FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW HUDDERSFIELD TOWN TO READING

This fixture is still months away, on 24 April. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Huddersfield Town are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Huddersfield Town are 2nd in League One after 11 league games, with 22 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders.

Reading are 6th in League One after 11 league games, with 18 points.

Huddersfield Town's last five recorded league games brought three wins, one draw and one defeat: ten points from a possible fifteen. Recent results give Reading eight points from a possible fifteen, with two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five league games. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

The destination is Select Car Leasing Stadium in Reading. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most rail-arriving supporters staying overnight, base yourself around Reading Station, Friar Street or the central shopping/nightlife streets and use the F1 matchday bus. If minimising matchday walking matters more than the evening, use the stadium/Green Park corridor. Hilton Reading is the strongest compromise between those two extremes. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

Make the football the reason to go and give yourself enough time to enjoy it. Check the confirmed kick-off and ticket arrangements before committing to travel or a hotel, then choose the plan that lets you support Huddersfield Town from the away end without rushing the whole day.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Hilton Reading

Hilton Reading

Green Park / A33 corridor

Hilton Reading is the most convincing all-rounder rather than the most obvious one. It is close enough to walk to the stadium without basing yourself inside the stadium complex, has a materially stronger current reputation than many cheaper central options, and the sampled weekend prices were competitive for a four-star.

  • Approximately 1.1 km / 17 minutes on foot to Select Car Leasing Stadium in current mapping/travel listings, making it realistically walkable for most supporters.
  • Strong recent reputation: Tripadvisor 4.3/5 from 2,607 reviews in the live lookup, with recent September 2026 reviews repeatedly praising staff, cleanliness, comfort and leisure facilities.
The match journey

A practical walk for most supporters and much closer than town-centre hotels. The route sits in the A33/Green Park corridor rather than a pub-heavy football neighbourhood.

The trade-off

Not in the main Friar Street/Gun Street nightlife area; a bus or taxi is the practical choice for a bigger post-match evening.

WHY STAY HERE?

Hilton Reading

Green Park / A33 corridor

Our view

Hilton Reading is the most convincing all-rounder rather than the most obvious one. It is close enough to walk to the stadium without basing yourself inside the stadium complex, has a materially stronger current reputation than many cheaper central options, and the sampled weekend prices were competitive for a four-star. It is not the hotel for stepping straight into Friar Street after the match, but it balances match access, room quality and price better than the alternatives.

Why it suits this trip

  • Approximately 1.1 km / 17 minutes on foot to Select Car Leasing Stadium in current mapping/travel listings, making it realistically walkable for most supporters.
  • Strong recent reputation: Tripadvisor 4.3/5 from 2,607 reviews in the live lookup, with recent September 2026 reviews repeatedly praising staff, cleanliness, comfort and leisure facilities.
  • Booking.com was verified in live searches and showed an 8.4/10 review score with more than 1,200 reviews.
  • Non-match weekend sample averaged about £86, which is good value for this quality level in Reading.
  • Indoor pool, sauna/steam and restaurant make it more useful for an overnight football trip than a basic roadside room.

Getting to the ground

A practical walk for most supporters and much closer than town-centre hotels. The route sits in the A33/Green Park corridor rather than a pub-heavy football neighbourhood.

Pubs and the evening

Better than the stadium hotel as an all-round base, but still outside the core nightlife streets. Plan on a bus or taxi for a late central evening.

Arriving by train

Reading Green Park is nearby; Reading main station is the better hub for inter-city arrivals and the dedicated matchday F1 service.

The trade-offs

  • Not in the main Friar Street/Gun Street nightlife area; a bus or taxi is the practical choice for a bigger post-match evening.
  • Hilton currently charges for on-site self-parking, which weakens the value proposition for drivers.
  • The immediate setting is an urban/business corridor rather than a characterful football or nightlife district.

Research price context

Typically about £105 midweek in the sample (£84–£125), dropping to roughly £86 on sampled non-match weekend nights (£81–£92).

voco Reading by IHG

voco Reading by IHG

Select Car Leasing Stadium / Green Park

If the priority is to be at the ground with almost no matchday logistics, this is the obvious choice: voco Reading is directly adjacent to the stadium and is a proper four-star hotel rather than a basic event-night bed. The catch is the location. Once the football finishes, the wider Reading evening is in the town centre, and the hotel's own current transport page confirms there is no local-area shuttle.

