FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW BRISTOL ROVERS TO NORTHAMPTON TOWN

This fixture is still months away, on 2 January. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If Bristol Rovers are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

Bristol Rovers are 16th in League Two after 12 league games, with 15 points. Before the season, they were seen as promotion favourites. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Northampton Town are 23rd in League Two after 10 league games, with 10 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as promotion and play-off contenders. They have ground to make up on that early ambition.

Bristol Rovers's last five recorded league games brought one win and four defeats: three points from a possible fifteen. Recent results give Northampton Town four points from a possible fifteen, with one win, one draw and three defeats in their last five league games. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

The destination is Sixfields Stadium in Northampton. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters staying overnight, base yourself in or just west of Northampton town centre, especially around Silver Street, Mare Fair/Gold Street or the central Bridge Street/Swan Street side. That keeps the station and evening options useful while leaving Sixfields roughly a 30-40 minute walk depending on the exact hotel, or a short taxi ride. Choose Upton Way only when getting to/from the ground with minimum fuss matters more than the evening. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

Make the football the reason to go and give yourself enough time to enjoy it. Check the confirmed kick-off and ticket arrangements before committing to travel or a hotel, then choose the plan that lets you support Bristol Rovers from the away end without rushing the whole day.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Mercure Northampton

Mercure Northampton

Silver Street / Northampton town centre

The best balance rather than the closest bed. Mercure gives travelling supporters a proper town-centre hotel, a short walk from the rail side of the centre, easy access to food and drinks after the match, and a current 8.1 Booking.com score after its 2024 refurbishment. You sacrifice the five-minute stadium walk of Upton Way, but gain a much better overnight football trip.

  • Town-centre position works for both rail arrivals and post-match food/drink.
  • Sixfields is still walkable for a fit supporter; taxi/bus is straightforward if weather or time makes the walk unattractive.
The match journey

Approximate practical walking relationship. Straight-line distance from hotel coordinates to the Sixfields postcode centroid is about 1.47 miles; road/pedestrian routing is longer. Taxi is the easier option after a late game or in poor weather.

The trade-off

Not the closest hotel to Sixfields; allow roughly half an hour on foot rather than a few minutes.

Mercure Northampton

Silver Street / Northampton town centre

Our view

The best balance rather than the closest bed. Mercure gives travelling supporters a proper town-centre hotel, a short walk from the rail side of the centre, easy access to food and drinks after the match, and a current 8.1 Booking.com score after its 2024 refurbishment. You sacrifice the five-minute stadium walk of Upton Way, but gain a much better overnight football trip.

Why it suits this trip

  • Town-centre position works for both rail arrivals and post-match food/drink.
  • Sixfields is still walkable for a fit supporter; taxi/bus is straightforward if weather or time makes the walk unattractive.
  • Verified Booking.com coverage with a large current review base.
  • Refurbished/rebranded in 2024 and current review evidence is mostly positive for cleanliness, staff, comfort and central location.
  • Sampled weekend prices were materially lower than sampled midweek business nights, making it particularly competitive for many Saturday football trips.

Getting to the ground

Approximate practical walking relationship. Straight-line distance from hotel coordinates to the Sixfields postcode centroid is about 1.47 miles; road/pedestrian routing is longer. Taxi is the easier option after a late game or in poor weather.

Pubs and the evening

Central location puts the hotel within an easy walk of Bridge Street, Gold Street, Market Square and other town-centre pubs, bars and restaurants.

Arriving by train

Very convenient for rail arrivals: Booking.com describes the hotel as about five minutes' walk from the railway/bus station; allow roughly 5-10 minutes in practice with luggage.

The trade-offs

  • Not the closest hotel to Sixfields; allow roughly half an hour on foot rather than a few minutes.
  • Parking terms can differ by booking channel; a 2026 Tripadvisor review specifically noted a parking charge when booking through a third party.
  • A recent Tripadvisor reviewer described presentation/maintenance as tired, so the refurbishment has not produced uniformly positive room feedback.

