FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW EVERTON TO NEWCASTLE UNITED

The destination is St. James' Park in Newcastle upon Tyne. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters, stay in the upper city centre rather than chasing the absolute shortest stadium distance. Newgate Street, High Bridge, Fenkle Street and the Central Station side of the centre give the best balance: walk to the match, walk back after it, and still be where Newcastle's evening is happening. Sandman is the exception if being almost outside the turnstiles matters more than hotel quality or value.

Everton were 8th in the Premier League after 7 league games, with 10 points in the latest saved table. They started the campaign regarded as a side with survival to secure. It is an early marker, with much of the campaign still ahead. Everton have places to gain in the Premier League. The gaps around them matter more than turning one fixture into a verdict on the season.

Newcastle United were 11th in the Premier League after 7 league games, with 8 points in the latest saved table. Set that against the summer expectation: a mid-table side. Newcastle United have places to gain in the Premier League. The gaps around them matter more than turning one fixture into a verdict on the season.

Over their last five recorded league games, Everton have taken six points from a possible fifteen: one win, three draws and one defeat. Newcastle United come into the current picture with one win, one draw and three defeats across their last five league games, worth four points from a possible fifteen.

Build the day around supporting Everton from the away end, with time to meet up before the match rather than arriving at the turnstiles in a rush. Confirm the tickets and kick-off first, then compare the return journey with an overnight stay.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Maldron Hotel Newcastle

Newgate Street / Newcastle city centre

  • Short, simple walk to St James' Park without needing a taxi or Metro.
  • Central enough for Bigg Market, High Bridge, Grey Street, Chinatown and city-centre food.

WHY STAY HERE?

Maldron Hotel Newcastle

Newgate Street / Newcastle city centre

Our view

This is the pick when the trip is about more than simply sleeping beside the turnstiles. Maldron puts you on Newgate Street, close enough to walk to St James' Park in roughly 5–9 minutes depending on route and entrance, while High Bridge, the Bigg Market and Central Station remain close. Its current Booking.com score and recent Tripadvisor profile are stronger than Sandman's, making the modest extra walk a good trade for most supporters.

Why it suits this trip

  • Short, simple walk to St James' Park without needing a taxi or Metro.
  • Central enough for Bigg Market, High Bridge, Grey Street, Chinatown and city-centre food.
  • About a five-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station according to the hotel.
  • Current Booking.com coverage is verified and the review profile is strong.
  • Modern four-star positioning makes it a safer all-round recommendation for couples, friends or a one-night football break.

Getting to the ground

Published walking estimates vary from about 5 to 9 minutes depending on source, route and stadium entrance; 0.35 miles is a sensible planning figure.

Pubs and the evening

On the edge of Newcastle's core nightlife streets rather than isolated beside the stadium.

Arriving by train

Roughly a five-minute walk according to Maldron's location information; practical with an overnight bag.

The trade-offs

  • Saturday pricing is much higher than midweek in the sample.
  • Street-facing rooms can pick up city-centre/nightlife noise; a quieter-facing room is worth requesting if sleep-sensitive.
  • Recent review evidence includes an isolated but detailed cleanliness/maintenance complaint, so the excellent aggregate score should not be treated as flawless.

Research price context

Sampled at about £95–£160 midweek (average roughly £130), rising to about £180–£200 on Saturdays (average roughly £185).

Sandman Signature Newcastle Hotel

Sandman Signature Newcastle Hotel

Gallowgate / St James' Park

Sandman's case is very specific and very strong: it is effectively opposite St James' Park. The hotel's own current sports-stay page gives the distance as around 300 metres and less than two minutes on foot. That is excellent for a late finish, limited mobility or anyone who wants to be immersed in the stadium area.

  • The closest practical full-service hotel found to St James' Park.
  • No post-match transport planning: the room is effectively across Gallowgate from the stadium.
The match journey

Sandman's current sports-stay page states approximately 300 metres and less than a two-minute walk to St James' Park.

The trade-off

Current aggregate/recent review profile is materially less convincing than Maldron or Motel One.

WHY STAY HERE?

Sandman Signature Newcastle Hotel

Gallowgate / St James' Park

Our view

Sandman's case is very specific and very strong: it is effectively opposite St James' Park. The hotel's own current sports-stay page gives the distance as around 300 metres and less than two minutes on foot. That is excellent for a late finish, limited mobility or anyone who wants to be immersed in the stadium area. The compromise is a weaker current review profile than Maldron or Motel One, with recurring comments about noise, dated elements, maintenance and variable value.

