FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW CRAWLEY TOWN TO ROTHERHAM UNITED

Crawley Town are 24th in League Two after 10 league games, with 5 points. Their league position and recent results are the clearest guide to the task here. This is where they stand after the opening stretch, rather than where they are certain to finish. Crawley Town are in the bottom two, six points behind the side immediately above the relegation places. A result here would help the effort to climb out; it would not settle the season on its own.

Crawley Town come into the current picture with one draw and four defeats across their last five league games, worth one points from a possible fifteen. Rotherham United's last five recorded league games brought two draws and three defeats: two points from a possible fifteen.

Rotherham United are 22nd in League Two after 12 league games, with 11 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition. Rotherham United are outside the bottom two, with one point between them and the highest-placed side in it. Putting more distance between themselves and trouble is the immediate task.

The destination is AESSEAL New York Stadium in Rotherham. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For the easiest match trip, base yourself at Forge Island / central Rotherham: the stadium, Rotherham Central station, town-centre pubs and the newer leisure cluster are all close together. Choose Sheffield city centre only when a much broader range of bars, restaurants and late-night venues justifies an extra train journey after the match.

An away day is a chance to follow Crawley Town somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Travelodge Rotherham Central

Travelodge Rotherham Central

Forge Island / Rotherham town centre

The best-balanced base for a Rotherham United overnight. It opened at Forge Island in 2024, so it avoids the dated feel that affects some older local stock, and it puts the station, town-centre food/drink and New York Stadium into one compact matchday footprint. Recent reviews repeatedly praise cleanliness, staff, beds and location.

  • Forge Island is within an easy walk of AESSEAL New York Stadium.
  • Rotherham Central station is immediately useful for arrivals and for a Sheffield evening.
The match journey

Approximate practical route. Forge Island car parking is listed at about 500m / 6 minutes from the stadium, and the Travelodge is within the Forge Island development. Allow roughly 6-10 minutes depending on exit, crossings and crowding.

The trade-off

No Booking.com listing surfaced in six representative baseline searches, so MatchdayHotels cannot currently route this choice through its principal hotel affiliate.

WHY STAY HERE?

Travelodge Rotherham Central

Forge Island / Rotherham town centre

Our view

The best-balanced base for a Rotherham United overnight. It opened at Forge Island in 2024, so it avoids the dated feel that affects some older local stock, and it puts the station, town-centre food/drink and New York Stadium into one compact matchday footprint. Recent reviews repeatedly praise cleanliness, staff, beds and location. Rooms are deliberately simple and can feel small, and parking is chargeable, but those are clearer trade-offs than the maintenance/reputation issues at some ultra-close independents.

Why it suits this trip

  • Forge Island is within an easy walk of AESSEAL New York Stadium.
  • Rotherham Central station is immediately useful for arrivals and for a Sheffield evening.
  • Forge Island now provides a cinema, bar/cafe and restaurant/leisure cluster rather than leaving supporters isolated by the ground.
  • Recent 2026 review evidence is notably strong for cleanliness, helpful staff, comfortable beds and central location.
  • Travelodge direct booking is verified even though Booking.com coverage was not found in the sampled searches.

Getting to the ground

Approximate practical route. Forge Island car parking is listed at about 500m / 6 minutes from the stadium, and the Travelodge is within the Forge Island development. Allow roughly 6-10 minutes depending on exit, crossings and crowding.

Pubs and the evening

Best for keeping the evening simple: bars/food in the Forge Island and town-centre area are walkable. It is not a Sheffield-scale nightlife district.

Arriving by train

Very close to Rotherham Central. The station itself is about a 7-minute walk from New York Stadium; direct services to Sheffield make a split football/nightlife trip possible.

The trade-offs

  • No Booking.com listing surfaced in six representative baseline searches, so MatchdayHotels cannot currently route this choice through its principal hotel affiliate.
  • Rooms are functional rather than characterful, and some reviewers describe them as small.
  • On-site/nearby parking is paid rather than automatically free for an overnight stay.
  • Rotherham's late-night choice is smaller than Sheffield's.

Research price context

Typically about £43–£61 midweek and £66–£82 on the sampled Saturdays; average roughly £52 midweek and £73 at weekends.

