FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW COVENTRY CITY TO ASTON VILLA

This fixture is still months away, on 24 April. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Coventry City are involved in a fight to stay up by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Coventry City were 18th in the Premier League after 5 league games, with 3 points in the latest saved table. Set that against the summer expectation: a side likely to face a difficult survival fight.

Coventry City come into the current picture with one win and four defeats across their last five league games, worth three points from a possible fifteen. Aston Villa's last five recorded league games brought two wins, two draws and one defeat: eight points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Aston Villa are 12th in the Premier League after 7 league games, with 8 points. Before the season, they were seen as European contenders.

The destination is Villa Park in Birmingham. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters, Birmingham city centre is the better overnight base because New Street connects quickly with Witton/Aston and the AV82 matchday shuttle adds another direct option. Choose Aston only when walking to Villa Park is more important than restaurants, nightlife and a wider hotel market. There is an established rivalry here, which gives the away end an extra reason to turn out. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

An away day is a chance to follow Coventry City somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 21 October.

Birmingham city centre / Holliday Street

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice for most supporters: central enough for food and drinks, about a 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street, easy to pair with the Witton/Aston rail routes or the matchday city-centre shuttle, and backed by unusually strong cleanliness, comfort and value scores for a large city-centre hotel.

  • Good balance between matchday transport, city-centre evening options and price.
  • Around a 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street/Grand Central, keeping the Villa Park rail leg simple.
The match journey

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Do not plan to walk as the default matchday route. The practical route is via Birmingham New Street to Witton/Aston, or the AV82 matchday shuttle.

Birmingham city centre / Holliday Street

Our view

The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice for most supporters: central enough for food and drinks, about a 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street, easy to pair with the Witton/Aston rail routes or the matchday city-centre shuttle, and backed by unusually strong cleanliness, comfort and value scores for a large city-centre hotel.

Why it suits this trip

  • Good balance between matchday transport, city-centre evening options and price.
  • Around a 10-minute walk from Birmingham New Street/Grand Central, keeping the Villa Park rail leg simple.
  • Booking.com evidence is strong for cleanliness, comfort, location and value.
  • Breakfast is included by the hotel, useful after a late match or before travelling home.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Do not plan to walk as the default matchday route. The practical route is via Birmingham New Street to Witton/Aston, or the AV82 matchday shuttle.

Pubs and the evening

Good access to central Birmingham without paying the full Broad Street premium. Broad Street and Brindleyplace are reachable on foot.

Arriving by train

Official hotel information says roughly a 10-minute walk. From New Street, Witton is the closest rail stop to Villa Park and Aston gives more frequent city-bound trains after matches.

The trade-offs

  • It is not a walk-to-the-ground hotel; supporters should use rail, shuttle, bus or taxi.
  • Weekend pricing in the sample is materially higher than representative midweek pricing.
  • Holliday Street is central but not itself Birmingham's liveliest nightlife strip.

Research price context

Representative sampled rates were about £60-£110 midweek and roughly £125-£165 on ordinary away-weekend dates. Treat these as snapshots rather than guaranteed live rates.

The Aston Tavern

The Aston Tavern

Aston / Aston Hall Road

The closest practical hotel choice for Villa Park: a small Victorian hotel/pub around five to six minutes on foot from the ground. It is much more football-convenient than a city-centre stay, but the trade-off is a much thinner surrounding evening scene and, in the sampled dates, a surprisingly high room rate.

  • Genuinely walkable to Villa Park, with no need to join the post-match train queues.
  • Aston Station is also nearby for the city centre.
The match journey

Booking.com places the hotel about 500 metres from Villa Park; Hotels.com lists roughly a five-minute walk. This is the clearest genuinely walkable hotel option identified.

The trade-off

Sampled non-match rates were around £195, far above the nearby Aston Inn and often above good city-centre hotels.

It is much more football-convenient than a city-centre stay, but the trade-off is a much thinner surrounding evening scene and, in the sampled dates, a surprisingly high room rate.

Why it suits this trip

  • Genuinely walkable to Villa Park, with no need to join the post-match train queues.
  • Aston Station is also nearby for the city centre.
  • Recent verified reviews are positive on cleanliness, comfort and staff.
  • On-site bar gives supporters somewhere to have a drink without travelling back into the centre.

