FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW SHREWSBURY TOWN TO COLCHESTER UNITED

This fixture is still months away, on 24 April. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Shrewsbury Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Shrewsbury Town are 8th in League Two after 12 league games, with 17 points. Before the season, they were seen as outsiders for the play-offs.

Colchester United are 19th in League Two after 11 league games, with 12 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Shrewsbury Town's last five recorded league games brought three wins, one draw and one defeat: ten points from a possible fifteen. Recent results give Colchester United four points from a possible fifteen, with four draws and one defeat in their last five league games. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

The destination is JobServe Community Stadium in Colchester. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most overnight supporters, base yourself in the city centre and accept that the stadium is a separate matchday journey. Choose Northern Gateway instead only when getting back to the hotel quickly after the final whistle matters more than having Colchester's pubs and restaurants outside the door. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

Make the football the reason to go and give yourself enough time to enjoy it. Check the confirmed kick-off and ticket arrangements before committing to travel or a hotel, then choose the plan that lets you support Shrewsbury Town from the away end without rushing the whole day.

The George Hotel Colchester

The George Hotel Colchester

Colchester city centre / High Street

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice for a supporter who wants the football trip to continue after the final whistle. The George is on the High Street rather than by the ground, so it is not the answer for a walk-back-from-the-stadium stay, but it puts you directly into central Colchester for food, drinks and the evening.

  • Right on the High Street, with the city-centre pub, bar and restaurant cluster on the doorstep.
  • Own bar, restaurant and cocktail offer gives supporters an easy fallback without leaving the hotel.
The match journey

Third-party venue-distance evidence places the hotel about 2.3 miles from the JobServe Community Stadium. Walking is possible in principle, but the club's own guidance already puts Colchester Station to the ground at around 45 minutes, so this hotel is better treated as a taxi/bus/e-scooter city-centre base.

The trade-off

About 2.3 miles from the stadium, so this is a city-centre base rather than a practical stadium walk.

WHY STAY HERE?

The George Hotel Colchester

Colchester city centre / High Street

Our view

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice for a supporter who wants the football trip to continue after the final whistle. The George is on the High Street rather than by the ground, so it is not the answer for a walk-back-from-the-stadium stay, but it puts you directly into central Colchester for food, drinks and the evening. Its review evidence is much deeper than many of the smaller independents and Booking.com coverage is confirmed.

Why it suits this trip

  • Right on the High Street, with the city-centre pub, bar and restaurant cluster on the doorstep.
  • Booking.com currently shows a large review base and a strong location score.
  • Own bar, restaurant and cocktail offer gives supporters an easy fallback without leaving the hotel.
  • Sampled Booking.com pricing sits below GreyFriars while still giving a more characterful central stay than a roadside chain.
  • The hotel is still operating under the same name and its direct site is current.

Getting to the ground

Third-party venue-distance evidence places the hotel about 2.3 miles from the JobServe Community Stadium. Walking is possible in principle, but the club's own guidance already puts Colchester Station to the ground at around 45 minutes, so this hotel is better treated as a taxi/bus/e-scooter city-centre base.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel sits directly on High Street. Visit Colchester identifies central craft-beer venues, cocktail bars and late-night Queen Street options within the walkable city-centre evening cluster.

Arriving by train

The hotel states Colchester Town station is about 0.4 miles away and Colchester North/mainline station about 1.8 miles away. For London/Norwich match travel, Colchester Station is the main station.

The trade-offs

  • About 2.3 miles from the stadium, so this is a city-centre base rather than a practical stadium walk.
  • The historic layout has no lift and some rooms involve several flights of stairs.
  • High Street-facing rooms can pick up street/nightlife noise; light sleepers should ask for a rear room.
  • Parking is behind the hotel and chargeable; recent guest evidence quoted about £12 for 24 hours.

Research price context

About £106 midweek in the sample, with sampled Friday nights roughly £126-£147 and averaging about £133. That is a noticeable weekend premium, but not a premium-luxury price point for central Colchester.

Travelodge Colchester Northern Gateway

Travelodge Colchester Northern Gateway

Northern Gateway / stadium

This is the clear choice when the supporter priority is getting from the turnstile to bed with almost no transport planning. It is on the same Northern Gateway development as the ground, and Colchester United explicitly lists it as the closest hotel. The compromise is equally clear: you are staying in a leisure-park setting rather than in Colchester's proper evening pub-and-bar area.