Leopold Hotel

Leopold Hotel

Leopold Square, Sheffield city centre

The nightlife-first choice rather than the easiest football choice. The hotel is on Leopold Square itself, so supporters finish the Rotherham-to-Sheffield transfer in one of Sheffield city centre's established bar and restaurant clusters. Booking.com currently scores it very well for location, cleanliness and staff.

  • Leopold Square puts bars and restaurants literally around the hotel.
  • The square is just off West Street in central Sheffield, with additional nightlife within walking distance.
The match journey

This is intentionally a rail/taxi nightlife base, not a walking hotel. Plan to return to Rotherham Central after the match and take a direct service to Sheffield, then walk into the city centre.

The trade-off

Not a stadium-area stay: it requires a post-match train or taxi from Rotherham to Sheffield.

WHY STAY HERE?

Leopold Hotel

Leopold Square, Sheffield city centre

Our view

The nightlife-first choice rather than the easiest football choice. The hotel is on Leopold Square itself, so supporters finish the Rotherham-to-Sheffield transfer in one of Sheffield city centre's established bar and restaurant clusters. Booking.com currently scores it very well for location, cleanliness and staff. Weekend noise from the surrounding bars is a real and repeatedly acknowledged trade-off, and some 2026 reviews flag dated maintenance or occasional bathroom/air-con issues.

Why it suits this trip

  • Leopold Square puts bars and restaurants literally around the hotel.
  • The square is just off West Street in central Sheffield, with additional nightlife within walking distance.
  • Direct Rotherham Central-Sheffield trains make the split-city plan practical for supporters who prioritise the evening.
  • Booking.com coverage is verified and the current location/cleanliness/staff sub-scores are strong.
  • The hotel has more character than a generic chain, in a converted historic building.

Getting to the ground

This is intentionally a rail/taxi nightlife base, not a walking hotel. Plan to return to Rotherham Central after the match and take a direct service to Sheffield, then walk into the city centre.

Pubs and the evening

Leopold Square is an established Sheffield city-centre leisure cluster with multiple bars and restaurants, and the hotel sits directly on it.

Arriving by train

Rotherham Central to Sheffield is direct, around 12 minutes fastest and roughly 16 minutes average in the current published journey data. Leopold Square is then a central-city walk; always check the late-evening timetable for the actual match date.

The trade-offs

  • Not a stadium-area stay: it requires a post-match train or taxi from Rotherham to Sheffield.
  • Friday/Saturday bar noise is a recurring review theme; quieter-room requests are sensible.
  • Some 2026 reviews mention dated decor or maintenance inconsistencies.
  • Sampled weekend prices are materially higher than central Rotherham.
  • For the 2026-10-10 Rotherham v Gillingham home-match date, the hotel did not surface in the sampled Booking.com availability results; book early and treat availability as date-sensitive.

Research price context

Typically around £105–£140 midweek and £134–£179 on sampled Saturdays; average roughly £125 midweek and £158 at weekends.

What to expect at Rotherham United

All the key information for Crawley Town supporters heading to AESSEAL New York Stadium — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

YOUR AWAY DAY · AESSEAL New York Stadium

The ground

Crawley Town at Rotherham United

A compact modern EFL ground built close to the town centre and close to the club's old home, with unusually strong industrial-history context for a 21st-century stadium.

Recorded capacity
12,021

Views from the away section

The Mears South Stand gives an excellent modern behind-goal view: sightlines are unobstructed, the rake is clean and there is enough height to follow play comfortably at the far end. The purpose-built bowl has none of the pillar compromises found at older grounds.

Why the ground matters

AESSEAL New York Stadium matters because it brought Rotherham United back to Rotherham after four seasons in Sheffield. Its significance is civic and emotional before it is architectural.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Crawley Town at Rotherham United

The compact 12,000-seat bowl keeps the crowd close enough together for noise to travel well, and a full South Stand gives the away following a concentrated presence behind the goal. Smaller allocations may be moved into a side section, which changes the feel.

Songs and matchday traditions

Miller Bear appearing around the stadium and family areas on matchdays.

Wembley trips have become a recurring reference point in modern club memory rather than a one-off pilgrimage.

