FIXTURE STORY

FOLLOW AFC BOURNEMOUTH TO CRYSTAL PALACE

This fixture is still months away, on 30 December. Today's table is useful background, but it is not a prediction of the positions either side will hold on matchday. If AFC Bournemouth are involved in the chase for a higher league finish by then, this could be an away result with real weight behind it.

AFC Bournemouth are 15th in the Premier League after 7 league games, with 6 points. Before the season, they were seen as a side with survival to secure.

Crystal Palace are 14th in the Premier League after 7 league games, with 7 points. The pre-season outlook had them down as a side with survival to secure.

AFC Bournemouth's last five recorded league games brought one win, two draws and two defeats: five points from a possible fifteen. Those are results available now; the form heading into this fixture may be very different.

The destination is Selhurst Park in London. Work back from kick-off when deciding whether this is a day trip or a night away. For the best all-round football trip, base yourself around central Croydon or East Croydon. You have a much deeper hotel market, late food and drink, and regular rail/bus links back from the Selhurst/Norwood Junction side. Crystal Palace itself is the more characterful evening base, but the club explicitly warns that Crystal Palace station is around two miles from the ground and is not the station to use for the match. Check the matchday travel arrangements again nearer the fixture.

Make the football the reason to go and give yourself enough time to enjoy it. Check the confirmed kick-off and ticket arrangements before committing to travel or a hotel, then choose the plan that lets you support AFC Bournemouth from the away end without rushing the whole day.

Table and form checked 22 October.

Holiday Inn Express London - Croydon by IHG

Holiday Inn Express London - Croydon by IHG

Central Croydon

The strongest all-round recommendation for a Selhurst Park overnight. It is not the nearest hotel on a ruler, but it is central enough for Croydon food and drink, well connected back towards the ground, recently refurbished, and current review evidence is notably strong. The sampled rates were also steadier and cheaper than Hampton and Westow House.

  • Central Croydon gives supporters more late food and drink than the streets immediately around Selhurst Park.
  • Direct buses serve the stadium area and West Croydon-Norwood Junction rail is another workable route.
The match journey

Rome2Rio gives a roughly 2.2-mile walking route and about 41 minutes. More practical options include a direct bus in roughly 20-25 minutes door-to-door or rail from West Croydon to Norwood Junction.

The trade-off

It is about a 41-minute walk to Selhurst Park, so most supporters will prefer bus, rail or a short taxi.

Holiday Inn Express London - Croydon by IHG

Central Croydon

Our view

The strongest all-round recommendation for a Selhurst Park overnight. It is not the nearest hotel on a ruler, but it is central enough for Croydon food and drink, well connected back towards the ground, recently refurbished, and current review evidence is notably strong. The sampled rates were also steadier and cheaper than Hampton and Westow House.

Why it suits this trip

  • Central Croydon gives supporters more late food and drink than the streets immediately around Selhurst Park.
  • Direct buses serve the stadium area and West Croydon-Norwood Junction rail is another workable route.
  • IHG states breakfast is included; that improves the real overnight value rather than just the headline room rate.
  • Recent 2026 review evidence repeatedly praises cleanliness, staff and breakfast.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified during this research.

Getting to the ground

Rome2Rio gives a roughly 2.2-mile walking route and about 41 minutes. More practical options include a direct bus in roughly 20-25 minutes door-to-door or rail from West Croydon to Norwood Junction.

Pubs and the evening

Croydon has a broader late food-and-drink offer than the stadium streets. BOXPARK is open until 1am Thursday-Saturday and runs food, drinks, sport and events.

Arriving by train

West Croydon gives a direct rail option to Norwood Junction; East Croydon is also a useful hub and Crystal Palace FC lists regular services from East Croydon to Selhurst and Norwood Junction.

The trade-offs

  • It is about a 41-minute walk to Selhurst Park, so most supporters will prefer bus, rail or a short taxi.
  • The immediate rear/arrival environment is more functional than attractive.
  • One 2026 Tripadvisor review raised a serious complaint about payment handling and alleged disclosure of another guest's personal information; this appears isolated rather than a recurring review theme, but it is worth retaining in the audit trail.

Research price context

Sampled at about £84-£97 midweek and £80-£101 on representative Fridays, averaging roughly £91 in both groups. There was no meaningful weekend premium in this sample.