  • Colchester United explicitly identifies it as the closest hotel to the stadium.
  • Third-party distance evidence puts it about 0.2 miles from the JobServe Community Stadium.
The match journey

This is the strongest proximity case in the local market. Colchester United calls it the closest hotel and Tripadvisor's stadium-nearby listing gives roughly 0.2 miles. It is a realistic walk before and after the match.

The trade-off

Northern Gateway is not Colchester's main nightlife district; a city-centre hotel is much better for pubs and bars.

Northern Gateway / stadium

Our view

This is the clear choice when the supporter priority is getting from the turnstile to bed with almost no transport planning. It is on the same Northern Gateway development as the ground, and Colchester United explicitly lists it as the closest hotel. The compromise is equally clear: you are staying in a leisure-park setting rather than in Colchester's proper evening pub-and-bar area.

Why it suits this trip

  • Colchester United explicitly identifies it as the closest hotel to the stadium.
  • Third-party distance evidence puts it about 0.2 miles from the JobServe Community Stadium.
  • Travelodge describes the hotel as being on the doorstep of Colchester United Football Club.
  • Free guest parking is currently advertised at the nearby Northern Gateway multi-storey with daily validation.
  • On-site Bar Café and nearby leisure-park food options cover the basics when nightlife is not the priority.

Getting to the ground

This is the strongest proximity case in the local market. Colchester United calls it the closest hotel and Tripadvisor's stadium-nearby listing gives roughly 0.2 miles. It is a realistic walk before and after the match.

Pubs and the evening

There is a cinema, bowling and chain food around the leisure park plus the hotel's Bar Café, but supporters wanting traditional pubs, independent bars or a late night are better in the city centre.

Arriving by train

The stadium's closest station is Colchester Station. The club advises about a 45-minute station-to-stadium walk. Park & Ride buses run on Saturdays into early evening, but for 19:45 midweek matches the club warns they finish before the match ends — one reason this hotel is particularly useful for evening fixtures.

The trade-offs

  • Northern Gateway is not Colchester's main nightlife district; a city-centre hotel is much better for pubs and bars.
  • Recent reviews include repeated complaints about weak mobile signal/Wi-Fi value or reliability.
  • A small but meaningful cluster of recent reviews raised housekeeping/cleanliness concerns.
  • Parking information has changed over time on third-party pages; use the current Travelodge instructions rather than older listings.
  • Price evidence is less robust than for the Booking.com-covered central hotels.

Research price context

Direct Travelodge price-finder evidence was volatile. Three clean midweek snapshots were £60-£94; the only clean off-match Friday snapshot in the retrieved direct-rate window was £56. Tripadvisor's recent standard-room range was roughly £42-£88. There is not enough clean non-match weekend sampling here to claim a dependable weekend average.

Colchester Boutique Hotel

North Hill / city centre

The strongest pick for supporters who want to make a proper evening of Colchester. North Hill is in the useful central pub-and-bar zone rather than out by the A12, and recent guests repeatedly praise having bars and restaurants on the doorstep. The hotel also has the advantage of free parking and unusually stable sampled pricing.

  • North Hill puts you within the walkable city-centre food, pub and bar cluster.
  • Recent Tripadvisor guests repeatedly mention bars and restaurants immediately nearby.
The match journey

Tripadvisor's stadium-nearby listing places it about 2.2 miles from the ground. The location works as a city-centre base, not as a post-match walk-back hotel.

The trade-off

About 2.2-2.3 miles from the stadium, so it is not a sensible stadium walk-back choice.

Our view

The strongest pick for supporters who want to make a proper evening of Colchester. North Hill is in the useful central pub-and-bar zone rather than out by the A12, and recent guests repeatedly praise having bars and restaurants on the doorstep. The hotel also has the advantage of free parking and unusually stable sampled pricing.

Why it suits this trip

  • North Hill puts you within the walkable city-centre food, pub and bar cluster.
  • Recent Tripadvisor guests repeatedly mention bars and restaurants immediately nearby.
  • Tripadvisor's current hotel listing is exceptionally strong at about 4.7/5 from more than 500 reviews.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the location score is around 9.4/10.
  • Free parking is useful for supporters driving into Colchester but wanting to spend the evening on foot.
  • The sampled rate was unusually stable at roughly £125-£130 across both midweek and Friday stays.