Research price context

Sampled rates averaged about £117 midweek but about £71 on non-home-match Friday/Saturday nights. In this sample the weekend was roughly 39% cheaper than midweek, so Northampton business demand can make weekends unusually good value.

Travelodge Northampton Upton Way

Travelodge Northampton Upton Way

Sixfields / Upton Way

This is the hotel to choose when the ground matters more than Northampton itself. Travelodge says it is opposite Sixfields, and the measured relationship is only about 0.2 miles. That is extremely convenient before and after the match, but the surrounding retail park is not a proper evening base and recent guest feedback is more mixed than at the central picks.

  • Genuinely opposite Sixfields Stadium: the easiest hotel for getting to the turnstiles and back after full-time.
  • Budget positioning and sampled rates were consistently lower than the central four-star choices.
The match journey

Clear category winner for proximity. Travelodge's official page says the hotel is opposite Sixfields; geodesic distance from returned hotel coordinates to the stadium postcode centroid is about 0.18 miles.

The trade-off

The hotel is on the western edge of Northampton, around 3 miles from the town centre according to Travelodge, so it is poor for a proper post-match night out.

Why it suits this trip

  • Genuinely opposite Sixfields Stadium: the easiest hotel for getting to the turnstiles and back after full-time.
  • Budget positioning and sampled rates were consistently lower than the central four-star choices.
  • Limited free parking is useful for drivers, although it is shared and first-come, first-served.
  • Retail-park restaurants, cinema and convenience options are nearby for a simple football-first stay.
  • Travelodge affiliate/direct coverage is verified.

Getting to the ground

Clear category winner for proximity. Travelodge's official page says the hotel is opposite Sixfields; geodesic distance from returned hotel coordinates to the stadium postcode centroid is about 0.18 miles.

Pubs and the evening

Useful for chain food, cinema and nearby pubs/restaurants, but not Northampton's main late-night cluster. Travelodge itself places the town centre about 3 miles away.

Arriving by train

Travelodge states the hotel is about 2 miles from Northampton station. For luggage or after dark, taxi/bus is preferable to treating this as a station hotel.

The trade-offs

  • The hotel is on the western edge of Northampton, around 3 miles from the town centre according to Travelodge, so it is poor for a proper post-match night out.
  • Recent review evidence is mixed: complaints include tired condition, hot-water/cleanliness issues and weak soundproofing.
  • A July 2026 solo reviewer liked the nearby amenities but was uncomfortable with part of the late-evening walk through the retail-park area.
  • No lift; Travelodge states accessible rooms are on the ground floor.
  • Booking.com coverage was not verified in repeated Northampton searches.

Research price context

The six sampled metasearch totals converted to roughly £45–£60 midweek and £38–£56 on Friday/Saturday nights, averaging about £54 and £45 respectively. The sample therefore showed a modest weekend discount rather than a premium.

Premier Inn Northampton Town Centre

Swan Street / central Northampton

The nightlife choice because it puts the supporter in central Northampton rather than beside a retail park. Swan Street is close to Royal & Derngate and an easy walk to Bridge Street/Horseshoe Street bars, restaurants and late venues. Recent review quality is notably strong for the price segment. The cost is a longer trip back to Sixfields and no Booking.com coverage verified in our checks.

  • Best of the primary choices for walking into Northampton's main evening food/drink and late-bar areas.
  • Current Tripadvisor score of 4.5/5 from roughly 980 reviews is strong for a value chain.
The match journey

Straight-line distance to the stadium postcode centroid is about 1.72 miles; the practical pedestrian route is longer. Walkable for a fit supporter, but taxi/bus is preferable after an evening kick-off or for groups.

The trade-off

Farther from Sixfields than Mercure and much farther than Upton Way; a taxi after the match is the sensible option if you do not want a long walk.

  • Current Tripadvisor score of 4.5/5 from roughly 980 reviews is strong for a value chain.
  • Recent 2026 reviewers repeatedly praise central location, clean rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff and effective air conditioning.
  • Restaurant on site and paid St John's car park next door make it straightforward even if you do not go out after the match.
  • Sampled Friday/Saturday prices were often lower than midweek business nights.