  • Directly adjacent to Select Car Leasing Stadium; IHG lists the stadium at around 0.15 miles.
  • The hotel explicitly caters to matchday visitors, including pre-match dining.
The match journey

Effectively a stadium hotel. It is the only primary choice where the walk to the turnstiles is negligible.

The trade-off

Weakest of the primary choices for pubs, bars and restaurants beyond the hotel itself.

Select Car Leasing Stadium / Green Park

Our view

If the priority is to be at the ground with almost no matchday logistics, this is the obvious choice: voco Reading is directly adjacent to the stadium and is a proper four-star hotel rather than a basic event-night bed. The catch is the location. Once the football finishes, the wider Reading evening is in the town centre, and the hotel's own current transport page confirms there is no local-area shuttle. More importantly, Booking.com did not return the hotel on any of the three checked Reading home-match nights, so early booking is particularly important.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly adjacent to Select Car Leasing Stadium; IHG lists the stadium at around 0.15 miles.
  • The hotel explicitly caters to matchday visitors, including pre-match dining.
  • Booking.com profile was 8.7/10 with more than 1,600 reviews; recent cleanliness, comfort and staff scores are strong.
  • Recent Tripadvisor reviews repeatedly praise large rooms, beds, breakfast, staff and leisure facilities.
  • Best option for supporters with mobility concerns around a long post-match walk, subject to room availability.

Getting to the ground

Effectively a stadium hotel. It is the only primary choice where the walk to the turnstiles is negligible.

Pubs and the evening

The immediate stadium/Green Park setting is not Reading's nightlife hub. Use matchday/public transport or taxi into the centre.

Arriving by train

Reading Green Park is the nearest rail station to the stadium area; local guidance puts the station-to-stadium walk at about 15 minutes.

The trade-offs

  • Weakest of the primary choices for pubs, bars and restaurants beyond the hotel itself.
  • No hotel local-area shuttle; town-centre nightlife needs public transport or a taxi.
  • Booking.com availability disappeared on all three sampled Reading home-match nights, so the hotel may be hard to secure precisely when football demand is highest.
  • One recent review specifically described bar prices as expensive.

Research price context

Very variable in the sample: about £113 midweek overall (£78–£163) and roughly £87 on sampled non-match weekend nights (£79–£91).

Novotel Reading Centre

Novotel Reading Centre

Reading town centre / Friar Street

Novotel is the strongest choice when the football trip includes a proper night in Reading. It sits on Friar Street, close to both the station and the town's main late-night cluster, so the supporter can arrive by rail, leave bags, use the F1 matchday bus and come back to the centre without another hotel transfer.

  • On Friar Street, one of Reading's main late-night streets.
  • Accor places Reading Station only a few minutes away, which is useful for both rail arrivals and the F1 matchday shuttle.
The match journey

The stadium is south of the centre. The practical matchday plan is the dedicated F1 shuttle from the station area or train to Reading Green Park plus the final walk.

The trade-off

Not a practical stadium walk for most supporters; use the F1 matchday bus or Reading Green Park rail connection.

WHY STAY HERE?

Novotel Reading Centre

Reading town centre / Friar Street

Our view

Novotel is the strongest choice when the football trip includes a proper night in Reading. It sits on Friar Street, close to both the station and the town's main late-night cluster, so the supporter can arrive by rail, leave bags, use the F1 matchday bus and come back to the centre without another hotel transfer. The downside is exactly what makes it good for nightlife: recent reviews repeatedly mention street noise, and the on-site parking is limited and expensive.

Why it suits this trip

  • On Friar Street, one of Reading's main late-night streets.
  • Accor places Reading Station only a few minutes away, which is useful for both rail arrivals and the F1 matchday shuttle.
  • Pool, sauna and gym add useful four-star facilities for an overnight stay.
  • Recent Tripadvisor reviews strongly support the central location and friendly staff.
  • Non-match weekend sample sat tightly around the high-£80s, making it competitive with less central four-star hotels.

Getting to the ground

The stadium is south of the centre. The practical matchday plan is the dedicated F1 shuttle from the station area or train to Reading Green Park plus the final walk.

Pubs and the evening

This is the best-located primary hotel for pubs, bars and late-night venues, with the wider Oracle Riverside food-and-drink area also walkable.

Arriving by train

Very close to Reading Station, making arrival/departure simple and putting the matchday F1 shuttle within a short walk.

