FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW AFC WIMBLEDON TO STEVENAGE

This fixture is still months away, on 27 April. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If AFC Wimbledon are involved in the promotion picture by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

AFC Wimbledon are 16th in League One after 11 league games, with 12 points. Set that against the summer expectation: a side likely to face a survival fight.

AFC Wimbledon come into the current picture with two draws and three defeats across their last five league games, worth two points from a possible fifteen. Stevenage's last five recorded league games brought three wins and two defeats: nine points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

Stevenage are 9th in League One after 10 league games, with 15 points.

The destination is SPORTA Arena in Stevenage. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For most supporters, the station/town-centre side is the most practical base because it keeps Stevenage Station, the leisure park and the stadium within a manageable walk. Holiday Inn Stevenage is the strongest all-round version of that trade-off. Choose the Roebuck if being able to walk back from the ground in about ten minutes matters most, or Hotel Cromwell if you want pubs and restaurants immediately outside the hotel and are happy to use a taxi/bus for the stadium. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

An away day is a chance to follow AFC Wimbledon somewhere different and make a proper day of the football. Check ticket access and the confirmed kick-off before booking; leave enough time either side of the game to enjoy the visit as well as support the team.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Holiday Inn Stevenage by IHG

Holiday Inn Stevenage by IHG

Town centre / St George's Way

The best all-round football-trip choice. It is close enough to walk to the stadium, close enough to the station to avoid a taxi on arrival, and the recent review evidence is stronger than the similarly placed budget alternatives. Its sampled Friday prices were notably good value, although Stevenage's business demand can make some midweek nights much dearer.

  • About a 15-minute walk from the stadium, so there is no need to depend on a post-match taxi.
  • About a nine-minute walk from Stevenage Station, which suits rail-based away supporters.
The match journey

Hotels.com places SPORTA Arena/the former Lamex Stadium about 0.8 miles and 15 minutes on foot from the hotel.

The trade-off

Old Town is a better evening pub/restaurant base, so this is the practical rather than the characterful nightlife choice.

WHY STAY HERE?

Holiday Inn Stevenage by IHG

Town centre / St George's Way

Our view

The best all-round football-trip choice. It is close enough to walk to the stadium, close enough to the station to avoid a taxi on arrival, and the recent review evidence is stronger than the similarly placed budget alternatives. Its sampled Friday prices were notably good value, although Stevenage's business demand can make some midweek nights much dearer.

Why it suits this trip

  • About a 15-minute walk from the stadium, so there is no need to depend on a post-match taxi.
  • About a nine-minute walk from Stevenage Station, which suits rail-based away supporters.
  • Current Booking.com review score was 8.4/10 from more than 1,100 reviews, with strong cleanliness, comfort and staff sub-scores.
  • Recent verified reviews repeatedly describe the rooms as clean, modern and comfortable and the staff as welcoming.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified and sampled Friday rates were competitive for the local market.

Getting to the ground

Hotels.com places SPORTA Arena/the former Lamex Stadium about 0.8 miles and 15 minutes on foot from the hotel.

Pubs and the evening

Convenient for the leisure park, town-centre food and the hotel bar, but Old Town has the stronger concentration of independent pubs and restaurants.

Arriving by train

About a nine-minute walk from Stevenage Station.

The trade-offs

  • Old Town is a better evening pub/restaurant base, so this is the practical rather than the characterful nightlife choice.
  • Official IHG information lists on-site parking at £12 per day.
  • Midweek pricing was volatile in the sample, with some business-demand nights much higher than weekend rates.

Research price context

Sampled around £79–£178 midweek (average about £135) and £79–£84 on the selected Friday nights (average about £81). The unusually cheaper weekend pattern appears consistent with Stevenage's weekday business demand rather than a normal Saturday premium.