Getting to the ground

Booking.com places the hotel about 500 metres from Villa Park; Hotels.com lists roughly a five-minute walk. This is the clearest genuinely walkable hotel option identified.

Pubs and the evening

Useful on-site bar, but this is not Birmingham's main restaurant/nightlife district. For a full evening out, city-centre accommodation is stronger.

Arriving by train

Hotels.com lists Aston Station at roughly a seven-minute walk. This provides a practical route to Birmingham New Street.

The trade-offs

  • Sampled non-match rates were around £195, far above the nearby Aston Inn and often above good city-centre hotels.
  • The wider Aston Hall Road area has far less evening choice than central Birmingham.
  • Booking.com currently shows weak Wi-Fi scoring.
  • Recent reviews include some traffic noise, room-layout quirks and one poor football-evening dinner report.

Research price context

The six sampled non-home-match dates all returned about £195 for 1 room / 2 adults. That makes it expensive for Aston, despite the exceptional stadium convenience.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly in Birmingham's main Broad Street/Brindleyplace evening district.
  • Large, modern hotel with strong comfort and cleanliness evidence.
  • Booking.com location score is very strong.
  • Brindley Place tram access makes the New Street connection easy.

Getting to the ground

Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Use tram/walk to the New Street area, then rail or the matchday shuttle/bus network to Villa Park.

Pubs and the evening

This is the key reason to choose the hotel: Broad Street and Brindleyplace provide the densest immediate choice of bars, restaurants and late-night venues among the primary recommendations.

Arriving by train

The hotel's official page says Brindley Place Metro is adjacent and New Street is roughly a five-minute tram ride away.

The trade-offs

  • More expensive than the all-round recommended option in the representative sample.
  • Not walkable to Villa Park as the normal matchday plan.
  • A nightlife location brings a noise risk; recent-review summaries mention noise on some lower floors.
  • Hotel bar pricing is reported as high by some recent reviewers.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Villa Park

The ground

Coventry City at Aston Villa

A traditional four-sided English ground rather than a single modern bowl, with a huge home end, a grand main-stand side and an immediate relationship with Aston's streets and Aston Hall. In 2026/27 that familiar shape is in transition because the North Stand is closed during redevelopment.

Recorded capacity
42,640

Views from the away section

Visiting sightlines are generally rated very good; occasional edge/corner obstruction can be seat-dependent.

Why the ground matters

Villa Park is not merely where Aston Villa happen to play. The club has been on the Aston Lower Grounds site since 1897, beside Aston Hall, and generations have attached different meanings to the Holte End, Trinity Road and Witton Lane/Doug Ellis sides. Its architectural losses and rebuilds are part of supporter memory in their own right.

Holte End

Villa Park's principal home end. The great old terrace was removed after the Taylor Report and replaced by the current two-tier stand in 1994.

Trinity Road Stand

The current stand replaced one of British football architecture's celebrated losses: Archibald Leitch's ornate 1920s Trinity, with stained glass and mosaics.

North Stand

Closed for the 2026/27 season as redevelopment proceeds. This makes current capacity and supporter locations unusually changeable.

William McGregor statue

Placed outside the Trinity Road side and funded through a club-and-supporter effort; it is one of the clearest physical reminders that Villa's history includes creating league football.

150th-anniversary lion statue

Unveiled in 2025 behind the North Stand area, turning the badge's rampant lion into a permanent piece of stadium sculpture.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Coventry City at Aston Villa

The Holte End is the main home atmosphere driver and can make bigger fixtures notably loud.

Big Holte End displays and tifos

The 1897 Group's recent work has made organised flags and tifos a more visible part of selected major Villa Park occasions.

European memory as matchday reference

Supporter interpretation

Bayern, Rotterdam and 1982 are repeatedly invoked on European nights; the 2024 Bayern win and 2026 Europa League title have refreshed rather than replaced that memory.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Villa Park

Food & drink

Coventry City at Aston Villa

Villa Park is a strong home-supporter area rather than an easy away-pub crawl. Current visiting-club guidance and August/September 2026 supporter reports repeatedly steer away fans towards Birmingham city centre, especially around New Street, before heading to the ground. The Witton Arms is now clearly home-only on matchdays; the Yew Tree remains inconsistent and can charge admission.

