FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW OLDHAM ATHLETIC TO YORK CITY

This fixture is still months away, on 29 March. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Oldham Athletic are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Oldham Athletic are 21st in League Two after 11 league games, with 11 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

York City are 6th in League Two after 11 league games, with 17 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion favourites.

Oldham Athletic's last five recorded league games brought one win, one draw and three defeats: four points from a possible fifteen. Recent results give York City six points from a possible fifteen, with one win, three draws and one defeat in their last five league games. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

York is a historic city, so there is a reason to make time for the place as well as LNER Community Stadium. An earlier arrival or a night in town gives you more of the trip than the route straight to the turnstiles. For the best overall overnight, base yourself around Piccadilly/Fossgate/Walmgate: you can walk to the main food-and-drink streets and use the city-centre-to-Monks-Cross bus pattern or the Stonebow matchday shuttle. Choose Malton Road only when being able to walk back from the ground matters more than the evening. If an early train is the priority, the station-side west of the centre becomes more attractive. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

Make the football the reason to go and give yourself enough time to enjoy it. Check the confirmed kick-off and ticket arrangements before committing to travel or a hotel, then choose the plan that lets you support Oldham Athletic from the away end without rushing the whole day.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

Piccadilly / south-east edge of York city centre

The strongest all-round football-trip base: central enough for a proper York evening, close to the Stonebow side of the centre for the matchday shuttle, straightforward for the regular Monks Cross bus network, and more practical as an overnight hotel than some style-led rivals. Free hot breakfast is a meaningful benefit after a Saturday away day.

  • City-centre location puts Fossgate, Walmgate, Shambles-area food and pubs within an easy walk.
  • Free hot breakfast is included, improving value and convenience for a one-night football trip.
The match journey

Approximately 3.2 road miles in a current venue-hotel distance listing. For most supporters the sensible journey is Service 9 toward Monks Cross or the Y22 matchday shuttle from Stonebow, rather than walking.

The trade-off

It is not close enough to the stadium to treat walking as the normal match journey; use bus/shuttle or taxi.

WHY STAY HERE?

Hampton by Hilton York Piccadilly

Piccadilly / south-east edge of York city centre

Our view

The strongest all-round football-trip base: central enough for a proper York evening, close to the Stonebow side of the centre for the matchday shuttle, straightforward for the regular Monks Cross bus network, and more practical as an overnight hotel than some style-led rivals. Free hot breakfast is a meaningful benefit after a Saturday away day. The main warning is price: ordinary York Saturdays can be far more expensive than midweek even when York City are playing away.

Why it suits this trip

  • City-centre location puts Fossgate, Walmgate, Shambles-area food and pubs within an easy walk.
  • Free hot breakfast is included, improving value and convenience for a one-night football trip.
  • Large current Booking.com review base (8.5 from 11,849 reviews in the research check) gives more confidence than a small-sample boutique option.
  • Recent Tripadvisor feedback repeatedly highlights clean, modern rooms, friendly staff, good breakfast and a quiet stay.
  • The city-centre-to-Monks-Cross transport pattern is practical: Service 9 links the centre/station with Monks Cross, while the Y22 matchday shuttle runs from Stonebow.

Getting to the ground

Approximately 3.2 road miles in a current venue-hotel distance listing. For most supporters the sensible journey is Service 9 toward Monks Cross or the Y22 matchday shuttle from Stonebow, rather than walking.

Pubs and the evening

A few minutes from the Fossgate-Walmgate food and pub cluster, including Brew York and The Hop; also walkable to the wider centre.

Arriving by train

Approximately 18 minutes on foot in current route data; short bus/taxi alternative if carrying luggage.

The trade-offs

  • It is not close enough to the stadium to treat walking as the normal match journey; use bus/shuttle or taxi.
  • York Station is roughly a 16-18 minute walk, so the Toft Green Hampton is better if station proximity alone is the priority.
  • Self-parking is off-site at Q-Park and currently listed at £22 per day by Hilton.
  • Sampled Saturday prices were roughly £211-£310, so this can cease to be a value choice on busy weekends.

