Match night · 2 guests · 1 room
Maldron Hotel Manchester Central Cathedral Quarter
Cathedral Quarter / Chapel Street, Salford edge of Manchester city centre
The best all-round football-trip base. It is on the Salford side of the centre, close to Victoria/Shudehill for the 97/98 buses, but still central enough for proper food and drinks after the match. Current Booking.com evidence is strong on cleanliness, comfort, staff and location, and its quieter-date pricing is competitive for a modern four-star hotel.
- Useful position between Salford and Manchester city centre rather than being stranded by the ground.
- Close to Manchester Victoria and Shudehill for the simplest public-transport run to Moor Lane.
Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Treat this as a bus/taxi base: 97/98 from Shudehill stop near the stadium, then about an eight-minute walk.
It is not walk-to-the-turnstile accommodation; use the bus or a taxi.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Woodthorpe Hotel
Prestwich / Bury Old Road
The closest practical hotel-style stay now that Fairways Lodge has gone. It is a historic Joseph Holt pub with just three en-suite rooms, free parking, food and a bar, and it is close enough to walk to the Peninsula Stadium. That convenience is real, but so are the limitations: tiny inventory, weaker nightlife than the city centre and a thinner review base.
- FootyGrounds lists it about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes on foot from the Peninsula Stadium.
- The Joseph Holt site confirms three en-suite rooms, a pub/restaurant and free parking.
Supporter-ground mapping lists Woodthorpe at about 0.8 miles / 15 minutes' walk from the stadium.
Only three rooms are advertised by the operator, so availability can disappear quickly.
Compare live rates and room options for your dates.
Motel One Manchester-Royal Exchange
Royal Exchange / central Manchester
Best if the hotel is part of the night out rather than just the match logistics. Cross Street puts you between the Royal Exchange, Deansgate, Printworks and the Northern Quarter, while Victoria/Shudehill are still close enough for the Moor Lane bus. The hotel is consistently praised for cleanliness, staff and location, but rooms are deliberately compact.
- Excellent walkable position for pubs, bars, restaurants, the Northern Quarter and Deansgate.
- Still practical for the 97/98 bus from Shudehill to the stadium.
Approximate straight-line distance from published coordinates. Use Shudehill's 97/98 bus or a taxi rather than walking.
Rooms are frequently described as small/compact.

What to expect at Salford City
All the key information for Colchester United supporters heading to AIG Stadium — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.
Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.
Travel & parking
Driving, parking and rail planning for Colchester United supporters travelling to Salford City.
Choose a topic for the full journey advice.
Parking
Driving & road restrictions
Set your navigation for the AIG Stadium, Moor Lane, Salford M7 3PZ, but arrange parking before entering the residential approaches. Visiting-club directions use M60 junction 17, then the A56 Bury New Road towards Manchester, turning into Moor Lane near St Paul's Church.
The immediate streets are subject to matchday permit controls, and some stretches of Moor Lane have waiting or loading restrictions. Those rules can be enforced even when a road looks quiet. Do not use Nevile Road as a shortcut to the away entrance if your ticket points you to Moor Lane.
Roadworks and temporary diversions can alter the final approach, so check current traffic information before departure. Leave additional time for the last few miles and for pedestrians gathering outside the turnstiles.
- Driving postcode
- M7 3PZ (Moor Lane away entrance)
- Typical motorway approach
- M60 junction 17, A56/Bury New Road towards Manchester, then Moor Lane
- Resident parking restriction
- Kersal matchday permit streets and Moor Lane waiting controls; obey individual signs
- One-way restriction history
- 2017 Kersal traffic orders included a one-way proposal for part of Blackfield Lane; do not assume current drive-through access without checking signage
Parking & park-and-ride
Book an authorised driveway near Moor Lane if you want to drive right to Salford City. There is no public supporter car park at the stadium, and matchday permit restrictions cover much of the surrounding residential area. A speculative search for free street parking close to kick-off is not a sensible plan.
For nearby parking, JustPark lists privately offered driveways on Christie Lane, Vine Street and Norwood Avenue. Check the precise entrance, price, vehicle size and booking window before paying. A booked off-road driveway is different from parking in a residents-only bay on the same road.
For genuinely free parking, use a council car park farther away rather than an unverified Kersal street. Bury Council lists the Longfield Centre and Fairfax Road car parks in Prestwich as free. From the Longfield Centre, take the 97 or 98 towards Manchester and get off at Kersal Bar, then walk along Moor Lane. Bus fares apply, and spaces are not guaranteed.
The nearby restriction zone includes Nevile Road, Norwood Avenue and Castlemoor Avenue, with controlled sections of Oaklands Road and Blackfield Lane. It operates noon–7pm for 3pm kick-offs and 5–11pm for 7.45pm starts. Some Moor Lane bays have a one-hour matchday limit, so they are unsuitable for a football visit.
Allow around four to five hours for parking, walking, pre-match arrival, the game and departure. We could not verify any particular free on-street section for that whole period. Supermarket parking is not a safe substitute without explicit football-use permission. If local bookings are unavailable, park legally in Prestwich and use the bus.
- Parking verdict
- Booking advisable for near-ground driving; authorised free car park plus bus is the budget alternative; no specific legal free residential street verified
- Free option — area
- Longfield Centre public car park, Prestwich M25 1AY: Bury Council lists it as free; catch 97/98 from Bury New Road towards Kersal Bar
- Free option — area
- Fairfax Road council car park, Prestwich M25 1AS: listed free, 162 standard and six accessible spaces; check onward bus connection and operating conditions
- Legal restrictions — area