Getting to the ground

Straight-line distance to the stadium postcode centroid is about 1.72 miles; the practical pedestrian route is longer. Walkable for a fit supporter, but taxi/bus is preferable after an evening kick-off or for groups.

Pubs and the evening

Swan Street is in the core town centre. Northampton BID lists multiple pubs, bars and clubs around nearby Bridge Street and Horseshoe Street, with further eating/drinking around St Giles Street, Derngate, Market Square and Drapery.

Arriving by train

Not as close to the station as Mercure or ibis; allow roughly 15-20 minutes on foot across the town centre, or a short taxi.

The trade-offs

  • Farther from Sixfields than Mercure and much farther than Upton Way; a taxi after the match is the sensible option if you do not want a long walk.
  • No on-site parking; the official hotel page directs guests to the chargeable St John's car park next door.
  • Recent reviews occasionally mention noisy ventilation/air-conditioning and inconsistent Wi-Fi.
  • Booking.com coverage was not verified in repeated Northampton searches, so this is an editorial nightlife pick rather than the best affiliate-covered pick.

Research price context

Rates were volatile: the sampled metasearch totals converted to roughly £50–£118 midweek and £47–£81 on Friday/Saturday nights. The weekend average was about £65, around 28% below the sampled midweek average.

What to expect at Northampton Town

All the key information for Bristol Rovers supporters heading to Sixfields Stadium — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

#UTG
YOUR AWAY DAY · Sixfields Stadium

The ground

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Sixfields is a compact modern lower-league ground whose East Stand was finally completed in 2025. For years the unfinished side was its most conspicuous feature. Stand names, the south-entrance memorial and memories of Jimmy's Hill during Coventry's groundshare now offer visitors more to notice around the finished stadium.

Recorded capacity
7,653

Views from the away section

Away South Stand has no supporting pillars, clear sightlines and is close to the pitch.

Why the ground matters

The 1994 move replaced a three-sided ground shared with cricket with purpose-built Sixfields. Dave Bowen's stand name, the Walter Tull memorial and Hotel End language preserved earlier memories. The East Stand's long delay then added a history of its own.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Atmosphere & acoustics

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Close, covered away seating can create a lively atmosphere.

From the supporters

Supporter observation

Sixfields is noticeably better when both the home crowd and away end are well populated. A big travelling following and a near-full ground can transform the place, so expect the best atmosphere at local, promotion or high-demand fixtures.

The Liquidator / 'Cobblers' response

A current chant archive describes the instrumental as the team walkout cue, with the crowd inserting the club nickname. Treat as changeable matchday practice.

Anti-Peterborough songbook

Independent matchday writing describes older anti-Posh material still being recognised by younger Northampton fans, useful evidence that the Nene rivalry is inherited rather than newly manufactured.

Walkout to The Liquidator

A simple pre-match cue that lets the nickname become a collective shout.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Sixfields Stadium

Food & drink

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Sixfields is a retail-park ground, not a pub crawl. Northampton railway station is about two miles away; meet by the station or Thomas A Becket in St James if travelling together, then follow St James’ Mill Road, Harvey Reeves Road and Edgar Mobbs Way towards the stadium, or use a bus or taxi. The usual visiting allocation is the South Stand, although smaller followings can be moved into the East Stand, so check the ticket.

Food and drink around the ground

At the ground, Carr’s Bar is reported to welcome visitors and The Sixfields Hungry Horse has a recent away-fan account, but no blanket away-colours promise. The old Walter Tull recommendation is out of date: CAMRA marks it long-term closed. Food is more interesting before leaving town: Gold Street has independent breakfast and lunch stops, while Duston and Upton have chippies for drivers arriving from the west. The stadium kiosks are a practical fallback.

For an overnight stay, the station/Mare Fair hotels suit rail travellers; Duston’s Hopping Hare is better suited to drivers.

The Sixfields

The simplest food-and-drink stop by Sixfields: a family-friendly pub with Sky and TNT sport, a play area and a full kitchen. Newport fans reported being served here in September 2026.