Roebuck Inn

Roebuck Inn

Roebuck / London Road, south Stevenage

The clear closest practical hotel to the ground. It is around 0.6 miles from SPORTA Arena/the former Lamex, so supporters can walk back in roughly 10–12 minutes after the match. The compromise is hotel quality and evening location: recent guests often praise the staff, cleanliness and Indian restaurant, but multiple current sources also describe the property as dated and in need of some updating.

  • Around 0.6 miles from the stadium, with third-party route estimates of roughly 11 minutes on foot.
  • Free parking is advertised by the hotel.
The match journey

Expedia places the stadium about 0.6 miles and 11 minutes on foot from the hotel; another current hotel listing gives roughly 9–12 minutes.

The trade-off

It is away from Stevenage Station and Old Town, so it is weaker for rail arrivals and post-match nightlife.

Roebuck Inn

Roebuck / London Road, south Stevenage

Our view

The clear closest practical hotel to the ground. It is around 0.6 miles from SPORTA Arena/the former Lamex, so supporters can walk back in roughly 10–12 minutes after the match. The compromise is hotel quality and evening location: recent guests often praise the staff, cleanliness and Indian restaurant, but multiple current sources also describe the property as dated and in need of some updating.

Why it suits this trip

  • Around 0.6 miles from the stadium, with third-party route estimates of roughly 11 minutes on foot.
  • Free parking is advertised by the hotel.
  • On-site pub and Nirvana Indian restaurant reduce the need to travel elsewhere for food or a drink.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified.
  • Recent reviews consistently praise helpful staff and often describe rooms as clean and comfortable despite the older fabric.

Getting to the ground

Expedia places the stadium about 0.6 miles and 11 minutes on foot from the hotel; another current hotel listing gives roughly 9–12 minutes.

Pubs and the evening

There is an on-site pub and restaurant, but this is not Stevenage's main evening area. Old Town and the station/leisure-park zone offer more choice.

Arriving by train

Stevenage Station is about 1.7 miles on foot by route-planner estimates; bus or taxi is the more sensible option with luggage.

The trade-offs

  • It is away from Stevenage Station and Old Town, so it is weaker for rail arrivals and post-match nightlife.
  • Recent review evidence repeatedly mentions dated décor or tired property condition.
  • No lift is listed by Expedia, so guests with mobility needs should confirm room access before booking.

Research price context

The six normal baseline samples were unusually flat at £106, both midweek and on the selected Friday nights. One checked Saturday home match rose to £142, showing that individual match nights can still spike even when the normal baseline looks stable.

WHY STAY HERE?

Hotel Cromwell Stevenage

Stevenage Old Town High Street

Our view

The best choice if you want the overnight part of the trip to feel like more than a bed near a bypass. It sits directly on Old Town High Street among pubs, cafés and restaurants and has its own bar/brasserie. The hotel itself has the strongest recent Tripadvisor reputation of the three primary picks, but it is materially farther from the stadium and usually costs more than the central IHG options on the sampled weekends.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly on Stevenage Old Town High Street, the town's strongest independent food-and-drink area.
  • Own Rump & Wade brasserie and bar on site.
  • Recent Tripadvisor evidence is strong, with a 4.3/5 rating and 2026 Travellers' Choice recognition.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified and the property remains actively operated under the Hotel Cromwell name.
  • Free parking is advertised by the hotel.

Getting to the ground

Third-party listings place the hotel roughly 2.3–2.8 miles from the stadium depending route/method. Treat this as a taxi/bus hotel for matchday rather than a practical stadium walk.

Pubs and the evening

The hotel is on the High Street itself, surrounded by independent pubs, cafés and restaurants; current local-authority and tourism material both describe Old Town as a day-and-night food/drink area.

Arriving by train

About a 16-minute walk from Stevenage Station according to current hotel-platform mapping; the hotel itself describes the station as about one mile away.