- Legal restrictions — area
- Mesnefield Road was added to the matchday residents-parking arrangement in 2018
- Legal restrictions — area
- Specified sections of Moor Lane have one-hour maximum stay with no return within two hours during event times; other sections have waiting prohibitions
- Matchday availability — area
- Nearby unreserved road parking is limited and subject to matchday competition; supporters have reported use of farther roads but these anecdotes cannot establish permission
- Matchday availability — area
- Bury council car parks are unreserved: availability cannot be guaranteed even when parking is free
- Walk — area
- Private Christie Lane driveway listing says around six minutes on foot to Salford City FC; walk to exact away gate may differ
- Walk — area
- Longfield Centre to Bury New Road bus stop, then bus to Kersal Bar and final walk on Moor Lane; exact combined journey time unverified
- Arrive by — area
- Allow at least 60–90 minutes before kick-off and more if driving to an unreserved car park; this is a planning recommendation, not verified availability
- Paid fallback
- JustPark private driveways on Vine Street, Christie Lane, Norwood Avenue and Greene Way; price and duration set for your fixture
- Booking recommendation
- Reserve an expressly authorised off-road driveway before travelling if parking near the stadium; follow exact space instructions
- Total dwell time
- Plan approximately 4–5 hours for arrival, walking, pre-match time, 90 minutes plus half-time/stoppage and exit; longer for extra-time fixtures
- After the match
- Return via Moor Lane to a booked driveway, or the 97/98 towards Prestwich for Longfield Centre parking; check service and road restrictions
- Saturday 3pm matchday resident controls
- 12:00–19:00 in specified Kersal resident-only bays
- 7.45pm matchday resident controls
- 17:00–23:00 in specified Kersal resident-only bays
- Stadium supporters car park
- false
- Old Agecroft club park-and-ride
- Not currently confirmed; club accessibility information says it stopped in 2021/22 despite older independent guide still mentioning it
- Blue Badge exception
- Club says a correctly displayed Blue Badge with clock permits up to three hours in the restricted zone, subject to badge rules; full football visit may exceed this

Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Manchester Victoria is the most useful mainline arrival station for Salford City. Moor Lane is too far away for most supporters to walk from central Manchester, so take a bus towards Bury or arrange a taxi for the final journey.
From Shudehill or the Victoria area, use a 97 or 98 bus towards Prestwich and Bury. Get off on Bury New Road at Kersal Bar, by Moor Lane, then follow Moor Lane uphill towards the away entrance near St Paul's Church. Check the temporary Victoria-area bus diversion before travelling.
Heaton Park and Prestwich are Metrolink alternatives, but neither is at the stadium. You still need a longer walk or onward bus journey. Manchester Victoria has step-free platform access; do not assume the complete route to the turnstile is step-free.
- Recommended rail arrival
- Manchester Victoria: use Bee Network 97/98 towards Bury or a taxi to Kersal Bar and Moor Lane
- Mainline station accessibility
- Manchester Victoria lists category A step-free access to all platforms and lifts
- Bus connection
- 97 and 98 stop at Bury New Road near Moor Lane
- Victoria diversion
- Current Bee Network information lists a bus diversion at Manchester Victoria from 25 February to 31 December 2026
- Rail alternative
- Clifton (Manchester) is a local Northern station but has an indirect onward journey and limited facilities
- Heaton Park lift
- The Bury-bound platform lift has been out of service during replacement works since 29 July 2026; check reopening before accessible travel
Station to ground & away entrance
Use the Moor Lane entrance for the away end, not Nevile Road. The AIG Stadium is also called Moor Lane or the Peninsula Stadium, and the visiting-supporter sat-nav address is M7 3PZ.
Away supporters normally enter through Turnstile Block A beside St Paul's Church, towards the eastern end of Moor Lane. The East Stand houses visiting terracing, with some seated allocations in the North Stand; both normally use the same entrance. Follow the allocation and turnstile printed on your ticket if your fixture differs.
If you arrive on the 97 or 98, leave the bus at Kersal Bar on Bury New Road. Walk along Moor Lane to the eastern turnstiles, allowing for the narrow pavements and queues immediately outside the ground.