Carr's Bar / Sixfields Stadium supporter bar

Carr's Bar is the most practical ground-side drinking option. A Plymouth Argyle away guide published in April 2026 says the stadium supporters bar welcomes away fans, and the current Football Ground Guide also identifies Carr's Bar as admitting visiting supporters.

Northampton's food-and-drink information says hot food is sold through stadium kiosks but not in Carr's Bar itself. The away section also has its own bar after entry and pitchside refreshments. Exact bar opening arrangements can still be fixture-dependent.

The Malt Shovel Tavern

The Malt Shovel is the strongest evidence-led town-side pub choice. CAMRA's listing was updated in late September 2026 and records a broad cask range, while Oxford and Cheltenham supporter sources have independently used or recommended it for Northampton away days.

  • real-ale drinkers arriving by train
  • supporters who want a proper pub before travelling on to Sixfields
  • an earlier town-centre stop rather than a leisure-park pre-match

There is no current published football-specific away-fan or colours policy. Treat it as a good town-side pub option rather than a guaranteed designated away pub, and check any fixture-specific restrictions.

Thomas A Becket

Thomas A Becket is a practical St James-side option rather than a verified football away pub. Its current official site confirms food, live Sky/TNT sport and matchday food-vendor partnerships, while CAMRA marks it family-friendly. A 2025 visiting rugby supporter also reported using it as an away fan without issue.

  • rail arrivals wanting food before heading towards Sixfields
  • supporters who want televised sport with their pre-match drink
  • families wanting a pub with a proper food offer

The away-fan evidence is rugby rather than Northampton Town football, so football-match admission and colours remain unverified. Use it as a good route-side food-and-sport option, not as a guaranteed away-designated pub.

The Sevens

The Sevens is current, open and explicitly football-focused, with Craft Union promoting extensive live football coverage. It is also still listed by current ground guides as a pub option near Sixfields, but no strong recent source was found confirming Northampton Town away-fan admission.

  • watching televised football before the game
  • a pub stop on the St James side
  • supporters prioritising sport on screens over a food-led stop

Keep away access and colours as unknown until a fixture-specific or venue source confirms them. The current evidence is strong for operation and sports-pub character, weaker for visiting-football-fan policy.

McDonald's Northampton Sixfields

This is a practical food-only fallback rather than a supporter pub. The Sixfields branch is currently operating, and recent visiting-club and ground guides specifically identify McDonald's among the food options around the stadium.

  • families wanting a predictable food stop
  • drivers staying around the Sixfields leisure park

There is no football-specific admission issue identified for the restaurant, but no claim is made about colours. It is included because immediate independent food choice around Sixfields is dominated by leisure-park chains.

Carr's Bar (Sixfields Stadium)

Carr’s Bar by the main stand is identified by both a visiting-club briefing and Football Ground Guide as welcoming away supporters. For hot food use the stadium kiosks instead.

Malt Shovel Tavern

Accessibility

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Arrange accessible parking through Northampton Town’s ticket office before matchday. The club says most home accessible spaces are already seasonally allocated and remaining home and away spaces are first come, first served by advance booking. A Blue Badge does not guarantee that you can turn up and use a stadium bay.

Accessible journeys

The visiting wheelchair positions are normally in front of the stands, with accessible toilets and facilities provided, but the exact allocation should be confirmed with the club. Contact disability liaison officer Wendy Lambell if you need a drop-off arrangement, wheelchair position or audio-commentary headset. Northampton railway station has step-free access to all platforms.

The 55 serves Sixfields, but check the boarding arrangements and the onward pavement route before travelling if you cannot manage kerbs or longer walks.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Sixfields Stadium

Before the match

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Use Northampton railway station for Sixfields. It is about two miles from the stadium, so take the 55 bus or a taxi if you do not want the walk. The station has step-free access to every platform, but that does not make the entire route to the ground step-free. If you prefer walking, leave the station towards Black Lion Hill and continue past the Thomas A Becket pub into St James Mill Road.