Food and drink around the ground

The Tennis Court in Perry Barr is the clearest current away-oriented option, but its designation should still be treated as fixture-dependent rather than a universal rule. For food, the immediate area is better than the pub picture suggests: Pizza Shack and Fay's Jamaican are current local takeaway options, while Villa's own matchday operation includes the Sports Illustrated Warehouse and stadium food/bar areas.

City-centre pubs give broader pre-match choice and are generally the safer default for visiting supporters before onward travel. Away supporters should still check their club, the venue and matchday police/SLO guidance because pub admission, entry charges and colours policies can change by fixture.

The Tennis Court

This is the strongest current candidate for a dedicated away pub. Chelsea's live Villa Park guide names The Tennis Court as the designated away pub, and a September 2026 Nottingham Forest away guide also expects visiting fans to be welcome. Ipswich supporters were discussing it as the official away pub in February 2026.

It is not a simple replacement for the old Witton Arms because it is away from the immediate stadium pub cluster, so supporters should confirm the arrangement for their fixture.

  • away supporters who want a pub identified by visiting-club guidance Â
  • groups prepared to use Perry Barr rather than rely on pubs beside Villa Park

Treat the away designation as fixture-dependent. The current Craft Union page confirms the pub is open and children are welcome, but it does not advertise a food menu; older listings that say food is served conflict with more recent venue information.

Gosta Green

Gosta Green is one of the more useful larger-group options away from the immediate Villa Park pub restrictions. Current away-day guides actively market it to visiting supporters, while CAMRA confirms that it reopened and is trading, with food service, sports TV and a garden. It suits supporters who prefer a sizeable pre-match base rather than gambling on a stadium-side door policy.

The pub reopened in 2026 after a closure, so it is worth retaining a current-status check in the review workflow.

The Square Peg

The Square Peg is a practical city-centre fallback with unusually strong current visiting-club evidence. Brentford's February 2026 Villa Park guide says city-centre pubs welcome away fans and specifically points supporters to The Square Peg. The current Wetherspoon page confirms it is open, serves food and permits under-18s during stated daytime/evening hours.

The venue's normal under-18 policy is published, but football-specific door or colours restrictions can still change on the day.

The Witton Arms

The Witton Arms is still one of the key pubs in the Villa Park matchday scene, but current evidence says it should now be treated as a home-supporter venue rather than an away pub. The pub's own website explicitly says it welcomes home fans, CAMRA describes it as home-fans-only on matchdays, Brentford's February 2026 guide says it no longer accepts away fans, and Arsenal supporters reported the same change in August 2026.

Older away guides that still describe the Witton Arms as an away pub are out of date.

The Aston Tavern

The Aston Tavern is a polished matchday option with a very explicit 2026/27 membership model rather than a casual away-pub proposition. Its current membership page advertises free entry to all matchday events for members, priority/guaranteed entry, free entry for children and matchday meal benefits. The venue also operates a restaurant and bar. There is not strong enough current evidence to label it away-friendly.

The 2026/27 annual membership is £85; non-member matchday entry rules and away-fan admission should be checked directly.

The Yew Tree

The Yew Tree remains a genuine but uncertain away-day lead. CAMRA confirms it is open and describes it as a sports pub handy for Aston Villa. A very recent Nottingham Forest guide calls it an unofficial away option but warns of a substantial matchday entry charge, while other current supporter material says access has become tighter. That makes it useful to retain for manual review, not to publish as a guaranteed away pub.

Entry charges and away admission are volatile; do not publish a fixed charge or colours policy without fixture-day confirmation.

Sports Illustrated Warehouse

The Sports Illustrated Warehouse is now part of Villa Park's official fan-experience estate. Aston Villa announced the long-term partnership in May 2026 and the club's current site still gives the Warehouse a primary navigation link. Official 2026 matchday material describes a bar, food, live entertainment and large fan events. What is not currently clear enough is whether men's away supporters are routinely admitted on Premier League matchdays.

The Wellington

The Wellington is a credible city-centre supporter lead rather than a designated away pub. Ipswich supporters recommended it for ale before Villa in 2026, and the current venue site confirms it is open daily. It does not run a normal kitchen, though current listings say bar snacks are available and outside takeaway food can be brought in. Family policy is inconsistent between first-party/owner listings, so it should be checked.

Pizza Shack

Pizza Shack is one of the stronger near-ground food leads because it is both current and independently verifiable. Fay's Jamaican

Fay's Jamaican is a useful food-first option on Witton Road. It appears to be trading in 2026 through current delivery/listing evidence, and the Food Standards Agency still records the business at this address. Football Ground Guide specifically highlighted it in a 2026 Villa Park food feature, which makes it more relevant than a generic nearby restaurant.