The trade-offs

  • Not a practical stadium walk for most supporters; use the F1 matchday bus or Reading Green Park rail connection.
  • Nightlife/street noise is a recurring current review theme; request a quieter room if sleep is a priority.
  • On-site parking is limited, must be pre-booked, and Accor currently quotes £21 per night.
  • Booking.com overall score is a respectable rather than standout 7.9/10.

Research price context

Typically around £109 midweek in the sample (£93–£123), with sampled non-match weekend nights around £88 (£86–£92).

YOUR AWAY DAY · Select Car Leasing Stadium

The ground

Huddersfield Town at Reading

The enclosed modern bowl gives clear views and a functional away section. Club 1871, STAR heritage displays, memorial work and the Madejski association add local memories. Supporter accounts often measure those additions against Elm Park's inherited rough edges.

Recorded capacity
24,161

Views from the away section

Away views and legroom are consistently good.

Supporter observation

Reading’s away section is one of the easier modern sections to watch from: visiting guidance highlights very good whole-pitch sightlines, generous legroom and enough row height to reduce obstruction from people in front.

Why the ground matters

Reading left Elm Park after deciding in the 1990s that its limitations restricted their ambitions. The current stadium enabled top-flight football while ending 102 years at a cramped urban ground. Fans' accounts still weigh those gains against what they miss.

South Stand / Club 1871

The main concentrated vocal home section sits in the South Stand; away fans are positioned immediately alongside.

Eamonn Dolan Stand

The north end carries the name of the late academy figure Eamonn Dolan; the stand name is part of the stadium's club-specific memory.

Sir John Madejski Stand

The east side preserves the name most associated with the stadium's creation and the club's modern rise.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Huddersfield Town at Reading

The bowl can carry noise but often needs a strong crowd to feel intense.

URZ / the R's

Short vocal/written supporter shorthand connected to the club's name.

They Call Us the Royals

Supporter interpretation

2015 owner-written club song; notable chiefly for its awkward reception rather than for becoming a durable terrace standard.

Club 1871 singing section

South Stand concentration of vocal support designed to keep noise going through the game.

Raise the Hoops / No13 supporter displays

Organised supporter visual culture deliberately reinforcing the idea that fans form part of the club identity.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Select Car Leasing Stadium

Food & drink

Huddersfield Town at Reading

Arriving by train, meet at the Three Guineas beside Reading station: the club explicitly welcomes away supporters there, and the F1 football bus leaves from Station Hill. For a better beer selection, Siren RG1 is a couple of minutes away; Oakford is a livelier choice if you are staying overnight. Colour policies elsewhere in town are not guaranteed. The Select Car Leasing Stadium is well south of the centre, so do not expect a strip of pubs outside the away end.

Food and drink around the ground

The Holiday Inn bar and World Turned Upside Down on Basingstoke Road are the club’s named alternatives; otherwise the mixed-supporter Fan Zone and South Stand kiosks are easiest. The away allocation uses the South Stand and, for larger followings, Upper West. Eat in town if time allows. Blue Collar Corner brings burgers, sandwiches and tacos, Sweeney & Todd has Reading’s signature pies, and Tasty Greek Souvlaki is a quick meal near the station.

New City Fish Bar is a Whitley detour, not a station stop. Check Blue Collar’s weekend-only opening and match-specific access before travelling.

Accessibility

Huddersfield Town at Reading

Contact Reading FC before travelling if you need an accessible parking space or a specific route into the away section. The club’s accessibility statement identifies Gate 10 as the step-free visiting entrance and 15 away wheelchair positions in the South Stand. Ask your ticketing club to confirm the arrangements for your allocation.

Accessible journeys

Reading Green Park railway station has step-free access to both platforms, but the final journey to the stadium takes longer on the accessible walking route. The club lists limited pre-bookable accessible parking in its Orange area and says a Blue Badge holder must travel in the vehicle. For parking prices and availability, use the Reading accessibility team rather than an older guide’s tariff. Call 0118 968 1313, option 2, or email disability@readingfc.co.uk.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Either change onto a Reading–Basingstoke service for Green Park or use the dedicated F1 matchday bus from the station area. The bus avoids a lengthy walk along the A33 corridor, but queues after full-time are possible. Both Reading and Reading Green Park stations have step-free access to all platforms and lifts. Check your last train carefully for evening and cup games; the short Green Park connection does not remove the need to connect back onto your onward route.

