It is a historic Joseph Holt pub with just three en-suite rooms, free parking, food and a bar, and it is close enough to walk to the Peninsula Stadium. That convenience is real, but so are the limitations: tiny inventory, weaker nightlife than the city centre and a thinner review base.

  • FootyGrounds lists it about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes on foot from the Peninsula Stadium.
  • The Joseph Holt site confirms three en-suite rooms, a pub/restaurant and free parking.
The match journey

Supporter-ground mapping lists Woodthorpe at about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes' walk from the stadium.

The trade-off

Only three rooms are advertised by the operator, so availability can disappear quickly.

Why it suits this trip

  • FootyGrounds lists it about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes on foot from the Peninsula Stadium.
  • The Joseph Holt site confirms three en-suite rooms, a pub/restaurant and free parking.
  • Booking.com currently scores it 8.1/10 from more than 200 reviews.
  • A sensible choice for drivers or supporters who prioritise walking to the ground over a Manchester night out.

Getting to the ground

Supporter-ground mapping lists Woodthorpe at about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes' walk from the stadium.

Pubs and the evening

You have the Woodthorpe pub itself and Prestwich nearby, but this is not the pick for a full central-Manchester night out.

Arriving by train

Better for driving or a local tram/taxi combination than for walking straight from a mainline station.

The trade-offs

  • Only three rooms are advertised by the operator, so availability can disappear quickly.
  • Prestwich is not the same post-match nightlife proposition as central Manchester.
  • Tripadvisor's hotel-specific accommodation review sample is small and includes a recent complaint about management/service at a function.

Research price context

Representative sampled baseline: around £90–£100 midweek and £100–£130 on sampled Friday/weekend nights.

Best if the hotel is part of the night out rather than just the match logistics. Cross Street puts you between the Royal Exchange, Deansgate, Printworks and the Northern Quarter, while Victoria/Shudehill are still close enough for the Moor Lane bus. The hotel is consistently praised for cleanliness, staff and location, but rooms are deliberately compact.

  • Representative baseline was about £90 midweek and £119 at weekends on the selected non-match samples.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Use Shudehill's 97/98 bus or a taxi rather than walking.

Pubs and the evening

This is the strongest of the primary picks for continuing the evening on foot after returning from the match.

Arriving by train

Victoria and Shudehill are walkable; the property is central enough to work well for both rail arrival and the stadium bus.

The trade-offs

  • Rooms are frequently described as small/compact.
  • Event-night dynamic pricing can be severe and can destroy the normal value proposition.
  • No meaningful advantage over Maldron for the match journey itself; this wins on the evening location.

Research price context

Representative sampled baseline: roughly £65–£115 midweek and £105–£140 at weekends; large event spikes are a known risk.

What to expect at Salford City

All the key information for Walsall supporters heading to AIG Stadium — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

#WalsallFC#Saddlers#COYS
YOUR AWAY DAY · AIG Stadium

The ground

Walsall at Salford City

Compact, low-slung and close to the pitch. The rebuild removed much of the literal old fabric, but the ground's dimensions, terraces and residential Kersal setting keep it from feeling like a generic out-of-town development.

Views from the away section

Away terrace gives a close standing view; seated/accessible options are separate.

Why the ground matters

Moor Lane holds memories of tiny crowds, makeshift facilities and the old stand on the site of today's compact EFL ground. Supporters continue to use the Moor Lane name as sponsorship has changed from Peninsula Stadium to AIG Stadium.

Stand features

A covered standing section is normally used for away supporters, with adjacent seating depending on allocation. Exact segregation and allocation are changeable.

The post-2017 ground is visually uniform and compact, with spectators close enough to the pitch for noise to carry quickly.

Ground guides note a visible slope, a small physical quirk easy to miss in television coverage.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Walsall at Salford City

Terracing and close proximity create a lively small-ground atmosphere.

From the supporters

Salford’s compact covered away terrace has surprisingly effective acoustics for its size; the prefabricated rear panels also let a modest visiting following create more noise than the raw capacity might suggest.

Supporter and community activity around Buck's Bar

Foundation 92 has organised family and community activity and mascot appearances at the matchday hub. Provision varies between fixtures.

YOUR AWAY DAY · AIG Stadium

Food & drink

Walsall at Salford City

Salford City play at Moor Lane, now branded the AIG Stadium, in a residential part of Kersal where you cannot rely on a pub beside the turnstiles. Manchester Victoria is the practical rail arrival: meet around NOMA or the Northern Quarter, then use the 93 or 97/98 bus north rather than walking three miles. Away supporters enter Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane for the East Terrace and allocated North Stand seats.

Food and drink around the ground

For a pint nearer the ground, the community-owned Star Inn is the most characterful lead; the food-serving Friendship Inn is a more straightforward group choice. Both need a match-specific check on away colours. For food, Lupo’s Italian café rewards a planned detour, while Babs’ Café supplies burgers, pies and hot dogs inside the away enclosure. Mackie Mayor works well for mixed groups eating around Victoria.