Why it suits this trip

  • The closest practical full-service hotel found to St James' Park.
  • No post-match transport planning: the room is effectively across Gallowgate from the stadium.
  • Still within the wider city centre, so Chinatown, the Gate and central bars are walkable.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified.
  • Particularly useful for an evening kick-off, supporters carrying luggage or anyone prioritising the shortest possible return after the match.

Getting to the ground

Sandman's current sports-stay page states approximately 300 metres and less than a two-minute walk to St James' Park.

Pubs and the evening

Excellent for stadium-led drinking and still central, but High Bridge/Motel One is better placed for the main nightlife circuit.

Arriving by train

Roughly a 9–10 minute walk through the city centre; straightforward but not as station-focused as Maldron or Hotel Indigo.

The trade-offs

  • Current aggregate/recent review profile is materially less convincing than Maldron or Motel One.
  • Noise is unsurprising in this location and recurs in reviews.
  • Some reviews describe dated décor, maintenance issues or inconsistent room quality/value.
  • Being closest does not necessarily make it best value, especially on football weekends.

Research price context

Sampled at about £95–£165 midweek (average roughly £130), rising to about £145–£205 on Saturdays (average roughly £175).

Motel One Newcastle

Motel One Newcastle

High Bridge / Bigg Market / Grey Street

For supporters who want the match to roll straight into Newcastle's evening, this is the best-positioned primary choice. Motel One sits on High Bridge, the street NewcastleGateshead describes as connecting the Bigg Market to Grey Street. The stadium is still only around 900 metres/10 minutes away and Central Station about 400 metres away.

  • High Bridge location puts the hotel directly in the useful Bigg Market/Grey Street nightlife corridor.
  • Still an easy walk to St James' Park, so nightlife convenience does not require matchday transport.
The match journey

Motel One's location information puts St James' Park at roughly 900 metres; it remains a straightforward central walk.

The trade-off

Rooms are deliberately compact and the offer is simpler than a conventional four-star hotel.

Motel One Newcastle

High Bridge / Bigg Market / Grey Street

Our view

For supporters who want the match to roll straight into Newcastle's evening, this is the best-positioned primary choice. Motel One sits on High Bridge, the street NewcastleGateshead describes as connecting the Bigg Market to Grey Street. The stadium is still only around 900 metres/10 minutes away and Central Station about 400 metres away. Current review evidence is strong for cleanliness, style and location, with the predictable downside that some rooms hear external nightlife or early-morning bin activity.

Why it suits this trip

  • High Bridge location puts the hotel directly in the useful Bigg Market/Grey Street nightlife corridor.
  • Still an easy walk to St James' Park, so nightlife convenience does not require matchday transport.
  • Short walk from Newcastle Central Station.
  • Strong current Booking.com review volume and location score.
  • Usually the cheapest of the three primary choices on sampled midweek nights.

Getting to the ground

Motel One's location information puts St James' Park at roughly 900 metres; it remains a straightforward central walk.

Pubs and the evening

This is the strongest nightlife position of the three primary hotels: bars, pubs and restaurants are immediately around the hotel.

Arriving by train

About 400 metres according to Motel One's location information; roughly a six-minute walk in normal conditions.

The trade-offs

  • Rooms are deliberately compact and the offer is simpler than a conventional four-star hotel.
  • External nightlife, deliveries or bin/glass collection can disturb some rooms.
  • Breakfast is continental rather than a full cooked hotel breakfast.
  • Saturday pricing jumps sharply: the sampled weekend average was about 84% above the midweek average.

Research price context

Sampled at about £75–£100 midweek (average roughly £90), but about £150–£180 on Saturdays (average roughly £165). The Saturday premium is unusually large.

YOUR AWAY DAY · St. James' Park

The ground

Everton at Newcastle United

A steep, expanded old ground rather than a uniform modern bowl. The huge Milburn and Leazes tiers dominate two sides, while the lower East Stand and Gallowgate give the stadium a deliberately uneven profile. The surrounding city remains visible from upper levels, reinforcing the sense that the ground is part of Newcastle rather than a detached venue.

Recorded capacity
52,305

Views from the away section

The Level 7 away view is panoramic but extremely high and distant; it is genuinely polarising rather than simply 'good' or 'bad'.

The Level 7 away section gives a broad elevated panorama but is so high and distant that many visitors describe it as detached from the pitch; the climb itself is a defining part of the experience.

Why the ground matters

St James' Park is central to Newcastle United's identity because the club has stayed on essentially the same city-centre site since 1892 and football has been played there since 1880. The stadium's hilltop scale, asymmetrical form and immediate relationship with the city make it recognisable even before a visitor knows individual stands.

Gallowgate End

The city-facing home end, long associated with some of the most vocal support and now strongly linked to Wor Flags displays.