Coaches
Away coaches
If you are on an organised away coach, expect the set-down point on Moor Lane immediately outside the away turnstiles. That is the arrangement published in Salford's accessibility information, and Turnstile Block A is normally the entrance for both visiting terraces and seating.
Confirm the exact pick-up point with your coach organiser before kick-off. A narrow pavement and busy residential approach can make access awkward, particularly if a wheelchair lift or ramp is needed. Ask the organiser and Salford's accessibility contact to coordinate a suitable drop-off position rather than assume every coach can stop in the same place.
After full-time, follow your organiser's instructions and leave enough time to get back to the coach without cutting through the home-supporter entrances.

Buses
Buses & local travel
Take the 97 or 98 from the Manchester Victoria or Shudehill side if you want the simplest public transport journey. Both serve Bury New Road at Kersal Bar, with a final walk along Moor Lane to Turnstile Block A.
For the return, use the stop on Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane for services towards Manchester Shudehill. Check the Bee Network departure board rather than relying on an old timetable, particularly for evening kick-offs. Some other Bury New Road services also run towards the city centre.
From Prestwich, the same 97 and 98 corridor is useful heading towards Manchester. No dedicated Salford City stadium park-and-ride shuttle is currently confirmed, so do not travel expecting the older Agecroft service.
- Outbound buses from Manchester
- 97 and 98 towards Bury, alighting at Kersal Bar near Moor Lane
- Return buses towards Manchester
- 97 and 98 towards Shudehill from Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane
- Prestwich boarding point
- Bury New Road/Longfield Centre is served by 97 and 98 towards Shudehill
- Other buses
- The club also identifies routes 93, 95 and X43 for nearby corridors; stops and times need fixture checking
- Stadium park-and-ride status
- Club/Level Playing Field information states the Agecroft stadium shuttle stopped from the start of 2021/22; no current restart verified
Accessibility
Accessible journeys
Arrange accessible tickets and the exact viewing position with Salford City before travelling. The usual away entrance is Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane, and the club describes a ramp down into the away area. However, recent wheelchair-user reviews report difficulties with away-end sightlines and seating arrangements.
Level Playing Field currently lists disability liaison contact Andrew Giblin on 07808 254 646 or andy.giblin@salfordcityfc.co.uk. Ask about your companion's seat, the route to the accessible toilet, and whether any viewing position is in a home area. Do not assume that an older description of North Stand wheelchair bays guarantees your exact allocation.
There is no general stadium car park. Salford states Blue Badge holders may park in the matchday permit zone for up to three hours, with badge and clock correctly displayed. That can be too short for a complete visit, so agree a lawful drop-off and parking plan in advance.
- Accessible away entrance

