Holiday Inn Sunderland - City Centre by IHG
Keel Square / Sunderland city centre
The strongest all-round MatchdayHotels choice. It gives supporters the city-centre evening they are likely to want, very easy rail access and a now genuinely practical walk to the Stadium of Light via Keel Square and the Wear crossing. It is not the physically closest hotel to the turnstiles, but it avoids making supporters choose between the match and the rest of the night.
- On Keel Square, with bars and food immediately around the hotel and more city-centre nightlife within a short walk.
- IHG states Sunderland Central station is about three minutes away on foot.
Approximate practical walking relationship from Keel Square. Sunderland AFC routes rail arrivals through Keel Square toward the ground; other current event guidance describes a dedicated Keel Square-to-stadium route of about five minutes, while independent mapping puts Keel Square at roughly a nine-minute walk.
No hotel-owned on-site car park; guests use nearby city-centre parking.

Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland
Stadium Park / Monkwearmouth
The obvious choice when the supporter wants to be as close to the Stadium of Light as possible without compromising on hotel quality. Hilton describes it as adjacent to the stadium. For a late finish, an early departure or anyone who values a two-minute post-match return over being in the middle of the nightlife, this is the practical winner.
- Adjacent to the Stadium of Light and the most practical hotel for the turnstiles.
- Current reviews consistently praise the stadium location, staff, breakfast and generally clean, spacious rooms.
Hilton describes the hotel as adjacent to the Stadium of Light. It is effectively part of the wider Stadium Park complex.
Not as strong as Keel Square for stepping straight out into the main city-centre bars and restaurants.

Parking
Driving & road restrictions
For the dedicated Wessington Way Park & Ride, leave the A19 for the A1231 and follow the matchday signs to Sunderland Enterprise Park. For the stadium itself the sat-nav postcode is SR5 1SU, but that is not a usable public parking destination on matchdays. Aim for your chosen city-centre car park instead if you are driving directly into town.
Do not try to reach the stadium through the Sheepfolds residential streets. The council enforces event-day permits around the ground, and road access near the crowds can be restricted. Concert traffic orders found during research are not automatically active for league fixtures; check the specific match notice and live road conditions rather than treating an old closure as permanent.
- Stadium postcode
- SR5 1SU — stadium locator only; not general matchday parking
- Preferred park-and-ride approach
- A19 to A1231 Wessington Way; follow signs for Sunderland Enterprise Park
- Residential event restrictions
- Stadium of Light CPMS applies on SAFC home fixture and other advertised event dates; permit or voucher/scratch card needed
- Stadium car park access
- Valid existing parking pass required; no further 2026/27 passes currently sold
Parking & park-and-ride
Do not rely on free on-street parking near the Stadium of Light. More than 60 surrounding streets have tightly enforced matchday restrictions, and the council’s scheme requires a permit or visitor voucher. For the least troublesome arrival by car, use the Wessington Way Park & Ride, or plan a city-centre car park before setting off.
The club’s Park & Ride is signposted from the A1231 at Sunderland Enterprise Park. Its latest guidance says buses leave from permanent estate stops every five minutes, starting 90 minutes before kick-off, and return from Kier Hardie Way. Allow time for the shuttle and the walk to the North Stand; a return queue is possible.
There is legitimate free off-street parking on certain days. The council makes West Wear Street, Station Car Park on Holmeside and four other named sites free after 3pm on weekdays. Nexus also lists free parking at Stadium of Light Metro station on Sundays and after 5pm, but spaces are first-come, first-served. None establishes free residential parking.
For a simple paid fallback, Sunniside multi-storey costs £5 for the day, or £3 on Sundays and bank holidays, and opens round the clock. St Mary’s is another city-centre option, but closes at midnight. Avoid supermarket or stadium retail parking without explicit permission: normal short-stay allowances do not cover a football visit.
Allow at least four hours for parking, walking, the match and leaving. Arrive early for a Saturday fixture; after an evening match, allow for queues before reaching the A19. If the shuttle or cheaper sites are unavailable, use Sunniside rather than searching restricted housing streets.