Milburn Stand

Named after Jackie Milburn; the present stand replaced the old West Stand in the late 1980s and was later expanded upward.

Leazes Stand / Level 7

Visiting supporters are currently housed high in Level 7 of the Leazes Stand. The elevation gives a broad view of both pitch and city but also creates physical distance from the action.

East Stand and Leazes Terrace

The comparatively low East Stand sits beside Grade I listed Leazes Terrace. In 2026 the club acquired a substantial majority of the terrace as part of long-term planning while committing to preserve its architectural significance.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · St. James' Park

Atmosphere & acoustics

Everton at Newcastle United

Large crowds and the enclosed lower bowl can make major fixtures very loud.

Blaydon Races

George Ridley's 1862 Tyneside song about travelling from Newcastle to the Blaydon horse races became a North East anthem and is still sung at Newcastle matches. Its force is that it names local places and speech rather than being a generic football song.

Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero

Mark Knopfler's instrumental has welcomed Newcastle onto the pitch since the early 1990s. The title, Knopfler's North East connection and its long repetition at St James' Park have turned it into an emotional cue for home matches.

Howay the Lads

Supporter interpretation

A compact piece of Geordie matchday language: 'howay' is an encouragement roughly equivalent to 'come on'. It appears in chants, banners and Wor Flags displays.

Wor Flags pre-match displays

Fan-funded flags, surfers, foils and tifos have become a regular pre-kick-off visual ritual since the group formed in the 2010s, especially after its 2021 return.

Number 9 mythology

The centre-forward shirt carries unusual symbolic weight because the club's remembered heroes include Gallacher, Milburn, Malcolm Macdonald, Les Ferdinand and Shearer. The idea matters even when the current holder is different.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · St. James' Park

Food & drink

Everton at Newcastle United

Newcastle is an unusually easy away day geographically, but not every city-centre door treats colours the same. Central Station is roughly 10–15 minutes from St James’ Park, and the Neville Street pubs opposite it are the sensible meeting point for rail arrivals. The Victoria Comet has the strongest recent away-following evidence, although football shirts can fall foul of its dress policy; Gunner Tavern and Newcastle Tap give useful alternatives.

Food and drink around the ground

There is no permanent designated away pub. Near the ground, Shearer’s is the clearest option because Newcastle United explicitly opens it to all supporters, while St James’ STACK is home-only on Newcastle matchdays. Food is much stronger than a standard football-ground run: Pink Lane Bakery works for early arrivals, Grainger Market and Dabbawal for city-centre food, and Chinatown sits on the walking route. City-centre hotels are the practical overnight choice.

Visiting supporters enter the Leazes Stand on Level 7, where catering is available after the climb.

Shearer's Bar

The clearest near-ground choice because Newcastle United explicitly says it is open to all supporters and the public. It serves food and shows live sport, but expect a heavy Newcastle presence and serious matchday crowds.

St. James' STACK

STACK is Newcastle's purpose-built stadium-side fanzone, with multiple bars, street-food traders, live entertainment and big screens. Its own current FAQ is unambiguous that away fans are not admitted on Newcastle home matchdays, so it should be treated as a home-supporter option rather than an away recommendation.

The Strawberry

Current football guides differ: Football Ground Guide says away fans are generally admitted if well behaved, while Tottenham's October 2025 guidance says supporters in away colours will be unable to enter most venues close to the ground. Use fixture-dependent access and check colours.

Grainger Market

Grainger Market is a strong food-first city-centre option rather than a football pub. Newcastle City Council says it houses more than 100 businesses, including street-food traders, coffee shops, cafes, bakers and other food stalls, making it useful for groups who want choice before heading towards the ground.

The market is open Monday to Saturday in the daytime and is closed on Sundays and bank holidays. No football-specific away-fan or colours policy was found, so those fields are deliberately left unknown rather than inferred.

St James' Park - Level 7 away concourse

The Level 7 concourse is the reliable fallback once visiting supporters are inside St James' Park. Recent visiting-club guidance confirms varied catering with hot and cold drinks, while Newcastle United confirms visiting supporters are housed on Level 7.

This is only available after stadium entry, so it is not a pre-match pub substitute in the city. Newcastle United says turnstiles normally open 90 minutes before kick-off. No claim is made here about specific brands, prices or stock because those details can change.

Pink Lane Bakery

Use Newcastle Central if you are arriving by mainline train. St. James’ Park is about a ten-minute walk away, so there is little reason to change onto the Metro for such a short journey. Allow a few extra minutes to reach the Leazes Stand away entrance and get up to Level 7. St James Metro station is immediately beside the ground, while Monument is about five minutes away and offers more connections across the network.