Station to ground & away entrance

Go to the South Stand if your away ticket lists blocks R30–R32. Gate 10 is the usual entrance, including accessible entry. Larger allocations can extend into the Upper West Stand, where visiting supporters are directed to Gate 11; follow the gate printed on your ticket rather than the nearest visible turnstile.

From Reading Green Park station, take the signed pedestrian route towards the stadium and allow roughly 15 minutes before walking round to your allocated gate. From the F1 or F3 football bus stops, follow the stewarded pedestrian approaches around the stadium. Do not cut across private business car parks to save a few minutes. The ground is beside the A33, not in the town-centre streets around Reading station.

Arrive with time to find the correct side of the stadium, especially when both away areas are in use or queues build at the turnstiles.

Buses & local travel

Catch the F1 football shuttle from Reading station for the simplest bus journey to the ground. Reading Buses lists a £6 adult return for 2026/27, and football tickets must be bought separately from ordinary bus tickets. The service normally runs before and after league fixtures, but check your specific kick-off. If you are parking south of the M4, Mereoak Park & Ride uses the dedicated F3 football bus.

A £7.50 adult return includes parking, and the group ticket is £11 for up to five passengers with no more than three adults. That can make it better value than five separate fares. The ordinary Mereoak 600/650 routes and their £4 promotional returns are not the F3 matchday shuttle. For cup ties, check whether football specials are running at all; Reading cancelled them for at least one 2026 EFL Trophy fixture.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Select Car Leasing Stadium

Parking

Huddersfield Town at Reading

Do not plan your Reading away day around free street parking. The stadium sits among business parks and restricted retail parking, and no named road could be verified as unrestricted for a full match. Booking is optional if you arrive early and have a fallback. The best low-cost option is Reading Green Park Station car park, Flagstaff Road, RG2 6DN.

Parking & park-and-ride

It is £2.80 for six hours, open around the clock, with a roughly 15-minute walk to the stadium and extra time needed for the away entrance. There are only 57 spaces, with no pre-booking, so arrive early and have a backup. Kirston Farm Road and Imperial Way crop up in supporter suggestions for free parking. Neither has sufficiently current, side-by-side restriction evidence to recommend a particular stretch.

Reading council warns that parking-zone maps do not establish the rules for every street, and on-street signs and markings govern each bay. For a dependable backup close to the ground, Reading FC lists Car Park 6, RG2 0RP, at £15 with advance or on-day card payment, subject to space. Drivers approaching from the south can use Mereoak and its £7.50 adult football-bus return, including parking.

Allow at least four hours for arrival, both walks, the match and getting back to your car. Ordinary Reading Gate and other retail spaces are not free matchday parking: local reports describe a particularly short matchday limit there. A four-hour retail limit, even where advertised, is not a substitute for written football-parking permission. For a Saturday afternoon, get to Green Park early rather than circling its surrounding roads when the small car park fills.

Weekday games can compete with commuter parking, and some cup games lack the usual football shuttles. Stadium and A33 traffic can also delay departure, so do not plan a tight onward journey.

Parking verdict
Book official/private parking if certainty matters; otherwise arrive early for low-cost Green Park Station car park. No named free street is legally verified for a full matchday visit.

Select Car Leasing Stadium is signed from M4 Junction 11 via the A33, but Car Park 6, Green Park Station and Mereoak each have different entrances. Choose your parking before reaching the junction to avoid a late change of direction. For Car Park 6, use RG2 0RP and follow the operator’s current access signs. For Green Park Station, use Flagstaff Road, RG2 6DN.

For Mereoak, use RG7 1PB south of M4 Junction 11; older away guides incorrectly attach a different postcode to this site. Expect heavy traffic around the A33, stadium roundabouts and surrounding business parks. Worth knowing

Huddersfield Town at Reading

The modern away section offers a different experience from old Elm Park. Club 1871 nearby gives visiting fans a closer exchange with home support, while heritage displays and memorials show how supporters have made the newer stadium their own.

Matchday features

15 visiting wheelchair positions. Mixed fan zone/live music. Comfortable sightlines

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

A clear, pillar-free view and decent legroom

The current guide consistently treats the South Stand away section as comfortable by EFL standards.

The vocal home section is next door

Club 1871 is immediately alongside the away area, so the atmosphere is intentionally concentrated at the same end.