Accessibility

Coventry City at Aston Villa

Arrange accessible parking through your visiting club before matchday. Villa Park’s away allocation includes parking in the coach-park area opposite Witton Lane, but passes are limited and cannot normally be bought on arrival. Ask your club to confirm the route through any road closures. Wheelchair users usually enter at Gate 28 beside the visiting ticket office and Doug Ellis Block Q. The pitchside positions have little rain cover.

Accessible journeys

Upper Block P has 64 steps; some ambulant seats in Block Q have eight steps, with lift access available through the accessible entrance when arranged. Witton is listed as step-free to both platforms using potentially long or steep ramps, not level boarding. National Rail also currently flags a lift fault at Aston, so check live station access and book passenger assistance if necessary.

Before the match

Coventry City at Aston Villa

Use Witton for the away end. Trains from Birmingham New Street take about ten minutes, and you then have roughly five minutes on foot to the Doug Ellis Stand. Check your train before setting off; the October 2026 visiting-club guide describes a roughly half-hourly local service, not a guaranteed matchday frequency. Aston is a useful alternative when its trains or return connections suit you better.

Pre-match choices

Witton is the most convenient rail-side pre-match area; the Witton Arms is a commonly cited away option but admission rules are fixture-dynamic.

The pre-match experience

Supporter observation

Recent visiting-supporter threads warn that some pubs close to Villa Park do not consistently admit away fans; central Birmingham is a common safer default for the pre-match drink.

This is supporter-reported matchday information. Pub admission and matchday policy can vary by fixture, so check current details before travelling.

The venue website says over-18s only, while Black Country Ales lists children allowed until 7pm; treat family suitability as check-before-going.

Pizza Shack

Pizza Shack is one of the stronger near-ground food leads because it is both current and independently verifiable. The Halal Monitoring Committee shows active 2026 certification checks at the Witton Road address, while a 2026 Football Ground Guide article identifies it as a regular matchday food option near Villa Park.

  • supporters wanting takeaway rather than a pub meal

No current evidence has been found for football-specific admission or colours restrictions; it is treated simply as a food stop.

Opening hours vary between current listings, so editors should avoid publishing a fixed matchday opening time without a direct venue check.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Allow around 15 minutes to walk from there, rather than counting on Witton for the last train. Birmingham Moor Street arrivals can walk across to New Street for the local service. Driving part-way? Tame Bridge Parkway offers a legitimate free station car park when you use the train. Spaces are first come, first served; check that your train serves Witton and that a suitable return runs after full-time.

Recommended station
Witton (West Midlands): closest to away turnstiles; approximately five minutes on foot.

Alternative station

Park-and-ride station
Tame Bridge Parkway, WS10 0LD; free rail-user parking, first come first served.
Tram access
West Midlands Metro does not stop at Villa Park; change to rail or bus for the ground.

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the Doug Ellis Stand on Witton Lane, not the Holte End. From Witton station, turn left towards the roundabout, turn left into Witton Lane and continue to the visiting-supporter turnstiles on your right. Follow stewards if a barrier or queue changes your approach. Lower-tier Block Q normally uses turnstiles Q91–Q96B; upper-tier Block P uses P87–P89, including P88A. There are 64 steps to the upper concourse.

Cup allocations may use part of the North Stand instead, so follow the block and entrance on your ticket. The away ticket office is on Witton Lane opposite the coach park. Construction reported around the North Stand in October 2026 can change the final approach, so allow time for screening and steward directions.

Buses & local travel

From New Street, the AV82 matchday shuttle is a straightforward alternative to the train. Board on Dudley Street and travel directly towards Villa Park; the October 2026 away-club guide quoted £5 return, paid to the driver by cash or card. The club has previously advertised services starting three hours before kick-off. For an ordinary bus, route 7 serves Witton Square near the ground and starts from the Snow Hill/Great Western Arcade area.

