FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW SWINDON TOWN TO WALSALL

This fixture is still months away, on 16 January. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Swindon Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Swindon Town are 15th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points. Set that against the summer expectation: promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Swindon Town come into the current picture with one win, two draws and two defeats across their last five league games, worth five points from a possible fifteen. Walsall's last five recorded league games brought two wins and three draws: nine points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Walsall are 4th in League Two after 11 league games, with 19 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders.

The destination is Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium in Walsall. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For the strongest all-round Walsall hotel proposition, Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Walsall is the safer quality/value choice if you are happy to use a taxi or car for the stadium. If walking to the turnstiles matters most, Park Inn by Radisson is the practical outlier because it sits beside the ground and Bescot Stadium station. If the evening is as important as the football, Birmingham city centre works because trains run directly between New Street and Bescot Stadium. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

An away day is a chance to follow Swindon Town somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Walsall by IHG

Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Walsall by IHG

Tempus Drive / M6 Junction 10, Walsall

The best-balanced Walsall recommendation when hotel quality matters more than sleeping beside the turnstiles. Recent review evidence is materially stronger and more consistent than the nearest hotel, breakfast and parking are included, and Booking.com coverage is verified. The compromise is location: this is a motorway-junction hotel, so use a taxi or car for Bescot rather than treating it as a pleasant stadium walk.

  • Recent reviews repeatedly praise friendly staff, clean/comfortable rooms and breakfast.
  • Free on-site parking is useful for driving supporters and breakfast is included in the Holiday Inn Express proposition.
The match journey

Booking.com places the hotel about 1.7 miles from Bescot Stadium. It sits at M6 Junction 10 and has no local hotel shuttle; for a match, taxi/car is more practical than walking.

Booking.com places it about 1.7 miles from Bescot Stadium; the road setting means a taxi or car is the practical matchday transfer.

WHY STAY HERE?

Holiday Inn Express Birmingham - Walsall by IHG

Tempus Drive / M6 Junction 10, Walsall

Our view

The best-balanced Walsall recommendation when hotel quality matters more than sleeping beside the turnstiles. Recent review evidence is materially stronger and more consistent than the nearest hotel, breakfast and parking are included, and Booking.com coverage is verified. The compromise is location: this is a motorway-junction hotel, so use a taxi or car for Bescot rather than treating it as a pleasant stadium walk.

Why it suits this trip

  • Booking.com currently scores it about 8.5/10 from roughly 1,884 reviews, with particularly strong cleanliness, staff and value scores.
  • Recent reviews repeatedly praise friendly staff, clean/comfortable rooms and breakfast.
  • Free on-site parking is useful for driving supporters and breakfast is included in the Holiday Inn Express proposition.
  • Live rate sampling showed good value on several non-home-match dates, including sub-£100 nights.

Getting to the ground

Booking.com places the hotel about 1.7 miles from Bescot Stadium. It sits at M6 Junction 10 and has no local hotel shuttle; for a match, taxi/car is more practical than walking.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel has its own bar/restaurant, but the main Walsall pubs and bars are in the town centre rather than around Tempus Drive.

Arriving by train

IHG identifies Walsall as the relevant rail station, but the hotel is not station-front. For the stadium itself, a taxi is more straightforward than travelling into Walsall station and back out.

The trade-offs

  • Booking.com places it about 1.7 miles from Bescot Stadium; the road setting means a taxi or car is the practical matchday transfer.
  • It is not in Walsall's pub/nightlife core and is much less convenient than Park Inn for rail-based stadium access.
  • Some recent guests mention road noise, so light sleepers may prefer a room away from the M6 side.

Research price context

Typically about £94–£144 midweek and £89–£120 at weekends in the sample; the weekend sample averaged slightly lower rather than carrying a premium.

It is around a five-minute walk from the stadium and a few steps from Bescot Stadium station, so the football logistics are exceptional. It does not take the overall recommendation because recent 2026 review evidence is mixed on room condition, maintenance and cleanliness.

Why it suits this trip

  • Radisson places the hotel about a five-minute walk from Bescot Stadium.
  • Bescot Stadium station is immediately nearby, giving direct rail access to Birmingham New Street and Walsall.
  • There is an on-site bar/restaurant and free parking, so a supporter can make the stadium-area stay work without needing a town-centre base.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the live sample included several sub-£100 nights.

Getting to the ground

Official Radisson material describes a five-minute walk to the stadium; the hotel is also beside Bescot Stadium railway station.

Pubs and the evening

Useful on-site bar/restaurant, but this is not a nightlife district. Use the train to Walsall or Birmingham if the evening matters.

Arriving by train

The station is a few steps from the hotel and about two minutes from the stadium; direct trains serve Birmingham New Street and Walsall.