The old club is not visually obvious until you look

Supporter interpretation

The bowl itself is modern; the Reading-specific layers are the supporter displays, stand names, badge symbolism and the knowledge that Elm Park sat at the centre of club life for 102 years.

Club 1871's position beside the away support

It is a deliberate atmosphere arrangement: the loudest home section and visiting support can answer each other directly.

The Madejski name has not disappeared

Although the stadium naming rights changed, the Sir John Madejski Stand and club memory keep the former chairman's name present.

Heritage is added rather than inherited

Look for supporter-funded historical displays and memorial elements: much of the stadium's Reading-specific character has been consciously installed since 1998.

Elm Park memory

Supporter interpretation

The new ground makes most sense in contrast with the 102-year former home; supporters frequently assess atmosphere and belonging through that comparison.

Supporter-created displays

STAR has funded Hall of Fame material and memorial features that put club history into the stadium rather than leaving the bowl visually generic.

Asset of Community Value

The stadium's legal community status since 2023 gives the ground a governance story as well as an architectural one.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

For most longer-distance journeys, Reading main station will be simpler.

Coaches

Away coaches

If you are travelling on an organised away coach, follow the coach organiser’s instructions rather than heading for a public car park. A previous Reading visiting-supporter guide describes free away-coach parking close to the ground, with additional coaches placed a short walk away when more vehicles attend.

The exact 2026/27 coach approach, drop-off and return meeting point could not be independently confirmed. Ask your travel organiser to obtain the current allocation from Reading FC and to tell you whether to return to the drop-off spot or a different pickup area.

Leave enough time after the match to reach the coach before departure. Car and coach movements can be managed around the stadium while spectators and football buses clear, so a coach parked close to the gate will not necessarily leave quickly.

Away-coach parking in earlier club guidance
Historically free, described as within 50 yards for smaller allocations and within five minutes for larger allocations; recheck per fixture
Organiser confirmation
Coach organiser should confirm the fixture-specific stand, entry route, parking and pickup with Reading FC
Private cars versus coaches
Stadium parking may be held temporarily after full-time for pedestrian, bus and coach safety
Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Contact Reading FC before travelling if you need an accessible parking space or a specific route into the away section. The club’s accessibility statement identifies Gate 10 as the step-free visiting entrance and 15 away wheelchair positions in the South Stand. Ask your ticketing club to confirm the arrangements for your allocation.

Reading FC has also described a limited Readibus-supported door-to-door service which must be arranged ahead of the fixture.

After the match

After the match

If you need to catch a train, aim first for the Reading Green Park connection or the F1 return bus, then allow time for your onward service from Reading. Use the current bus operator’s departure information rather than assuming the last departure printed in an older club guide still applies.

Drivers using the stadium’s own car parks should expect a slow start. Reading has previously held vehicles back for roughly 20 minutes to let pedestrians and buses clear, with further congestion around the A33. A parking spot closest to the stadium entrance is not necessarily the quickest way home.

Green Park Station parking means a short walk back to your car without joining the car park queues immediately beside the ground. Mereoak is more straightforward if you are heading south on the M4 corridor, but queues for the F3 bus can offset that advantage after a busy game.

F1 post-match option
Return football bus to Reading station; service timing must be checked for specific fixture
F3 post-match option

Where to stay

Stay near Reading station or in the town centre if you want a straightforward overnight away trip. You will have rail connections, a better selection of pubs and restaurants, and the F1 matchday bus to the stadium without needing to keep a car near the ground.

If being close to the match is more important than nightlife, the stadium and Green Park corridor are convenient. Hotels such as voco Reading sit at the stadium, while Hilton Reading is farther up the A33. Check parking rights separately: a hotel booking does not automatically include permission to leave a car for the match.

For an evening out, the station, Friar Street and Oracle Riverside areas make more sense than the stadium retail park. The journey back from the football is a separate consideration, so check F1 running times and rail connections before committing to a late return home.

Near-stadium base

Arriving by train, meet at the Three Guineas beside Reading station: the club explicitly welcomes away supporters there, and the F1 football bus leaves from Station Hill. For a better beer selection, Siren RG1 is a couple of minutes away; Oakford is a livelier choice if you are staying overnight. Colour policies elsewhere in town are not guaranteed. The Select Car Leasing Stadium is well south of the centre, so do not expect a strip of pubs outside the away end.