Shearer's Bar

The clearest near-ground choice because Newcastle United explicitly says it is open to all supporters and the public. It serves food and shows live sport, but expect a heavy Newcastle presence and serious matchday crowds.

The club does not explicitly guarantee away colours. Shearer's becomes extremely busy before kick-off, so it is not a quiet late-arrival option.

  • Newcastle home supporters wanting the main fanzone build-up Â

  • supporters without a match ticket who want a home-fan matchday atmosphere

General admission is normally walk-up, but STACK says ticketed entry can be introduced for operational reasons and matchday opening can vary. Newcastle shirts are specifically permitted; away supporters should not plan to use it on a home matchday.

The Victoria Comet

The strongest documented meeting point for train arrivals. It sits opposite Central Station and repeatedly attracts travelling support, making it the obvious first choice for groups who are happy to check the shirt policy.

The Strawberry

The Strawberry is one of the defining home-supporter pubs around St James' Park, directly beside the stadium and heavily associated with Newcastle matchdays. It serves food and is listed by CAMRA as family friendly, but away access should not be treated as guaranteed.

Current football guides differ: Football Ground Guide says away fans are generally admitted if well behaved, while Tottenham's October 2025 guidance says supporters in away colours will be unable to enter most venues close to the ground. Use fixture-dependent access and check colours.

St James' Park - Level 7 away concourse

The Level 7 concourse is the reliable fallback once visiting supporters are inside St James' Park. Recent visiting-club guidance confirms varied catering with hot and cold drinks, while Newcastle United confirms visiting supporters are housed on Level 7.

  • late arrivals who do not want to risk a pub admission policy Â

This is only available after stadium entry, so it is not a pre-match pub substitute in the city. Newcastle United says turnstiles normally open 90 minutes before kick-off. No claim is made here about specific brands, prices or stock because those details can change.

Planning your arrival

Away supporters should allow additional internal time for the Level 7 route.

Rail, Underground & tram

Haymarket is another useful city-centre Metro stop. Check your return train before travelling, particularly for evening kick-offs or cup ties that could run into extra time.

Mainline station
Newcastle Central (NCL), Neville Street; approximately 10 minutes on foot to the stadium, longer possible for the away turnstile and queues.
Nearest Metro
St James Metro station is directly beside the stadium.
Metro interchange
Monument Metro station is approximately five minutes on foot from St. James’ Park.
Further Metro option
Haymarket Metro and the adjoining bus station are within the city-centre walking catchment; exact away-end walking time not verified.
Rail step-free detail
National Rail rates Newcastle Central category B2: some step-free access to all platforms; the inter-platform footbridge is steep and lifts serve certain groups of platforms. Arrange assistance where needed.
Rail return warning
Train departures and Metro timetables need checking against fixture kick-off and any extra time; no single last service is asserted.

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the Leazes Stand on the northern side of St. James’ Park, rather than joining the queues at the Gallowgate End. From Newcastle Central, follow the pedestrian signs through the city centre towards the stadium, then continue around to the away entrance. Visiting supporters normally use Leazes Stand turnstiles 91–94, but follow the access number on your own ticket. Gates usually open 90 minutes before kick-off.

Once inside, the away seats are on Level 7, so allow time for the 140-step climb or ask a steward about lift access.

Buses & local travel

For most train arrivals, walk from Newcastle Central rather than paying for another journey. If you are coming from elsewhere in Tyne and Wear, the Metro serves St James, Monument and Haymarket, while buses reach the nearby Haymarket and Eldon Square interchanges. If you are driving in, the matchday X50 from the Metrocentre Coach Park is a better option than taking the car into the centre. The X40 also serves Newcastle Great Park.

Both provide free designated parking, with an adult return bus fare of £2, and run for the 2026/27 first-team home fixtures. Check the operator before setting out, especially for an evening match.

YOUR AWAY DAY · St. James' Park

Parking

Everton at Newcastle United

Official matchday park-and-ride lets you park free. Drive to the Metrocentre Coach Park and take the X50 to Barrack Road, close to St. James’ Park. Designated parking is free and the adult bus return costs £2. Newcastle Great Park offers the same arrangement on the X40. Neither guarantees a particular space. For a walk straight from your car, Claremont Road car park is the strongest council option.

Parking & park-and-ride

It opens 24 hours, costs £1.90 an hour Monday to Saturday and has a £3 Sunday charge. Walk via Leazes Park to the northern Leazes Stand entrance, allowing extra time to reach the away turnstiles. We cannot recommend a specific free residential street. Richardson Road and streets around Spital Tongues sit among permit-controlled areas, while city-centre pay bays can have maximum stays and charge on Sundays and bank holidays.