Getting to the ground

Tripadvisor's stadium-nearby listing places it about 2.2 miles from the ground. The location works as a city-centre base, not as a post-match walk-back hotel.

Pubs and the evening

Visit Colchester highlights North Hill for cocktails and nearby central streets for pubs, music and late-night venues. Recent hotel reviews specifically note that bars and restaurants are on the doorstep.

Arriving by train

Booking.com puts the hotel about 0.7 miles from Colchester Station; other current accommodation sources describe it as roughly a 17-minute walk. Colchester Town station is also walkable.

The trade-offs

  • About 2.2-2.3 miles from the stadium, so it is not a sensible stadium walk-back choice.
  • Rooms are individually configured; not every room has air conditioning and most are upstairs.
  • A small number of 2026 reviews raised room-specific cleanliness, heat or bed-comfort issues.
  • The hotel's restaurant information has varied across third-party listings, so supporters booking specifically for an on-site dinner should verify current opening days.

Research price context

Very stable in this sample: about £125 midweek and roughly £125-£130 on sampled Fridays, with essentially no meaningful weekend premium.

YOUR AWAY DAY · JobServe Community Stadium

The ground

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

JobServe is a modern, four-stand all-seater. Its identity is increasingly concentrated by use: vocal home support in the South, families in the East, away supporters in the North, and club functions in the West. The club has also deliberately added historical artwork so the ground carries memories that were not physically made there.

Recorded capacity
10,105

Views from the away section

The usual visitor section is side-on in the northern part of the JobServe Stand, so you get a broader tactical view than a conventional behind-goal away end. Sightlines are clear and modern; sitting nearer the halfway-line side of the allocation improves the angle across both penalty areas. The separate elevated away wheelchair gantry is deliberately high enough that standing supporters below should not block the pitch.

Why the ground matters

The present ground and the lost ground have to be read together. JobServe Community Stadium is where current Colchester happens; Layer Road is where much of the club's inherited emotional language was formed.

South Stand

Current vocal home area and home of the Blue White Army supporter group.

East Stand

Current family area and location of the family fan zone.

North Stand

Designated away area under the club's current first-visit guidance.

West Stand

Main stand with tunnel, dugouts and hospitality; also a natural place for longer-established seated support.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

Open corners can reduce noise retention compared with enclosed bowls.

From the supporters

Colchester’s separate single-tier stands are relatively steep and close to the pitch, which helps both home and away supporters generate more noise than the ground’s modern out-of-town setting might suggest.

Up the U's

A core phrase and song title in Colchester supporter culture. This research avoids reproducing lyrics; the identity value is in the repeated 'U's' language.

Heritage displays and anniversary remembrance

The club repeatedly stages heritage events and now embeds supporter-selected history in the stadium itself, making remembrance an active part of current club culture.

YOUR AWAY DAY · JobServe Community Stadium

Food & drink

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium sits on the northern edge of the city by the A12, and the immediate traditional-pub choice remains thin. The strongest near-ground option is the Dog & Pheasant, while the club’s own Fan Zone, Legends Bar and Hotshots setup gives both home and away supporters a convenient stadium-side fallback with food and drink. Northern Gateway also adds practical grab-and-go food close to the ground.

Food and drink around the ground

For rail arrivals, the better pre-match choice is around Colchester station or farther into the city centre. Current visiting-supporter guidance repeatedly points to the Bricklayers by the station, while the Magnet gives a beer-led alternative nearby; Three Wise Monkeys is a useful city-centre food-and-drink option for supporters arriving early. Recent away guides put the station-to-stadium walk at around 40 minutes, so rail travellers should allow time to move on.

Drivers trade atmosphere and variety for convenience: stadium-side and Northern Gateway options are simpler, but city-centre and station stops offer a broader pre-match choice.

JobServe Community Stadium Fan Zone / Legends Bar

The club’s current matchday timetable says the Fan Zone outside Hotshots Cafe and the Legends Bar is open to both home and away supporters, with food and drink plus televised football. This is the most clearly verified option for visitors who want to stay at the stadium rather than build a pub stop into the day.

Dog & Pheasant

This is the most consistently recommended traditional pub near the stadium in recent visiting-supporter guidance. Newport County’s December 2025 away guide explicitly called it away-fan friendly and put it at roughly a ten-minute walk, while the current Greene King page confirms food, live sport, family facilities and current opening hours.