Closest to the groundPut the stadium journey first
Hampton by Hilton London Croydon

Hampton by Hilton London Croydon

East Croydon

This is the closest practical hotel we would put MatchdayHotels' name next to. It is around a 30-minute walk from Selhurst Park, but the better reason to choose it is East Croydon: a direct train to Norwood Junction takes only a few minutes, with frequent buses as another fallback. It also has materially stronger current reputation evidence than some properties that are physically nearer.

  • Around a 30-minute walk to the stadium if trains or buses are crowded.
  • Very close to East Croydon station, with direct rail to Norwood Junction.
The match journey

Rome2Rio gives a roughly 1.6-mile / 30-minute walk. The more comfortable option is the direct East Croydon-Norwood Junction train (about 4 minutes on the train itself), then the club's 10-15 minute walk to Selhurst Park.

The trade-off

Rooms are often described as compact.

East Croydon

Our view

This is the closest practical hotel we would put MatchdayHotels' name next to. It is around a 30-minute walk from Selhurst Park, but the better reason to choose it is East Croydon: a direct train to Norwood Junction takes only a few minutes, with frequent buses as another fallback. It also has materially stronger current reputation evidence than some properties that are physically nearer.

Why it suits this trip

  • Around a 30-minute walk to the stadium if trains or buses are crowded.
  • Very close to East Croydon station, with direct rail to Norwood Junction.
  • Current Booking.com score was 8.8 with more than 5,000 reviews in the live search.
  • Hilton includes hot breakfast and Wi-Fi.
  • Recent reviews consistently praise staff, cleanliness and transport convenience.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified.

Getting to the ground

Rome2Rio gives a roughly 1.6-mile / 30-minute walk. The more comfortable option is the direct East Croydon-Norwood Junction train (about 4 minutes on the train itself), then the club's 10-15 minute walk to Selhurst Park.

Pubs and the evening

BOXPARK and East Croydon restaurants/bars give a solid post-match option, although the Crystal Palace Triangle has more neighbourhood character.

Arriving by train

Hilton states the hotel is within 10 minutes' walk of East and West Croydon stations. Crystal Palace FC confirms regular services from East Croydon towards Selhurst/Norwood Junction.

The trade-offs

  • Rooms are often described as compact.
  • Some recent reviewers mention temperature-control or shower-pressure issues.
  • It can cost more than Holiday Inn Express without being dramatically better for a one-night football stay.

Research price context

Sampled at about £118-£120 midweek and £89-£128 on representative Fridays. The weekend sample averaged lower than midweek, so there was no evidence of a normal weekend premium in these checks.

Westow House - London Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace Triangle

The best choice when the overnight is as much about the evening as the bed. You are staying directly in the Crystal Palace Triangle, above a busy pub, with independent restaurants and bars outside the door. The rooms review well, but the football logistics are less clean than East Croydon and the weekend/matchday price premium is real.

  • Directly in the Crystal Palace Triangle, the area's strongest independent food-and-drink cluster.
  • The hotel is part of a popular pub with food and drinks downstairs.
The match journey

Booking.com's Selhurst Park hotel page places Westow House about 1.5 miles from the stadium, but that is not a verified walking-route distance. Crystal Palace FC specifically advises against using Crystal Palace station for the ground because it is around two miles away.

The trade-off

Crystal Palace station is not the recommended station for Selhurst Park; the club says it is about two miles from the ground.

Why it suits this trip

  • Directly in the Crystal Palace Triangle, the area's strongest independent food-and-drink cluster.
  • The hotel is part of a popular pub with food and drinks downstairs.
  • Recent room reviews praise comfort, cleanliness and quiet despite the pub below.
  • Booking.com coverage was verified.
  • A distinctive local stay rather than a generic chain hotel.

Getting to the ground

Booking.com's Selhurst Park hotel page places Westow House about 1.5 miles from the stadium, but that is not a verified walking-route distance. Crystal Palace FC specifically advises against using Crystal Palace station for the ground because it is around two miles away. Treat Westow House as a nightlife-first base and plan bus/taxi or a longer walk.