The trade-offs

  • It is not a sensible walk-to-the-ground choice after an evening match; plan on a taxi or bus.
  • Roughly a 16-minute walk from Stevenage Station, so it is less convenient than the station/town-centre hotels for rail arrivals.
  • The official room information says the hotel does not have a lift.
  • Sampled weekend pricing was typically above the Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

Research price context

Sampled around £120–£128 midweek (average about £123) and £123–£131 on the selected Friday nights (average about £128). Unlike the central IHG hotels, Cromwell's normal sample was comparatively steady, with only a small weekend premium.

YOUR AWAY DAY · SPORTA Arena

The ground

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

A compact lower-league ground assembled in layers: old-site history, a surviving standing East Terrace, a modern supporter-funded North Stand and an away end behind the goal. Its sponsored name has changed, but 'Broadhall Way' remains the heritage anchor.

Views from the away section

The South Stand is a proper modern behind-goal away end with a clear, unobstructed view across the pitch. Legroom is good and the stand is close enough to the playing surface that the near goal feels immediate rather than distant.

Why the ground matters

Broadhall Way is not merely where Stevenage play; it is part of the club's creation, exclusion and recovery stories. Being kept out in the 1970s, failing Football League criteria in 1996 and later rebuilding the ground with supporter money all happened here.

East Terrace

Standing home section and the club-described centre of the loudest singing and drumming.

North Stand

Supporter interpretation

Modern stand whose funding story includes more than 200 supporter investors and roughly £600,000 raised through the mini-bond.

South Stand

Usual away-support section behind one goal.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

YOUR AWAY DAY · SPORTA Arena

Atmosphere & acoustics

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

The low roof is the key feature for visiting noise: it sits close above the South Stand and helps a compact away following sound bigger than the raw attendance. Being close to the pitch also gives celebrations and chants a more immediate feel.

Red-and-white and Boro-name chants

The most identity-relevant feature is not a unique lyric but the continued use of 'Boro' and red-and-white language after the official rebrand.

East Terrace vocal support

Standing, singing and drumming on the East Terrace remain the most recognisable in-ground supporter behaviour.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Food & drink

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

Stevenage play at SPORTA Arena on Broadhall Way, the ground many away guides still call the Lamex. Visiting supporters usually enter the South Stand; the club-run Broadhall Bar beside that end is the nearest documented away-welcoming pint, though its opening arrangements can change by fixture. Our Mutual Friend is the best-supported pub a short walk away, with the Roebuck an option for a later pint or sit-down Indian meal.

Food and drink around the ground

Trains arrive at Stevenage, about 20 minutes’ walk from the stadium; meet around the New Town square or Old Post Office before following the pedestrian route and underpasses. Don't cross the A602 at road level. Day’s Fish & Chips on Broadwater Crescent works for an early Saturday lunch, but closes at 2pm; JJ’s Plaice and central cafés suit arrivals eating before the walk.

Old Town has better independent meals and traditional pubs for overnight visitors, but requires a deliberate detour. The stadium kiosks provide a fallback, and mobile food traders should only be expected when that fixture's guide confirms them.

Broadhall Bar / Broadhall Suite

The closest proper pre-match drink for away supporters: Stevenage’s September 2026 guide explicitly welcomed visitors to the Broadhall Bar. Handy if you are arriving by coach or want to be at the ground early.

Four wheelchair spaces are provided for visiting supporters in the South Stand; email dslo@stevenagefc.com or call 01438 223223 to discuss requirements.

Accessible journeys

The club's access statement describes four dedicated on-site accessible bays and other spaces requiring advance registration, but a September 2026 visiting-club notice says accessible matchday parking was unavailable. Do not assume you have a stadium bay until the club confirms it. Fairlands Valley offers a reported step-free underpass, although the walk may still be challenging.

Stevenage railway station is classed as step-free B1, but an October 2026 lift outage means individual platform access should be checked. The club also notes a long distance between South Stand wheelchair places and the accessible toilet.