- Disabled supporter contact
- Andrew Giblin, Disability Liaison Officer: 07808 254 646; andy.giblin@salfordcityfc.co.uk (as listed by Level Playing Field)
- Wheelchair viewing issue
- Recent first-hand supporter reports describe allocation to home areas or obstructed away positions; confirm seat and companion arrangements before purchase
- Blue Badge permit-zone exception
- Club 2026 guidance allows correctly displayed Blue Badge parking for up to three hours, subject to applicable rules
- Stadium on-site accessible parking generally available
- false
- Heaton Park tram accessibility
- Bury-bound platform lift under replacement since 29 July 2026; do not assume step-free interchange
After the match
After the match
For the simplest exit, walk back along Moor Lane to your authorised parking space or to the Kersal Bar bus stops. Drivers should expect pedestrians on narrow residential streets, while the permit controls continue well after full-time. Do not move into a nearby residents-only bay while waiting for traffic to clear.
If heading to Manchester, catch a 97 or 98 towards Shudehill from Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane. For a car parked at the Longfield Centre in Prestwich, travel in the opposite direction towards Bury and get off at the Longfield Centre.
Check the final bus for evening fixtures and leave a comfortable margin for any onward train. A booked driveway confirms parking permission, not a traffic-free departure.
- Return to Manchester
- 97/98 towards Shudehill from Kersal Bar, Bury New Road opposite Moor Lane
- Return to free Prestwich parking
- 97/98 northbound towards Bury, get off at Longfield Centre
- Matchday restrictions after 3pm kickoff
- Residents-only controls continue until 19:00
- Matchday restrictions after 7.45pm kickoff
- Residents-only controls continue until 23:00
- Booked driveway exit guarantee
- Parking booking authorises the space but does not guarantee an unrestricted road exit
Where to stay
Stay near Manchester Victoria or Shudehill if you want the best balance of football transport, restaurants and an evening out. Both are useful for catching the 97 or 98 towards Salford City, without needing a car in Kersal's residents-only streets.
The Cathedral Quarter is an easy base for a longer away trip. Maldron Manchester Cathedral Quarter advertises a short walk to Victoria station, with central Manchester's food and bars within reach. Allow for a bus or taxi to Moor Lane rather than assuming the ground is walkable from the hotel.
Prestwich is a quieter alternative if you want to approach the ground from the north using the same bus corridor. Staying close to Moor Lane is less useful for an evening out, and hotel prices can change considerably when Manchester has major events.
- Recommended overnight area
- Manchester Victoria/Shudehill/Cathedral Quarter, using the 97/98 to Moor Lane
- Example rail-convenient hotel
- Maldron Manchester Cathedral Quarter, 30 Chapel Street, near Manchester Victoria
- Northside alternative
- Prestwich, using the 97 or 98 via Bury New Road
- Stay by the stadium trade-off
- Kersal is residential with fewer immediate leisure options than Manchester city centre

Salford City play at Moor Lane, now branded the AIG Stadium, in a residential part of Kersal where you cannot rely on a pub beside the turnstiles. Manchester Victoria is the practical rail arrival: meet around NOMA or the Northern Quarter, then use the 93 or 97/98 bus north rather than walking three miles. Away supporters enter Turnstile Block A on Moor Lane for the East Terrace and allocated North Stand seats. For a pint nearer the ground, the community-owned Star Inn is the most characterful lead; the food-serving Friendship Inn is a more straightforward group choice. Both need a match-specific check on away colours. For food, Lupo’s Italian café rewards a planned detour, while Babs’ Café supplies burgers, pies and hot dogs inside the away enclosure. Mackie Mayor works well for mixed groups eating around Victoria. Prestwich pubs and chippies make more sense if staying north; the Quays are not a convenient ground-side base. The home bars are not an away-pub fallback, and kick-off times can change opening and admission arrangements.

Food & quick bites
Where to grab a bite, have a proper meal or try the local matchday favourite.
Babs’ Café – away-end kiosk
A genuine away-end option rather than a home fanzone: Babs’ Café sells the basics behind the East Terrace, with another unit for beer and snacks alongside.
Lupo Caffè Italiano
A worthwhile proper-meal option close to the wider Moor Lane area: freshly made Roman-style pizza, pasta, arancini and good coffee in an out-of-the-way industrial-estate café.
Mackie Mayor
The easiest proper group-meal meeting point around Victoria: independent kitchens under one roof, so everyone can choose something different before the northbound bus.
The Koffee Pot
A better early-train stop than gambling on food near Moor Lane: proper Manchester breakfast culture on Oldham Street before you catch the bus north.
Chips @ No.8
A proper chippy option for after the football if you are staying in Prestwich, rather than a close-to-turnstiles pre-match snack.
Vibe Coffee
For fans based in Salford rather than near Victoria, this Broughton Lane café offers cooked breakfast baps, sandwiches and a decent coffee before the trip north.
JS On The Corner
A substantial kosher meal on the northern approach: schnitzel, shawarma and hot salt beef make this more than a generic takeaway.
Ta’am Grill
If you want a meal instead of the stadium kiosk on a midweek visit, Ta’am does kosher grilled meat, hummus and shawarma on Bury New Road.
