FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW LUTON TOWN TO WIGAN ATHLETIC

This fixture is still months away, on 29 March. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Luton Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Recent results give Luton Town six points from a possible fifteen, with two wins and three defeats in their last five league games. Over their last five recorded league games, Wigan Athletic have taken four points from a possible fifteen: one win, one draw and three defeats. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Luton Town are 13th in League One after 10 league games, with 14 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Wigan Athletic are 24th in League One after 10 league games, with 7 points.

The destination is The Brick Community Stadium in Wigan. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For the simplest football overnight, stay west of the ground at Holiday Inn Express Wigan: it is a genuine walk-to-the-stadium option and has the strongest current quality evidence. If arriving by train or wanting pubs, food and a later evening, base yourself around Wallgate/town centre and accept a roughly 20-25 minute walk or short taxi back from the stadium. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

For Luton Town supporters, the point of the trip is being there for the team. Once tickets and kick-off are confirmed, work out whether the journey home leaves time for a meal or a drink, or whether a night away makes the better day of it.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Holiday Inn Express - Wigan by IHG

Holiday Inn Express - Wigan by IHG

Martland Mill / northwest of Brick Community Stadium

The strongest all-round football stay in Wigan. It is close enough to walk to the Brick without building the trip around taxis, current guest evidence is substantially stronger than the cheaper town-centre alternatives, and free parking plus the included breakfast make the headline room price more useful than it first appears.

  • IHG describes the Brick Community Stadium as about a 20-minute walk; Booking.com gives roughly 22 minutes.
  • Recent review evidence repeatedly praises cleanliness, friendly staff, comfortable rooms and value.
The match journey

A practical matchday walk. IHG describes a roughly 20-minute route towards the stadium; Booking.com gives about 22 minutes. The straight-line separation is shorter, but the supporter-facing estimate uses the actual walking guidance.

The trade-off

The immediate Martland Mill/business-park setting has limited pub and restaurant choice compared with central Wigan.

WHY STAY HERE?

Holiday Inn Express - Wigan by IHG

Martland Mill / northwest of Brick Community Stadium

Our view

The strongest all-round football stay in Wigan. It is close enough to walk to the Brick without building the trip around taxis, current guest evidence is substantially stronger than the cheaper town-centre alternatives, and free parking plus the included breakfast make the headline room price more useful than it first appears. The compromise is the setting: Martland Mill is practical rather than sociable, so this is the match-first choice, not the best place to continue the night.

Why it suits this trip

  • IHG describes the Brick Community Stadium as about a 20-minute walk; Booking.com gives roughly 22 minutes.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the property was showing 8.8/10 from roughly 1,788 reviews during the research check.
  • Recent review evidence repeatedly praises cleanliness, friendly staff, comfortable rooms and value.
  • Free parking and the standard Holiday Inn Express breakfast reduce the total cost of a one-night football trip.
  • It avoids relying on post-match town-centre transport if the priority is simply getting back to the room after full time.

Getting to the ground

A practical matchday walk. IHG describes a roughly 20-minute route towards the stadium; Booking.com gives about 22 minutes. The straight-line separation is shorter, but the supporter-facing estimate uses the actual walking guidance.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel has its own bar/food offer, but the immediate area is functional and lacks the choice found around Wallgate and King Street. A taxi into central Wigan is the better plan for a proper post-match evening.

Arriving by train

Not a station-front hotel. Best for drivers or supporters happy to use a short taxi/ride connection between the stations and Martland Mill.

The trade-offs

  • The immediate Martland Mill/business-park setting has limited pub and restaurant choice compared with central Wigan.
  • Rail arrivals are less convenient than at Wallgate; the two main Wigan stations are better treated as a taxi or onward-journey connection.
  • The hotel's local site advertises a shorter stadium walk, but IHG and Booking.com give 20-22 minutes; MatchdayHotels uses the more conservative figure.

Research price context

Typically about £90-£99 midweek and roughly £86-£97 on the sampled non-home-match Saturdays. Across this sample there was no meaningful weekend premium, and breakfast was included.

Swan & Railway Hotel Wigan

Swan & Railway Hotel Wigan

Wallgate / Wigan town centre

The nightlife choice because it solves the train-and-evening part of the trip better than any other verified Booking.com option found: it is opposite Wigan North Western, moments from Wallgate, has a proper pub downstairs and leaves King Street and the central food/drink circuit within easy reach. It is deliberately not the overall recommendation.