Prestwich pubs and chippies make more sense if staying north; the Quays are not a convenient ground-side base. The home bars are not an away-pub fallback, and kick-off times can change opening and admission arrangements.

Accessibility

Walsall at Salford City

Arrange accessible tickets and the exact viewing position with Salford City before travelling. The usual away entrance is Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane, and the club describes a ramp down into the away area. However, recent wheelchair-user reviews report difficulties with away-end sightlines and seating arrangements. Level Playing Field currently lists disability liaison contact Andrew Giblin on 07808 254 646 or andy.giblin@salfordcityfc.co.uk.

Accessible journeys

Ask about your companion's seat, the route to the accessible toilet, and whether any viewing position is in a home area. Do not assume that an older description of North Stand wheelchair bays guarantees your exact allocation. There is no general stadium car park. Salford states Blue Badge holders may park in the matchday permit zone for up to three hours, with badge and clock correctly displayed.

That can be too short for a complete visit, so agree a lawful drop-off and parking plan in advance.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Check the temporary Victoria-area bus diversion before travelling. Heaton Park and Prestwich are Metrolink alternatives, but neither is at the stadium. You still need a longer walk or onward bus journey. Manchester Victoria has step-free platform access; do not assume the complete route to the turnstile is step-free.

Station to ground & away entrance

Use the Moor Lane entrance for the away end, not Nevile Road. The AIG Stadium is also called Moor Lane or the Peninsula Stadium, and the visiting-supporter sat-nav address is M7 3PZ. Away supporters normally enter through Turnstile Block A beside St Paul's Church, towards the eastern end of Moor Lane. The East Stand houses visiting terracing, with some seated allocations in the North Stand; both normally use the same entrance.

Follow the allocation and turnstile printed on your ticket if your fixture differs. If you arrive on the 97 or 98, leave the bus at Kersal Bar on Bury New Road. Walk along Moor Lane to the eastern turnstiles, allowing for the narrow pavements and queues immediately outside the ground.

Buses & local travel

Take the 97 or 98 from the Manchester Victoria or Shudehill side if you want the simplest public transport journey. Both serve Bury New Road at Kersal Bar, with a final walk along Moor Lane to Turnstile Block A. For the return, use the stop on Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane for services towards Manchester Shudehill. Check the Bee Network departure board rather than relying on an old timetable, particularly for evening kick-offs.

Some other Bury New Road services also run towards the city centre. From Prestwich, the same 97 and 98 corridor is useful heading towards Manchester. No dedicated Salford City stadium park-and-ride shuttle is currently confirmed, so do not travel expecting the older Agecroft service.

Parking

Walsall at Salford City

Book an authorised driveway near Moor Lane if you want to drive right to Salford City. There is no public supporter car park at the stadium, and matchday permit restrictions cover much of the surrounding residential area. A speculative search for free street parking close to kick-off is not a sensible plan. For nearby parking, JustPark lists privately offered driveways on Christie Lane, Vine Street and Norwood Avenue.

Parking & park-and-ride

Check the precise entrance, price, vehicle size and booking window before paying. A booked off-road driveway is different from parking in a residents-only bay on the same road. For genuinely free parking, use a council car park farther away rather than an unverified Kersal street. Bury Council lists the Longfield Centre and Fairfax Road car parks in Prestwich as free.

From the Longfield Centre, take the 97 or 98 towards Manchester and get off at Kersal Bar, then walk along Moor Lane. Bus fares apply, and spaces are not guaranteed. The nearby restriction zone includes Nevile Road, Norwood Avenue and Castlemoor Avenue, with controlled sections of Oaklands Road and Blackfield Lane. It operates noon–7pm for 3pm kick-offs and 5–11pm for 7.45pm starts.

Some Moor Lane bays have a one-hour matchday limit, so they are unsuitable for a football visit. Allow around four to five hours for parking, walking, pre-match arrival, the game and departure. We could not verify any particular free on-street section for that whole period. Supermarket parking is not a safe substitute without explicit football-use permission. If local bookings are unavailable, park legally in Prestwich and use the bus.

Driving & road restrictions

Set your navigation for the AIG Stadium, Moor Lane, Salford M7 3PZ, but arrange parking before entering the residential approaches. Visiting-club directions use M60 junction 17, then the A56 Bury New Road towards Manchester, turning into Moor Lane near St Paul's Church. The immediate streets are subject to matchday permit controls, and some stretches of Moor Lane have waiting or loading restrictions. Those rules can be enforced even when a road looks quiet.

Do not use Nevile Road as a shortcut to the away entrance if your ticket points you to Moor Lane. Roadworks and temporary diversions can alter the final approach, so check current traffic information before departure. Leave additional time for the last few miles and for pedestrians gathering outside the turnstiles.

Comfort & weather

Walsall at Salford City

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

Facilities are simple and the immediate neighbourhood has limited pre-match amenities.