Research price context

Typically about £130-£175 midweek in the sampled dates, rising to roughly £210-£310 on sampled Saturdays. York weekend leisure demand, not just football, is the main pricing risk.

The match journey

Current Expedia/Hotels.com mapping lists LNER Community Stadium at about 0.5 miles / 9 minutes on foot. This is the decisive advantage over city-centre choices.

Our view

The closest practical hotel for LNER Community Stadium, and the clear choice if the match journey matters more than York nightlife. Current third-party mapping puts the ground at roughly a nine-minute walk. Free breakfast and 150 complimentary parking spaces are useful football-trip advantages. The compromise is that you are sleeping on the stadium side of York, not in the centre where the better pub, food and late-evening choice sits.

Why it suits this trip

  • Approximately 0.5 miles / 9 minutes on foot from LNER Community Stadium in current Expedia mapping.
  • Free Express Start breakfast is included.
  • 150 complimentary hotel parking spaces are advertised by IHG.
  • Recent Tripadvisor evidence is solid for cleanliness, service and breakfast.
  • Avoids the need to depend on post-match city-centre transport if the sole aim is a quick return to the room.

Getting to the ground

Current Expedia/Hotels.com mapping lists LNER Community Stadium at about 0.5 miles / 9 minutes on foot. This is the decisive advantage over city-centre choices.

Pubs and the evening

Useful chain food/leisure around Monks Cross, but not the York pub/nightlife experience. Use taxi/bus if you want an evening in the centre.

Arriving by train

The hotel is outside the centre and the station is under four miles away in current hotel profiles; taxi or public transport is more practical than walking with luggage.

The trade-offs

  • Around three miles outside York city centre, so it is a poor nightlife base compared with Piccadilly/Walmgate.
  • York Station is not walk-close for a luggage-heavy trip; plan a taxi/bus connection.
  • The immediate hotel/stadium area is retail/leisure-led rather than a traditional city pub district.
  • Saturday pricing still rose sharply in the sample despite York City playing away on those dates.

Research price context

Typically around £100-£125 midweek in the sampled dates, rising to roughly £150-£215 on sampled Saturdays. Breakfast and parking are included, which improves the real trip value.

The best pick when the post-match evening is part of the trip. It sits directly on Walmgate, beside the Fossgate/Walmgate food-and-pub cluster and very close to Brew York. It also has the strongest boutique feel of the three primary choices and current reviews are very good.

  • Directly in the Walmgate/Fossgate evening area rather than merely being somewhere in central York.
  • Brew York is just off Walmgate and The Hop is on Fossgate, giving supporters strong independent beer/food options on foot.

WHY STAY HERE?

Hotel Indigo York by IHG

Walmgate / Fossgate, York city centre

Our view

The best pick when the post-match evening is part of the trip. It sits directly on Walmgate, beside the Fossgate/Walmgate food-and-pub cluster and very close to Brew York. It also has the strongest boutique feel of the three primary choices and current reviews are very good. The catch is severe Saturday pricing in the sample and no on-site parking, so this is a quality/nightlife choice rather than the default value pick.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly in the Walmgate/Fossgate evening area rather than merely being somewhere in central York.
  • Brew York is just off Walmgate and The Hop is on Fossgate, giving supporters strong independent beer/food options on foot.
  • Booking.com returned 8.8 from 2,764 reviews in the live research connector.
  • Tripadvisor showed 4.5/5 from 2,953 reviews with strong recent praise for staff, cleanliness, comfort and location.
  • Around 20 minutes on foot from York Station, with easy city-centre bus/taxi alternatives.

Getting to the ground

Approximately 3.1 road miles in a current venue-hotel listing. Stay here for the city evening, then use the Monks Cross bus/matchday shuttle or a taxi for the ground.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel is on Walmgate itself. Brew York is just off Walmgate and The Hop is on Fossgate, with many other independent food and drink options around the same cluster.

Arriving by train

Booking.com currently describes York Railway Station as around 20 minutes on foot; bus/taxi options are easy if carrying luggage.