  • Immediately opposite Wigan North Western and around 100 yards from Wigan Wallgate according to the hotel.
  • A pub/hotel rather than a sterile edge-of-town sleep stop, with cask beer, food and live sport on site.
The match journey

Booking.com gives an approximate 1.9 km relationship to the stadium. It is a practical town-centre-to-ground walk for most supporters, with a short taxi as the easy fallback.

The trade-off

Rail noise is a genuine structural risk for light sleepers because of the station-side location.

WHY STAY HERE?

Swan & Railway Hotel Wigan

Wallgate / Wigan town centre

Our view

The nightlife choice because it solves the train-and-evening part of the trip better than any other verified Booking.com option found: it is opposite Wigan North Western, moments from Wallgate, has a proper pub downstairs and leaves King Street and the central food/drink circuit within easy reach. It is deliberately not the overall recommendation. The Booking.com score is only middling and recent guest comments make rail noise and inconsistent service/maintenance material considerations.

Why it suits this trip

  • Immediately opposite Wigan North Western and around 100 yards from Wigan Wallgate according to the hotel.
  • A pub/hotel rather than a sterile edge-of-town sleep stop, with cask beer, food and live sport on site.
  • Town-centre location puts King Street, restaurants and other pubs within a short walk.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified.
  • Booking.com places the stadium at about 1.9 km, making a roughly 20-25 minute walk or short taxi realistic.

Getting to the ground

Booking.com gives an approximate 1.9 km relationship to the stadium. It is a practical town-centre-to-ground walk for most supporters, with a short taxi as the easy fallback.

Pubs and the evening

One of the best-located hotel options for carrying on after the match: pub on site, both stations outside, and the main central nightlife/food streets close by.

Arriving by train

Exceptional for rail arrivals: the hotel says it is immediately opposite North Western and about 100 yards from Wallgate.

The trade-offs

  • Rail noise is a genuine structural risk for light sleepers because of the station-side location.
  • Recent guest feedback is more mixed than Holiday Inn Express, including complaints about service, room maintenance, cold water and housekeeping.
  • A pub/station setting is inherently busier and less predictable for quiet than a purpose-built business hotel.

Research price context

The six sampled baseline nights all returned £90 for two adults/one room, so the researched snapshot showed no weekend premium. That unusual flatness should not be treated as a guarantee of future pricing.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Brick Community Stadium

The ground

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

A modern, four-stand stadium rather than an old terrace maze. Its character is therefore carried less by eccentric architecture than by the things layered onto it: the Whelan statue, the Tree and Crown colours, the Warriors groundshare, the local-charity stadium name, supporter spaces and the Heritage Museum. On a routine League One day it can feel spacious; on a derby or major cup day its size becomes an asset.

Views from the away section

The North Stand is a large, conventional behind-goal away end with a clear view and no notable pillar obstruction. Specialist guides consistently describe the playing-surface view as very good, and the broad single-tier layout means the main difference seat-to-seat is height rather than obstruction.

Why the ground matters

The Brick Community Stadium is the physical proof of Wigan Athletic's late-1990s transformation. Springfield Park represented the long non-League and early Football League struggle; the new ground represented Whelan-era ambition and made Premier League crowds possible. Because it is shared with Wigan Warriors, it also places football and rugby league inside the same civic building.

Its scale can look excessive on quieter days, which supporters themselves have joked about, but it has also held more than 25,000 for the biggest football occasions.

Stand features

The statue stands by the West Stand reception, foregrounding the owner most associated with the club's rise.

A 2025 matchday guide described a Family Zone and a museum of shirts, programmes and other material in the East Stand area.

Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors have shared the venue since it opened in 1999.

Supporter interpretation

The size is a reminder of the Premier League-era ambition; the record football crowd was 25,133 against Manchester United in 2008.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Brick Community Stadium

Atmosphere & acoustics

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

The size of the North Stand is both its strength and weakness. A big travelling following can fill a large block behind the goal and make serious noise; when the away following or overall crowd is smaller, the roomy stadium can feel much less intense.

From the supporters

Supporter observation

The large North Stand can feel very different depending on how many travelling supporters occupy it: a recent away review found the steep view acceptable but the atmosphere flat when a rescheduled fixture left big gaps in the away following.

Atmosphere varies with attendance, allocation and the fixture; treat this as supporter experience rather than a guarantee.