The 11A/11C and services 65/67 reach the wider neighbourhood, but not all stop beside the away entrance. For the journey back, the AV82 leaves from Grosvenor Road towards Aston station. Check the latest service notice before travelling: published post-match operating windows do not fully agree, especially important for evening games.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Villa Park

Parking

Coventry City at Aston Villa

Book matchday parking if you want to drive close to Villa Park. Residents’ permit bays are enforced on matchdays, while Witton Lane and parts of Trinity Road close to general traffic. We could not verify any named stretch of public road where free parking is both permitted and dependable for a visiting supporter. For a booked space, look at the club’s travel site or Countrywide’s school car parks.

Parking & park-and-ride

Birchfield Primary School on Trinity Road, Prince Albert Junior School on Albert Road and Aston Tower School on Upper Sutton Street were advertised at £10 per car for the upcoming Fenerbahce match. Allow extra walking time around the away-end cordon, even at the nearer sites. Free parking is a better proposition if you use Tame Bridge Parkway and catch the train to Witton.

StarCity on Watson Road advertises 2,400 free spaces and fans report a walk of around 30 minutes, but we could not confirm the centre permits parking solely to attend football. Ask the operator before treating it as an option. Tesco on Aston Lane is not a free matchday car park. You can book a separate paid space through YourParkingSpace, subject to its available hours; ordinary shopper parking has limits displayed on site.

Budget four to five hours for a normal visit, longer for a cup tie, rather than relying on a three-hour allowance. Aim to have your car parked about 90 minutes before kick-off, earlier for a big fixture. If your chosen site is full, use a confirmed pre-booked alternative or park-and-ride. Do not spend the final half-hour circling residential streets; the time lost and risk of a fine outweigh the saving.

Parking verdict
Booking advisable close to ground; no unrestricted public on-street section legally verified for a matchday recommendation.
Free option — area
Tame Bridge Parkway, WS10 0LD: free rail-user park-and-ride (not free street parking). StarCity B7 5SA advertises free general parking, but football-only permission is unconfirmed.
Legal restrictions — Aston matchday zone

Legal restrictions — stadium closure roads

Driving & road restrictions

Use the postcode of your booked car park for sat-nav, rather than trying to drive to Villa Park itself. If approaching from the M6, Aston Villa’s visiting guide recommends junction 6, then follow the approach supplied by your operator. Check the latest motorway works before you leave. A traffic exclusion zone restricts Witton Lane between Aston Hall Road and Witton Road, plus Trinity Road between Nelson Road and Witton Lane.

Aston Villa’s published guidance allows for closures from as early as two hours before kick-off, with reopening roughly 30–60 minutes after full-time depending on crowd movement. If you drive via central Birmingham, check your vehicle against the Clean Air Zone before choosing the route. The charging area sits inside the A4540 Middleway; the stadium itself is outside it.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Villa Park

Worth knowing

Coventry City at Aston Villa

For an interested away supporter, the useful way to read Villa Park is as a ground in transition with a very old memory. The Holte End is the home-support reference point, Aston Hall explains the setting, and the statues make Villa's preferred historical story unusually visible before kick-off.

Matchday features

Holte End atmosphere. Traditional enclosed ground. Halal catering signal

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

The Holte End dominates the home identity

Supporter interpretation

It is the stand most closely tied to Villa's songs, big displays and the idea of the 'Holte Ender'.

Villa Park does not feel detached from its district

Aston Hall, the old Lower Grounds site and the surrounding Aston streets make the club-place link obvious if you know what you are looking at.

European history is worn openly

Supporter interpretation

McGregor, the lion, Rotterdam and recent European success are recurring visual and verbal reference points rather than hidden museum facts.

Aston Hall beside the stadium

It explains why the ground has a setting unlike most major English stadiums and anchors 'Holte' in a much older Aston landscape.

Holte End façade and scale

Even seated, the home end is the architectural and cultural focal point of Villa Park.

McGregor and lion statues

One represents the club's contribution to organised football; the other the badge symbol that Villa chose to make permanent for its 150th year.

The absence of the old Trinity

Historic England images and Simon Inglis's writing show how much ornate football architecture disappeared when the 1920s stand was demolished in 2000.

Aston Lower Grounds

The football ground grew from a Victorian leisure site rather than a blank plot.

Aston Hall estate

The stadium landscape is physically connected to Aston Hall's former grounds; archaeology even links the site to the Hall's old ice supply.

Fred Rinder's unrealised scale

Early twentieth-century plans envisaged a ground of roughly 104,000 capacity, a reminder of how ambitious Villa's directors already were before the First World War.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Witton for the away end. Trains from Birmingham New Street take about ten minutes, and you then have roughly five minutes on foot to the Doug Ellis Stand. Check your train before setting off; the October 2026 visiting-club guide describes a roughly half-hourly local service, not a guaranteed matchday frequency.