Food & drink

Crawley Town at Rotherham United

Rotherham Central is the sensible meeting point for train arrivals, with New York Stadium around ten minutes away on foot and away supporters normally housed in the Mears South Stand. Don't wait for a drink at the station: the once-popular Bridge Inn is closed, despite still appearing in some away guides. Head instead towards Westgate, where the New York Tavern and Cutlers' Arms serve Chantry beers and have been recommended by visiting supporters.

Food and drink around the ground

The Bluecoat, further into town, suits groups wanting a cheap meal, although queues can build on busy matchdays. The Westgate pubs have mixed crowds, not guaranteed admission in away colours; follow any police or club advice for your fixture. For food, Forge Island near the station offers Vetro Lounge and Smoke & Pepper, while the newly opened Market Hall and Effingham Square give you bakeries, cafés and chippies if you have more time.

The South Stand has pies and hot snacks if you're running late. Staying around Forge Island or central Rotherham keeps the walk simple; Sheffield is an overnight option only if your return transport works.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

You can use Northern rail services where they suit your journey, but check your exact connections and the last train before committing to an evening match. The railway station is normally step-free, with lifts serving both platforms. Check National Rail's live accessibility notices before travelling, especially if you need a lift or booked assistance.

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the Mears South Stand, behind the goal, when you reach the stadium. The club's access map places visiting turnstiles 22–27 along that end, with access from the New York Way and Don Street side of the site. Check your match ticket for the exact block and gate before joining a queue. From Rotherham Central, follow town-centre pedestrian signs towards the stadium and approach the south end rather than circling all four stands.

If you need to collect an away ticket, the South Stand ticket office has been used for visiting collections, although opening arrangements depend on the fixture. For a step-free entrance, ask a steward for the designated accessible route. The club provides a ramp from the South Stand car park.

Buses & local travel

Walk from Rotherham Central or Rotherham Interchange if you can. Both are within roughly ten to fifteen minutes of the stadium, and taking another local bus rarely saves enough time to be worthwhile. The interchange on Frederick Street is the useful arrival point for services from Sheffield and surrounding towns. If you are coming from Sheffield without using rail, First Bus runs the X1, X2 and X3 corridors through Rotherham.

The X3 has a Corporation Street diversion while roadworks continue, so check your boarding stop and return before leaving. For drivers using Parkgate Park & Ride, take the Tram Train to Rotherham Central and walk the final section. The parking is free, but the tram journey needs a valid ticket.

Parking

Crawley Town at Rotherham United

You normally do not need to book parking for a Saturday match at Rotherham. Westgate council car park, S60 1BJ, is free all day on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with 200 spaces. It is a better starting point than searching unfamiliar residential roads around New York Way. From Westgate, allow roughly ten to fifteen minutes to walk towards the Mears South Stand via the town-centre and Main Street approaches.

The Statutes car park, S60 1YW, is another free all-day weekend option close to the stadium, but has only 40 spaces. Supporters report that its exit can be slow after full-time. If you would rather park farther from the matchday traffic, use Drummond Street, S65 1EZ. Its 240 council spaces are also free all day at weekends; a recent visiting supporter reported a walk of around twenty minutes.

None of these car parks guarantees availability, so get there well before kick-off. For on-street parking, the council identifies marked all-day bays on Masbrough Street and Chapel Walk. They are charged on Saturdays but normally free on Sundays and bank holidays, subject to displayed restrictions. We could not verify any particular residential street as unrestricted for the whole match.

For a weekday game, Westgate costs £1.50 for up to four hours or £3.10 for longer. Forge Island is a 24-hour paid fallback at £5 for four hours or £8 for up to 24 hours. Its four-hour free concession is only for registered customers of Forge Island businesses. Allow at least four hours for a straightforward visit, and closer to five with a longer walk or pre-match stop. Do not use Tesco customer parking without permission.

If you want to reserve parking, Tesco Rotherham has a separate authorised YourParkingSpace listing whose booking exempts shoppers' usual stay limits.

Driving & road restrictions

Set your sat-nav for your chosen car park, not the stadium entrance. AESSEAL New York Stadium is on New York Way, S60 1AH, but ordinary visiting supporters cannot rely on parking inside the ground. From the M1, the club gives Junction 33 and the A630 for southern approaches, or Junction 35 and the A629 from the north. For central parking, use the town-centre direction signs and follow the approach to your selected council site.