Away access is treated as usually rather than guaranteed because an older ground guide reported a less welcoming stance toward visiting supporters. No current evidence was found confirming an away-colours policy, so colours remain unknown.

The Bricklayers Arms

The Bricklayers is the recurring station-area recommendation. CAMRA lists it as open, close to Colchester mainline station, lively, serving food and showing sport; a Colchester supporter posted in January 2026 that they used it for a pre-match drink. Visiting-club guides also continue to recommend it, but older first-hand away evidence records a home-only restriction for one fixture.

Treat away admission as fixture-dependent rather than guaranteed. No reliable current evidence was found for away colours, and no stadium walking time is returned because recent sources do not give a robust explicit figure for this pub-to-ground walk.

The Magnet

The Magnet is a small beer-led option close to Colchester station rather than the stadium. CAMRA surveyed it in February 2026 and records a relaxed micropub, family-friendly facilities and three changing cask beers; its own site describes a locally focused drinks range and proximity to the station. It appears useful for rail arrivals who prefer a micropub to a larger sports pub.

No current source was found confirming a specific away-supporter or away-colours policy, so both remain unknown. Food is also left unknown rather than inferred from the venue type.

Three Wise Monkeys

Three Wise Monkeys is a city-centre option for supporters who want more choice than the stadium edge provides. Its current site confirms a four-floor tap house and BBQ smokehouse with extensive beer and food, and a Colchester supporter recommended it in a 2024 Reddit thread about pre-match pubs. It is better treated as an early-arrival city-centre base than a near-ground stop.

No current football-specific away-fan or colours policy was found. The venue states that its licensing does not allow under-18s to remain past 9pm, so families should check the timing and any event-specific restrictions.

Greggs - Northern Gateway Leisure Park

Greggs at Northern Gateway is a practical quick-food option in the stadium area. The current Greggs page confirms the branch is open on Cuckoo Farm Way with early opening and sandwiches, bakes, hot food and drinks; Brentford’s visiting-supporter guide also specifically identified Greggs among the food outlets outside the stadium.

No football-specific away-colours or matchday-admission policy was found. Do not assume the adjacent leisure-park parking can be used as football parking; the council applies event-day parking controls.

Wendy's - Northern Gateway Leisure Park

Wendy’s is another practical Northern Gateway option rather than a supporter pub. Its current location page confirms the Cuckoo Farm Way restaurant is open daily with long hours, and visiting-supporter guidance has specifically identified it among the food choices outside the stadium. It is useful for convenience, not pre-match pub atmosphere.

Accessibility

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

Book accessible tickets and parking with Colchester United before you travel. The stadium has designated disabled parking near entrances and wheelchair places with visiting supporters, but parking can sell out. Arrange tickets early and ask the club whether your particular away viewing position is pitch-side or elevated.

Accessible journeys

Colchester railway station has step-free access to all platforms, although Greater Anglia advises some passengers to use the London-bound side because the lift route is easier. Do not assume the walk from the Park & Ride across the bridge suits every mobility need. Contact the club's Disability Liaison Officer about the away approach and an appropriate parking or drop-off arrangement.

Disabled parking
32 accessible parking bays outside the stadium are reported for home and away supporters; book in advance.
Accessible parking tariff
Club accessibility guidance lists £7.50 per car; confirm when purchasing.
Away wheelchair provision
Away wheelchair accommodation and companion seating are available. Club 2024 describes an elevated away gantry; September 2026 Level Playing Field material describes pitch-side away places. Confirm the exact location and lift route with the club.
Drop-off
The club permits accessible passenger drop-off/pickup outside the stadium when arranged with staff.
Accessibility contact
Michael Green, club Disability Liaison Officer; club first-visit page lists 01206 755161 and michael.green@colchesterunited.net.

Greater Anglia lists step-free access to all Colchester platforms, with easier access from the London-bound side.

Before the match

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

Use Colchester railway station, often called North Station, for the JobServe Community Stadium. It is on the main London Liverpool Street–Norwich line, but the ground is not a short walk. Allow around 45 minutes on foot, or use a Park & Ride bus towards Northern Gateway and walk the final section. Colchester Town station is better for accommodation in the city centre, not for reaching the stadium directly.

Pre-match choices

A designated away bar has operated; nearby retail/food outlets are more plentiful than traditional pubs.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

If arriving there, connect through the centre to a Park & Ride bus, or arrange a taxi. Check your homeward train before the match, particularly on a weekday evening when the Park & Ride buses finish early.