- Parking verdict
- Do not rely on free nearby on-street parking; legal free off-street parking is available on some days, with Park & Ride or council car parks the practical alternatives
- Free option — city-centre weekday car parks
- West Wear Street SR1 1TW, Station/Holmeside SR1 3JE, Charles Street SR1 1XB, Gorse Road SR2 7DB, Nile Street SR1 1EY and Tatham Street SR1 2QB: free after 3pm Monday–Friday
- Free option — Metro station
- Stadium of Light Metro car park: free Sundays and after 5pm Monday–Saturday under Nexus tariffs, with no space guaranteed
- Free option — small Metro car park
- St Peter’s Metro station: free station car park, only 23 spaces; very limited capacity
- Legal restrictions — stadium neighbourhood
- Stadium of Light CPMS requires valid permit or visitor voucher/scratch card on SAFC home match/event dates shown on gateway signs
- Legal restrictions — named areas
- Council boundary map covers blocks north and east of the stadium towards Newcastle Road, including residential sections off Newcastle Road; do not assume any unmarked street is outside the zone
- Matchday availability — residential streets
- More than 60 surrounding streets have matchday controls and these are heavily enforced
- Matchday availability — Metro and small car parks
- No guaranteed space: St Peter’s station car park has 23 spaces; Stadium of Light Metro car park has limited capacity and live occupancy estimates are not guarantees
- Park & Ride — location
- Sunderland Enterprise Park, Wessington Way A1231, accessed from A19; stadium return stop Kier Hardie Way
- Park & Ride — start time
- Club Park & Ride page updated 28 September 2026 says every five minutes from 90 minutes before kick-off; an August 2026 accessibility FAQ says service from three hours; rely on later explicit bus times for planning
- Park & Ride — fare
- Venue Ticketmaster page describes matchday shuttle as free for both home and away supporters, but updated club page does not explicitly confirm fare
- Walk — city-centre car parks
- Sunderland AFC gives 10–15 minutes for station-to-stadium route via Keel Crossing; exact car-park-to-North-Stand durations have not been verified
- Walk — Metro car parks
- St Peter’s and Stadium of Light Metro stations both serve the stadium; exact walk to North Stand away turnstiles has not been reliably timed
- Arrive by — Park & Ride
- Allow time to park and board; current posted football buses begin 90 minutes before kick-off
- Arrive by — city car parks
- Early arrival advised on busy matchdays; actual space availability not guaranteed
- Paid fallback — Sunniside
- William Street SR1 1UL, open 24 hours except Christmas Day; £5 daily, £3 Sunday/bank holidays; 653 spaces and 1.9m height limit
- Paid fallback — St Mary’s
- St Mary’s Boulevard SR1 3AH, entrance Cumberland Street/Matlock Street; £1.60 per hour Mon–Sat daytimes and £3 flat rate Sunday/bank holiday; 6am–midnight and 1.85m height limit
- Paid fallback — Riverside
- Farringdon Row SR4 6BE; £1.50 per daytime hour up to £7 daily, Sunday/bank holiday £3, 7am–11pm, height limit 2.1m
- Paid fallback — The Bridges multi-storey
- SR1 3PZ; operator lists Mon–Sat 2–4 hours £4.50 and 4–6 hours £6; Sundays £3; 11.30pm closing, rooftop shorter hours
- Booking recommendation
- Book only a legitimate independent allocated space if essential; ordinary city-centre car parks and Metro spaces are first-come-first-served, while on-site matchday passes are sold out for 2026/27
- Supermarket permission/time limit
- Tesco Sunderland Extra on Newcastle Road lists store parking rules but does not publish a store-specific football visitor allowance or exact maximum stay; check entrance signs; no matchday permission verified
- Stadium retail parking
- Beacon/Green Car Park standard first-two-hours-free tariff does not apply to Sunderland AFC men’s first-team home matchdays
- Total dwell time
- Allow at least 4 hours for arrival, both walks, prematch entry, 90-minute match plus half-time/stoppage and return; 2–3 hour retail limits are not a suitable basis for football parking
- After the match
- Return Wessington Way shuttles from Kier Hardie Way; Sunniside exit queues have been reported, including one 90-minute anecdote from November 2025

Trains
Rail, Underground & tram
Use Sunderland railway station for a mainline arrival. It is in the city centre, and Sunderland AFC puts the walk to the Stadium of Light at around 10–15 minutes. Head towards Keel Square, cross the Wear using Keel Crossing and continue along Legends’ Way towards the ground.
If you are coming from Newcastle or elsewhere on the Tyne and Wear Metro, St Peter’s and Stadium of Light are the useful local stations. St Peter’s is nearer the stadium-side approach, but allow time to reach the North Stand away turnstiles. After the match, use St Peter’s towards Sunderland and South Hylton, or Stadium of Light towards Newcastle. Check your return train before travelling.