The stadium approach uses Main Street and Don Street, where matchday pedestrians may have priority and vehicle movements can be held. Rotherham United has previously closed Main Street on ordinary home matchdays but kept it open for lower-attendance cup fixtures. Check the specific fixture and any current roadworks rather than treating one closure timetable as permanent.

Comfort & weather

Crawley Town at Rotherham United

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

This is one of the more straightforward modern away ends: plenty of legroom, easy access from the concourse and unobstructed rows. Food, drink and toilets are reached directly from the concourse beneath the stand, so there is little of the cramped circulation associated with older grounds.

Shelter and exposure

The New York Stadium offers a clean modern away setup with good behind-goal sightlines; visiting reviews also describe the concourse as reasonably spacious for a typical away following rather than cramped.

Parking & park-and-ride

You normally do not need to book parking for a Saturday match at Rotherham. Westgate council car park, S60 1BJ, is free all day on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with 200 spaces. It is a better starting point than searching unfamiliar residential roads around New York Way.

From Westgate, allow roughly ten to fifteen minutes to walk towards the Mears South Stand via the town-centre and Main Street approaches. Parking

Where to leave the car for Rotherham United.

Matchday advice: You normally do not need to book parking for a Saturday match at Rotherham. Westgate council car park, S60 1BJ, is free all day on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with 200 spaces.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Rotherham Central for AESSEAL New York Stadium. It is about ten minutes on foot from the stadium, so you will normally find walking easier than waiting for another bus. Follow the pedestrian signs towards the town centre and New York Way, then allow a little extra time to reach the South Stand away turnstiles.

If you are travelling from Sheffield, the Tram Train also calls at Rotherham Central.

Coaches

Away coaches

Travel on your visiting club's official coach when you want the simplest arrival. Rotherham United's access statement directs away coaches to drop passengers at the South Stand car park, immediately behind the visiting section. There is a gentle uphill section followed by a short tarmac approach to the away entrance.

After dropping off, coaches are lined up along New York Way in their order of arrival. The walk back to your vehicle can therefore be longer than the walk from the drop-off point, so note its location and confirm the meeting point with your organiser before leaving.

If someone in your group needs a shorter or step-free transfer, ask the coach organiser to contact the club's supporter services team in advance. The club can discuss a designated accessible drop-off and collection arrangement with its safety team.

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible tickets and parking with Rotherham United before travelling. The club's access statement lists six spaces in the South Stand car park for visiting disabled supporters, at £7 and subject to availability. Booking through the ticket office gives you a ramped, step-free approach to the away end.

The stadium has designated wheelchair entrances, raised viewing areas reached by lift and accessible toilets. Contact the disability liaison team about your exact seating, entrance, personal assistant requirements or assistance-dog arrangements rather than relying on the normal South Stand turnstiles.

Rotherham Central is normally step-free, but lift works can affect particular travel dates. Request rail assistance and check live station notices if you cannot manage stairs; organisers of accessible coaches should also contact the club ahead of the game.

After the match

After the match

If you have parked at Westgate or Drummond Street, walk clear of the stadium crowds before returning to your vehicle. Both provide alternatives to the closest stadium-side parking, while The Statutes can involve a slower departure when traffic is held for pedestrians.

Visiting fans have been directed out by New York Way at some fixtures, with home supporters using Don Street. Stewards and police may change the arrangement, so follow the signs and avoid assuming that a road left open before kick-off will be open immediately after full-time.

Rail and Tram Train users should make for Rotherham Central with time to spare. For a late game or cup tie that could run to extra time, check your final connection before kick-off and consider a town-centre stay if you cannot get home that night.

Where to stay

Stay around Rotherham town centre or Forge Island if you want to walk to the match and avoid arranging a car. Rotherham Central, the bus interchange, pubs and the stadium are close together, so a central base keeps the whole away day straightforward.

Forge Island has a Travelodge close to the station and stadium. Hotel guests have a separate overnight parking concession at the Forge Island car park, but you must register your vehicle with reception and follow the published arrival and departure times.

Sheffield is an alternative if you want more restaurants and nightlife or are travelling onward by rail. It adds a train or Tram Train journey before and after the football, which matters for evening kick-offs and any match with extra time.