The trade-offs

  • Not a near-ground hotel; use Service 9/Y22/taxi for the match journey.
  • No on-site parking; IHG lists limited off-site parking nearby.
  • Some reviews mention road noise and thin walls, so a quiet-room request is sensible for light sleepers.
  • The sampled Saturday average was more than double the sampled midweek average, making value highly date-sensitive.

Research price context

Typically about £123-£135 midweek in the clean baseline sample, but roughly £255-£315 on sampled Saturdays. The weekend uplift is a York leisure-market warning rather than evidence of a football-only premium.

YOUR AWAY DAY · LNER Community Stadium

The ground

Oldham Athletic at York City

LNER is an 8,500-seat all-seater in a wider civic/leisure complex at Monks Cross. Its modernity and shared-community function are genuine advantages, while some supporters have found the emotional break from Bootham difficult. The strongest current culture-building is visible in the South Stand flags and supporter-led attempts to give the place recognisable York character.

Recorded capacity
8,500

Views from the away section

Modern covered visiting seating gives clear sightlines.

Supporter observation

York’s modern covered North Stand gives visiting supporters an unobstructed behind-goal view; the rake is steep enough to maintain good sightlines over the rows in front.

Why the ground matters

York's ground story is a before-and-after identity marker. Bootham Crescent was compact, accumulated, residential and emotionally saturated; the LNER Community Stadium is planned, shared, accessible and multi-purpose. Neither can be understood properly by reducing the comparison to 'old versus new'.

Stand features

Home of the locally named South Standers and the most explicit Trust-backed flag culture at LNER.

Current away use can switch by fixture and expected crowd, so do not hard-code one end as permanently 'the away end'.

The new ground has a designated quiet area and associated accessibility support, alongside audio devices and sensory provision.

Football sits alongside rugby league, leisure, community/library and health functions; this is central to why the venue looks and feels unlike Bootham.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Trust-backed practice introduced in 2022 to help create a visual identity at the new ground; flag approvals are operationally controlled by stadium management.

Anniversary memory events

Food & drink

Oldham Athletic at York City

York City are back in League Two for 2026/27. The ground sits at Monks Cross, over three miles from York station and the historic centre, and current club, visiting-supporter and supporter sources agree that traditional pub choice immediately around the stadium is thin.

Food and drink around the ground

The practical near-ground options are the stadium concourse, Hollywood Bowl, Pear Tree Farm and the Vangarde/Monks Cross food cluster; York also advertises a Fan Zone with food, bar and live music, but its away-supporter access is not currently published.

For train arrivals, the better pre-match choice is in central York: York Tap is an easy station meeting point, while The Hop gives proper food as well as beer, and recent York-supporter discussion identifies the Three Cranes as a home-fan gathering point. The trade-off is simple: city-centre atmosphere and choice versus near-ground convenience. Families have clearer current evidence at Pear Tree Farm, Hollywood Bowl and Vallado Lounge.

Leave enough time to move out to Monks Cross and re-check fixture-specific access and colours rules before travelling.

York Tap

Inside York station, York Tap is one of the simplest pre-match meeting points for rail arrivals. A current York away-pub guide marks it home-and-away friendly, while the venue's own site confirms a broad cask and craft range with bar nibbles rather than a full food menu.

Pear Tree Farm

Pear Tree Farm is the strongest traditional pub-and-food lead close to the stadium. A visiting-club guide from April 2026 says it is frequently used by away fans for food and a pint, while its current official page confirms a full food offer, family facilities and daily opening.

A York supporter reported it as the 'official' pre-match place for one August 2026 fixture, but that appears fixture-specific and should not be treated as a standing designation. No current football-colours policy was found.

Vallado Lounge

Vallado Lounge is a practical near-ground food option in Vangarde Leisure Park. York City's current visiting-supporter page points visitors towards it, and Vallado's own current site confirms all-day opening, walk-ins and a broad food-and-drink menu.

  • mixed groups who prioritise food over a football-pub atmosphere

No reliable current source was found stating whether football colours or away groups are accepted on York City matchdays, so it should be treated as a food lead rather than a verified away pub.

LNER Community Stadium Fan Zone

York City's current visiting-supporter page explicitly advertises a Fan Zone with food, a bar and live music. That confirms the facility exists, but the page does not state that visiting supporters are admitted.