Families

Carr's Bar (Sixfields Stadium)

Carr’s Bar by the main stand is identified by both a visiting-club briefing and Football Ground Guide as welcoming away supporters. For hot food use the stadium kiosks instead.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Turn right into Harvey Reeves Road, which becomes Edgar Mobbs Way and leads to Sixfields. Visiting-club guides give around 30 minutes, but allow longer if you walk slowly or need to find the away entrance. Check your return train before kick-off, especially for evening games. The station is the straightforward rail option; Long Buckby and Wellingborough are not useful walk-up alternatives.

Rail accessibility
Step-free category A, with lifts to all platforms
Station-to-ground walk

Station to ground & away entrance

Head for the South Stand at Sixfields, where visiting supporters are normally accommodated. From Edgar Mobbs Way, follow the signs around to the away end rather than joining the home turnstile queues. The last part of the route is separate from the walk to the stadium's main entrance, so allow a little time to find it. If you arrive on a supporters’ coach, the recent visiting-club guides put coach drop-off beside the away end.

Check your ticket for your stand, block and turnstile, as names and allocations can change between fixtures. If you are walking from Northampton station, stay on Harvey Reeves Road as it becomes Edgar Mobbs Way; the football ground comes into view ahead. Do not rely on a short map distance to the stadium centre as your exact gate position.

Buses & local travel

Catch the Stagecoach 55 towards Swan Valley from Northampton’s bus interchange or the stop near the railway-station approach road. It stops at Sixfields Football Ground on Edgar Mobbs Way, close to the stadium. Check the live timetable before travelling because services are not frequent enough to assume a quick connection at every kick-off. For the return journey, board the town-centre-bound 55 from the stop outside the Football Ground.

Allow time for the crowd to disperse and check that the next bus actually connects with your train, particularly after a midweek evening match. Older away guides mention several other route numbers, but the 55 has a clearly confirmed stadium stop in current operator information. The former university route 18 was withdrawn in August 2026, so do not plan your journey around it.

Parking

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Use designated matchday parking rather than planning on free residential spaces. April and May 2026 visiting guides described £5 pay-on-arrival parking near Pizza Hut and Nuffield Gym. The club’s north/gravel car park is convenient when open, but check your fixture because access and capacity can change. Duston Mill is the other useful matchday option, on the grass field towards the away end (NN5 5FP in recent away guides).

Parking & park-and-ride

It takes roughly five to ten minutes to reach the ground and has previously taken cash only. Its opening, charge and surface condition can change, so check before relying on it. We could not confirm a specific unrestricted stretch of road in Duston or Upton for a full football visit. The parish council reports matchday pressure on residential streets and the council's legal parking map needs checking bay by bay.

Do not park on verges, across driveways or in signed permit or limited-waiting spaces. If the club car park fills up, check the council-operated Sixfields Reservoir or Claret car parks on Edgar Mobbs Way. The council's 2026/27 matchday rate is £8.50 for each, subject to the car park operating for your fixture. Claret is farther from the turnstiles and has reduced capacity, so allow extra walking time.

Aim to park at least 90 minutes before kick-off, earlier for a large away following. Allow around four hours for the whole visit, including the walk, build-up, match and exit. Leisure-park spaces are not a free football alternative: nearby businesses use camera-enforced limits, sometimes as short as 90 minutes. A Saturday daytime match does not make local streets or retail spaces automatically unrestricted, and parking arrangements can differ for midweek games.

If parking is full, use another signed matchday car park rather than searching residential roads close to kick-off.

Parking verdict
Bookable or pay-on-arrival designated parking is advisable; no named unrestricted residential on-street option has been legally verified
Legal restrictions — Duston / Upton
Street-by-street permit, no-waiting and limited-stay conditions must be checked against current signs and legal traffic orders; no full-match free stretch verified
Matchday availability — Upton residential
Upton Parish Council reported significant matchday parking pressure on residential streets in March 2026; not evidence of parking permission
Arrive by — designated parking
Editorial recommendation: approximately 90 minutes before kick-off, earlier at a sell-out; not an operator promise
More practical details 13
Paid fallback — club north gravel car park
Visiting-club guides of April/May 2026 identify £5 pay-on-arrival car parking near Pizza Hut/Nuffield Gym; card payment mentioned for north car park
Walk — north gravel car park
Short walk to ground; reported as roughly 10 minutes by January 2026 visitor review, not measured to away turnstiles
Paid fallback — Duston Mill
Independent grass-field matchday car park, NN5 5FP in April 2026 Doncaster guide; cash-only reported for that fixture; current charge unknown