Supporters Club presence at the stadium

A 2025 club matchday guide placed the Official Supporters Club bar in the South Stand, reflecting the organisation's continued matchday visibility after its 2020 rescue role.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Brick Community Stadium

Food & drink

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

Wigan is best treated as two stops: meet by Wigan North Western and Wallgate if travelling by train, then leave enough time for the roughly 25-minute walk to the Brick Community Stadium. Wigan Central is the standout railway-arches beer stop; the Swan & Railway is directly opposite North Western. For a proper taste of town, grab a meat-and-potato pie or pie barm from Galloways on Wallgate.

Food and drink around the ground

The Red Robin gives you a meal and a pint much nearer the ground, although it is busy when football is on. Visiting fans normally enter the Calisen North Stand. The ticket-controlled Marquee bar underneath it is handy, but only opens for selected fixtures, and the start time changes. Around town, John Bull Chophouse and the Anvil suit real-ale drinkers; the Brickmakers is a home-supporter local, not somewhere to promise an away group.

For overnight trips, stay near the stations for the easiest rail return or central Wigan for more dinner choices. Check admission rules before a derby, particularly with Bolton.

Wigan Central

The best first pint off the train: seven changing real ales, ciders and a railway-arch setting, with both Wigan stations virtually on the doorstep. Have a pork pie, then allow time for the walk.

Buses & local travel

Walking from Wigan's railway stations is straightforward if you are comfortable with a 20–30-minute journey. YOUR AWAY DAY · The Brick Community Stadium

Parking

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

For most visiting drivers, use the official £7 Away Car Park 1 at The Brick Community Stadium. You can pre-book through the club's linked parking service or pay on the day if space remains. It is beside the Calisen North Stand, so this is the simplest choice for families or anyone wanting a short walk. If you would rather save the money, use Trencherfield Mill Car Park, WN3 4EH, near Wigan Pier.

Parking & park-and-ride

Wigan Council confirms free parking there on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with £3 all-day parking on weekdays. Allow roughly 20–30 minutes to reach the visiting entrance and use the public roads and signed walking routes towards Robin Park. We could not confirm any specific unrestricted section of Miry Lane, Martland Mill or the nearby residential streets. Fans report parking around these areas, but reports do not establish legal permission.

Wigan's controlled zones, yellow lines and on-street signs still apply. As a fallback, Water Street multi-storey is another council car park free at weekends. Its weekday charges are £4.80 for four hours or £6.40 for five hours; it means a longer walk than the official away car park. Check its opening arrangements before an evening fixture. Arrive around 90 minutes before kick-off if you have not booked, and allow four to five hours for a complete visit.

The adjacent Robin Park retail car parks are not authorised football parking: a normal shopping time limit will not cover the match and both walks. After full-time, expect possible queues leaving Stadium Way. The longer walk back to Trencherfield Mill can avoid waiting inside the stadium car parks, but neither journey guarantees a clear drive home.

Parking verdict
Free council car-park parking is realistic on weekends, with £7 official parking a practical closer alternative; no specific residential free street is verified
Free option — Trencherfield Mill
Council car park at Wigan Pier, WN3 4EH; free Saturday, Sunday and bank holidays; £3 all day Monday–Friday
Legal restrictions — Trencherfield Mill
Weekend free concession is for the council car park, not surrounding roads or reserved residential bays
Walk — Trencherfield Mill
Approx 20 minutes to stadium area according to independent walking guide; allow 20–30 minutes to the visiting North Stand
More practical details 10
Matchday availability — Trencherfield Mill
No confirmed reserved space or matchday capacity; first-come parking and event demand can affect availability
Matchday availability — Miry Lane / Martland Mill
Older fans report some free industrial-area parking, but no legal section or dependable matchday availability established
Paid fallback — official Car Park 1

Paid fallback — Water Street multi-storey
Free Saturday/Sunday; weekday up to four hours £4.80, five hours £6.40; confirm opening for late fixtures
Booking recommendation
Booking Car Park 1 is convenient for close parking; Trencherfield Mill does not offer a reserved bay
Arrive by — no reservation
Practical editorial allowance: aim to park about 90 minutes before kick-off; not an official space guarantee
Supermarket permission/time limit
Wigan Athletic advises against parking on the adjacent retail park; football parking permission and a valid four-to-five-hour stay not established
Total dwell time
Allow about 4–5 hours, covering arrival, both walks, match, interval, stoppages and departure; longer if visiting pubs or if a cup tie has extra time
Legal restrictions — local streets
Council lists three town-centre CPZ areas and explains yellow-line/permit enforcement. No individual unrestricted stadium-area road section was established
After the match
Stadium car-park exit congestion is supporter-reported; Trencherfield trades a longer walk for avoiding the immediate car-park queues

Driving & road restrictions

Set your sat-nav to WN5 0UN for Stadium Way and the official supporter car parks. Do not use the main-reception postcode WN5 0UZ if your destination is Car Park 1, as this leads to Loire Drive instead. Wigan Athletic advises drivers approaching from the south to leave the M6 at junction 25, or from the north at junction 27. From the east, its directions use M61 junction 6.

