Use Middlesbrough railway station for the Riverside. It is about a 20-minute walk to the ground, with the route through Bridge Street East and Windward Way.
Plan a stay at Middlesbrough ↗From Middlesbrough station, leave by Bridge Street West, turn right and cross Albert Road. Follow Bridge Street East to Windward Way, then continue beneath the road bridge towards the Riverside. It is a straightforward signed walk, although the final approach gets busy before kick-off. Visiting supporters normally enter the East Stand at the south-east corner, through turnstiles 53–61. Keep walking around the ground to that entrance rather than joining the nearest home queue. Check your match ticket for any fixture-specific entrance instruction and allow time for searches.
Football directions and parking ↗If you came by train, return to Middlesbrough station along Windward Way and Bridge Street East. Leave time for crowds to clear around the East Stand before crossing back through the town centre. Check your last connection before kick-off rather than assuming you can catch the first service after full-time. Drivers using a stadium car park should expect controlled vehicle exits after the final whistle. Club guidance allows for closures lasting up to about 30 minutes, and supporter accounts describe longer queues. If a quick departure matters, walking back to a town-centre car park may suit you better, although traffic can still build on the A66.
Football directions and parking ↗If you need to stay overnight, choose central Middlesbrough near the railway station. You can reach the Riverside on foot and get back to your hotel without arranging a taxi through the immediate post-match closures.

Compare the stay areas →Use Middlesbrough railway station for the Riverside. It is about a 20-minute walk to the ground, with the route through Bridge Street East and Windward Way. Allow extra time to reach the away turnstiles on the far side of the stadium.
Services connect Middlesbrough with York, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle, with wider journeys often changing at Darlington. Check your last return train before booking an evening match, especially if you need a connection after full-time.
South Bank is a rail alternative on the wider network, but it is not the recommended station for the ground. Its onward walking journey is less straightforward, so do not switch to it simply because it appears nearby on a map.

For most away fans, the simplest local journey is to walk from Middlesbrough station. There is no regular bus serving the stadium entrance, so do not plan on catching a bus directly to the away end.
If you arrive at Middlesbrough bus station, allow roughly 25 minutes on foot. Head via Newport Road and Linthorpe Road to the railway underpass, then join Bridge Street East and Windward Way. Alternatively, take a taxi from the bus station or the Bridge Street side of the railway station, but allow for matchday road closures.
Some normal bus services stop in North Ormesby, with a further walk to the Riverside. Check the operator’s route and return stop for your date; a dedicated matchday shuttle has not been verified.
If you are travelling on your club’s official coach, follow its joining and departure instructions rather than setting off for a town-centre car park. Middlesbrough’s visiting-coach guidance places coaches in stadium Car Park D, approached from The Leeway, close to the away turnstiles. Stewards direct vehicles on arrival.
The precise drop-off, collection arrangements and any police rendezvous are fixture-dependent, particularly for higher-risk matches. Check them with your supporters’ travel organiser before departure, and return to the coach promptly after full-time. Older published coach-parking prices should not be treated as the current charge.
Contact Middlesbrough FC before travelling if you need an accessible parking space or shorter drop-off. The club offers a limited number of visiting-supporter spaces and says stadium parking must be pre-booked on 01642 929421. Ask about a drop-off pass for The Halyard if the full walk is difficult.
Middlesbrough station has step-free access to both platforms and lifts. The club has accessible visitor seating in the East Stand and an entrance near the visiting turnstiles; arrangements depend on your ticket and access needs. Tell your visiting club about wheelchair seating when purchasing the ticket.
Do not rely on an ordinary Blue Badge to bypass stadium road closures. Confirm the vehicle access route, parking bay, entrance and any assistance with Middlesbrough FC before the match.

If you need to stay overnight, choose central Middlesbrough near the railway station. You can reach the Riverside on foot and get back to your hotel without arranging a taxi through the immediate post-match closures. It also puts the pubs and food options of the town centre within reach. Leonardo Hotel Middlesbrough is especially handy for the station, while Premier Inn Middlesbrough Town Centre on Wilson Street is another practical base. Centre Square also has hotel options. Check the property’s parking terms separately if you are driving; central hotel parking is not automatically included. For a Saturday afternoon game with a comfortable homeward journey, an overnight stay is optional. It becomes more useful for a long-distance evening fixture or when your final rail connection is tight.
Premier Inn Middlesbrough Town Centre ↗Base yourself in central Middlesbrough, ideally between the station, Centre Square and the Baker Street/Bedford Street side of town. That keeps the railway, pre-match pubs and food, post-match drinks and the stadium walk within one compact area. Staying immediately beside the ground offers little evening advantage because there is no comparable hotel/nightlife cluster around the Riverside itself.
The stadium sits beyond the rail line in Middlehaven, bordered by the Tees, the A66 corridor and light-industrial/storage land. Pedestrian access from the centre is established and practical, using the station/Bridge Street-Windward Way route and rail-line underpasses, but the surroundings are more matchday destination than evening base.
For post-match food and drinks, the centre makes more sense. Baker Street and Bedford Street have the strongest independent bar/cafe identity, while Southfield Road and Captain Cook Square are also recognised night-time hubs. The station end of town adds conventional pubs and late venues, so supporters can drink centrally and walk back from the Riverside rather than relying on the stadium area.
Middlesbrough station is one of the best anchors for a football stay: local visitor and football sources put the Riverside at roughly 10-20 minutes on foot depending on route and pace. Station Suites is almost beside the station; Leonardo and Holiday Inn Express are also within a short town-centre walk.