Planning your arrival

Be at the stadium perimeter before the busiest turnstile period.

Rail, Underground & tram

Check the return train before an evening kick-off, as bus connections and rail services may be less convenient after the final whistle. National Rail lists step-free category B1 access, but Great Northern reported a lift outage affecting platforms 1 and 2 from 8 October 2026. If you need step-free travel, check the latest assistance arrangements before setting off.

Buses & local travel

From Stevenage Interchange, opposite the railway station, the Arriva SB5 is a useful alternative to walking. A separate football shuttle has been described in older visiting guides, but its 2026/27 operation, fare and return boarding point were not confirmed.

Do not plan your journey around that shuttle without checking with the club. After the match, allow for bus queues and a possible wait for the next service. The town-centre walk is a dependable backup if your mobility and onward train connection allow it.

Parking

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

Free parking is normally the sensible choice at Stevenage, so you usually need not book. Head for the authorised Fairlands Valley Showground car park opposite the SPORTA Arena, rather than hunting for residential parking. The stadium itself has no general supporter spaces. The club and visiting teams describe around 500 free spaces at Fairlands Valley, with roughly five minutes on foot to the ground.

Parking & park-and-ride

Use the signed underpass beneath the A602, then walk towards the South Stand on Monkswood Way. The spaces are not reserved, so aim to arrive around 75–90 minutes before kick-off, earlier for a large following. We could not confirm any particular nearby residential street as unrestricted for a whole match. Council orders and permit schemes vary by street, while the club asks supporters not to park in residential areas.

Do not treat an unsigned-looking space or a grass verge as permission. If Fairlands Valley is closed or full, Westgate multi-storey in the town centre is a reliable paid alternative. Its published daytime tariff is £6 for up to five hours Monday to Saturday, or £2.50 on Sundays; allow around 20–30 minutes to walk. St George's Way multi-storey offers similar charges, but check its refurbishment restrictions.

Never use Roaring Meg or another retail car park for the match. Football guidance cites matchday limits of 90 minutes or two hours, with no general football-parking permission. Allow around four hours for the whole visit, including both walks, pre-match time and delays. Fairlands Valley was closed for a separate private event at an August 2026 fixture, so check the latest club notice before setting off.

Its single exit can also cause queues after full-time; wait patiently or use the town-centre fallback on busy dates.

Parking verdict
Free official supporter parking is normally realistic; booking is not necessary, but confirm fixture-specific access and keep a paid fallback
Free option — Fairlands Valley Showground
Normally free supporter car park opposite stadium; around 500 spaces, not pre-bookable or guaranteed
Walk — Fairlands Valley
About five minutes to stadium using signed A602 underpass; follow South Stand signs for away entrance

Booking recommendation
Do not book for Fairlands Valley; use a lawful town-centre car park if it is closed or full, or book a genuinely authorised private space if essential
Supermarket permission/time limit — Roaring Meg
Not suitable for supporters: club 2025/26 charter cites two-hour matchday limit, while other guides cite 90 minutes; confirm signs for shopping use only
Supermarket permission/time limit — other nearby retailers
No verified stadium-visitor permission or suitable whole-match stay: do not use nearby customer-only retail parks
Total dwell time
Allow around four hours for a typical league match visit: arrival buffer, 90 minutes plus half-time/stoppages, both walks and exit delays; longer for cup extra time
After the match
Fairlands Valley has a single exit, with possible bottleneck; town-centre car parks avoid the immediate stadium exit but require longer walk

Driving & road restrictions

For the ground, use Broadhall Way, Stevenage, SG2 8RH and follow signs from junction 7 of the A1(M) along the A602. Comfort & weather

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

The forecast loads when you open this topic. Comfort and shelter guidance is below.

For a relatively small ground, the visitor stand is comfortable: good legroom, covered seating, clear sightlines and decent refreshments/facilities. It feels much more modern than some of the older parts of the Lamex.