Paid fallback — Claret car park
Council-listed Claret car park on Edgar Mobbs Way: £8.50 event-day charge for 2026/27; capacity has been reduced
Booking recommendation
General club parking described by visiting clubs as pay on arrival, not guaranteed; accessible bays must be pre-booked; separate 2026/27 gravel season parking product exists
Supermarket permission/time limit
Football visitor permission for retail and supermarket parking not established; a 2024 away-fan report describes 90-minute retail parking and 40-minute exit queue
Pub parking registration
Greene King representative said Sixfields pub parking was four hours free after registering a vehicle in Sept 2026, but this is not proof that non-customer stadium parking is permitted
Total dwell time
Allow about four hours for a regular football visit; about 60–90 minutes pre-match, 105–120 minutes match and stoppages, return walking and exit delay; longer for cup extra time
After the match
A visiting fan reported a 40-minute car-park exit delay in October 2024; another January 2026 low-attendance visitor reported an easy exit, so experiences vary
Weekend / bank holiday
Council introduced revised charges including weekends and bank holidays from 1 August 2026; avoid assuming an event-day free period
Park-and-ride
No confirmed regular matchday park-and-ride product for Northampton Town home fixtures

Driving & road restrictions

Set your sat-nav to Sixfields Stadium, Upton Way, Northampton NN5 5QA, but follow the signed matchday car-park entrance when you reach the leisure area. Recent visiting-club guides approach Northampton from the M1, usually using junction 15A from the south or junction 16 from the north. Edgar Mobbs Way serves the stadium and several of the parking approaches.

If you want the usual £5 club parking, follow signs to the north/gravel car park near the leisure businesses rather than assuming that the turnstiles and car-park entrance share one address. Duston Mill is a separate privately operated grass-field option, not another entrance to the club's car park. Traffic can bunch up at Sixfields roundabouts after the match.

Check your fixture's instructions and live roadworks before leaving home, particularly if Northampton Saints also have a home event nearby.

Worth knowing

Bristol Rovers at Northampton Town

Look for the Cobblers and Shoe Army names, Dave Bowen's stand and Walter Tull's memorial. The completed East Stand recalls a more recent crisis, while those older names connect Sixfields with Northampton's town and supporter history.

A detail worth noticing

Many photographs, ground guides and mental pictures from the previous decade show a conspicuously incomplete side. That is now outdated.

It gives a visitor a reason to understand Tull as a Northampton player, not only as a name from a national history lesson.

A useful prompt to ask how a club at this scale reached the First Division in 1965.

The grassy rise became 'Jimmy's Hill' during Coventry's 2013/14 Sixfields exile, when boycotting visiting supporters watched from outside.

The old ground's cricket overlap, Hotel End and improvised stands explain why older supporters can sound nostalgic about a venue that was objectively awkward.

Naming a stand after Bowen fixes the club's greatest league ascent into the everyday language of the new ground.

The memorial ensures Sixfields carries a human link back to the pre-war County Ground era.

PLAN THE JOURNEY

Travel & parking

Driving, parking and rail planning for Bristol Rovers supporters travelling to Northampton Town.

Choose a topic for the full journey advice.

Parking

Parking & park-and-ride

Use designated matchday parking rather than planning on free residential spaces. April and May 2026 visiting guides described £5 pay-on-arrival parking near Pizza Hut and Nuffield Gym. The club’s north/gravel car park is convenient when open, but check your fixture because access and capacity can change.

Duston Mill is the other useful matchday option, on the grass field towards the away end (NN5 5FP in recent away guides).