Evening-free bays do not help with daytime matches. Always read the restriction applying to the actual bay. If Claremont Road is full, use the 24-hour Leazes Park Road surface car park on Terrace Place, or the Garage at Helix if its 10pm closing time suits your fixture. The stadium car park is unavailable to general matchday drivers. Alternatively pre-book an authorised space, checking its access and reservation terms.

Aim to park at least 90 minutes before kick-off and allow four to five hours for the entire visit, including both walks and the return to your car. Trinity Square Tesco’s three-hour validated shopping offer is unsuitable: football-use permission is unconfirmed and the stay is too short. For evening or cup games, recheck car-park closing times and the last X50/X40 after the final whistle.

Parking verdict
Free parking is realistic via designated X50/X40 matchday park-and-ride, but no verified unrestricted street suitable for the whole matchday visit can be recommended.
Free option — Metrocentre Coach Park
Designated matchday park-and-ride bays are free. X50 runs to Barrack Road, returning from St James’ Boulevard at Citygate.
Free option — Great Park Park & Ride
Designated matchday parking is free on X40 service for 2026/27 Newcastle first-team home games; confirm access for late/weekend matches.
Legal restrictions — city centre
Pay-and-display parking charges within the charged Clean Air Zone street locations apply 8am–7pm daily including Sundays and bank holidays, except Christmas Day. Bay-specific signs, permits and maximum stays apply.
More practical details 18
Legal restrictions — Claremont Road / Spital Tongues
The 2026 order lists Claremont Road, Claremont Street and surrounding streets in zone WN1 for residential permit eligibility; this alone does not establish individual visitor bay permissions or times.
Legal restrictions — evening bays
Some signed pay bays are free after 6.30pm or 7pm only if no other restrictions then apply; check the sign for the particular space.
Matchday availability — residential streets
A September 2026 supporter report suggests some free parking in Elswick, but gives no legal street/bay verification. Do not rely on this as a published free parking recommendation.
Matchday availability — park-and-ride
Dedicated shuttle parking exists but a specific space is not guaranteed; recent supporter discussions also favour Metro / Metrocentre over central streets.
Walk — Claremont Road to away entrance
From Claremont Road, continue via Leazes Park towards Leazes Stand; an exact section-to-turnstile walking time was not verified.
Walk — Leazes Park Road to away entrance
Terrace Place (NE1 4LN), near the northern Leazes Stand side; exact turnstile-to-car-park minutes not verified.
Arrive by — preferred plan
Editorial planning allowance: reach your parking or shuttle boarding point at least 90 minutes before kick-off; X50/X40 first departures start around two hours before kick-off.
Paid fallback — Claremont Road
Claremont Road car park, NE2 4AN, 219 spaces; Monday–Saturday 8am–6pm £1.90/hour; Sunday £3 fixed charge; free 6pm–8am; open 24 hours.
Paid fallback — Leazes Park Road
Terrace Place NE1 4LN, 49 spaces; £2.10/hour daily 8am–7pm including bank holidays, free 7pm–8am; open 24 hours.
Paid fallback — The Garage at Helix
Corporation Street NE4 5TF, 517 spaces; £1.50/hour or £9 fixed charge daily 8am–10pm; open 6am–10pm; late finishes need caution.
Paid fallback — Grainger Town
Waterloo Street NE1 4DP, 401 spaces; £1.70/hour or £11 fixed charge 8am–7pm daily; opening hours 6am–midnight per car park page, overnight access on certain days described by council separately.
Booking recommendation
No general supporter stadium parking is bookable on matchdays. Park-and-ride does not need booking but does not promise a particular space; consider provider-authorised pre-booking for a guaranteed booking product and check its terms.
Supermarket permission/time limit — Trinity Square
Trinity Square Tesco Gateshead requires a £5 Tesco purchase and voucher validation for three hours free parking. Football parking permission is not confirmed. The site also lists separately charged short stays up to four hours and Horizon enforcement.
Supermarket permission/time limit — Barrack Road Tesco
The Barrack Road Tesco Express is close to the ground, but its store page does not establish dedicated or permitted full-match supporter parking; do not recommend it for football.
Total dwell time
Allow at least four to five hours overall for arrival, two walks, 90 minutes of play, half-time, stoppages, queues and departure; extra time or penalties may add longer.
After the match
X50 returns from Citygate on St James’ Boulevard, normally until 45 minutes after the final whistle; X40 from St Andrew’s Church, Newgate Street, normally until 40 minutes after. Barrack Road may be closed up to 45 minutes.
Day-specific differences
Claremont Road charges £3 Sunday and free after 6pm every day. Other car parks and street bays have different Sunday, bank-holiday, evening and closing-time arrangements.
Stadium car park restriction
NUFC Stadium council car park is open only on non-match/non-event days, despite published public tariffs; no general supporter stadium parking.