Pubs and the evening

Westow House is on Westow Hill inside the Triangle. A current local food guide describes Westow Hill, Westow Street and Church Road as the main restaurant/pub cluster, and CAMRA lists Westow House itself as a pub with food, live music and accommodation.

Arriving by train

Both are useful for the area, but neither is the preferred stadium station. For the match, Selhurst, Thornton Heath and Norwood Junction are the club's recommended rail approaches.

The trade-offs

  • Crystal Palace station is not the recommended station for Selhurst Park; the club says it is about two miles from the ground.
  • The return from the match is better treated as a bus/taxi or a longer walk rather than a simple station-to-hotel hop.
  • Sampled weekend prices were about 30% above midweek.
  • There is no lift, which is a genuine accessibility limitation.

Research price context

Sampled at about £115-£118 midweek and £145-£158 on representative Friday nights, averaging about £151 at weekends. That is roughly a 30% weekend premium.

All the key information for AFC Bournemouth supporters heading to Selhurst Park — from the ground and atmosphere to food, access, parking and matchday practicalities.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Selhurst Park

The ground

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

Traditional, compressed and asymmetrical. The Holmesdale is modern by Selhurst standards and supplies the visual home end; the Arthur Wait has old supporting pillars and a low roof; the Main Stand still contains the core of the 1924 grandstand; Whitehorse Lane completes a ground that has evolved piecemeal rather than through one rebuild.

Recorded capacity
26,255

Views from the away section

Arthur Wait away seats can be affected by supporting pillars; obstruction risk is seat-specific.

Supporter observation

Brighton supporter discussions repeatedly focus on choosing rows around Selhurst Park's support pillars, so individual seat position can make a noticeable difference to the away view.

Why the ground matters

Selhurst Park sits tightly among houses, with different generations of stands and surviving elements of Archibald Leitch's 1924 design. Its close quarters help noise carry sharply between sections and give Palace home matches their familiar setting.

Main Stand

Its core dates from the 1924 Archibald Leitch ground. It has been altered repeatedly, but remains the most direct surviving architectural link to Selhurst's opening.

Arthur Wait Stand

Built for the club's first top-flight era around 1969. It now contains the visiting section; supporting pillars and the roof can restrict views from the rear.

Holmesdale Road Stand

The two-tier home end opened in the 1990s and is the focal point of modern Palace singing and tifo culture.

Whitehorse Lane

The end is visually distinctive because a Sainsbury's store and club facilities are integrated into the tight stadium footprint.

Atmosphere & acoustics

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

The Holmesdale end is one of the more consistently vocal home ends and can create a strong atmosphere.

Songs and matchday traditions

Flags, banners, drums and tifos turn the lower Holmesdale into the visible centre of Palace support.

Kayla's pre-match flights from 2010-2020 made the Eagles nickname literal; Phoenix has continued the live-mascot link since 2024, although her appearances and flying role can evolve with training and welfare.

A cross-generational singalong that predates the modern Eagles branding and therefore links different Palace eras.

Food & drink

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

Selhurst Park is easiest if you decide your station before you decide your pint. Groups wanting a local away-friendly rendezvous should favour Thornton Heath: The Prince George is the clearest pre-match base, with the Railway Telegraph beside the station as a second option, though door policy can change by fixture and neither publishes a blanket away-colours guarantee.

Food and drink around the ground

Norwood Junction is excellent from London Bridge but its nearby pubs are heavily used by Palace supporters, so do not assume colours will be welcome. For food, Tasty Jerk on Whitehorse Lane is the local matchday institution; Mamma Dough gives Norwood Junction arrivals a proper sit-down alternative. Recent visiting-supporter guidance also confirms an Away Fanzone two hours before kick-off, while the visiting concourse is cashless.

Palace's current stadium guide says its £7 early-bird food-and-beer offer does not apply in visiting concourses. Road closures, segregation and local pub admission make fixture-specific checking worthwhile.

Accessibility

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

Contact Palace's Disability Liaison Officer before travelling if you need an away wheelchair space, assisted entry or accessible parking. There is a raised visiting wheelchair platform in the Arthur Wait Stand, with an accessible entrance and nearby toilets. The club identifies a small number of Blue Badge spaces at Sainsbury's beside the stadium, allocated first come, first served.