Recommended station
Colchester (mainline/North Station) – use for London Liverpool Street and Norwich trains.
Walk from Colchester station
Club estimates approximately 45 minutes via Mile End Road, Nayland Road and Boxted Road.
Rail alternative
Colchester Town is a city-centre branch-line station rather than the closest stadium station.
Station step-free
Colchester station: step-free access to all platforms, although Greater Anglia advises people with restricted mobility to use the London-bound side.
Timetable caution
Check fixture-specific last train and onward Park & Ride connection; no permanent late-match shuttle has been verified.

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the North Stand if you are visiting with away supporters. Colchester United identifies it as the normal away section, although your own club's ticket instructions take priority if an unusually large allocation changes the arrangement. Follow the signed away route around the stadium rather than joining home turnstile queues. Walking from Colchester station, follow Mile End Road north, continue along Nayland Road and then Boxted Road towards the ground.

From the Park & Ride side, use the pedestrian route beside McDonald's and cross the A12 on Boxted Road bridge. The club directs pedestrians onto the stadium site near United Way; there is no vehicle through-route from Boxted Road.

Away stand
North Stand is the club-designated visiting section; fixture-specific allocations can change.
Away entrance
Follow North Stand/away-turnstile signage and your visiting-club ticket instructions; specific gate numbering not confirmed as permanent.
Station approach
Mile End Road, Nayland Road, then Boxted Road; club allows around 45 minutes from Colchester station.
Park and Ride pedestrian approach
Walk beside McDonald’s, turn left over Boxted Road bridge and follow the path to United Way.
Access restriction
No vehicle access between Boxted Road and United Way.

Buses & local travel

Take a Colchester Park & Ride bus towards the Northern Gateway stop if you would rather not walk the full distance from the station. Services link the town centre, Colchester railway station and the Park & Ride area. From the stop, allow time for the final walk to the stadium rather than expecting a bus to reach the away turnstiles. This is not a dedicated football shuttle with guaranteed post-match departures.

The club says Saturday buses usually finish around early evening, and weekday evening fixtures finish after the normal Park & Ride service. Check your return journey before setting off and use a pre-arranged taxi or the 45-minute station walk when the bus will not run.

Parking

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

Book parking rather than banking on free street space near Colchester United. Visiting-club guidance describes a matchday exclusion area covering clearways and residential roads. We could not confirm a named, unrestricted street with a dependable matchday space. Avoid arriving late and circling housing estates looking for one. For the simplest visit, reserve the stadium car park through Colchester United before travelling.

Parking & park-and-ride

The club advertises almost 700 spaces at typically £7.50 and requires your registration number for its ANPR barrier. It is beside the ground, but supporters report slow exits. For a standard Saturday 3pm kick-off, Colchester Park & Ride on Cuckoo Farm Way (CO4 5JA) is the strongest cheaper alternative. The park-only tariff is £3 Monday to Saturday, and the walk crosses the A12 on Boxted Road bridge.

Allow roughly 5–10 minutes to the stadium site and extra time to find the away entrance. Do not confuse it with the adjacent Northern Gateway sites. The leisure multi-storey charges £16.50 on football/event days. Its free retail bays outside Greggs and Wendy's allow only 90 minutes, while venue exemptions require genuine custom and validation. They are not free football parking.

Allow at least four hours for a normal matchday visit, including arrival, the match, both walks and getting out. For a 3pm Saturday start, aim to be parked by about 1:30pm. Check Park & Ride closing times for late kick-offs, Sundays or bank holidays; its normal closing time is around 7:30pm and event extensions are not guaranteed. If the stadium car park sells out, use the Park & Ride only when your match fits its permitted hours.

Otherwise check the Northern Gateway leisure multi-storey's paid matchday tariff or another confirmed authorised booking. The Sports Park has separate event pricing, so do not assume its normal rate applies.

Parking verdict

Retail parking — Greggs / Wendy’s surface
Northern Gateway Area B is free for 90 minutes only, no return within 2 hours; register free stay on MiPermit 737953. Not enough time for a match.
Retail parking — cinema, bowling and restaurants

Hotel car park — Travelodge
Travelodge Northern Gateway guests qualify for free validated hotel parking, not general football supporters.
Total dwell time
Plan on at least four hours: around 60–90 minutes before kick-off, roughly 105–115 minutes of football and interval, two walks and departure delay; longer for a long pre-match stay or extra time.
After the match
February 2026 fan reporting describes stadium-car-park delays of up to an hour; not a guaranteed wait.