Paid fallback — club north gravel car park
Visiting-club guides of April/May 2026 identify £5 pay-on-arrival car parking near Pizza Hut/Nuffield Gym; card payment mentioned for north car park
Walk — north gravel car park
Short walk to ground; reported as roughly 10 minutes by January 2026 visitor review, not measured to away turnstiles
Paid fallback — Duston Mill
Independent grass-field matchday car park, NN5 5FP in April 2026 Doncaster guide; cash-only reported for that fixture; current charge unknown
Walk — Duston Mill
Older visiting guide describes about five to ten minutes; exact south-stand route not surveyed
Paid fallback — Sixfields Reservoir
Council-listed Sixfields Reservoir car park: £8.50 matchday charge for 2026/27; closed overnight and subject to event-day opening

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Northampton railway station for Sixfields. It is about two miles from the stadium, so take the 55 bus or a taxi if you do not want the walk. The station has step-free access to every platform, but that does not make the entire route to the ground step-free.

If you prefer walking, leave the station towards Black Lion Hill and continue past the Thomas A Becket pub into St James Mill Road.

Coaches

Away coaches

Organised away coaches normally drop supporters beside the South Stand, leaving only a short walk to the visiting turnstiles. Recent visiting-club instructions say there is limited on-site coach parking, so organisers should contact Northampton Town before setting off rather than assume a reserved coach bay.

If the coach cannot remain on site, the visiting-club guidance permits drop-off and collection beside the ground, with the driver arranging off-site parking. The exact collection position may be managed differently for busy matches, so agree it with the driver and stewards before entering.

After full-time, return to the agreed meeting point promptly. Do not assume the coach will wait in the same spot as the initial drop-off if police or stewards change the traffic arrangements.

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Arrange accessible parking through Northampton Town’s ticket office before matchday. The club says most home accessible spaces are already seasonally allocated and remaining home and away spaces are first come, first served by advance booking. A Blue Badge does not guarantee that you can turn up and use a stadium bay.

After the match

After the match

Expect delays leaving the Sixfields car parks after full-time, especially when there is a bigger crowd. One away supporter reported a 40-minute wait to leave the gravel car park, although a later low-attendance visitor got away easily. Do not build a tight motorway or onward-rail connection around a quick exit.

If you came by train, walk back along Edgar Mobbs Way towards Northampton or check the return 55 from the stop outside the Football Ground. Make sure its arrival at Northampton station leaves enough time for your booked train; a bus that serves Sixfields is not necessarily frequent just after the final whistle.

Drivers parked at Duston Mill should return along their original approach rather than cut through residential streets. Leave room for traffic to clear at the roundabouts and obey any stewards directing cars out.

Where to stay

Stay in Northampton town centre if you want a proper evening as well as the football. Around Silver Street, Mare Fair and Swan Street you have a better choice of places to eat and drink, and the railway station remains practical. Sixfields is an out-of-town leisure area, so plan a bus or taxi for the last part of the journey.

For a simple football-focused night, Travelodge Northampton Upton Way sits opposite the stadium. That saves the return journey after the match, but leaves you among retail-park restaurants rather than town-centre nightlife. The hotel advertises limited free parking for guests, shared with a restaurant; it is not public matchday parking.

If you are catching an early train, compare the central hotels near Silver Street and the station. Check the actual room price and late transport for your date rather than assuming a football weekend is the cheapest night.

BEST FORsupporters who want a drink at the stadium · late arrivals who do not want a separate pub stop · visiting fans using the on-site matchday facilities
MATCHDAY INTELCarr's Bar is the most practical ground-side drinking option. A Plymouth Argyle away guide published in April 2026 says the stadium supporters bar welcomes away fans, and the current Football Ground Guide also identifies Carr's Bar as admitting visiting supporters.
WORTH KNOWINGNorthampton's food-and-drink information says hot food is sold through stadium kiosks but not in Carr's Bar itself. The away section also has its own bar after entry and pitchside refreshments. Exact bar opening arrangements can still be fixture-dependent.