Driving & road restrictions

If you want to drive all the way in, choose a public car park rather than entering ‘St. James’ Park’ into the sat-nav and hoping to park there. Claremont Road, Leazes Park Road and the Garage at Helix are identifiable council options. The stadium car park itself is not open to general matchday parking. The ground sits by Gallowgate, St James’ Boulevard and Barrack Road. Expect congestion, with Barrack Road subject to a post-match closure lasting up to 45 minutes.

Use your chosen car park’s own postcode and follow temporary signs rather than attempting to reach the away entrance by car. Newcastle’s Clean Air Zone does not charge private cars or motorbikes. Drivers of older non-compliant vans, minibuses or coaches should check the vehicle rules before entering the centre.

Alternative car park — Helix
The Garage at Helix, Corporation Street NE4 5TF, open 6am to 10pm.
Post-match road restriction
Barrack Road may close for up to 45 minutes after full time; official diversion via Westgate Road, Brighton Grove and Stanhope Street.
Clean Air Zone
Private cars and motorbikes are not charged; non-compliant taxis, vans, buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles may be.

Worth knowing

Everton at Newcastle United

For an away supporter, the two identity details worth noticing are the ground's extraordinary relationship with the city and the unusual height of the away section. The experience should not be reduced to claims that the atmosphere is always brilliant: even Newcastle supporters debate inconsistency and have organised specifically to improve it.

Away coaches

If you are travelling on your club’s official supporters’ coach, use the drop-off and collection instructions issued by the coach organiser. Newcastle United asks private fan-coach operators to contact its safety and security office on 0191 201 8698 to arrange suitable drop-off points.

Do not assume your coach will collect you exactly where it dropped you. Barrack Road can be closed after the match, so leave enough time to reach the agreed collection point and follow any steward or police directions. Independent coach travellers arriving at Newcastle Coach Station can walk through the city centre to the ground.

Organisers should telephone Newcastle United safety and security on 0191 201 8698 for a suitable drop-off point.
Away coach collection
Fixture-specific: obtain the appointed collection location from coach organiser; no permanent point independently verified.
Road impact
A section of Barrack Road is closed after full time for up to 45 minutes or until crowds disperse.
National coach option
Newcastle Coach Station is on St James’ Boulevard; do not confuse long-distance services with official football coaches.
Buses

City-centre interchange
Haymarket and Eldon Square bus stations are within walking distance of the stadium.
Metro stations
St James immediately beside the ground; Monument around five minutes away on foot.
X50 route
Metrocentre Coach Park to Barrack Road before kick-off; return from St James’ Boulevard outside Citygate.
X40 route
Great Park Park & Ride to Barrack Road before kick-off; return from St Andrew’s Church, Newgate Street.
Shuttle adult fare
£1.50 single or £2.00 return as published for the 2026/27 home-match services.
Shuttle parking
Free parking in designated coach-park or Great Park bays; first-come availability, no specific bay guaranteed.
Shuttle eligibility
Home and away supporters can travel; no special ticket or advance reservation is required.
Metro accessibility
Nexus provides accessibility arrangements and assistance, but individual station lift operation needs live confirmation.
Accessibility

Accessible journeys

If you need level access, speak to Newcastle United and your own club before travelling. Visiting wheelchair spaces are available on Level 7 of the Leazes Stand, but are allocated through the away club. The normal stair route has 140 steps and 14 landings, with lifts available for supporters who cannot manage the climb.

Newcastle United allocates accessible parking through a Blue Badge ballot rather than offering walk-up spaces. Contact accessibility@nufc.co.uk about parking, assistance, alternative entrances or a suitable drop-off. Accessible drop-off can use the stadium car park, but post-match collection may have to wait until Barrack Road reopens. Check rail station assistance and Metro lift status independently.