Accessible journeys

For rail travel, Selhurst is rated step-free to all platforms, while Norwood Junction has only partial step-free access. Thornton Heath is also normally step-free, but a lift fault was shown when checked, so verify before choosing it. Ask Palace about the appropriate taxi approach and any parking or drop-off restrictions for your particular fixture.

Station to ground & away entrance

Go to the Arthur Wait Stand on Park Road for the away turnstiles. The visiting section is at the Whitehorse Lane end of that stand, so follow signs and your ticket's entrance details instead of queuing with home supporters. The visiting ticket collection point is by Entrance 4, at the Park Road and Holmesdale Road corner. From Norwood Junction, follow Station Road and Selhurst Road before turning into Park Road. From Selhurst, walk along Selhurst Road into Park Road.

If you arrive at Thornton Heath, use High Street and Whitehorse Lane, then turn towards Park Road. Allow time for stewarded pedestrian routes around the stadium.

Buses & local travel

Use the train and walk if you can. Selhurst Park has no Underground station at its gates, and the three nearby railway stations make the final leg simpler than waiting for a bus in football traffic. TfL buses remain useful when travelling across Croydon rather than arriving at a mainline station. The Selhurst Road/Park Road stop is served by routes 75, 130, 157 and 410. Routes 130 and 468 also serve the stadium vicinity on different roads.

Check TfL for the correct direction and temporary stop changes; matchday road closures can interrupt the closest boarding points after full-time.

Parking

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

Do not plan to find free street parking next to Selhurst Park. The club provides no general stadium parking, and the streets around the ground have permit bays, time limits and matchday traffic closures. If you need to drive to within walking distance, booking an authorised private driveway is the more reliable plan. For Sunday fixtures, first consider Clifford Road car park in South Norwood, SE25 5JH, or Garnet Road in Thornton Heath, CR7 8RD.

Parking & park-and-ride

Croydon Council confirms both are free on Sundays and open 24 hours. They have just 26 and 28 standard spaces respectively, so arrive early and keep another option ready. We could not confirm a named residential street with unrestricted all-match parking. The South Norwood and Thornton Heath permit-zone maps cover several roads that visitors may otherwise try. Even outside a shaded zone, yellow lines, signed bays and neighbourhood access restrictions still matter.

Do not confuse a free Sunday council car park with permission to park on surrounding streets. On other days, Clifford Road and Garnet Road are charged during the council's Monday–Saturday daytime hours, using vehicle-emissions-based tariffs. Alternatively, book a private driveway through JustPark or a comparable authorised operator, checking access and departure rules.

If nearby parking is sold out, Ruskin Square at East Croydon is open 24 hours: park there, then take a train towards Selhurst or Norwood Junction. Allow at least four hours for parking, the two walks, arrival, the match and dispersal. Sainsbury's customer bays beside the ground are not an approved matchday alternative: store-specific limits need checking and the club reserves nearby special spaces for eligible Blue Badge holders.

For evening games or cup ties, cover the possibility of a late finish and avoid any driveway inside the road-closure zone.

Driving & road restrictions

Set your sat-nav to Selhurst Park, SE25 6PU, only to identify the area. If you are driving, choose and book an authorised space outside the immediate closure zone before setting off. From the M25 south of London, Palace directs drivers via Junction 7, the A23 through Croydon and Brigstock Road towards Whitehorse Lane. Do not use Park Road or Holmesdale Road as a dependable final approach on matchday.

Palace warns that surrounding roads close before kick-off and reopen only after the crowd has cleared. Croydon also operates signed permit zones and camera-enforced neighbourhood traffic filters, so follow the permitted route supplied with your booked space.

YOUR AWAY DAY · Selhurst Park

Worth knowing

AFC Bournemouth at Crystal Palace

For an away supporter, Selhurst is interesting because the inconveniences and the atmosphere come from the same thing: it is an old, tight ground shaped by layers of rebuilding rather than a modern bowl. Visiting fans are placed in the Arthur Wait Stand and face a matchday environment in which the Holmesdale's noise and choreography are difficult to ignore.

Matchday features

Holmesdale atmosphere. Traditional residential setting. Pillar-related restricted-view risk

Parking & park-and-ride

Do not plan to find free street parking next to Selhurst Park. The club provides no general stadium parking, and the streets around the ground have permit bays, time limits and matchday traffic closures. If you need to drive to within walking distance, booking an authorised private driveway is the more reliable plan.