BEST FORrail travellers with time · real-ale fans · town-centre hotels
MATCHDAY INTELA proper beer stop for early rail arrivals: CAMRA lists an extensive cask selection and dates its latest venue update to October 2026. It is a town pub, not a near-ground shortcut.
WORTH KNOWINGNo published away-colours or football admission policy. Allow time to retrace towards the station or pick up a bus or taxi for Sixfields.
PUB / BAR

Thomas A Becket

52 St James' Road / St James' Mill Road, Northampton NN5 5HY
Away access: checkFamily friendly
BEST FORstation arrivals · food before walking · groups
MATCHDAY INTELThis is the most logical route-side pub from the station: live Sky/TNT sport, real ale and Pieminister pies or grilled sandwiches. You can rejoin St James’ Mill Road towards Sixfields.
WORTH KNOWINGIts matchday food-vendor partnerships may relate to rugby, not Cobblers fixtures. No confirmed football away-colours policy or priority entry.

52 St James' Road, Northampton, NN5 5HY
Away access: checkFamily friendlyFood available
BEST FORrail arrivals wanting food before heading towards Sixfields · supporters who want televised sport with their pre-match drink · families wanting a pub with a proper food offer
MATCHDAY INTELThomas A Becket is a practical St James-side option rather than a verified football away pub. Its current official site confirms food, live Sky/TNT sport and matchday food-vendor partnerships, while CAMRA marks it family-friendly. A 2025 visiting rugby supporter also reported using it as an away fan without issue.
WORTH KNOWINGThe away-fan evidence is rugby rather than Northampton Town football, so football-match admission and colours remain unverified. Use it as a good route-side food-and-sport option, not as a guaranteed away-designated pub.

The Sevens

BEST FORwatching televised football before the game · a pub stop on the St James side · supporters prioritising sport on screens over a food-led stop
MATCHDAY INTELThe Sevens is current, open and explicitly football-focused, with Craft Union promoting extensive live football coverage. It is also still listed by current ground guides as a pub option near Sixfields, but no strong recent source was found confirming Northampton Town away-fan admission.
WORTH KNOWINGKeep away access and colours as unknown until a fixture-specific or venue source confirms them. The current evidence is strong for operation and sports-pub character, weaker for visiting-football-fan policy.

MATCHDAY INTELCAMRA confirms a surviving St James pub with cask ale, televised sport and a traditional local atmosphere. It works as a route-side alternative if the Thomas A Becket is crowded.

MATCHDAY INTELThe simplest food-and-drink stop by Sixfields: a family-friendly pub with Sky and TNT sport, a play area and a full kitchen. Newport fans reported being served here in September 2026.
WORTH KNOWINGAn older visiting trust called it primarily home-fan with door staff; recent use is encouraging but colours and busy-fixture door policy are not guaranteed.

BEST FORproper meal in town · Friday or Saturday lunch · overnight evening
MATCHDAY INTELFamily-run Vietnamese restaurant Oren Pho offers a change from leisure-park food in a handy town-centre location. Saturday lunch is advertised, making it possible before an afternoon kick-off with an early booking.
WORTH KNOWINGIts Saturday lunch window ends at 2pm and it closes Sundays. Allow enough time to reach Sixfields; it is not a grab-and-go takeaway.

MATCHDAY INTELThis Lower Harding Street café offers a quieter sit-down option before the trip to Sixfields. Its own menu covers breakfast, pizzas and substantial sandwiches including fish-finger or halloumi fillings.
WORTH KNOWINGThe website lists daily opening 10am–4pm but could not be fully opened during checking. Confirm Saturday service before making this a firm meeting point.
PUB / BAR

Sorrentino's Italian Restaurant

64 Gold Street, Northampton NN1 1RS
Away access: check
BEST FORovernight dinner · early Saturday lunch · town hotel groups
MATCHDAY INTELFamily-run Sorrentino’s on Gold Street is a useful proper-meal option if staying in central Northampton. The restaurant advertises Saturday opening from 1pm, better for an evening stay than a rushed pre-match lunch.
WORTH KNOWINGFor a 3pm kick-off, the 1pm Saturday opening leaves little time for a seated meal and the journey to Sixfields. Book for after the match.