Level 7 access
140 steps/14 landings for regular access; lifts available and stewards can direct supporters.
Away wheelchair tickets
Wheelchair viewing spaces on the Leazes Stand Level 7 are allocated through the visiting club ticketing process.
Accessible services
Accessible toilets, hearing loops, alternative entrances, sensory support and audio-descriptive commentary are offered.
Accessible parking ballot
Blue Badge holder stadium parking allocated via online ballot registration; supply Blue Badge copy, supporter number and vehicle registration to accessibility@nufc.co.uk.
Accessible drop-off
Access to stadium car park for drop-off is permitted with matchday direction; post-match pick-up awaits reopening of Barrack Road.
Stadium accessibility contact
accessibility@nufc.co.uk or 0191 201 8457 for further away supporter access advice.
Mainline station accessibility
Newcastle Central category B2 for step-free access and available lifts; assistance may be needed for certain movements.
Metro assistance
Nexus offers assistance on 0191 203 3666; request in advance and check individual lift/service conditions.
After the match

After the match

If you have driven, expect a slower exit from the immediate stadium area. Newcastle closes part of Barrack Road for up to 45 minutes after full-time, so a council car park farther from those streets can be easier to reach than a space beside the ground. Do not count on driving away as soon as the whistle goes.

For the X50 to the Metrocentre, walk to the Citygate building on St James’ Boulevard, not the pre-match Barrack Road drop-off. The X40 picks up by St Andrew’s Church on Newgate Street. Operator guidance currently allows return departures until 45 minutes and 40 minutes after full-time respectively; confirm any extra-time arrangement and allow for crowds. Check your actual rail departure rather than relying on the approximate walk to Central Station.

Barrack Road closure
Closed to vehicles after full-time for up to 45 minutes or until crowds disperse.
Road diversion
Westgate Road, Brighton Grove and Stanhope Street are the published diversion route during the Barrack Road closure.
X50 return collection
St James’ Boulevard, outside Citygate building, last scheduled departure 45 minutes after full-time.
X40 return collection
St Andrew’s Church on Newgate Street, last scheduled departure 40 minutes after full-time.
Extra time arrangements
Operator says extra-time or match-delay departure times will be pushed back accordingly, but check fixture service.
Rail return
Newcastle Central is around a ten-minute ground walk in normal conditions, but crowd movement and Level 7 exit add time.

Where to stay

Stay around Newcastle Central, Newgate Street or High Bridge if you are making a weekend of it. You can walk to St. James’ Park, return to your hotel after the match and still have the city-centre pubs and restaurants nearby. There is no need to stay out by a park-and-ride site simply because you are attending football.

The Central Station and Neville Street end is the most convenient choice for an early train. Newgate Street and the Bigg Market put you closer to the stadium and nightlife, while the Quayside offers another evening area with a longer, uphill walk back towards the ground. Compare rates for your actual fixture, especially on busy weekend dates.

Best overnight base
Newcastle city centre between Central Station, Newgate Street and High Bridge: practical for walking to the ground and evening hospitality.
Rail-oriented base
Newcastle Central/Neville Street area is convenient for arriving or leaving by national rail.
Nightlife and food area
Grey Street, High Bridge Street and Bigg Market offer a city-centre cluster of restaurants and pubs.

PUB / BAR

St James' Park - Level 7 away concourse

St. James' Park, Strawberry Place, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4ST
Usually away-friendlyFood available
BEST FORaway supporters who prefer to eat or drink after entering the stadium  · late arrivals who do not want to risk a pub admission policy  · supporters who want a ticketed fallback when city-centre venues are busy
MATCHDAY INTELThe Level 7 concourse is the reliable fallback once visiting supporters are inside St James' Park. Recent visiting-club guidance confirms varied catering with hot and cold drinks, while Newcastle United confirms visiting supporters are housed on Level 7.
WORTH KNOWINGThis is only available after stadium entry, so it is not a pre-match pub substitute in the city. Newcastle United says turnstiles normally open 90 minutes before kick-off. No claim is made here about specific brands, prices or stock because those details can change.
PUB / BAR

The Strawberry

7-8 Strawberry Place, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4SF
Away access: fixture dependentFamily friendlyFood availableColours: check
BEST FORNewcastle supporters wanting a traditional pre-match pub  · home or neutral visitors interested in the classic St James' Park pub atmosphere  · away supporters only where fixture-specific entry is confirmed
MATCHDAY INTELThe Strawberry is one of the defining home-supporter pubs around St James' Park, directly beside the stadium and heavily associated with Newcastle matchdays. It serves food and is listed by CAMRA as family friendly, but away access should not be treated as guaranteed.
WORTH KNOWINGCurrent football guides differ: Football Ground Guide says away fans are generally admitted if well behaved, while Tottenham's October 2025 guidance says supporters in away colours will be unable to enter most venues close to the ground. Use fixture-dependent access and check colours.
PUB / BAR