Aston is a useful alternative when its trains or return connections suit you better.

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible parking through your visiting club before matchday. Villa Park’s away allocation includes parking in the coach-park area opposite Witton Lane, but passes are limited and cannot normally be bought on arrival. Ask your club to confirm the route through any road closures.

Wheelchair users usually enter at Gate 28 beside the visiting ticket office and Doug Ellis Block Q. The pitchside positions have little rain cover.

After the match

After the match

If you need Birmingham New Street, decide your return before kick-off. Witton is the shortest walk from the away section but can draw a queue. Aston involves a longer walk and may give you a more useful choice of city-bound trains, depending on the timetable.

The AV82 shuttle picks up on Grosvenor Road and heads back towards New Street. Post-match departure windows vary between published sources, so do not assume a late bus will be waiting after a cup tie that runs to extra time.

If driving, expect slow departures from roads around the stadium and possible delays leaving paid car parks. Stay with the directions for your booked site rather than trying to drive through the Witton Lane or Trinity Road closures. Leave extra time for a rail connection or a long journey home.

Return by rail

Shuttle return stop

Traffic exclusion after full-time
Usually around 30–60 minutes, subject to crowd movement.
Car park exit experience
Fan reports about Y International range from around 15 minutes to roughly an hour; no reliable universal time.

Where to stay

Stay around Birmingham New Street if you are arriving by rail or want to enjoy the city before the match. The journey to Witton is short and the AV82 shuttle provides another choice, while you have more restaurants and late-evening options than immediately around Villa Park.

Broad Street and Brindleyplace suit a trip centred on pubs and the evening, though you will still need to get back towards New Street for the straightforward rail connection. A room around Aston is worth considering only when a shorter stadium journey matters more than wider choice.

For a late kick-off or European cup tie, check your last train home before deciding against a hotel. Extra time, station queues and the walk from the away end can all make a tight connection unrealistic.

Best general stay area
Birmingham city centre near New Street: direct local travel to Witton plus widest all-round evening choice.
Nightlife stay area
Broad Street / Brindleyplace with onward transfer back towards New Street for Villa Park.
Near-ground option
Aston is football-convenient but offers fewer hotel and evening choices; compare independently.

PUB / BAR

Gosta Green

Holt Street, Gosta Green, Birmingham, B7 4BG
Usually away-friendlyFood available
BEST FORlarger away groups  · supporters wanting food and football on screens before heading to Villa Park
MATCHDAY INTELGosta Green is one of the more useful larger-group options away from the immediate Villa Park pub restrictions. Current away-day guides actively market it to visiting supporters, while CAMRA confirms that it reopened and is trading, with food service, sports TV and a garden. It suits supporters who prefer a sizeable pre-match base rather than gambling on a stadium-side door policy.
WORTH KNOWINGThe pub reopened in 2026 after a closure, so it is worth retaining a current-status check in the review workflow.
PUB / BAR

The Square Peg

115 Corporation Street, Birmingham, West Midlands, B4 6PH
Usually away-friendlyFood available
BEST FORaway supporters arriving in central Birmingham  · groups wanting food before travelling on to Villa Park  · supporters avoiding stadium-side pub restrictions
MATCHDAY INTELThe Square Peg is a practical city-centre fallback with unusually strong current visiting-club evidence. Brentford's February 2026 Villa Park guide says city-centre pubs welcome away fans and specifically points supporters to The Square Peg. The current Wetherspoon page confirms it is open, serves food and permits under-18s during stated daytime/evening hours.
WORTH KNOWINGThe venue's normal under-18 policy is published, but football-specific door or colours restrictions can still change on the day.
PUB / BAR

The Aston Tavern

10 Aston Hall Road, Birmingham, B6 7FF
Away access: fixture dependentFamily friendlyFood available
BEST FORhome supporters who want a more organised pre-match venue  · families already using the venue's matchday membership
MATCHDAY INTELThe Aston Tavern is a polished matchday option with a very explicit 2026/27 membership model rather than a casual away-pub proposition. Its current membership page advertises free entry to all matchday events for members, priority/guaranteed entry, free entry for children and matchday meal benefits. The venue also operates a restaurant and bar. There is not strong enough current evidence to label it away-friendly.
WORTH KNOWINGThe 2026/27 annual membership is £85; non-member matchday entry rules and away-fan admission should be checked directly.
PUB / BAR