The Hop is one of the more useful city-centre combinations of pub and food: real ale plus stone-baked pizza. A 2026 York supporter interviewed for a Sunderland fan site specifically recommended it to travelling Sunderland fans, and the venue's own current rules make the key caveat explicit: no sportswear or football colours.

Three Cranes

The Three Cranes has the strongest recent home-supporter signal found in the city centre. Before the match

Oldham Athletic at York City

Use York railway station, then the number 9 bus to Monks Cross. The stadium is around three miles from the station, so it is not a useful last-minute walk. Service 9 calls at the station and stops beside the stadium complex. The station has step-free access to every platform and staff assistance. For your return, allow for bus queues as well as the journey back into York, especially if you have a fixed train reservation.

Pre-match choices

Monks Cross has extensive food/leisure options but less traditional pub character than York city centre; travel time into the centre should be planned.

The pre-match experience

Supporter observation

Supporter discussion treats York city centre as the attraction for pre-match drinking, while noting the newer LNER Community Stadium is much less central than Bootham Crescent.

This is supporter-reported matchday information. Pub admission and matchday policy can vary by fixture, so check current details before travelling.

Buses & local travel

Take the number 9 bus if you arrive by rail or want a regular service from the city centre. It serves York station and Monks Cross Park & Ride, immediately beside the stadium, and is generally frequent during the day. For a direct football service, York Pullman's Y22 leaves Stonebow two hours before kick-off and returns after the game. The operator lists £4 adult and £2 child return fares, payable by cash or contactless.

If you are staying centrally, this is particularly handy, but plan for queues on busy matchdays. The club's older travel page shows a lower Y22 fare, so use the operator's newer price.

Parking

Oldham Athletic at York City

Book York City's matchday parking rather than counting on a free residential space. The club sets aside about 400 places at Monks Cross Park & Ride, but asks supporters to buy a ticket before travelling. It is a short walk to the ground, and a booking avoids searching around the busy retail estate. New Lane in Huntington is mentioned in visiting-supporter advice, yet council records identify waiting restrictions and past proposals affecting different parts of it.

Parking & park-and-ride

Priory Willow Glade and nearby streets have also been examined because of matchday pressure. We could not confirm a named unrestricted stretch suitable for a full match, so free on-street parking is only a possibility, not a reliable plan. Vangarde Shopping Park does allow football visitors to park for £5, but its matchday maximum is four hours. Arrivals between noon and 4pm receive only two hours free unless they pay to extend.

Allow roughly four to five hours for the whole visit, including both walks, arriving early and leaving afterwards; four hours can be too tight. Its separate twenty-minute grace period is not an invitation to overstay. Do not use the leisure-centre, cinema or ordinary Monks Cross shopping bays as unofficial stadium parking. If official spaces are sold out, a legitimately booked driveway or Monk Bar's council car park, followed by the matchday bus, is safer.

Monk Bar is open all day, though considerably dearer. For the 24 October match, allow extra time because Monks Cross Link is closed northbound towards the ring road. Expect slow exits after a busy game, and do not rely on the same route out that you used to arrive.

Driving & road restrictions

Use YO32 9AF for the stadium, but follow the signs for your particular booked car park rather than driving to the front doors. Monks Cross is north-east of York, reached from the A64 and A1237 via Malton Road or the signed local approaches. For the 24 October home game, do not rely on a clear run along Monks Cross Link. Roadworks have closed the northbound section towards the A1237 until 6 November, with diversions via Jockey Lane and Malton Road.

The shopping park warns of heavier matchday traffic on that date. Allow extra time and follow live signs, particularly on the way out.

YOUR AWAY DAY · LNER Community Stadium

Worth knowing

Oldham Athletic at York City

For an away supporter, York is interesting because the fixture now takes place in a modern EFL ground whose club memory is still anchored several miles and a whole football era away at Bootham Crescent. The matchday contrast is the story: current facilities and deliberate atmosphere-building at LNER against a support culture still processing what the old ground meant.

Matchday features

West Stand elevated wheelchair gantry. Changing Places. Shared rugby/community complex. Monks Cross amenities

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

A detail worth noticing

The South Stand flag display is one of the clearest signs that supporters are actively giving the new stadium its own visual language.