Follow matchday signs rather than taking a shortcut through adjacent residential or retail areas. Temporary pedestrian bridge restrictions have been announced for individual fixtures, including Walmsley Bridge on 1 January 2026. No equivalent closure can be assumed for a future match: check the matchday notice for the actual date.

Comfort & weather

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

Facilities and sightlines are generally very good, with a substantial concourse beneath the stand. Wigan also operates an away-supporter Marquee beneath the North Stand for selected/current matchdays, giving visiting fans an unusual pre-kick-off indoor option; its opening should still be rechecked for the specific fixture.

Shelter and exposure

Supporter observation

Current Wycombe supporter guidance describes Wigan's North Stand as covered with good facilities, concourse TVs and food kiosks.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · The Brick Community Stadium

Worth knowing

Luton Town at Wigan Athletic

The modern ground shared with Warriors was built during Wigan's rise towards Premier League football. Springfield Park memories, decades of non-League persistence, the FA Cup win and recent supporter rescue remain close to the story told around it.

Matchday features

Dedicated away Marquee Bar. Shared rugby venue. Multiple accessible platforms. Car-park egress caveat

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

A detail worth noticing

The old ground was Wigan Athletic's home from 1932 until 1999 and had already hosted predecessor clubs. Its Main Stand burned down in 1953.

The first new-stadium friendly, in torrential rain against Morecambe, and the unfinished East Stand at the Manchester United opening make the move feel less like a polished corporate launch and more like a club growing into its new scale.

The 2024 stadium name connects the building to a local homelessness and poverty charity, giving the current name a civic meaning beyond commercial naming rights.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Away coaches

If you are travelling on an official away supporters' coach, follow your operator's arrival instructions for The Brick Community Stadium. The club directs visiting supporters' vehicles to Car Park 1 off Stadium Way, and asks coach operators to pre-book or notify stadium staff wherever possible.

The published coach charge is £24, compared with £13 for a minibus. If the coach carries wheelchair users, contact Wigan in advance because the small allocation of accessible coach positions requires early booking.

Agree the exact departure point and boarding time with your operator before leaving the coach. A universal post-match collection bay has not been independently confirmed for every fixture.

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible parking with Wigan Athletic before travelling, rather than relying on an unreserved space in Car Park 1. The club lists a limited number of designated bays at Robin Park Arena, bookable through the ticket office on 01942 311111.

Wheelchair viewing platforms, accessible toilets and lift access are available in the stands, including the visiting North Stand. Contact the disability liaison team before buying tickets if you need a particular position or an accessible arrival route.

Both town-centre railway stations have step-free provision, although Wallgate has limited lift operating hours. The club also offers audio-commentary headsets and ear defenders against refundable deposits; request assistance in advance.

After the match

After the match

If you are parked in Car Park 1, expect some delay as cars leave Stadium Way after full-time. Fan reports describe congestion around the stadium, especially with larger travelling followings, although no reliable queue time applies to every match.

For an alternative, walking back to Trencherfield Mill keeps your vehicle outside the immediate stadium car parks. Allow at least the outward walking time and use well-lit public routes after an evening fixture.

If travelling by train, check your last connection before kick-off. The town-centre stations are a substantial walk from the North Stand, and Wallgate's lift operating hours may affect passengers needing step-free access.

Where to stay

Stay around Wallgate and central Wigan if you are arriving by rail or want food and drinks after the match. Both stations are here, and the ground is a manageable walk or short local bus journey away.

If proximity to the stadium matters more than the town-centre evening, Holiday Inn Express Wigan at Martland Mill is an alternative. The hotel describes the Brick Community Stadium as around a 20-minute walk and provides on-site parking for guests.

A hotel is unnecessary for most day trips. For evening games or long-distance rail journeys, compare your actual last train with the walk back before deciding to stay.

Read full overview Hide full overview

Wigan is best treated as two stops: meet by Wigan North Western and Wallgate if travelling by train, then leave enough time for the roughly 25-minute walk to the Brick Community Stadium. Wigan Central is the standout railway-arches beer stop; the Swan & Railway is directly opposite North Western. For a proper taste of town, grab a meat-and-potato pie or pie barm from Galloways on Wallgate.