Shelter and exposure

Supporter observation

Moor Lane is compact and easy to enjoy, but it can feel very cold in poor weather and a big away following can put real pressure on the half-time refreshment queues. Wrap up well and consider getting food or drink before the rush.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · AIG Stadium

Worth knowing

Walsall at Salford City

A small ground brings together old non-League Moor Lane, the 2017 rebuild, changing sponsor names and EFL football. The restored orange-and-black colours and local symbols add Salford's earlier history to the familiar celebrity-ownership story.

Matchday features

Away terrace. Wheelchair bays in North Stand. Coach drop-off at away turnstile. Limited immediate pub choice

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

A small EFL ground rather than a prestige stadium

The low stands, terraces and short distances to the pitch still read as a ground that has climbed with the club.

The orange reset

In 2026-27 the visual identity is deliberately different from the red Salford seen through most of the Class of '92 era.

Local references make more sense with context

Supporter interpretation

The Ammies nickname, 'Dirty Old Town', the crest's gasworks/rose imagery and fanzine culture all point back to Salford itself.

The name on current material

As of 2026-27 it is AIG Stadium. 'Peninsula Stadium' is now a recent historical sponsorship name; 'Moor Lane' remains the geographical and cultural continuity.

Orange replacing red

Supporter interpretation

The identity reset is meant to extend beyond the shirt into stadium presentation, so changes in cladding and other colour cues are part of an ongoing transition.

Kersal setting

Supporter interpretation

The residential/green setting can surprise visitors expecting an overtly industrial cityscape from the Salford name and 'Dirty Old Town' association.

Historic sporting site

The Moor Lane site and its immediate area hosted sport long before Salford City arrived, including cricket and earlier grandstand infrastructure.

Old Moor Lane memories

Supporter interpretation

Oral histories preserve the pre-rebuild ground as a place of tiny crowds, grass-bank/non-League informality and homemade noise.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Manchester Victoria is the most useful mainline arrival station for Salford City. Moor Lane is too far away for most supporters to walk from central Manchester, so take a bus towards Bury or arrange a taxi for the final journey.

From Shudehill or the Victoria area, use a 97 or 98 bus towards Prestwich and Bury. Get off on Bury New Road at Kersal Bar, by Moor Lane, then follow Moor Lane uphill towards the away entrance near St Paul's Church.

Coaches

Away coaches

If you are on an organised away coach, expect the set-down point on Moor Lane immediately outside the away turnstiles. That is the arrangement published in Salford's accessibility information, and Turnstile Block A is normally the entrance for both visiting terraces and seating.

Confirm the exact pick-up point with your coach organiser before kick-off. A narrow pavement and busy residential approach can make access awkward, particularly if a wheelchair lift or ramp is needed. Ask the organiser and Salford's accessibility contact to coordinate a suitable drop-off position rather than assume every coach can stop in the same place.

After full-time, follow your organiser's instructions and leave enough time to get back to the coach without cutting through the home-supporter entrances.

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible tickets and the exact viewing position with Salford City before travelling. The usual away entrance is Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane, and the club describes a ramp down into the away area. However, recent wheelchair-user reviews report difficulties with away-end sightlines and seating arrangements.

Level Playing Field currently lists disability liaison contact Andrew Giblin on 07808 254 646 or andy.giblin@salfordcityfc.co.uk.

After the match

After the match

For the simplest exit, walk back along Moor Lane to your authorised parking space or to the Kersal Bar bus stops. Drivers should expect pedestrians on narrow residential streets, while the permit controls continue well after full-time. Do not move into a nearby residents-only bay while waiting for traffic to clear.

If heading to Manchester, catch a 97 or 98 towards Shudehill from Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane. For a car parked at the Longfield Centre in Prestwich, travel in the opposite direction towards Bury and get off at the Longfield Centre.

Check the final bus for evening fixtures and leave a comfortable margin for any onward train. A booked driveway confirms parking permission, not a traffic-free departure.

Where to stay

Stay near Manchester Victoria or Shudehill if you want the best balance of football transport, restaurants and an evening out. Both are useful for catching the 97 or 98 towards Salford City, without needing a car in Kersal's residents-only streets.

The Cathedral Quarter is an easy base for a longer away trip. Maldron Manchester Cathedral Quarter advertises a short walk to Victoria station, with central Manchester's food and bars within reach. Allow for a bus or taxi to Moor Lane rather than assuming the ground is walkable from the hotel.

Prestwich is a quieter alternative if you want to approach the ground from the north using the same bus corridor. Staying close to Moor Lane is less useful for an evening out, and hotel prices can change considerably when Manchester has major events.

AWAY-DAY OVERVIEW

Before you head to the ground

Salford City play at Moor Lane, now branded the AIG Stadium, in a residential part of Kersal where you cannot rely on a pub beside the turnstiles.

Read full overview Hide full overview

Salford City play at Moor Lane, now branded the AIG Stadium, in a residential part of Kersal where you cannot rely on a pub beside the turnstiles. Manchester Victoria is the practical rail arrival: meet around NOMA or the Northern Quarter, then use the 93 or 97/98 bus north rather than walking three miles. Away supporters enter Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane for the East Terrace and allocated North Stand seats.