For Sunday fixtures, first consider Clifford Road car park in South Norwood, SE25 5JH, or Garnet Road in Thornton Heath, CR7 8RD.

Parking verdict

Trains

Rail, Underground & tram

Use Norwood Junction for trains from London Bridge or the London Overground, then walk to the Park Road away entrance. Selhurst station is equally useful when arriving from Victoria. Both put you within a manageable walk of Selhurst Park without needing a Tube journey right to the ground.

Thornton Heath is another good arrival point, especially if you want to meet near its High Street before the match. Check the return service to the London terminus you actually need. Despite its name, Crystal Palace station is about two miles from Selhurst Park and is not the station to choose for the game.

Recommended station
Norwood Junction for London Bridge/Overground arrivals; follow Station Road, Selhurst Road and Park Road
Alternative station
Selhurst for London Victoria arrivals; walk along Selhurst Road and Park Road to the visiting end
Third station
Thornton Heath; follow Brigstock Road, High Street and Whitehorse Lane towards the ground
Approximate walks
Visiting guide places Selhurst, Thornton Heath and Norwood Junction roughly 10–15 minutes from the ground; visiting club reports 13/15/19 minutes to stadium, not necessarily away ticket gate
Do not use

Selhurst station step-free

Coaches

Away coaches

Use your visiting club's organised coach instructions rather than driving a private coach straight to the turnstiles. Older travelling-supporter reports describe coaches arriving near the Arthur Wait away side on Park Road, but they do not establish an official stopping or parking bay for your fixture.

Before you travel, ask the coach organiser where you will be set down and collected, and how far the walk is to the Park Road entrance. Expect traffic controls to affect the departure: Palace closes nearby roads around matches. Keep the driver's number handy in case stewards change the return meeting point.

Coach journey recommendation
Follow fixture-specific instructions provided by visiting-club coach operator
Historic coach arrivals
Older visiting supporter reports describe coaches parked near or opposite Park Road away turnstiles; not verified for 2026 fixtures
Coach exit caution

Buses

Accessibility

Accessible journeys

Contact Palace's Disability Liaison Officer before travelling if you need an away wheelchair space, assisted entry or accessible parking. There is a raised visiting wheelchair platform in the Arthur Wait Stand, with an accessible entrance and nearby toilets. The club identifies a small number of Blue Badge spaces at Sainsbury's beside the stadium, allocated first come, first served.

After the match

After the match

Walk back to the same railway station you used before the match, unless your return ticket needs a different route. Norwood Junction is practical for London Bridge and Overground connections, while Selhurst and Thornton Heath serve other Southern journeys. Give yourself a generous margin for leaving the Arthur Wait Stand and joining a busy train.

If driving, aim to collect a car outside the immediate Selhurst road-closure area rather than expecting to leave a driveway beside the ground promptly. Palace warns that nearby roads may stay closed for approximately an hour after the whistle. Check any coach collection point with your organiser, and leave extra time for evening games or cup extra time.

Post-match rail choice
Norwood Junction for London Bridge/Overground; Selhurst/Thornton Heath for appropriate Southern services
Post-match road closures

Where to stay

Stay near East Croydon if you want a hotel with easy rail access to Selhurst Park and convenient onward journeys after the match. You can take a local Southern service towards Selhurst or Norwood Junction, then walk to the away entrance. It is a stronger practical base than hunting for a room in the mostly residential streets surrounding the ground.

Choose the Crystal Palace Triangle around Westow Hill and Church Road if your priority is an evening of independent pubs, cafés and restaurants. It has more character, but do not mistake Crystal Palace station for Selhurst Park's nearest stop. Thornton Heath and South Norwood are useful for a shorter local football visit, although they offer fewer straightforward hotel choices.

Recommended hotel area
East Croydon: transport-led overnight base with rail services to Selhurst/Norwood Junction
Alternative hotel area
Crystal Palace Triangle around Westow Hill and Church Road for restaurants and pubs, but not the closest stadium rail station
Near-ground trade-off
Selhurst Park sits in a residential district with three rail stations in walkable reach, but not a major stadium hotel cluster