Shelter and exposure

Supporter observation

Current supporter-community guidance describes the away South Stand as covered with its own bar, refreshments and toilets.

Worth knowing

AFC Wimbledon at Stevenage

The East Terrace, newer stands and away South Stand put different Stevenage eras close together. The sponsored name changed in 2026, while Broadhall Way remains the familiar name attached to the ground's history.

Matchday features

Four away wheelchair places. Sensory room. Audio commentary. Close-pitch feel

Bags and entry

Check current stadium policy.

Around the ground

The East Terrace is not decorative heritage; it is still where the club directs supporters who want the most vocal standing experience.

Supporter interpretation

The North Stand looks like ordinary modern EFL infrastructure until you know supporters helped finance it.

The words Lamex, SPORTA Arena and Broadhall Way may all appear in conversation or older material; they refer to the same home, with different naming eras.

A detail worth noticing

The contrast between the standing East Terrace and later all-seater construction shows how the ground grew with the club rather than arriving as one finished modern stadium.

The current SPORTA Arena branding is very new; many supporters, sources and older signs/material still refer to The Lamex or simply Broadhall Way.

The ground was built in 1960, partly on a former sewage-works site, and initially reused structures from the old London Road ground.

The 1976 trench episode is inseparable from the modern club's origin story.

Supporter interpretation

The 1996 failure to meet Football League ground requirements turned stadium development into a club-wide historical issue rather than a cosmetic one.

Matchday arrangements can change. Check current club guidance and your ticket before travelling.

Supporter insights combine the site's existing official guidance, supporter-oriented research and fixture checks.

Away coaches

If you are using an official away supporters' coach, expect drop-off near the South Stand on Monkswood Way, off the A602. Recent visiting-club guidance places both drop-off and collection immediately outside the away end, avoiding a long walk from the town centre.

Coaches may leave the roadside after dropping off and return for collection. Your organiser should confirm the exact meeting position and time for your fixture, especially if police or stewards change the traffic plan.

For independent minibuses or privately arranged coaches, contact Stevenage before travelling rather than assuming they can remain parked beside the ground.

Contact Stevenage's Disabled Supporter Liaison Officer before travelling if you need a wheelchair position, help with the approach or an accessible parking arrangement. Four wheelchair spaces are provided for visiting supporters in the South Stand; email dslo@stevenagefc.com or call 01438 223223 to discuss requirements.

After the match

After the match

If you parked at Fairlands Valley, return through the pedestrian underpass and allow time to leave the car park. It has a single vehicle exit, and supporter reports describe a bottleneck when much of the crowd departs together.

If getting away quickly matters more than the short walk, a paid town-centre car park gives you a different starting point, but adds a longer walk back to the car. Check your outward road direction before choosing where to park.

If travelling by train, allow around half an hour to walk back to Stevenage station rather than making a tight connection. Away coaches normally return to collect by the South Stand; use the collection point agreed with your own organiser.

Where to stay

If you need to stay overnight, choose Stevenage town centre near the railway station rather than the stadium's retail-park area. It makes arrival and the onward journey easier, with the ground a manageable walk or local bus ride away.

Holiday Inn Express Stevenage advertises a location around six minutes on foot from the station; Holiday Inn Stevenage is on St George's Way near the town centre. Both are practical examples rather than reasons to stay overnight for an ordinary afternoon match.

Drivers wanting a hotel car park should check the property's guest conditions, charges and registration process. Do not assume a nearby retailer or hotel will allow non-guest matchday parking.

BEST FORproper meal · overnight
MATCHDAY INTELAn old coaching inn with a pub and an Indian restaurant, useful for a proper meal or anyone staying locally. Away supporters have been welcomed on previous visits.

BEST FORpre-match · on-site fallback
MATCHDAY INTELA club-run bar open to both home and away fans in January 2026, particularly useful when your group wants televised pre-match build-up without heading into town.