YOUR AWAY DAY · JobServe Community Stadium

Worth knowing

Shrewsbury Town at Colchester United

An away visitor sees a modern League Two stadium whose most interesting identity is partly invisible unless they know what was lost at Layer Road. The useful contrast is not 'soulless new ground versus perfect old ground'; it is between modern functionality and an older place whose oddities became stories.

Matchday features

Elevated wheelchair gantries. Dedicated away bar. Cashless operation signal. Open-corner modern design

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

Around the ground

The away allocation is currently the North Stand under the club's own general guidance.

The South Stand, opposite the away end, is the current vocal home area and therefore the part of the ground most likely to define the home atmosphere.

The stadium is edge-of-town and purpose-built, a sharp contrast with the residential setting and improvised feel remembered at Layer Road.

Historical artwork around the stadium is worth reading because it explains which players and moments supporters themselves chose to foreground.

A detail worth noticing

Look for the heritage graphics rather than assuming the 2008 architecture contains no history.

The South Stand is the best place to read the current home support's visual culture: flags, BWA presence and concentrated noise.

For deeper context, the most significant physical Colchester United memorial is not at the current stadium but at the old Layer Road site.

United Through Time graphics around the current stadium were based on supporter-selected memories and designed with supporter involvement.

The former Layer Road site remains physically commemorated by Peter Wright's statue and memorial text.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Colchester railway station, often called North Station, for the JobServe Community Stadium. It is on the main London Liverpool Street–Norwich line, but the ground is not a short walk. Allow around 45 minutes on foot, or use a Park & Ride bus towards Northern Gateway and walk the final section.

Colchester Town station is better for accommodation in the city centre, not for reaching the stadium directly.

Coaches

Away coaches

If you are travelling on your club's official supporters' coach, use the arrival and collection arrangements issued with your coach booking. Visiting coaches have previously been accommodated outside Colchester's away end, which makes this a straightforward option when the organiser has confirmed a space. Check which exit and vehicle you need after full-time.

Do not assume that a private minibus can use the same position or that the old collection point will apply to your fixture. The ground is approached by road from United Way, while Boxted Road is not a vehicle entrance. Ask the visiting club or coach organiser to confirm the current parking and pickup plan with Colchester United.

Historical visiting-coach position
A Doncaster Rovers supporter liaison guide for December 2024 reported coaches parked outside the away end; not a guarantee for future fixtures.
Approach limitation
Vehicle access to stadium is via United Way, not through Boxted Road.
Fixture advice
Confirm allocated coach parking and return location with the organiser before the journey.
Buses

Park and Ride service
Park & Ride buses connect Colchester railway station, city centre and the north-side Park & Ride; confirm current operator/service number on the day.
Park and Ride station stop
The published 704 service includes Colchester Railway Station Layby, Stand F northbound towards the Park & Ride.
Last connection
The club warns buses end before weekday 7:45pm games finish.
Saturday return
Normal Saturday services run to early evening; check actual fixture-day timetable rather than assuming a later football shuttle.
Bus disruptions
Arriva lists ongoing delays on PR and other services during East Hill and St Botolph’s Roundabout roadworks.
Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Book accessible tickets and parking with Colchester United before you travel. The stadium has designated disabled parking near entrances and wheelchair places with visiting supporters, but parking can sell out. Arrange tickets early and ask the club whether your particular away viewing position is pitch-side or elevated.

Mainline station step-free
Greater Anglia lists step-free access to all Colchester platforms, with easier access from the London-bound side.
After the match

After the match

Do not expect an instant escape if you have parked inside JobServe Community Stadium. Supporters reported lengthy car-park queues in 2026, including waits approaching an hour at some games. A car park on the far side of the A12 may avoid some of that queue, but you still need to reach the junction and allow for traffic.

If you are heading back to Colchester station, check the last Park & Ride bus before kick-off. The normal service will not get you back after a typical midweek evening match, so plan a taxi or the long walk. Make sure the return-train connection leaves enough time for getting out of the stand and reaching the station.