The Tennis Court

Walsall Road, Perry Barr, Birmingham, B42 1TY
Away access: fixture dependentFamily friendly
BEST FORaway supporters who want a pub identified by visiting-club guidance  · groups prepared to use Perry Barr rather than rely on pubs beside Villa Park
MATCHDAY INTELThis is the strongest current candidate for a dedicated away pub.
WORTH KNOWINGTreat the away designation as fixture-dependent. The current Craft Union page confirms the pub is open and children are welcome, but it does not advertise a food menu; older listings that say food is served conflict with more recent venue information.
PUB / BAR

Sports Illustrated Warehouse

Away access: fixture dependentFood available
BEST FORhome supporters wanting an official pre-match fan-zone experience  · supporters who want food, drink and entertainment at Villa Park
MATCHDAY INTELThe Sports Illustrated Warehouse is now part of Villa Park's official fan-experience estate.
WORTH KNOWINGDo not assume the all-supporters access publicised for a May 2026 WSL fixture applies to men's fixtures. Check the specific matchday guide.
PUB / BAR

The Yew Tree

Brookvale Road, Witton, Birmingham, B6 7AS
Away access: fixture dependentColours: check
BEST FORaway supporters only after checking the fixture-specific door policy  · supporters prioritising a pub near the ground over certainty
MATCHDAY INTELThe Yew Tree remains a genuine but uncertain away-day lead.
WORTH KNOWINGEntry charges and away admission are volatile; do not publish a fixed charge or colours policy without fixture-day confirmation.
PUB / BAR

The Wellington

37 Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, B2 5SN
Away access: fixture dependentLimited food
BEST FORreal-ale drinkers using the city centre before Villa Park  · supporters who prefer a traditional pub over a large sports bar
MATCHDAY INTELThe Wellington is a credible city-centre supporter lead rather than a designated away pub.
WORTH KNOWINGThe venue website says over-18s only, while Black Country Ales lists children allowed until 7pm; treat family suitability as check-before-going.
PUB / BAR

The Witton Arms

458 Witton Road, Birmingham, B6 6SN
Not for away fansFamily friendly
BEST FORhome supporters wanting a traditional pre-match pub atmosphere  · Villa fans who want to stay close to the ground
MATCHDAY INTELThe Witton Arms is still one of the key pubs in the Villa Park matchday scene, but current evidence says it should now be treated as a home-supporter venue rather than an away pub. The pub's own website explicitly says it welcomes home fans, CAMRA describes it as home-fans-only on matchdays, Brentford's February 2026 guide says it no longer accepts away fans, and Arsenal supporters reported the same change in August 2026.
WORTH KNOWINGOlder away guides that still describe the Witton Arms as an away pub are out of date.

TAKEAWAY / QUICK BITE

Pizza Shack

Where it is237-239 Witton Road, Aston, Birmingham, B6 6NUView on map ↗

Pizza Shack is one of the stronger near-ground food leads because it is both current and independently verifiable. The Halal Monitoring Committee shows active 2026 certification checks at the Witton Road address, while a 2026 Football Ground Guide article identifies it as a regular matchday food option near Villa Park.

Away access: fixture dependentFood available
BEST FORa quick pre-match bite near the Villa Park area  · supporters wanting takeaway rather than a pub meal
WORTH KNOWINGNo current evidence has been found for football-specific admission or colours restrictions; it is treated simply as a food stop.
TAKEAWAY / QUICK BITE

Fay's Jamaican

Where it is419 Witton Road, Aston, Birmingham, B6 6SPView on map ↗

Fay's Jamaican is a useful food-first option on Witton Road. It appears to be trading in 2026 through current delivery/listing evidence, and the Food Standards Agency still records the business at this address. Football Ground Guide specifically highlighted it in a 2026 Villa Park food feature, which makes it more relevant than a generic nearby restaurant.

Away access: fixture dependentFood available
BEST FORsupporters wanting a proper takeaway meal near the ground area  · jerk chicken, curry and Jamaican sides before or after the match
WORTH KNOWINGOpening hours vary between current listings, so editors should avoid publishing a fixed matchday opening time without a direct venue check.