- Mainline arrival
- Sunderland station; club advises approximately 10–15 minutes to stadium via Keel Square, Keel Crossing and Legends’ Way
- Local Metro stations
- St Peter’s and Stadium of Light
- Southbound post-match Metro
- Board at St Peter’s towards Sunderland/South Hylton
- Northbound post-match Metro
- Board at Stadium of Light towards Newcastle
- Sunderland mainline station access
- National Rail categorises station as step-free category A; lifts serve all platforms
Station to ground & away entrance
For the away end, head to the North Stand and use turnstiles 69–74, unless your ticket or stewards direct you elsewhere. They normally open 90 minutes before kick-off. Do not stop at the main West Stand entrance just because your sat-nav or walking directions bring you there first.
From Sunderland station, walk through Keel Square to Keel Crossing, cross the river and follow Legends’ Way/Millennium Way to the stadium. Once there, follow the perimeter signs to the North Stand. If you need step-free assistance to the elevated away seating, ask stewards at the 76 Yards entrance in the north-east corner for the lift to level three.

Coaches
Away coaches
If you are travelling on an official away supporters’ coach, use the drop-off and collection point supplied by your club or coach organiser. Sunderland’s matchday guide says stadium coach parking must be booked in advance and gives the ticket office as the contact, rather than allowing drivers to arrive and look for an empty bay.
Stay with the organised group when you arrive and follow stewards towards the North Stand away turnstiles 69–74. The precise coach bay and post-match collection point can change by fixture, and the older club guide’s capacity figure is not proof of availability in 2026/27. Independent operators should arrange access with Sunderland AFC before setting off.
- Coach parking policy
- Arrange and book with host/visiting club in advance; walk-in coach parking is not established
- Historic coach capacity
- Older Sunderland matchday guide lists up to 24 stadium coach spaces; allocation for 2026/27 unconfirmed
- Coach enquiries
- 0371 911 1973 (number in older Sunderland club matchday guide)
- Away turnstiles
- North Stand, 69–74
Buses
Buses & local travel
The most convenient local public transport is the Metro, with stops at St Peter’s and Stadium of Light. For the return journey, follow the club’s separate boarding arrangements: St Peter’s for South Hylton and the city centre, Stadium of Light for Newcastle. Keep extra time for queues after a large crowd.
Local buses also serve the surrounding area, including routes 3, 4, 13, 35, 35A and 56 listed by Sunderland AFC. Park Lane Interchange is in the city centre, around a 15-minute walk from the stadium. If you are driving instead, the dedicated Wessington Way matchday shuttle uses Sunderland Enterprise Park stops and returns from Kier Hardie Way; do not confuse it with an ordinary scheduled bus.
- Nearby bus services
- 3, 4, 13, 35, 35A, 56 (club-listed; check current operator timetable for your fixture)
- City bus interchange
- Park Lane Interchange; club estimates around 15 minutes to the stadium
- Dedicated football shuttle
- Wessington Way/Sunderland Enterprise Park stops; buses every five minutes starting 90 minutes before kick-off according to the club’s 28 September 2026 update
- Matchday shuttle return pickup
- Kier Hardie Way north of stadium; runs until supporters have returned to cars
Accessibility
Accessible journeys
If you need wheelchair or ambulant access in the away end, arrange requirements through your own club before travelling. Visiting supporters can ask stewards at the 76 Yards entrance in the north-east corner for a lift to level three, where staff direct them to the appropriate seating and wheelchair platform. The away stand is elevated, so do not assume the standard turnstile route will suit everyone.
Sunderland AFC says it cannot sell any additional 2026/27 stadium parking passes, including accessible bays; older guides describing eight visiting spaces should not be taken as current availability. Sunderland rail station has lift access to all platforms, while the Metro offers assisted travel by arrangement. Check lift status and contact Nexus at least four hours ahead if you need a boarding ramp.
- Away accessible lift
- 76 Yards entrance, north-east corner; steward-assisted lift to level 3
- Stadium matchday accessible parking availability
- No additional 2026/27 stadium parking passes are being sold, including accessible bays; pre-existing allocations honoured
- Historic visiting disabled bay allocation
- Older visiting supporter guide cited eight spaces per fixture through visiting-club Disability Liaison Officer; 2026/27 availability superseded by 17 August 2026 club notice
- National Rail access
- Sunderland station: step-free category A to all platforms; accessible toilets currently reported out of service
- Metro station access
- St Peter’s uses lifts and ramps; Stadium of Light station uses ramp routes and has some steps on alternative paths; verify current operation
- Nexus assisted travel
- 0191 203 3666 or assistance@nexus.org.uk; contact at least four hours ahead for assistance/ramp
After the match
After the match
If you used the Wessington Way Park & Ride, head north of the stadium to the marked return shuttle stop on Kier Hardie Way. The club says buses continue until supporters have been taken back to their cars, although queues and the drive back to the A19 can add time. Stay with any organised away-coach group and use its confirmed meeting point.