Stadium exit experience
Supporters reported delays up to around one hour in February 2026; anecdotal, variable by attendance and traffic plan.
Outer car park escape
Park & Ride exit may bypass stadium car park queues, but pedestrian bridge and local A12 approach can still become busy.
Park & Ride bus warning
No post-match weekday evening Park & Ride return; club says bus finishes before 7:45pm fixtures end.
Park & Ride car park closing
Typically 19:30, unless operator confirms special matchday arrangements.

Where to stay

Stay in central Colchester around High Street, North Hill or the city-centre streets if you want a proper evening out and a choice of places to eat. You will still need to travel north to the stadium, using the Park & Ride bus while it runs or a taxi. Colchester Town station is convenient for parts of the centre; mainline trains use Colchester station.

Choose Travelodge Colchester Northern Gateway if a short walk back from the game matters more than pubs and restaurants outside your hotel. It is on United Way beside the leisure park and close to the stadium. Guests have validated free parking at the leisure multi-storey or limited adjacent spaces, but that concession is for hotel customers, not football parking generally.

Best overnight area — nightlife
Colchester city centre around High Street and North Hill, with restaurants and hotels within the centre.
Closest hotel option
Travelodge Colchester Northern Gateway, Unit 12 Northern Gateway Leisure Park, United Way CO4 5UP.
Travelodge parking rule
Hotel guests can validate free multi-storey parking daily; limited adjacent spaces need registration at check-in.
Ground access from city centre
Not a short walk; Colchester station alone is approximately 45 minutes on foot from stadium.
City-centre station
Colchester Town serves the city centre, separate from the mainline Colchester station.

Read full overview Hide full overview

Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium sits on the northern edge of the city by the A12, and the immediate traditional-pub choice remains thin. The strongest near-ground option is the Dog & Pheasant, while the club’s own Fan Zone, Legends Bar and Hotshots setup gives both home and away supporters a convenient stadium-side fallback with food and drink. Northern Gateway also adds practical grab-and-go food close to the ground.

Dog & Pheasant

24 Nayland Road, Mile End, Colchester, Essex, CO4 5EG
10 min walkUsually away-friendlyFamily friendlyFood available
BEST FORa pub stop relatively close to the stadium · pub food before kick-off · families · watching live sport
MATCHDAY INTELThis is the most consistently recommended traditional pub near the stadium in recent visiting-supporter guidance. Newport County’s December 2025 away guide explicitly called it away-fan friendly and put it at roughly a ten-minute walk, while the current Greene King page confirms food, live sport, family facilities and current opening hours.
WORTH KNOWINGAway access is treated as usually rather than guaranteed because an older ground guide reported a less welcoming stance toward visiting supporters. No current evidence was found confirming an away-colours policy, so colours remain unknown.
PUB / BAR

The Bricklayers Arms

27 Bergholt Road, Colchester, CO4 5AA
Away access: fixture dependentFamily friendlyFood available
BEST FORsupporters arriving by train · a pre-match pint near Colchester station · real ale · pub food
MATCHDAY INTELThe Bricklayers is the recurring station-area recommendation.
WORTH KNOWINGTreat away admission as fixture-dependent rather than guaranteed. No reliable current evidence was found for away colours, and no stadium walking time is returned because recent sources do not give a robust explicit figure for this pub-to-ground walk.
PUB / BAR

The Magnet

134 North Station Road, Colchester, CO1 1UZ
Away access: checkFamily friendly
BEST FORrail arrivals · cask ale and cider · a quieter beer-led stop near the station
MATCHDAY INTELThe Magnet is a small beer-led option close to Colchester station rather than the stadium. CAMRA surveyed it in February 2026 and records a relaxed micropub, family-friendly facilities and three changing cask beers; its own site describes a locally focused drinks range and proximity to the station. It appears useful for rail arrivals who prefer a micropub to a larger sports pub.
WORTH KNOWINGNo current source was found confirming a specific away-supporter or away-colours policy, so both remain unknown. Food is also left unknown rather than inferred from the venue type.
PUB / BAR

Three Wise Monkeys

60 High Street, Colchester, CO1 1DN
Away access: checkFamily: checkFood available
BEST FORsupporters arriving early in the city centre · craft beer · a fuller pre-match meal · groups
MATCHDAY INTELThree Wise Monkeys is a city-centre option for supporters who want more choice than the stadium edge provides. Its current site confirms a four-floor tap house and BBQ smokehouse with extensive beer and food, and a Colchester supporter recommended it in a 2024 Reddit thread about pre-match pubs. It is better treated as an early-arrival city-centre base than a near-ground stop.