Makaton welcome/support messages on stadium screens are a small but distinctive manifestation of the community-stadium brief.

The LNER name has an accidental-looking historical echo: an LNER 'York City' locomotive nameplate once hung above the Bootham players' tunnel.

At the old Bootham site, football-linked street names and planned memorial fabric are worth noticing precisely because the place is now housing rather than a stadium.

Supporter interpretation

The former site is intended to retain terrace/tunnel fabric, memorabilia, a centre-circle marker and memorial space for ashes.

His memory bridges both grounds through the old stand, new street naming and LNER banner.

Supporter interpretation

Bootham has been explicitly studied as a place where memory and physical fabric together create heritage significance.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Parking & park-and-ride

Book York City's matchday parking rather than counting on a free residential space. The club sets aside about 400 places at Monks Cross Park & Ride, but asks supporters to buy a ticket before travelling. It is a short walk to the ground, and a booking avoids searching around the busy retail estate.

New Lane in Huntington is mentioned in visiting-supporter advice, yet council records identify waiting restrictions and past proposals affecting different parts of it.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use York railway station, then the number 9 bus to Monks Cross. The stadium is around three miles from the station, so it is not a useful last-minute walk. Service 9 calls at the station and stops beside the stadium complex.

The station has step-free access to every platform and staff assistance. For your return, allow for bus queues as well as the journey back into York, especially if you have a fixed train reservation. Check the service 9 departure board before committing to a tight connection.

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Book accessible matchday parking through York City's ticketing system before you travel, rather than assuming a Blue Badge secures a space on arrival. There are designated places within the Monks Cross allocation, but staff allocate or direct drivers when they arrive.

York station has step-free access to all platforms, and the Park & Ride buses are wheelchair accessible. At the stadium, wheelchair positions include the North and West stands, with lifts, accessible toilets and lowered catering counters. Contact the club before the fixture about your exact away block, companion ticket and route from the car park.

After the match

After the match

Leave extra time for the return from Monks Cross, especially after a well-attended Saturday game. The stadium is beside shopping traffic as well as matchday parking, and local supporters have reported delays for both the number 9 bus and the Y22 shuttle.

If you used the Y22, follow the stewarded queue to the departure point and check the driver’s return arrangements. For a booked car, follow the signed exit rather than assuming Monks Cross Link will be open northbound. Rail passengers should leave a sensible margin before any fixed train from York; the stadium is too far out for a quick walk back as a backup.

Where to stay

Stay in central York if you want somewhere to eat and drink after the match. Fossgate and Walmgate have plenty of independent places, while the station area is handier for an early train. From either base, use service 9 or make your way to Stonebow for the Y22 football shuttle.

A Malton Road hotel such as Holiday Inn Express York is a different choice: useful if you are driving and want to stay closer to Monks Cross, but less convenient for an evening in the centre. Its free parking is specifically for hotel guests, not a general matchday car park. Check your onward route before choosing it solely for ground proximity.

York City are back in League Two for 2026/27. The ground sits at Monks Cross, over three miles from York station and the historic centre, and current club, visiting-supporter and supporter sources agree that traditional pub choice immediately around the stadium is thin.

MATCHDAY INTELPear Tree Farm is the strongest traditional pub-and-food lead close to the stadium. A visiting-club guide from April 2026 says it is frequently used by away fans for food and a pint, while its current official page confirms a full food offer, family facilities and daily opening.
WORTH KNOWINGA York supporter reported it as the 'official' pre-match place for one August 2026 fixture, but that appears fixture-specific and should not be treated as a standing designation. No current football-colours policy was found.

MATCHDAY INTELThe Hop is one of the more useful city-centre combinations of pub and food: real ale plus stone-baked pizza. A 2026 York supporter interviewed for a Sunderland fan site specifically recommended it to travelling Sunderland fans, and the venue's own current rules make the key caveat explicit: no sportswear or football colours.

WORTH KNOWINGNo current official venue site or explicit football-colours policy was found. Because it is reported as a York-fan gathering point, away supporters should not assume access in colours without checking.