The trade-offs

  • Recent Tripadvisor and other 2026 reviews contain repeated complaints about tired rooms, maintenance and occasional cleanliness issues.
  • The immediate stadium area has little nightlife or independent food choice.
  • Room rates were volatile in the sample, including one midweek night at £147.20.

Research price context

Typically about £77–£147 midweek and £77–£98 at weekends in the sample. Pricing was volatile, and sampled weekends were cheaper on average than sampled midweek nights.

Our view

The nightlife pick is deliberately in Birmingham rather than beside Bescot. easyHotel is about three minutes from New Street, within a few minutes of bars and restaurants, and keeps the overnight cost relatively controlled. That gives supporters a direct rail run to the match and a much deeper post-match evening than the stadium area. The room is the trade-off: this is a genuinely basic, compact place to sleep, not a hotel to spend time in.

Why it suits this trip

  • Official hotel information places Birmingham New Street about three minutes' walk away.
  • Booking.com rates the location around 9.3/10 and the hotel around 8.1/10 overall.
  • Bars, restaurants, Southside and the city centre are immediately accessible, with Brindleyplace/Broad Street also walkable.
  • Direct trains connect Birmingham New Street and Bescot Stadium, making the city-centre strategy practical for the football.

Getting to the ground

This is a rail-based matchday option rather than a stadium walk. Birmingham New Street has direct trains to Bescot Stadium.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel is in the city centre within a short walk of bars and restaurants; Brindleyplace is about ten minutes' walk from New Street according to Visit Birmingham.

Arriving by train

Official easyHotel information puts New Street about three minutes away. Bescot Stadium station is directly served from New Street.

The trade-offs

  • Rooms are very small and storage is minimal; some room types may have no window.
  • Recent reviews mention occasional noise from nearby nightlife, so this choice prioritises location over tranquillity.
  • Luggage storage can incur a charge.
  • Late-evening rail frequency can reduce, so supporters should check the return timetable rather than assume a turn-up-and-go service.

Research price context

Typically about £93–£102 midweek and £107–£123 at weekends in the sample, with a modest weekend premium.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium

The ground

Swindon Town at Walsall

Functional, transport-edge and unmistakably lower-league rather than picturesque: railway line and station tight behind the away end, retail development nearby, motorway advertising visible in the club's business story, and a ground built on former sewage works. Some supporters dislike the blandness; others read the same lack of polish as part of its grounded authenticity.

Views from the away section

Generally straightforward modern sightlines.

Walsall’s away end has a useful low roof that helps travelling noise, but supporting pillars can impede individual sightlines; it is a classic case where atmosphere and view quality can trade off within the same stand.

Why the ground matters

Bescot matters less because it is architecturally romantic than because it kept Walsall in Walsall after a decade when groundshare proposals had made location politically charged. It sits close to Fellows Park, became a commercially useful motorway-side site and, since December 2022, is again owned by the football club. That ownership change closed one of the longest-running arguments in modern Saddlers history.

Accessibility

Swindon Town at Walsall

If you need step-free rail access, do not use Bescot Stadium station. National Rail says its platforms can only be reached by stairs, so travel to Walsall or Tame Bridge Parkway and arrange the remaining journey before matchday. For the stadium, contact Walsall in advance about a Blue Badge space and your actual entrance.

Accessible journeys

The club reports five accessible parking spaces available for visiting supporters and ten away wheelchair positions at pitch level in the side stand. This is separate from the standard B.A.T away-end entrance. Walsall offers a nearby drop-off arrangement, but spaces are limited and the exact approach should be agreed before travelling.

If you require assistance with concourse access, accessible toilets or seating, check the arrangements with the disability liaison team before buying a ticket.

Station to ground & away entrance

If you arrive by train, follow the marked route from Bescot Stadium station towards Bescot Crescent. Buses & local travel

Bescot Stadium station is the easiest way to reach the ground from Birmingham or Walsall. If you are already in Walsall town centre, Diamond's 45 bus is a useful alternative, stopping at Saddlers Club Bescot near the stadium. The 45 links Walsall and West Bromwich via Yew Tree and Stone Cross. Another option is the 4 towards West Bromwich, although its stop on West Bromwich Road leaves a longer walk to the ground.

For an evening match, check the return journey rather than assuming the daytime service continues at the same frequency. The 45 uses a reduced late-evening timetable, and a connection through Walsall or Birmingham may be more convenient than waiting near Bescot Crescent.

Parking

Swindon Town at Walsall

Book a space rather than gambling on free residential parking. The most straightforward choice for an away driver is the authorised JustPark allocation at Morrisons on Wallows Lane. It is a short walk to the ground, and booking covers a full football visit instead of the shop's ordinary two-hour limit. The stadium is another sound choice if you want to park next to the away end.