For the Metro, supporters towards Sunderland or South Hylton should board at St Peter’s; those towards Newcastle should use Stadium of Light station. If you have parked in the city centre, walk back over Keel Crossing rather than seeking a taxi at the stadium gates. Sunniside is open 24 hours, but supporter reports describe a lengthy exit after one evening fixture; leave a generous buffer.
- Park-and-ride return
- Kier Hardie Way, north side of stadium; regular return buses until all football supporters returned
- Metro queue split
- St Peter’s for Sunderland/South Hylton; Stadium of Light for Newcastle
- Sunniside car park access
- 24-hour public operation except Christmas Day; exit delay can still occur on match nights
- Supporter exit report
- November 2025 Reddit supporter described approximately 90 minutes exiting Sunniside after Monday-night match; anecdotal, not representative guaranteed delay
- Stadium car park closure at full-time
- Older club matchday guide states car parks reopen around 30 minutes after final whistle; verify current pass-holder operations before relying on this
Where to stay
For most travelling supporters staying overnight, choose Sunderland city centre around Keel Square or High Street West. Sunderland station, pubs and restaurants are close by, and you can now reach the Stadium of Light on foot using Keel Crossing. Holiday Inn Sunderland City Centre is at Keel Square and the operator places it about three minutes from the railway station.
Choose the Hilton Garden Inn beside the stadium if a very short walk to the ground matters more than having the main city-centre restaurants outside your hotel. Roker or Seaburn makes sense if you also want the seafront, but adds a longer return journey after football. Hotel and stadium parking are separate questions: do not assume a room booking provides a football parking permit.
- Preferred overnight base
- Keel Square/High Street West city centre: walkable Sunderland station and stadium via Keel Crossing
- City hotel example
- Holiday Inn Sunderland City Centre, Keel Square SR1 3DS; operator states about three minutes on foot to Sunderland station
- Stadium-side hotel example
- Hilton Garden Inn Sunderland, Vaux Brewery Way SR5 1SN, directly beside Stadium of Light
- Seafront alternative
- Roker/Seaburn are coastal alternatives outside the main stadium and city-centre walking hub
- Hotel parking warning
- Hilton advertises Blue Car Park hotel parking, but general football matchday stadium access requires club-authorised arrangements; do not assume room rate includes matchday entitlement

Sunderland is an unusually straightforward away day once you ignore a few stale pub guides. Main-line arrivals should meet around Sunderland station, Fawcett Street and Keel Square: William Jameson is two minutes from the station, while the walk to the Stadium of Light takes roughly 10–15 minutes via Keel Crossing and Legends’ Way. Visiting supporters remain in the North Stand Upper for 2026/27, using turnstiles 69–74. Near the ground, The Victory, New Democratic Club and Albion have current evidence of welcoming away fans; the official Beacon of Light Fan Zone is the safest guaranteed mixed-supporter option. Away-colours policies are rarely published, so they remain unknown rather than assumed. Food is stronger than the old chippy-and-pie stereotype: Sheepfolds Stables has independent traders, PROPA! does North-East pies, and the city centre has Pablo’s, Spent Grain and Mexico 70. Stay around Keel Square for rail and nightlife or Roker/Seaburn for the coast. Brighton on 10 October is 15:00; vapes, coins and power banks are banned.

Food & quick bites
Where to grab a bite, have a proper meal or try the local matchday favourite.
Stadium of Light Away Concourse
A dependable fallback once you are inside. The away end has two dedicated food-and-drink courtyards, but current public sources do not give a trustworthy 2026/27 itemised menu.
Sheepfolds Stables
The best all-round food stop beside the ground. It is Sunderland-heavy in presentation, but current visiting-club guidance explicitly says all supporters can use it for food and drink.
PROPA!
The local-speciality choice beside the ground: proper handmade North-East pies from Si King’s team, eaten in the Sheepfolds courtyard before the short walk to the away end.
Pablo Eggs-Go-Bao Sunderland
A useful early-arrival food stop at Mackie’s Corner. It opens from 07:00 and gives train travellers a quick breakfast before the Keel Square walk to the stadium.
Spent Grain
The proper-brunch alternative for city-centre arrivals. It opens at 10:00 on Saturdays and is specifically recommended in Sunderland’s current visiting-fan guide for a Full English.
Mexico 70
A strong High Street West meal when you want more than football food.
Roker Fisheries
A straightforward Roker chippy for supporters starting by the coast. Cod, fish bites and local-style patties make it a better matchday choice than padding the list with chains.