Shearer's Bar

St. James' Park, Strawberry Place, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4ST
Away access: checkFamily friendly
BEST FORnear-ground drinks · food by the stadium · supporters avoiding uncertain pub doors elsewhere
MATCHDAY INTELThe clearest near-ground choice because Newcastle United explicitly says it is open to all supporters and the public. It serves food and shows live sport, but expect a heavy Newcastle presence and serious matchday crowds.
WORTH KNOWINGThe club does not explicitly guarantee away colours. Shearer's becomes extremely busy before kick-off, so it is not a quiet late-arrival option.
PUB / BAR

The Victoria Comet

38 Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5DF
15 min walkAway access: checkFamily friendly
BEST FORtrain arrivals · larger away groups · pre-match drinks · pub food
MATCHDAY INTELThe strongest documented meeting point for train arrivals. It sits opposite Central Station and repeatedly attracts travelling support, making it the obvious first choice for groups who are happy to check the shirt policy.
WORTH KNOWINGCAMRA says football shirts appear to breach the dress code. Away access is well evidenced; entry in visible colours is not.
PUB / BAR

Gunner Tavern

Gunner House, Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5DF
Away access: check
BEST FORtrain arrivals · pre-match drinks · alternative to the busiest away pub
MATCHDAY INTELA useful overflow choice beside Central Station. Recent Forest guidance describes a more even home-and-away split than the Victoria Comet, and the current pub remains open daily with a serious beer range.
WORTH KNOWINGThe kitchen is currently closed for essential maintenance. No current official away-colours policy was found, so treat it as drinks-first and check.
PUB / BAR

The Head of Steam Newcastle

2 Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5EN
Away access: check
BEST FORtrain arrivals · craft beer · smaller away groups
MATCHDAY INTELA long-established station-side away option with strong beer credentials. Visiting-club guidance has specifically opened it to away fans, but recent supporter guidance warns that colours and children can affect admission.
WORTH KNOWINGStandard Sunday opening is 5pm, so it may be useless before a Sunday afternoon kick-off unless special matchday hours are announced.
PUB / BAR

Newcastle Tap

Baron House, 4 Neville Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5EN
Away access: check
BEST FORtrain arrivals · beer and food together · pizza · alternative station pub
MATCHDAY INTELThe best station-side option if you want food with the pint. Newcastle Tap combines a serious beer list with fresh beer-dough pizza and remains a regular visiting-supporter recommendation.
WORTH KNOWINGAway admission is well established in guides, but no permanent shirt policy is published. Cover colours or check before relying on entry.
PUB / BAR

St. James' STACK

Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4SG
Not for away fansFamily friendlyFood availableNo away colours
BEST FORNewcastle home supporters wanting the main fanzone build-up  · families wanting several food choices in one place  · supporters without a match ticket who want a home-fan matchday atmosphere
MATCHDAY INTELSTACK is Newcastle's purpose-built stadium-side fanzone, with multiple bars, street-food traders, live entertainment and big screens. Its own current FAQ is unambiguous that away fans are not admitted on Newcastle home matchdays, so it should be treated as a home-supporter option rather than an away recommendation.
WORTH KNOWINGGeneral admission is normally walk-up, but STACK says ticketed entry can be introduced for operational reasons and matchday opening can vary. Newcastle shirts are specifically permitted; away supporters should not plan to use it on a home matchday.

What to eatPancetta and rosemary sausage roll, steak and Newcastle Brown Ale pie, vegan curried chickpea and spinach pie, stotties, pastries and sandwiches.

The best quick-food answer for an early train: an independent bakery on Pink Lane with proper savouries rather than generic station food. The Newcastle Brown Ale pie or sausage roll are particularly useful walking lunches.

Away access: check
BEST FORearly train arrivals · quick takeaway · local savoury food · supporters skipping a pub meal
WORTH KNOWINGOpen Monday to Saturday 8am–4pm, but closed on Sundays. It is takeaway-focused, so do not plan it for a Sunday fixture.

BEST FORafter turnstiles · away supporters · late arrivals · avoiding pub admission uncertainty
WORTH KNOWINGThe away section is high: visiting guidance warns of 140 stairs and 14 landings, with lifts available via stewards for those who need them.
FOOD

Grainger Market

Where it isGrainger Street, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5QQView on map ↗

Grainger Market is a strong food-first city-centre option rather than a football pub. Newcastle City Council says it houses more than 100 businesses, including street-food traders, coffee shops, cafes, bakers and other food stalls, making it useful for groups who want choice before heading towards the ground.

Away access: fixture dependentFood availableColours: check
BEST FORsupporters who want food rather than a pub  · groups wanting several independent cuisines under one roof  · daytime Saturday fixtures where the market's opening hours fit
WORTH KNOWINGThe market is open Monday to Saturday in the daytime and is closed on Sundays and bank holidays. No football-specific away-fan or colours policy was found, so those fields are deliberately left unknown rather than inferred.