Parking & park-and-ride

Recent visiting-club guidance quotes £8 per car, with card payment, while Walsall's accessible-parking information says advance booking is possible. Expect some delay getting out after the match, particularly if you arrive or leave with the main crowd. Free street spaces are reported off Wallowes Lane, around Walstead Road and on residential roads such as Brockhurst Crescent. We could not confirm an unrestricted section suitable for matchday use.

Residents on the Poppyfields estate have raised problems with blocked access and yellow-line parking, and further restrictions were proposed there. If Morrisons is booked up, reserve a private driveway around Broadway or Grand Junction Way, or check official stadium parking before travelling. Neither the ordinary two-hour supermarket allowance nor Bescot Stadium's rail Park & Ride is a valid substitute for football parking.

Allow at least four hours for the visit, including walking, arriving before kick-off, the match and leaving afterwards. At evening games or busy fixtures, allow longer. The Green Zone closes two hours after the final whistle, so return before the lock-up if directed there.

Driving & road restrictions

For the ground itself, set your sat-nav for Bescot Crescent, WS1 4SA. From the M6 northbound approach, visiting guides describe leaving at junction 9 and following the A461 towards Walsall, then the A4148 Wallowes Lane to the stadium turn. From the south, an alternative is junction 7, the A34 and Walstead Road. The stadium is beside major roads, but getting close just before kick-off can be slower than the motorway journey suggests.

If you have booked Morrisons on Wallows Lane, follow the address and access instructions attached to that booking instead of heading first for the club car park. An interested visitor should look past the functional first impression.

Matchday advice: Book a space rather than gambling on free residential parking. The most straightforward choice for an away driver is the authorised JustPark allocation at Morrisons on Wallows Lane.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Bescot Stadium station if you can manage stairs. It is just across Bescot Crescent from the ground, with trains via Birmingham New Street and Walsall. Follow the station exit towards the stadium rather than setting off for Walsall town centre.

Bescot is not step-free: both platforms require a footbridge. If you need a step-free rail journey, choose Walsall station and arrange a suitable onward taxi or bus. Tame Bridge Parkway is another accessible rail option, although its ramps may be long or steep.

For the return journey, allow time to reach the platforms through the post-match crowd and check your actual train before leaving your seat. Evening and Sunday journeys deserve particular attention because the timetable can differ from Saturday afternoons.

Station to ground & away entrance

If you arrive by train, follow the marked route from Bescot Stadium station towards Bescot Crescent. The away end is the B.A.T Stand behind the goal, so the walk is short once you have crossed from the station side.

Drivers should aim for Bescot Crescent, WS1 4SA, rather than the middle of Walsall. Independent away-end guidance places the visiting turnstiles on the Bescot Crescent side; check the stand and turnstile printed on your ticket because additional visiting seats may be allocated elsewhere.

Give yourself extra time if you are joining a large away following. Accessible visiting supporters may be seated in the side stand rather than the normal away terrace-style section, so confirm the relevant gate with the club in advance.

Buses

Recommended local transport
Rail to Bescot Stadium station
Bus 45
Diamond service Walsall – West Bromwich; calls at Saddlers Club Bescot
Bus 45 boarding from town
Walsall town centre / Bradford Place area; confirm current stop
Bus 4 alternative
Stops on West Bromwich Road, approximately 14-minute walk to ground
Bus 45 evening frequency
Reduced later in the evening; verify actual matchdate timetable
Accessibility

Accessible journeys

If you need step-free rail access, do not use Bescot Stadium station. National Rail says its platforms can only be reached by stairs, so travel to Walsall or Tame Bridge Parkway and arrange the remaining journey before matchday.

For the stadium, contact Walsall in advance about a Blue Badge space and your actual entrance.

After the match

After the match

If you drove, the simplest finish is to return straight to your booked parking space rather than look for a shortcut through residential streets. JustPark customer reports describe an easy walk back from Morrisons, but the exit can become busy immediately after full-time.

Stadium car-park traffic also gathers around Bescot Crescent, so do not plan a tightly timed motorway connection. If you park in the Green Zone, make sure your car is out before the car park is locked two hours after the final whistle.

Rail travellers should head back towards Bescot Stadium station and check the platform for their direction. Allow time for the crowd and the station footbridge, especially if you are making a later connection at Birmingham New Street or Walsall.

Where to stay

For an overnight stay centred on the match, Park Inn by Radisson Birmingham Walsall is the easiest walk-to-ground option. The hotel sits beside Bescot Crescent and Bescot Stadium station, keeping the return short after an evening game. It is better for match convenience than a varied night out.

Walsall town centre is the better local base if you want shops, restaurants and pubs after the football. The stadium is around a 30-minute walk from the centre according to Transport for West Midlands, or you can use a bus or train.

Birmingham city centre also works for supporters using rail: Bescot Stadium has a connection through Birmingham New Street. Check the last service after evening matches rather than assume you can leave the ground and catch a train without waiting.
